Besides running track and field in my early teens and playing an occasional game of tennis, I cannot recall a time when I took sports seriously. I placed it in my mind that training wasn’t meant for me. In my early twenties, when walking with weights became my go-toflex-ercise, I’d push myself to go further every morning to pass the step I was accustomed to. I committed to pushing myself a bit more when I took on a week-long challenge of eating quinoa instead of my usual yellow rice; truth be told, I liked it so much I extended the challenge for another week until it turned into a month.
In those instances, I developed a mental routine that would hype me up and motivate me to “just keep swimming.” What I was practicing was the art of upliftment. According to the Oxford Dictionary, uplifting means “ raising the level” or “lifting to a higher position”. When we closely inspect just how powerful words are, we can then understand
the validity of how we choose to use our words on ourselves and those around us. The sentiment behind uplifting someone is to elevate one’s attitude and demeanor so that they are seemingly better than when we first saw them.
The dilemma we face as a society today is that collectively, men and women do not fully grasp the importance of the words we choose to use towards or about one another. Because of fragmented dialogue, most men in our community have resolved to be silent, almost passive, while women have filled the gaps to cover, nurture, and defend. We are in an emergency!
Words are to be used as a balm to heal, not to be used as a weapon to destroy.
This upliftment movement is not just about uplifting men; it’s about lifting out of a narrative that dampens a community’s longevity. It’s about showing boys and girls that
the success of their future isn’t dependent on what they do but who they choose to be. It’s about accountability, unity, focused communication, and above all, love– the greatest commandment.
NorthEast Bronx and our partnered communities, it is time that we choose to uplift one another, whether that be encouraging a brother who’s supporting his family as the head of house, extending a helping hand to a single mother who lives down the street; speaking up at your local community center, or being a friend that shines their light and motivates others to do the same.
In whatever capacity you choose to uplift, choose to uplift to heal!
Yours in service, Cliffannie Bowman

In today's rapidly changing world, young men often navigate conflicting societal expectations and personal aspirations, facin g pressures that can alienate them from their communities a collective concern we must address. To heal this rift, we need a holistic support system, driven by compassion and understanding. It demands a community -wide effort involving all stakeholders, especially to benefit Black and brown young men.
The journey from boyhood to manhood is challenging, bombarded with mixed messages about masculinity, success, and emotional expression. Balancing stoicism with emotional intelligence is daunting without a supportive community, leaving young men isolated.
Creating safe environments starts with open communication. Parents, educators, and leaders must engage with young men, validating their experiences to foster trust. Beacons like the Northeast Bronx YMCA, continued support for NYC schools, and enhancing public spaces are vital steps in fortifying a community where the young men of the 12th District can thrive.
Mentorship is also crucial for holistic development, offering guidance, wisdom, and support in resilience, emotional regulati on, and conflict resolution. My commitment to mentorship, through initiatives like my Limitless Leaders Young Men's Mentorship with ASE High School and the Men of Tomorrow at Equality Charter High School, reflects the transformative impact of these relationships on personal growth and opportunity exposure.
Our community’s dedicated network of programs, such as AIM High Empowerment Institute and Mind -Builders Creative Arts Center, play a significant role, fostering belonging and purpose. Inclusive sports teams and clubs build p ositive connections among diverse peers, building community engagement.
Challenging harmful stereotypes about masculinity is essential. Normalizing vulnerability and promoting mental health dialogue foster a compassionate community culture, rejecting tox ic norms and embracing diverse expressions of manhood.
As I introduced legislation for an Office of Black Male Excellence, we can collectively address systemic disparities in socioeconomic status, education, criminal justice, health, and employment faced by Black males. This initiative aims to ensure equitable support and opportunities across our entire city.
Ultimately, healing the relationship between young men and the community demands a concerted effort. By nurturing environments where young men fee l valued and empowered, and by strengthening inter -generational bonds, we uplift our community. Investing in their well -being enriches our fabric for future generations, fostering a brighter future. Strengthening inter-generational relationships enriches t his effort, benefiting from the wisdom and guidance of older generations. Together, we can continue uplifting young men and fortifying our communities for a brighter, more inclusive future where every young man has the opportunity to thrive.

amaican legend Papa San (birth name, Tyrone Thompson) is no stranger to music.
