FUSEDSM // FROM THE CHAMBER Randy Sackett // Chair, Yellow & Capitol Cab Company As a chamber, we are excited about the optimism for the year to come. 2020 challenged us to find new ways to support our local community, and I am proud to say we rose to the challenge. We are working on many very exciting initiatives which you will soon learn about including affinity programs, exclusive offers, and of course our cornerstone programming.

If you haven’t joined us for a virtual coffee yet, join in at any time by registering on our website for free. It’s a great way to connect with others in our membership and spread the word about your latest initiatives. Another great program that came out of COVID-19 is the Fusing The Community Together series. Join in monthly as we flash mob a local business by making a purchase and enjoying together. This month we will learn how to mix margaritas with Coa Catina.

Or, if you’re looking to expand your skill set, we have had great success with our Feed Your Mind programming. Last month we touched on the Top 5 Marketing Trends for 2021 and how to Ignite Sales on Instagram with Emily Steele of Love Local. This month, join us for a presentation by Visionary to Make Your Website Work for You. In March, we are bringing back our monthly luncheons. Join us as we get an update from the city about the latest projects going on in the north side of Des Moines including Highland Park. And beyond that we are forming committees for our popular annual events; our annual dinner, the FORE! Golf tournament, and Taste of Something Spectacular.

All this to say, we are here, working for you. Let us know how we can support or connect you within the community. And as always, let’s keep #FusingTheCommunityTogether.

Join us for our next event simply by checking our chamber calendar and registering today- We look forward to continuing to ignite your growth in 2021!

Thank you to our Sponsors:

HOW CAN FUSEDSM HELP

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS // SPINDUSTRY CELEBRATING 25 YEARS // SPINDUSTRY When Spindustry opened its doors in 1996, a small group of employees were focused on database development using Microsoft Access to solve business problems. Jump ahead 25 years and a lot has changed but the goal remains the same – help other businesses grow through digital transformation.

It is rare to be around at the start of an industry, ride its ups and downs and to still be looking at an unlimited future. There have been many world events, some more technology related than others, to navigate including Y2K, 9-11, the recession of 2008 and, of course, COVID throughout 2020. In that same time, the Internet became widely used, social media came of age and mobile devices changed how people interact with each other and the world. Through all of that, Spindustry adapted, chose which technologies and opportunities to focus on and helped their clients do the same.

“When Spindustry started, the Internet was new to businesses and people and having a website was a big new opportunity and a big stress for organizations. They didn’t know if this was a fad or a worthwhile investment, let alone the future flagship of their marketing focus – and then social and mobile accelerated all of that again,” said Bird. Today, a proper website is “a branch office” allowing for e-commerce and other functions, moving its importance beyond a sole marketing function.

Spindustry has grown into a company of over 30 professionals with varying marketing and technology skillsets. Spindustry focuses on two main opportunities. One, building e-commerce and other sophisticated web-based solutions. Solving e-commerce challenges for manufacturers including data integration and navigating the complexities of dealer channel relationships are a particular focus. And, two, building solutions based on SharePoint and Office 365 to create intranets, manage data and connect businesses with their various locations and clients.

“I am proud to have led this organization along with my team for 25 years. In the next few years, we need to continue to bring up new leaders internally, help businesses navigate a new world in which people are comfortable doing business remotely and, of course, be prepared for the unexpected. If the last 25 years is any indication, it should be exciting,” said Bird.

