Get started on your new kitchen by having plans drawn up. A professional designer will know how to maximise space and cater to your living needs.

You can draw plans yourself if you have an understanding of cabinetry and use of space.

Custom designs come at a price but give you the flexibility to use every inch of space. Plus, you’ll have a choice of materials to create the style you want. Don’t want to go custom?

Flat pack kitchen units come as a set size and are generally available off-the-shelf from building stores.

How much storage do you need? How much cabinetry can you install without making your new kitchen feel smaller than the original? What needs to be stored there? Take advantage of the space you have by working as much detail as possible into your kitchen plan from the beginning of the project.

Banana, Coconut & Caramel Pavlova Serves 12

Ingredients for the Pavlova

6 egg whites, at room temperature 2 cups caster sugar • 2 tsp white vinegar • 2 tbsp cornflour • 2 tsp vanilla essence •

Ingredients for the Topping

150g palm sugar 150ml water • 300ml cream • 3 bananas • Fresh coconut shavings •

Step 1 Preheat your oven to 150ºC and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Beat the egg whites on high with an electric beater until stiff peaks form. Add sugar gradually in a slow stream whilst beating on high. Once all sugar has been added, continue to beat for 10 minutes.

Step 2 Mix together the vinegar, cornflour and vanilla essence, decrease the mixer setting to medium-low and add the cornflour mix. Mix until combined.

04 Select Your Appliances It’s important to choose your appliances before finalising your kitchen to ensure they fit. You’ll need to check that there is enough ventilation around appliances such as wall ovens, fridges and wine cabinets. Refer to the manufacturer’s installation guides in case there’s anything a little different about the appliance you’ve picked.

05 Choose Your Colours, Finishes and Fixtures If this is your dream kitchen in your dream house, go all out. If it’s a property you’ll be selling or renting out in a year or two, keep those bespoke extras to a minimum as you won’t be the one using them when you sell up.

Renovating your kitchen is an exciting change to make to your home, so it’s worth spending some time and thought on your design and product choices.

Step 3 Draw a circle 25cm in diameter on the baking paper and spoon the mixture onto this circle in a cylindrical shape. Smooth the sides and the top and place onto the middle shelf of your oven. Turn the oven down to 125ºC and bake for 1 hour, then turn the oven off and leave the pavlova in the oven to cool completely.

Step 4 Combine the palm sugar and water in a sauce pan and stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Continue to simmer until the syrup thickens, then remove from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Whip the cream into soft peaks and spread it over the top of the pavlova. Top with sliced banana and shaved coconut, then drizzle with the palm sugar syrup.

Flame Failure Flame Failure is a device designed to stop flammable gas going to the burner of a gas appliance if the flame is accidentally extinguished, preventing a dangerous build-up of gas.

Step 1 Preheat oven to 180˚C. Score the pork rind finely with a sharp knife. Place garlic cloves in a large baking dish and top with pork. Spread pork with mustard, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 1 hour or until the juices run clear when pierced by a skewer. Remove and rest uncovered in a warm place.

Step 2 While the pork is roasting, make the salsa verde by combining garlic, capers, pistachio nuts, anchovies, herbs and red wine vinegar in a food processor or blender until roughly chopped. With the motor running, add olive oil and mix until just combined.

Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Step 3 To serve, slice pork thickly and arrange on a serving platter. Top with salsa verde and serve with roasted cherry tomatoes and potatoes.

Ingredients

4 eggs ½ cup plain flour • ¼ chopped onion • 4 cups of grated potato • 2 tbps of garlic • 1 tsp of smoked paprika • 4 rashers of streaky bacon • 4 tbps of butter • 4 fresh vine ripened or ox heart tomatoes • 2 tbps of extra virgin olive oil • 250g fresh ricotta • •

Step 1

Melt the butter in a skillet over a medium heat.

Add the onion, paprika and garlic to the melted butter. Stir and cook until the onion is tender for between 5-7 minutes.

Step 2

Once the potatoes are cool, peel off the skin and grate. The potato will resemble chunky mashed potatoes. Preheat the waffle iron.