He grew up singing and creating music from the age of 12, performing with other artists more than twice his age. Having had his first hit song while still just a teenager in the mid-80s, Papa San’s phenomenal, on-going reign on international music charts earned him the nickname “Marathon Man,” but it didn’t stop there; he also acquired long runs at the No.1 spot, that no reggae or Dancehall artist to date has surpassed.
In 1994, he filled dance floors around the world with smash hit, “The Program,” which made him the first dancehall artist to hit the top of the Billboard dance chart twice.“Gimme Love” trailed behind, thereafter. Papa San amassed a huge audience that surpassed the Caribbean Islands. His audience broadened to Japan, The UK, Europe, Africa, the U.S. and farther, especially in the 80s and 90s.
San is without a doubt a trailblazer in Gospel Reggae emerging to the forefront as a leader and an innovator in music and ministry.
Despite all the much deserved success, fame, and material wealth this “once poor Jamaican” acquired, he still felt unsatisfied- like something was still missing in his life. Growing up in a Rastafarian culture, Papa San did not know much about Jesus and the Christian faith, but in 1997 life took an unexpected turn. It wasn’t until he was moving in the wrong direction, that Papa San de-
cided to begin a spiritual journey. He reflects on this time in life saying, “as a child growing up, I always believed that if I just achieved certain material things that everything would be all right. As I became older, I had lots of success. I had lots of things, and had tried many things, but I never found the satisfaction I had expected or the fulfillment of peace.” On his journey, he began by simply opening up a Bible. This led to a spiritual transformation, reforming his beliefs and subsequently, he gave his life to Jesus Christ. Papa San acknowledges that receiving Jesus Christ in his life was “the best” decision he’s made.
As a result of his growing relationship with Christ, Papa San’s musical content changed to convey his newfound faith in the Gospel. However, the clean grooves and unforgettable hooks that drew his audience in was highlighted even more as his passion grew. His lyricism and mile-a-minute vocal delivery continued to captivate audiences in every
generation. Papa San is without a doubt a trailblazer in Gospel Reggae emerging to the forefront as a leader and an innovator in music and ministry.
Papa San holds multiple recognitions in awards. He has accrued success as twelve time Marlin Award winner, GMWA Award winner, a Stellar Nominee and Stellar Award winner, as well as a Tamika Award winner. A Dove nomination and Soul Train nomination are also included in his resume.
San is without a doubt a trailblazer in Gospel Reggae emerging to the forefront as a leader and an innovator in music and ministry.
In 2011, Papa San and his wife Debbie, were launched into the Pastoral Ministry and started their joint ministry called “Our Fathers Kingdom International Ministries,” after being ordained ministers of the Gospel. When asked how he balances the role of being a Husband, a Senior Pastor, a Father of six children and an artist, Papa San responds that he balances it all by separating each role: “With my wife, I am her other half; at church I am Pastor Tyrone; with my children I am daddy and on stage I am Papa San.”
The term “financial literacy” is widely used in our daily dialogue, but what does it mean? A single definition does not define this term, however, it covers the following areas:
• Saving – Most of us would probably agree that saving money is important, but being consistent in doing so can be challenging, given all

the expenses of modern living. Still, there are methods available that can be followed, such as having money automatically moved each month from a checking or savings account to a secure financial account that isn’t used for daily expenses.
• Budgeting – Budgeting isn’t necessarily a fun activity — but it’s an

OThere are faults in the system and these are the reasons why it leads to such a high human failure rate
ur society is falling primarily because our men are failing.
Men are failing to become responsible husbands and fathers. They are failing to become gainfully employed. They are disappearing from the schools, homes, streets, workplaces, and churches. Tragically, the males of our society are filling up the jails, prisons and cemeteries. If this is not addressed with immediacy, the society will collapse.
We need a time of deliberate effort to focus upon the uplifting of males and restoring them to natural and traditional roles. We cannot afford to become so blind as to think that we can depend upon technology and robots to sustain society.
The world cannot operate without men.
At what point do we admit that there is a system failure? If an airplane had a failure rate of even 1%, every plane of that model would be permanently grounded. If an appliance had a reputation of 5% failure, people would not purchase it. It would be recalled. If less than half a percent of a certain manufactured food was found to be tainted, word would go out to remove it from every shelf.
