MONTHLY LUNCHEONPERMANENT SUPPORTIVE HOUSING: A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR HOMELESSNESS - ANAWIM HOUSING CYNTHIA LATCHAM, MPA Homelessness is often intricately woven with other life challenges including disability, substance abuse, mental illness, poverty, history of foster care, domestic violence, physical disease, incarceration, unemployment and more. Improvements in health, safety, and employment are nearly impossible without stable housing. Permanent and Supportive housing provides the framework for people to address health and behavioral health challenges in a trauma informed and person centered manner. PSH is an ongoing act of compassion, embracing people who are struggling – who will likely always struggle – and ensuring they have the dignity and comfort of permanent housing. Cynthia Latcham is the Executive Director at Anawim Housing. A nonprofit which focuses on implementing Permanent Supportive Housing programs using evidence based principles of Housing First, Harm Reduction, and Trauma Informed Care. The Programs & Services department has existed for over 20 years, with Cynthia leading the team since 2017. During this time the program department has expanded to include permanent supportive housing for youth and Rapid Rehousing. As part of her work at Anawim Housing, Cynthia has leveraged her expertise in Permanent Supportive Housing to advance policy discussions with the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Health Initiative for People Who Inject Drugs, and served on the leadership team for the Community Visioning and Plan program focusing on strategies for addressing and ending homelessness in Polk County. Born in Barrington, Illinois, Cynthia is a passionate believer in smart, creative bureaucracy that empowers individuals to achieve goals. She is especially proud of the team of committed and talented professionals she works with on a daily basis. CITY OF DES MOINES TRASH BASH Earth Month 2022, is a collaboration between the cities & citizens of Des Moines, Clive, West Des Moines, Norwalk, Polk County Conservation, Trees Forever, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and Des Moines Water Works and is sponsored by Friends of Des Moines Parks. In 2020, we canceled Earth Day Trash Bash, Iowa's largest volunteer Earth Day event, as our communities moved to slow the spread of COVID-19. In 2021, we were back but reimagined. And in 2022, we are rolling with it again. Earth Day in the U.S. began in 1970 as 20 million Americans, from all walks of life, mobilized in an effort to change our environment. Today, Earth Day is celebrated by more than a billion people per year in 192 countries. This year, Earth Day is Every Day! Thanks to volunteer safety protocols we'll have opportunities spread out thru the Metro for small groups to volunteer while being physically-distanced over multiple dates in April-Earth Month. We will provide you opportunities to give back to make the Metro a great place to live, work and play again! Registration This is a great way to build team culture and see each other outside. So, whether you are working remotely or in an office, homeschooling kiddos, or all of the above...we're here for you. We know your offices are a bit different too, so we won't expect there to be Captains or team registration matching you to your normal locations. We want to make this as easy as possible for you to grab your "pod", "unit", "team" or sign-up alone. This is a first come- first served come as you are gig. And if you aren’t ready to be around others, feel free to head out into your neighborhood and pick up trash (self-led). You can still sign-up and then just share with us how much you did and where you cleaned to help our communities reach their goals.

STICK BY ME: CRISIS STICKERS TO SAVE LIVES PLEASE PASS THE LOVE We continue to see an increase in suicides across the state and most recently many more including kids as young as 5th grade. In response we have launched a "Stick by Me" campaign to get crisis stickers in all schools and businesses across the state. Our staff and board feel a heavy sense of urgency to rally our community. We are counting on our business community to really help turn this around. March & April tend to have the highest suicide rates, so we HAVE to know that right now a whole bunch of young people are contemplating their own existence. In 2018, the Iowa Youth Survey indicated 21% of Iowa youth had contemplated suicide in the last year. That means in a district with 1000 kids over 200 may be contemplating.

Here's how your business can help this crisis: 1. Post crisis lines on your website and include on your email 2. Share stress screeners with your staff and employee mental health resources 3. Help us get crisis hotline stickers into EVERY school and business with your sponsorship. 4. Normalize mental health by talking about it. 5. Encourage mental health and self-care initiatives in your place of business. Happy and healthy employees are more productive. 6. Mental health prevention is cost effective by getting people what they need by improving health, decreasing absences, improving morale, increasing employee retention, decreasing insurance claims.