Combine the onion mixture, mashed potatoes, flour, eggs, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ teaspoon of black pepper in a large bowl until well blended. Scoop ½ a cup of the mixture into the centre of the waffle iron and close the lid. Cook until golden brown for between 3-5 minutes.

Choose between three different preset heating zones by sliding your pan across the hob. Perfect for when you need to make quick heat changes to create a dish, simply slide your pan over the different heat zones for full control.

Grill the bacon until crispy, slice the tomatoes, sprinkle with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. To serve, place the ricotta on top of the waffles, add the bacon, sliced tomatoes and pour on the excess olive oil.

• 1 large whole snapper (about 1kg), cleaned and scaled • 3 spring onions, roots removed • A thumb-sized knob of ginger, peeled and cut into thin matchsticks • 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine • 2 tbsp soy sauce • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp caster sugar • 2 tbsp vegetable oil • Coriander, to serve

Step 1

Heat your ASKO steam oven to 100˚C on full steam. Place the fish on a plate (as a general rule, you can use any plate that is dishwasher safe in your steam oven on the steam setting).

Step 2

Cut thick diagonal slits into both sides of the fish about 10cm apart and all the way to the bone. Trim the dark green tops from the spring onions and place them into the cavity of the fish. Finely slice the remainder of the spring onion and set aside in the fridge.

Step 3

Mix together the soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, salt, and sugar and stir to dissolve. Pour the mixture over the fish and into the cavity.

Scatter the top of the fish with the ginger.

Cover and seal the edges with aluminum foil.

Place the fish into the oven for 30 minutes then remove and carefully open the aluminium foil, making sure not to lose any of the juices inside. Scatter the fish with the reserved sliced spring onion.

Step 5

Heat the oil in a separate pan until smoking and pour over the fish, spring onion and ginger.

Scatter with coriander and serve.

Larger Cooking Zone SmartZone links two cooking zones and controls them as one, giving you the flexibility to use large pans and easily handle bigger food items.

Step 1 Rinse and dry the chickens. Using kitchen scissors cut down either side of the backbones and remove them. Turn the chicken legs out and place both chickens in the roasting dish, breast side up.

Step 2 Rub zest and juice over chickens and season with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a pan and gently sauté the shallots, ginger, chilli and garlic. Add remaining ingredients (except those to garnish), stir and pour mixture over chicken. Cover and chill for 3-24 hours.

Step 3 Place roasting dish in the lower third of your oven and turn on the Grill function to 190˚C. Grill for 15-20 minutes till golden and then switch the function to Bake for a further 30 minutes or so (or until chicken is cooked and the juices run clear). Garnish with chopped coriander, chilli and lime wedges.

No-fuss Pyroclean

Step 1 Preheat oven to 160°C fan forced. Grease and line a 4cm deep, 20x30cm (base) slab pan with baking paper, allowing it to overhang slightly.

Step 2 Sift all three flours together three times to aerate.

Whisk eggs and sugar in a clean, dry bowl on high speed with an electric mixer for 5 minutes or until thick and pale. Sift flour mixture over egg mixture one final time, and gently fold until just combined.

Gently spread sponge into the pan.

Step 3 Bake for 28-30 minutes or until light golden and sponge springs back when gently touched in the centre. Set aside to cool in the pan. Cover with a clean tea towel and set aside overnight.

Now you can clean your oven using minimal effort and without harsh chemicals.

Two pyrolytic functions safely heat the oven to a high temperature to turn different levels of grease and grime into ash. Then all you need to do is quickly wipe the ash residue away.

Step 4 Remove sponge from the pan and trim the edges.

Cut into 24 4x4cm squares. Spread the coconut on a tray or large plate. Tip the jelly crystals into a deep large bowl. Pour over boiling water, stir to dissolve the crystals, then stir in cold water. Refrigerate 1 hour or until it starts to thicken.

Step 5 Place 4-5 pieces of cake into the jelly, turning until well coated. Remove the cake one piece at a time, allowing excess jelly to drip back into the bowl. Roll in the coconut and place on tray to set. Repeat with the remaining cake, jelly and coconut.