As with our daily lives, we cannot afford to have a system fail the men of our society. We will not be able to uplift men unless there is a radical change, starting with our education system
The current mass education system mandates the enrollment of every child into schools of mainly academic settings; focusing heavily on science and math. Each child is taken to a particular building, placed into a classroom, confined to sit at a desk for up to eight hours per day, up to 6 days per week, and over a period of time starting at 2.2 years old to age 18 and above. This training is purposed to accomplish one thing: condition an individual to sit behind a desk for the rest of their life. Remember the scripture, “Train up a child in the way it should go, and when it is old it will not depart from it.” We are
training and conditioning all of our children to sit behind desks, and if they do not have a mind to do desk jobs, they are conditioned to think there is not much else they can or will achieve. They are in ruin.
I will point out that many American manufacturers have resorted to offshoring manufacturing and shipping jobs overseas due to American employers complaining that students who are not fit to work. Why? Because they were not trained to work. They were forced to sit behind desks for most of their formative years, and miss the critical years to learn, perfect, and inculcate the work ethic and skills they need to be successful.
Here is a list of faults within the system and why it leads to such a high human failure rate.
1. Human beings were not designed to sit behind a desk for any length of time. This is very unnatural. Human beings were created or evolved to hunt, fish, cultivate land, fight, build, explore, etc. These skills must be learned early.
2. Not every person has the capacity to succeed at academics. Should you be in doubt, ask yourself; can every
Congressman Ritchie Torres is a fighter from the Bronx who has spent his entire life working for the community he calls home. Like many people in the Bronx, poverty and struggle have never been abstractions to him, and he governs from a place of lived experience.
Ritchie’s mother single-handedly raised him, his twin brother, and his sister in a public-housing project. At
the City Council, Ritchie stood out, and during his seven-year tenure he tenaciously tackled problems big and small for the Bronx and New York City. He passed over forty articles of legislation, including legislation protecting the City’s affordable housing stock and tackling the city’s opioid epidemic. As the Chairman overseeing NYCHA, he held the first committee hearing ever in public housing, which led to a $3 billion-dollar FEMA investment, the
largest in NYC history. As Chair of the Oversight & Investigations Committee, Ritchie has led investigations into the heating outages and lead poisoning at NYCHA, the Taxi Medallion scandal, the City’s controversial Third-Party Transfer program, and Kushner Companies.
Ritchie currently lives in the Bronx and represents NY-15 in Congress.

Recording Gospel Artist Kevin Heath is known for being a kingdom believer, an evangelist, a Preacher, a motivational speaker, a counselor. Above all, Minister Kevin Heath is known for being a jovial man of God.
He is a native of Jamaica who hails from the Parish of St. Elizabeth. He migrated to the Parish of St. James where he got married and he lived in the Cayman Islands for 12 and a half years, then returned to Jamaica to do full time ministry and now resides in the Parish of St. Catherine.
After surviving a fatal accident, Minister Kevin Heath challenged the gates of hell when he returned from his “out of body” experience and made a vow to make Jesus known in every corner of the world he touches. With the determination and tenacity of a war-
rior, he went on to pursue a career in ministerial music and won the Cayman Islands Gospel Festival in 2012 with his hit song “True Friend.” He was also Gospel Artist of the Year in the Cayman Islands in 2013. In 2018, his song “I’m Above ‘’ broke through charts and was nominated Local Gospel Hit of the Year.
Mr. Heath has shared the stage with a number of dominating artists of the gospel industry, including Minister Carlene Davis, Donnie McClurkin, DJ Nicholas, Papa San, Lieutenant Stitchie, Kevin Downswell, Clifford (FYAH) Henry, Todd Dulaney, Travis Greene, and the late Sister Scully, to name a few.
Minister Heath has spent his time traveling and ministering in varying parishes of Jamaica, and continues to make his mark in the Caribbean. He has seen the walks
of those in Honduras, St. Maarten, and the Grand Cayman. He’s even spread the Word of God internationally; ministering in Canada, the United States of America, England and Europe.