We are specifically targeting businesses, corporations, organizations, etc. and giving them tangible workplace suggestions to implement immediately to help increase mental health awareness. Adults in businesses are parents, coaches, aunts/uncles, faith leaders, etc to children in our community, so by helping to educate and support adults we are helping youth. We need YOUR help to plaster crisis stickers in every school, business, and bathroom stall across the state and we are asking businesses and partners to help us do it.

7. Have “Green Out Days!” Green is the color for mental health awareness. Use green screen savers, wear green, hand out PPTL green “You are not alone” bracelets. 8. Create a workplace fundraiser to help us get more mental health support & resources to schools, youth, and families.

PARKS AREA FOUNDATION CONTINUED REVITALIZATION AND EDUCATING OUR RESIDENTS AND OTHER CITIZENS OF DES MOINES From the beginning, our focus has been on community improvement projects with a strong emphasis on education about our rich history. A historian has called the Highland, Union and Oak Park areas one of the best examples of a “streetcar suburb” in the Midwest. Our goals have expanded beyond revitalization and educating our residents and others on the history of our neighborhoods. Our mission is to create a safe, exciting outdoor recreational hub in a historic setting that is a regional venue for the arts and various events to enhance the quality of life. There are ongoing benefits to living and working in the Parks area. One of the ways we make this happen is by bringing people together at the new Riviera Prairie Meadows Stage at Riverview Park. In 2014, the Parks Area Foundation formed a public/private partnership with the City of Des Moines to bring back this historic community location. A capital campaign was started and by 2018, the funds were secured to re-develop Riverview Park with the new Prairie Meadows Riviera stage on the site of the old ballroom. Having Variety the Children’s Charity build an all-inclusive Star Playground reminiscent of the rides at the old amusement park was definitely a bonus to Riverview Park. Des Moines Parks and Recreation amenities are in place to attract people to this new facility. The Neal Smith trail, located adjacent to Riverview Park, accommodates approximately 500,000 people who pass this park annually and is a great addition. Join us every Friday in June and July for a family friendly, free concert series called Rendezvous on Riverview. The stage is open for rental during the year. Contact us: parks@dmgov.org

5 FOOLISH LEADERSHIP MISTAKES TO AVOID DANIELLE RUSCH SENIOR HR CONSULTANT - DYNAMIC TALENT CONSULTANTS Mistakes happen. Everyone makes mistakes. They aren’t intentional. We’re taught about mistakes as children because that is how we learn. They are a natural part of both personal and professional life. Thinking about April Fool’s Day made me reflect on common mistakes that I often see from those in leadership positions. There are two factors that I believe make these mistakes “foolish,” Are

No Time to Engage Leaders and managers don’t set aside time to engage authentically with their employees, whether purposely or inadvertently. Whether this is a short, genuine “how are you doing” conversation or providing feedback in a one-on-one, not making time for engagement is a big, avoidable mistake.

they avoidable? Did you take ownership and accountability for the mistake? They are foolish because most leaders understand these mistakes contextually but do not take the necessary actions to avoid or prevent them. Additionally, if there is no accountability, mistakes will continue to be made. So what are some of the foolish mistakes I see? Let’s take a quick look.

Micromanagement There are usually two causes of micromanagement. A lack of trust or a lack of skills in the individual performing the work. This causes managers to step in and do the work, which breaks down confidence

How to avoid: Schedule time to connect with your employees in a one-on-one meeting to provide feedback, check-in on work progress, answer any questions, and build trust and confidence.

Work-Life Separation While the pandemic has brought this more to light, another foolish mistake is assuming there is no correlation between work and life regarding employee productivity and needs. There is. Employees have emotions. These can’t always be separated. While you are not a therapist, there should be employee support for working through challenges that affect

