The Province of Ontario recently passed “Toby’s Bill”, including gender identity and gender expression into the Human Rights Code.

Having experienced the wonders of Toronto for many years, mostly for business purposes, I’m just now beginning to appreciate the tourist side of the city and many of the secret delights that the area holds.

The gay village is changing with the opening of new bars and restaurants. New Markers, are in place designating the entry to the “Gay Village”. A walk up or down Church Street often finds men holding hands.

Queen West is booming with new lofts becoming available. The Gladstone Hotel holds a permanent art exhibit of gay artists on the upper floors.

Downtown Toronto is filled with great hotels where luxury awaits you and affordable prices. Theatres are close by and restaurant and entertainment venues beckon. Many museums and college buildings dot the landscape.

Newly discovered, by me, are the beaches east of the city, where you can frolic in the cool waters of Lake Ontario. No sharks and plenty of eye candy. Come to Toronto, have fun, you’ll want to return again.

Toronto City Overview

s one of North America’s biggest cities, Toronto is easily accessible by air, rail and automobile. About five million Canadian residents live within an hours drive and 60 percent of the U.S. population is within a 90-minute flight.

By Air: Located just west of the city, Pearson International Airport is one of the world’s busiest in terms of passenger traffic with over 65 different airlines serving it. Regional flights are also available from Toronto City Centre Airport which is located on an island in Toronto Harbour. Toronto is a hub for Air Canada with a wide variety of domestic, US and International connections.

Porter Airlines is great for Regional Flights; WestJest and AirCanada are also great Canadian carriers. A flight from New York or Chicago is only about 1 hr, 30 min.

By Rail: Toronto is served by the VIA Rail System with access to all rail service throughout Canada and connection to Amtrak in the United States through Niagara Falls, New York. GO Train is also a great alternative to get around some parts of Ontario. After arriving at Union Station in the heart of downtown Toronto visitors can connect to the subway (called TTC) by underground tunnel.

By Road: Several highways, including Highways 2, 401, 407 and the Queen Elizabeth Way, link surrounding cities to Toronto.

The nearest Canada-U.S. border crossings are at Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Windsor.
