A Message from the Curator:
Mosaics have a long history, with evidence of their existence beginning in Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BCE. A traditional mosaic is a pattern or image of small regular or irregular pieces of colored stone, glass, or ceramic, held in place by plaster or mortar, and covering a surface. Today, mosaics are made by artists and craftspeople all around the world. Many materials other than the traditional are utilized by contemporary artists.
The exhibit, Mosaic And Mosaic-Like, features contemporary traditional Mosaics as well as work created in a Mosaic-Like style. All the artists work and reside in New Mexico.
All of the artists chosen for this exhibit have a contemporary edge to their work. Several of the pieces in the current exhibit detail narrative stories from family and related experiences. Some of the art has a strong mythological and mystical focus and tends to present a very sculptural approach. Several artists combine elements of original ceramic tiling with a mosaic technique. Much of the art uses subtle coloring and explores botanical and symbolic imagery. Quirky compositions, connections to earth and sky, found throughout the exhibit, add to the revelation of personal truths and mysteries. Several pieces utilize a mixed media approach, incorporating glitter and sparkle along with Pop Culture iconography.
A number of artists who work in media not associated with traditional mosaic art, utilize a wide range of materials, such as fabric, paint, metal, beads, paper and glass. They explore elements of art history, geometric abstraction, and a sense of social consciousness.
All pieces chosen for this exhibit are technically brilliant, reflect the ebb and flow of life, and reference the millenniums-long history of mosaic art.