Not Asking for Feedback Feedback looks different at the top in leadership positions, but that doesn’t mean it is any less important. One very common mistake leaders make is not consistently asking for feedback. Feedback isn’t always easy to hear, but if you ask for it and react instantly, people will avoid giving it. How to avoid: Seek out feedback and don’t react to it. Take it in and sit with it to evaluate if it’s a growth opportunity or not for you. BARATTA'S DES MOINES ITALIAN RESTARAUNT When you come to Baratta’s, you really are home. In fact, the Baratta family once lived in the rooms where diners now gather for meals and special occasions. The family began their journey in the Des Moines food scene when they opened a small grocery store in the front of their home near downtown Des Moines. Specializing in Italian foods and ingredients, the Baratta name became synonymous with traditional Italian recipes. In 1993, the family sold the store and home to three local Lincoln High School alums, Joe Gatto and Curt and Lisa Kruger. Today, Joe and Lisa are continuing to maintain the charm of the original shop by serving classic Italian recipes daily, including lasagna al forno, steak deburgo, and cannolis. Through the years, a wide variety of flavors have been added, to include American cuisine as well. Baratta’s has been a Des Moines staple for over 50 years and is always welcoming new guests to the table. With multiple locations now open, catering available, and take-out options, there are several ways to enjoy our menu. From celebrating anniversaries and birthdays to fueling kids up before football games and dances, Baratta’s is a tradition that keeps getting better.

INTRODUCING THE FOUNDERS GARDEN RYAN DRAKE, ECOLOGICAL HORTICULTURIST GREATER DES MOINES BOTANICAL GARDEN The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden’s Founders Garden, a dry meadow garden slated for opening this Memorial Day, showcases native Iowa plants that will thrive in a changing climate. A dry meadow garden can be open to interpretation as long as it contains drought-tolerant plantings. These plantings are xeriscapes, meaning they require very little to no supplemental water. The aim is to create climate resilient gardens that also provide lasting beauty. A new wave is emerging in horticulture as people— especially now—hunger for the feeling of expansive meadows that are ecological and sustainable, reengage our senses, and connect us to the places we call home. The incredible landscapes of Iowa are the inspiration for the Founders Garden. The Botanical Garden’s dry meadow is based on sand prairies and the unique Loess Hills of western Iowa. The Loess Hills are a rare, relatively young, geologic feature formed over 100,000 years ago as wind swept up fine, sandy loess from the Missouri River Valley continuing after the Ice Age. These deposits landed east of the river valley and are 200 feet deep in some places. The only other place in the world with loess deposits this deep is Shaanxi Province, China.

townhomes? Condominiums and townhouses are in urban areas, rural areas and suburbs and can be one story or multiple stories. The biggest difference between the two is ownership and fees, what you own and how much you pay for it. A condominium is similar to an apartment in that it is an individual unit in a building or community of buildings with elevator or stairway access to the unit. Unlike an apartment, a condominium is resident owned and shares joint ownership with the other tenants of the building. This joint ownership includes not just the building structure itself but the common areas such as a gym, pool and grounds. Utilities could be included in the purchase but it is not a guarantee. Parking, with or without covered garage space, is usually underground or on ground level.

What makes a Town Home a Town Home? A townhouse is usually a ground level home owned by the resident and may or may not have a garage attached. Typically, only one or

BUSINESS OWNER TIPS

SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION IOWA 10 STEPS TO START YOUR BUSINESS Starting a business involves planning, making key financial decisions, and completing a series of legal activities. Scroll down to learn about each step. 1. Conduct market research Market research will tell you if there’s an opportunity to turn your idea into a successful business. It’s a way to gather information about potential customers and businesses already operating in your area. Use that information to find a competitive advantage for your business. 2. Write your business plan Your business plan is the foundation of your business. It’s a roadmap for how to structure, run, and grow your new business. You’ll use it to convince people that working with you — or investing in your company — is a smart choice. 3.Fund your business Your business plan will help you figure out how much money you’ll need to start your business. If you don’t have that amount on hand, you’ll need to either raise or borrow the capital. Fortunately, there are more ways than ever to find the capital you need.

