It works closely with children, women and communities as well as governments, other UN agencies, faith-based groups, non-government organisations and the private sector on behalf of all children without regard to race, creed or religion. UNICEF has the global authority to influence and produce change in local policy and attitudes, for the good of children and their communities. Through contact with UNICEF the lives of millions of children have been saved or changed for the better. But the challenge is ongoing millions of children still need our help. One of UNICEF project is selling Christmas cards in order to generate funds. These cards are more than a message or a picture. They support a cause, spreading awareness and raising funds. The proceeds from sales are used by UNICEF for children's rights, survival, development and protection. It started in 1949 when the first UNICEF greeting card was made. The first charity Christmas card was sent in 1949, it was designed by 7 year old Jitka Samkova of Rudolfo, Czechoslovakia. Her village received UNICEF emergency assistance in the form of food and medicine following World War II. In gratitude to the organization, Jitka painted a picture of the sun shining on a group of children dancing around a maypole. She used a sheet of glass to work on as there was no paper available. The scene, she explained means joy going round and round. Her teacher entered the painting for a UNICEF competition and winning the first prize and was made into UNICEF's first Christmas card. Over the years, UNICEF have come up with an exceptional range of cards to choose from. There are Corporate Christmas cards and there are for family and friends. Thousand of UNICEF cards are sold every year and the money raised from the cards go central pool in New York and Geneva and is dispersed later to our different programmes around the world.
