We are a New Zealand family-owned company with a passion for quality, refined design and artisan craft. In a market that is constantly changing, we decided to redefine our existing Mulberi brand with a clearer focus, design direction and product offerings. It gives us much pleasure to finally share Baya with you in this first edition catalogue.
The Baya name takes inspiration from a small yellow bird known for its incredible nest weaving skills. The name expresses our appreciation for the artisan and handcrafted. It also connects with homemaking and impeccable design.
Baya is the flagship brand of Furtex - a company with a rich history dating back to 1939. Now in its fourth generation, the family legacy continues, committed to providing discerning clients with outstanding interior furnishings and customer service to match. The care we invest in the creation of these products is matched by the care and commitment we show to you, our retailers, and customers.

Loved for the casual style it creates, linen remains a staple product throughout the seasons. Our linen yarns are carefully hand-dyed to specific colours stipulated by our Design Team, then woven into fabric by artisan craftspeople. When weaving the fabric there are a range of finishes that can be achieved, from a thick and coarse-weave to fine and smooth. Our range encompasses a variety of these textures from the loose slub of the Flaxmill to the fine, soft finish of our Indira. Enzyme washing is an ecologically-friendly laundering process that uses enzymes to soften and finish fabric, producing a slightly worn-in look and feel. Due to the nature of this technique, as well as the hand dyeing processes, there may be slight variations in the colour and texture from the images within this catalogue.

We’ll discuss your requirements and help you through the process of creating your perfect piece. Where needed, we can provide you with a sample to confirm the colour, texture and quality.
We aim to provide you with a quote within three working days. This will include information on freight options and lead times. Once you confirm the shipping option (air or sea), we provide a final quote and request payment of a 30% deposit.
Depending on the size of your custom rug, manufacturing times may vary. One of our team will be available throughout the process to update you on the progress of your order. Please keep in mind our rugs are handmade and depending on the shipping option, may take some months to finalise.
Before being dispatched to you, your rug will go through a quality control process here in New Zealand, to ensure it meets our high standards of manufacture.
For large rooms with furniture floating in the centre, a floor rug should be big enough so that the furniture fits completely on top without feeling cramped.
Try a 300x400cm size floor rug
Use an oversized rug to frame and bring interest to a room. The rug should be large enough in size, so furniture fits comfortably on top without feeling cramped.
Try a 350x350cm or a bespoke size floor rug
Define a small space such as a reading nook or quiet corner with a smaller size floor rug.
Try a 160x230cm size floor rug
When furniture is against a wall, aim to have the front legs of all furniture on the floor rug.
Try a 250x350cm size floor rug
Smaller floor rugs can be used just under the coffee table to define specific seating areas.

For a supremely comfortable and luxurious fill, we recommend our premium, 100% natural duck feather inners. These are made from 100% cotton down-proof outer and feature a piped edge for extra durability and a tailored shape. Valued for the stylish look they create, their light and cushiony style allows them to be easily plumped and reshaped to sit comfortably in your interior space. For a fuller look, our polyester inners are a durable and price conscious option.

It is important for your customers to understand that they are purchasing handmade products. Handmade floor rugs are not suited for every environment, and it is therefore essential to explore if the rug is suitable for your or your client’s situation.
To ensure product longevity, we recommend avoiding placing items in direct sunlight. Australasian sunlight is particularly strong and can degrade fibres and cause discolouration. Dyed and printed products made from natural fibres are susceptible to fading in high UV areas, so avoid placing these products in areas exposed to sunlight.
Avoid placing dyed products onto light coloured furniture or floors as colour migration can occur.
Generally, cushions and throws are best cared for by handwashing or gently cold machine-washing separately. Line-dry items in shade and warm-iron on the reverse. Do not soak, bleach, tumble dry or dry clean any product without carefully checking the care instructions. Refer to the product’s internal label and follow recommended cleaning for individual items.
Take extra care when cleaning cowhides or furs, by brushing lightly to restore the pile. Do not wash as this causes the natural leather to dry out and become brittle. Spot clean any spills immediately with a clean white cloth, using a small amount of lukewarm water. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or near any other heat sources, as natural hide products dry out and become brittle when exposed to excess sunlight or heat. See individual care instructions for varying hide types.
Shake floor rugs regularly to restore the pile and remove dust and dirt. As a rule, floor rugs cannot be washed, so spot cleaning with a damp cloth is recommended. Avoid using a turbo or brush head when vacuuming as this will create matting on shaggy rugs, fluffing on tufted and flatweaves, and damage to handmade floor rugs. Gentle vacuuming or shaking is recommended. Use anti-slip rug underlay to prolong floor rug life. Rug underlay also
supports the structure of the rug and can prevent rugs becoming misshapen. Use rug protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid indentations and flattening of the weave. Rotate your floor rug every half year to ensure even wear from foot traffic and sunlight. Use rug protection - Micro Seal is a proven seal that offers permanent protection against stains, mould, wear, and sun fade. It is non-toxic and non-allergic.
These products are suitable for both in and outdoor use and have higher resistance to UV light and water. However, to ensure product longevity, it is recommended that products are not left permanently exposed to the elements as colours may fade over time. We suggest bringing your cushions and floor rugs indoors when not in use. Floor rugs can be cleaned by shaking out. For a deeper clean, gently wash with a garden hose or with a damp cloth and warm soapy water.
Although we strive for consistency in our products, the complex and nuanced nature of handmade processes may reveal minor variations in colour, pattern, texture, and size. These are to be expected and are common marks of craftsmanship. The following are industry accepted manufacturing variations.
Minor variations may be evident, which may include weave thickness, pattern, or differences in the yarn weight. Many of our floor rugs are handmade on vertical looms with two craftspeople working together on a piece. While the utmost care is taken, this can result in tension variation across the weaving. We recommend using anti-slip rug underlay to support the structure and prolong the life of your floor rug.
Due to changes in pile and weave direction, shading or shift lines may occur. This is a natural characteristic of carpets and floor rugs and presents as particular areas appearing lighter or darker from certain angles (where the pile reflects the light differently). This is a feature characteristic of cut and loop pile floor rugs, especially solid colours.
Loose fibres occur with most new rugs, particularly with products made from natural fibres. Shedding is a normal characteristic and is caused by some outside fibres or yarn bundles becoming detached during early wear stages. Careful, gentle vacuuming (with low-level suction along the grain of the pile) will hasten the removal of any loose fibres.
Due to the handwoven nature of our floor rugs, you may notice that loops or ends of yarns pop up occasionally. This is a common occurrence with woven designs and happens when a weaver has come to the end of a length of yarn and has begun a new length. They can be easily mended by carefully trimming with a pair of scissors or pushing them back through to the underside. Pop-ups are not considered a fault – they are simply part of the general maintenance of a woven rug. They can be quickly and easily mended after vacuuming and should ease after some time.
As a handmade piece, the size can vary +/- 3% from the size specified.
It is normal for floor rugs to show minor colour variation from samples and catalogue images, or minor variations between production runs and dye batches. Many of our rugs are also made from natural, undyed yarns which are blended to create the desired colour.
Colour appearance can vary depending on the type of light under which a sample is viewed and the light sources where the floor rug is located. Viewing of samples in the home and under as many different light sources as possible prior to decision making is recommended. Every effort is made to ensure there is minimal colour variation and to ensure this is within recognised textile industry standards, however some variation can be expected.