4. Pick your business location Your business location is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Whether you’re setting up a brick-and-mortar business or launching an online store, the choices you make could affect your taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. 5. Choose a business structure - The legal structure you choose for your business will impact your business registration requirements, how much you pay in taxes, and your personal liability. 6. Choose your business name It’s not easy to pick the perfect name. You’ll want one that reflects your brand and captures your spirit. You’ll also want to make sure your business name isn’t already being used by someone else. 7.Register your business Once you’ve picked the perfect business name, it’s time to make it legal and protect your brand. If you’re doing business under a name different than your own, you’ll need to register with the federal government, and maybe your state government, too. 8. Get federal and state tax IDs You’ll use your employer identification number (EIN) for important steps to start and grow your business, like opening a bank account and paying taxes. It’s like a social security number for your business. Some — but not all — states require you to get a tax ID as well. 9. Apply for licenses and permits- Keep your business running smoothly by staying legally compliant 10. Open a business bank account A small business checking account can help you handle legal, tax, and day-to-day issues. The good news is it’s easy to set one up if you have the right registrations and paperwork ready.

MAKE MORE, WASTE LESS BY: ANNE CUNDIFF, RD, LD, FAND CORPORATE HY-VEE DIETITIAN

Do you ever look in your pantry or refrigerator and think: “Where did that come from?” Then you look at the product and notice there is no way you can use that in a meal at your house - there is mold or it’s past its best-use-by date. Proper meal planning, along with utilizing what’s in your house before it goes bad, is an important way to decrease food waste. Did you know that, on average, each American is throwing away 20 pounds of food waste per month? An important way to decrease this would be by creating a meal plan for you and your family to follow. You can start with these three easy steps. 1. Long Live Leftovers. Leftovers are a great way to use foods in your fridge that otherwise would go to waste. Try to plan one meal per week that involves leftovers. Here’s an example: Take leftover chicken

breast from dinner earlier this week, combine it with pasta from the fridge and sautéed zucchini, spinach and mushrooms that were on their last leg. This will be a quick and easy meal your whole family will enjoy. Or use leftover hotdog or hamburger buns plus vegetables that are going back in your fridge for an egg bake the next morning. 2. Freeze Forgotten Foods. Sometimes foods we fully intend to use can get pushed back in our fridge, and when we find them again, they’re one day from going in the trash. Instead of throwing them away, put them in the freezer! This can include things like hotdog or hamburger buns, bananas, berries, spinach and other greens. One great way to use these foods again is in a protein smoothie; or add frozen vegetables to your meatloaf or lasagnas. If you have leftovers that are already premade but sick of eating them, label and freeze them and enjoy for a work lunch later on in the month. 3. Save Scraps. Every piece of our food is something we can make use of. This can include potato peels, carrot and celery ends and even chicken bones. Potato peels can be turned into homemade potato chips that are fun for kids to make and eat. Combining vegetable scraps or chicken bones with water and herbs can create a fantastic vegetable broth that you can use to create soup for your family. Scraps can also be turned into compost for your garden! Decreasing food waste can be a fun way for you and your family to get creative with what meals you make for dinner. Take inventory of your fridge every night to make sure you’re having the least amount of food waste you can. Try to put fruits and vegetables on a main eye-level shelf to remind yourself to utilize those in meals. You’re less likely to let them go to waste if you see them daily. Gather up some leftovers to create this recipe:

GREATER DES MOINES PARTNERSHIP

WORKFORCE TRENDS & OCCUPANCY STUDY CAPTURES INSIGHTS TO HELP ADVANCE GREATER DES MOINES & DOWNTOWN DSM GREATER DES MOINES, IA (March 8, 2022) – The Greater Des Moines Partnership, Bâton Global and Reworc have released the results of the DSM Workforce Trends and Occupancy study as it relates to the regional workforce, including Downtown Des Moines (DSM). The study included nearly 5,200 participants from 18 organizations to identify trends specific to the Greater Des Moines (DSM) region and Downtown DSM. This is the first-of-its-kind community-level study of knowledge workers in the world. Insights will be used to drive action steps in the Downtown DSM: Future Forward vision plan and action plan to be finalized in coming months. The study helped organizers uncover 10 key insights so far, five regarding the future of work and five regarding the future of Downtown DSM.