You can learn more about Spindustry and it’s 25th anniversary at www.spindustry.com or contact Michael directly at mbird@spindustry.com.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY // FAREWAY GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY // FAREWAY We want to formally thank the IACC for partnering again with Fareway Stores, Inc. who is generously providing our members with another $2,000 in Fareway gift cards to support our FuseDSM community. These gift cards were provided to support small businesses and their employees who have been impacted during the COVID-19 crisis. We saw an incredibly positive response from small businesses across Iowa who were assisted during the initial program. “We are excited to continue our support of small businesses and their employees,” said Fareway President and CEO Reynolds W. Cramer. “As small businesses continue to face challenges, we are proud to again partner with IACC, which understands how best to serve its small business members during this unique economic time.” “Our members work diligently every day to strengthen communities throughout Iowa,” said IACC Executive Director Lane Till. “Through this generous additional donation from Fareway, our members will have the ability to help support the small businesses that create the heart of each of their communities.” In 2020, Fareway has provided nearly $500,000 in support to small businesses in partnership with IACC and local chamber of commerce members. HEALTHY HABITS // HYVEE 3 HEART-HEALTHY FOODS TO LOVE // HYVEE There’s been a popular, yet confusing, message being relayed over the past five years that there isn’t a causal relationship between eating saturated fats and heart disease. Scientist aren’t saying that saturated fat is good for you, but perhaps neutral for those that are healthy and active with no disease risk. If you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure or are at high risk for heart disease, you may want to take note of these two key points from the research: If you replace saturated fats in your diet (examples: butter, cheese, coconut oil, palm oil) with unsaturated fats (examples: nuts, seeds, fatty fish like tuna and salmon, olive oil, avocados), you may reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. (1) If you replace the saturated fats in your diet with low-fiber, fast-digesting carbohydrates (examples: fruit juice, pop, candy, pasta, rice, energy bars), you’ll likely increase your risk for a heart attack or stroke. (1) So don’t be deceived by this message being relayed that saturated fat is good for you; it’s still not “good” for you and when eaten in excess can increase your risk for heart disease leading to a heart attack or stroke. (1) Here are 3 foods you could eat to show your heart some love: Low-carb Vegetables – serving size is ½ cup cooked or 1 cup raw or 2 cups raw leafy greens. Examples: green beans, broccoli, spinach, kale, mushrooms, zucchini, yellow squash, Brussels sprouts. These veggies are loaded with vitamins, minerals and fiber and are low-calorie in comparison to other food groups. Walnuts – serving size is 1 ounce or approximately 7 walnuts. Walnuts are primarily a healthy fat source with some carbohydrate and a little bit of protein. They are high in vitamin B6, folate, thiamin – playing a role in cellular energy and a healthy nervous system. Salmon/Tuna – salmon and tuna are both fatty fish and are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, a polyunsaturated fat. Studies have found when participants replaced just 1% of their saturated fat intake with the same amount of calories coming from polyunsaturated fats, their risk of heart attack or stroke decreased by an average of 7%. The American Heart association considers 3.5 ounces of cooked fish or ¾ cup to be a single serving. For adults, two servings per week are recommended to help lower risk for heart disease. This warm salad contains all three of these foods and is rated 5 stars! It’s a simple one-pan meal that is rich with heart-healthy ingredients. Walnut-Crusted Salmon Winter Salad Serves 4 All you need: 12 oz. baby red or yellow potatoes, halved 12 oz. Hy-Vee Short Cuts sliced Brussels sprouts 1 tbsp plus 1/3 cup Gustare Vita olive oil, divided 1 large Honeycrisp or Gala apple, cored and cut into ½-inch-thick wedges 3 tbsp Gustare Vita balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp packed Hy-Vee brown sugar 1 tsp Hy-Vee Dijon mustard 1/8 tsp Hy-Vee salt 4 (5-oz.) pieces skinless fresh salmon fillets, ¾- to 1-inchthick 1/4 cup Hy-Vee chopped walnuts 6 oz. mixed salad greens 1/3 cup Hy-Vee Short Cuts chopped red onions

All you do: Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place potatoes and Brussels sprouts in a large bowl; toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Spread in a single layer on a 15x10-inch rimmed baking pan; add apple wedges. Roast for 10 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Whisk together vinegar, brown sugar, mustard and salt in a small bowl. Slowly whisk in remaining 1/3 cup olive oil. Divide vinaigrette into two portions and set aside. Push vegetables and apples to edge of pan, leaving them in a single layer. Pat salmon dry with paper towels; place in center of pan. Lightly brush salmon with one portion of vinaigrette; sprinkle with walnuts. Roast for 6 to 10 minutes or until salmon flakes with a fork (145 degrees) and vegetables and apples are tender. Drizzle with half of the remaining vinaigrette; sprinkle some of the greens around the salmon. Place remaining salad greens on four salad plates; sprinkle with red onions. Arrange salmon, vegetables and apples on top. Drizzle with remaining vinaigrette. BUSINESS CONSULTANT // ATW TRAINING SOLUTIONS THE SECRETS OF MEETING MAGIC REVEALED // Todd McDonald, ATW Training Solutions Do you hate meetings? Most people do. But in reality, we don’t hate meetings, we hate unproductive, time wasting meetings. Why is it that some meetings go like clockwork while others seem like the clock isn’t moving? The secret to great meetings is MAGIC, making them look and feel like they are magical. Let’s dive into the MAGIC acronym. M-To Meet or Not. Ironically, most meetings really don’t need to happen. We often have meetings for the sake of meeting, thinking everyone needs be included. The first step in magical meetings is to determine if you really need to meet. Ask yourself three questions: What is the overall objective? What needs to be accomplished? Is there a better approach? A-Agenda. Okay, we’ve all heard it…don’t start a meeting without an agenda. But it’s true. Developing an agenda doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It should include the goal of the meeting, major items of discussion, responsible parties and where applicable, time elements to keep things on track. Didn’t get the agenda done before the meeting? Go to the whiteboard/flip chart and put one together before starting. And don’t forget to share with participants in advance so they can come prepared. Great magicians don’t share their secrets but great meeting leaders do! G-Guidelines. Guidelines for how the meeting will be conducted will help participants follow the “rules” that will allow you to conduct and/or participate in the meeting with confidence. Clear guidelines and ground rules allow difficult matters to be dealt with in an organized way and keep controversy over process matters to a minimum. For on-going meetings, allow the team to set up ground rules. For one-time only meetings, have a generic set of ground rules that can be used. Remember, the key is to first set, but then be sure to follow your ground rules. I-Involve. Involvement is critical because the best solutions have involvement from a number of people. People tend to support solutions they help create and decisions and plans can derail if people who must implement them are not “brought up to speed” and involved. To take involvement to another level, consider asking individuals to take on meeting management roles such as time keeper, action planner or note taker. C-Clarity. Great magicians save their best magic to the final act. The final act of any meeting should be to make sure everyone is clear on next steps. Clarity in communication is integral to the success of any meeting. Without it, the only things you’ll be pulling out of your hat are misunderstanding, misinterpretation, and a lot of confusion. Ensure participants are “on the same page” during the session and leave with a common understanding. Magicians practice for years to become skilled in their trade. It may not take years for you to become more proficient in leading and participating in meetings but it does take time and practice. With time, you can become a meeting magician! Todd McDonald is the President of ATW Training Solutions. He can be reached at todd@atwtraining.com