Insights related to the future of work in Greater Des Moines include: Deep Work: Knowledge workers are placing highest value upon activities that are more complex, collaborative and judgementbased. Things like analyzing, programming, coaching and designing are what lead to success, according to participants. Just Do It: The study found a key opportunity for employers is to allow for more time to do deep work and less time in meetings. The Total Package: Salary, work-life balance and employee benefits constitute the base of the employee value proposition. These were the top three most important organizational attributes for participants, with the strongest interest and expectations regarding salary. A Needed Shift: Today’s organizational culture in DSM puts emphasis on performance, stability and control. However, participants feel more teamwork and innovation will be necessary for organizations to achieve their highest aspirations in the future. The Future of Hybrid: Pre-pandemic, time spent working from the office vs. at home was 85%/15%. Now it is 40% in office vs. 60% at home, and study participants signaled a desire for this 40%/60% split to continue in the future. Executives who took the survey preferred a split of 60% in office and 40% at home. The data shows that employers can create meaningful in-person experiences at the office that are connected to socialization and make onsite the new offsite.

Insights related to the future of Downtown DSM include: Memorable Experiences: Cultural events, socializing and outdoor recreation drive high Downtown DSM utilization, satisfaction and were a priority for respondents. Generational Approach: Age is a lead driver in the variation of preferences and utilization of Downtown. For example, people in their 20s use Downtown DSM more than anyone else and parking is more important to people 50 years and older Build It and They Will Come: A total of 86% of study participants said they would utilize Downtown more with continued improvements. Step by Step: A total of 50% of study participants desire greater walkability vs. drivability, with concentrated parking, and another 32% feel today’s ratio between walking and driving is ideal. Building for the Future: Work is changing, and how people are using Downtown DSM is changing. These trends are evolving in parallel. Downtown DSM and its office environments must satisfy people’s need for connection rather than just being a space for their work duties. “We have a history of coming together as one region to advance our region, and this is an exciting time for our community and for Downtown DSM as we get to create the future together,” said Tiffany Tauscheck, Chief Operations Officer at the Greater Des Moines Partnership and President of Downtown DSM, Inc. “We have a rare opportunity to reimagine and redesign Downtown DSM and make it a model for other communities to emulate.” Review more results from the Workforce Trends and Occupancy Study on The Partnership’s website. THE GREAT OUTDOORS FIND YOUR ADVENTURE THROUGH THE GREAT OUTDOOR IN GREATER DES MOINES

SPRING (BIKES, BREWS, & BOARDS) HIGH TRESTLE TRAIL Named by the BBC as one of the world’s “Eight Amazing Footbridges,” the highlight is the half-mile, 13-story tall bridge over the Des Moines River valley. Did we say day trip? Make time for an evening excursion as well, when the 41 steel frames overtop the bridge illuminate the night sky with a cool blue glow, no filter required.

SAYLORVILLE LAKE For an all-day adventure, start at Saylorville Lake in Polk City, which is the most popular lake in Central Iowa for good reason. With 26,000 acres of floating fun, a beach, and not one, but two bar and grills, this is the perfect place to drop anchor for a sun-soaked day of pontoons, sunscreen, cannonballs, and classic rock. You’ll leave

NEAL SMITH TRAIL With 26 miles of changing landscapes (the wildflower prairie meadows are a sight to behold) and connections to other popular trails, there is something for everyone. You’ll also pass through Saylorville Lake, where you can pause for a drink or a dip and Big Creek State Park, which boasts several picnic and recreational areas.

I'M ON A BOAT! GRAY'S LAKE There is also Gray’s Lake downtown, where you can rent a kayak or paddleboat and pair it with views of skyline, a stroll around the 2-mile lakefront loop (over illuminated bridges), and a picnic by the playground for the kids. For more ideas on how to explore the water trails, check out this guide.

with a full heart and empty cooler.

TAKE A HIKE JESTER PARK You’ll be at home on the range at Jester Park, one of Iowa’s favorite outdoor playgrounds, with hiking, an equestrian center, golf course, nature center, natural playscape, and elk and bison herds. There are over 8 miles of trails to explore, including the scenic 5-mile Lakeshore Trail.

LEDGES STATE PARK One of the most popular state parks in the state is Ledges State Park. With sandstone cliffs and dense forest paths, you can soak in nature’s beauty and feel rejuvenated walking near the many creek crossings along Canyon Drive. In the fall, as the leaves turn color, check out the spectacular views of Pea’s Creek canyon. A great photo backdrop is the arch stone bridge over Pease Creek, constructed in the 1930s.