HERE FOR THE COMMUNITY // FONG’S PIZZA FONG’S PIZZA: HERE FOR THE COMMUNITY // FONG’S PIZZA Fong’s Pizza is a combination of a tiki bar with a unique Asian-inspired pizza menu. Located in Downtown Des Moines, Fong’s Pizza has become quite well known. Although their pizza may be widely talked about, some big changes they have made in the last months haven’t been discussed as intensely. Fong’s Pizza has been working very hard to make their menu fit the needs of all their customers, while also giving back to the community. Since the pandemic started, Fong’s has been able to feed nearly 5,000 healthcare heroes, essential workers, and teachers. They also have been able to donate 1,500 handmade masks with their partnership through Masks for the Frontlines, and a generous donation from Storey Kenworthy. With their continued support from the community they hope to continue to make an impact whenever they can. Fong’s Pizza also has expanded their food options to fit the dietary needs of more customers, while also supporting other local businesses in the community. They have added more vegan and gluten-free options on the menu, which have been purchased from local businesses like, the Fresh Market Cafe. They also have partnered with Graziano Bros, Creme Cupcake, Brown Dogs Farm, and Pho 515 to add different items to their menu as monthly specials. For example, in January every large Bacon Popper scored you a free pack of bacon from Berkwood Farms. Along with their many changes Fong’s Pizza is also offering limited dine-in with respect to social distancing, direct delivery, and curbside carryout. Make sure to check them out today!

MARKETING EXPERT // CREATIVE DSM THE POWER OF BACKLINKS // Andi Fagen In January’s column, I discussed making a plan for this year. So hopefully you sat down and wrote out some goals and tactics. If SEO is one of your goals for this year, backlinks should be a tactic.

My February Digital Marketing Tip: Ask for Backlinks

If you need a refresher on backlinks, visit here. But basically, you can think of backlinks like a root system. The deeper they go, the stronger your website appears on Google. It’s important to ask your shouldering industries for a link from their site to yours, and this is yet another benefit of chamber membership. A directory listing comes with all chamber memberships to boost your SEO. So go out and get some link juice!

And hey, if you want to be featured in Creative DSM’s local business directory, apply for a spotlight here. Let’s keep #FusingTheCommunityTogether

THE

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

SAYING DOING and

It’s one thing for a bank to say it’s committed to making a difference. Bankers Trust actually does it by encouraging employees to give back in the areas they’re most passionate. For me, that’s impacting children’s lives through sports, and it’s why I cofounded the Des Moines Venom Youth Football Club four years ago. The skills and values children learn through football – like dedication, strength, camaraderie and good character – are essential in the classroom, and the workplace too. It’s rewarding to help our next generation of leaders succeed, and I’m proud to work for a company that empowers me to get involved in this way. – Wayne Middleton, VP and Manager — Project Management

NEW BEGINNINGS // ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT // PAOLO BARTESAGHI As a focal point for all things Italian, our present location has served us well for over 28 years, but now the time has come to move forward with our vision for the future that includes expanded City, State and Community events, such as an Interactive Museum, National Museum Tours, Research Library, Event Center, Culinary Classes, Language & Art Classes, and a Garden. A new facility has been found that will bring this vision to fruition. With unparalleled views of Downtown Des Moines and located minutes from the DSM International Airport, the historical Butler Mansion fits our agenda to a tee! We are excited to announce that we’ve signed on the dotted line and will be moving in 2021! The iconic Butler Mansion on Fleur Drive, was built in 1934, in a style the architecture magazines called Streamlined Moderne, a late version of art deco that possibly had more of the practical and less panache. It was forward-looking per the wishes of Earl Butler, an engineer who had lived in the city about three decades, and his architect George Kraetsch, also a Des Moines native. The Butler Mansion was built for durability, all reinforced concrete, steel trusses and large, steel windows that rolled outward. A ramp system unfolds from the basement to the thirdfloor sunroom. In 1989 architecture firm Wells Woodburn O’Neil designed the first of three additions that blend into the landscape as well as the original structure and today enclose a courtyard that was designed by Genus Landscape Architects and features recycled glass pavers, composite decking, a bocce ball court, a basalt water feature and a custom tally wall.