Kevin Heath is happily married to his admirable wife, Tamara Heath. Their union has produced two boys; Kevroy and Tadrew. Kevin continues to reach the multitude of people wherever he goes, whether on school tours, canvassing different churches and corporate facilities, children’s home, the infirmary, charity events, concerts, inner city - wherever he is, the presence of God follows, as he makes great effort to reach souls and help bring them to Christ.
He is living proof that what God brings to life, He is able to sustain in POWER!
important one! It has become easier than ever, given the variety of budgeting tools available online. By tracking your spending every month and organizing it into categories, you may be able to find areas where you can cut back.
• Borrowing – We are all prone to carry various kinds of debt at various points in our lives, but it’s important to manage debt load so it doesn’t become burdensome. One way of achieving this goal is to use “good” debts wisely — such as a lowrate mortgage on your home — and avoid “bad” debts — such as highrate credit cards used for unnecessary purchases.
• Investing – As you go through life, you’ll likely have a variety of financial desires; making a down payment on a house, sending your
children to college, and attaining a comfortable retirement lifestyle are examples of financial goals. To achieve one or more of these, you’ll need to invest. It is important to learn about different types of investments and how to develop an investment strategy appropriate for your objectives, risk tolerance, and timeline.
We aren’t born with these pertinent skills — we have to learn them.
Unfortunately, as valuable as these tools are, they aren’t widely taught to young and older generations, alike. In fact, according to a 2023 Edward Jones study conducted with Morning Consult, only 20% of respondents reported receiving financial education in school. If you have younger children, it is important to show and teach them money management skills. You will likely find that they
enjoy learning about these matters.
Financial education isn’t just for kids.
If you feel that you are lacking in any of the key financial management areas mentioned above, you can always educate yourself by reading or talking to people knowledgeable in these subjects. You might also find it valuable to work with a financial professional — someone who will take a holistic approach to your finances and make appropriate suggestions.
Finding the right home is exciting, and we’re committed to making homebuying as easy as possible. The Chase Closing Guarantee1 will help give you the confidence you need to plan your move. Since childhood, Judith had a myriad of experiences that helped to shape her identity. She found solace in music and began her journey in the 1980’s beginning as a background singer for secular artists like Richie Stephens. In 1999, the Evangelist was invited by a friend to a local church in Clarendon and it was there that her life changed. Judith Gayle was nominated for the Mahalia Jackson award in Canada in 2007 and one year later, she placed 2nd in the Jamaica National Song Festival with the song “Mi Nah Lef Jamaica”. In 2009, Judith was named Female Artist of the Year, in Jamaica, earning her the title International Gospel Singer & Songwriter. Judith recalls that her appearance at the distinguished Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York was a major highlight of her life in 2015, where she sang alongside some of America’s greats, including Vickie Winans. In 2016, Judith was nominated for the Sterling Gospel Music Awards in Jamaica.
Born in Clarendon, Jamaica, Judith A. Gayle did not have the privilege of completing high school, but that did not deter her from successfully pursuing higher education in later years. In her pursuit of knowledge, she attended the Jamaica Open Bible Institute from 2009 to 2010 and completed her studies when she moved to New York, graduating 2014 from Canon University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology.
Evangelist Judith A. Gayle is a prime example of God’s faithfulness to
transform the broken to refined and whole. Her testimony is a triumphant story of despair transformed to a life of divine purpose.
Ms. Judith Gayle has been releasing gospel music over the years, inspiring millions with hits such as “Bigger God”, “Survivor”, “Things Already Betta” and “Stay with God”. Her mega-hit “Give Me Jesus” has become an anthem at concerts, on radio stations and has amassed over 7 million views on YouTube; an achievement that is second to none among Caribbean gospel artists. Her six albums to date include: The Sun Shines Again (2003); Broken to be Blessed (2005); Designed to Worship (2009); I Believe (2012); It’s Gonna Be Alright (2013) and The Winner in Me (2017). Evangelist Judith Gayle was ordained as a Minister in 2014 by Bishop Michael A. Frith of the Family of Christ Church of God Ministries International in The Bronx, New York. She serves as the Worship Leader at The Temple Of Restoration in Brooklyn, New York, under the leadership of Bishop Angelo Barboso. In addition to her ministry of singing, Judith is also an author and humanitarian. She has published two inspiring and thought provoking books, titled, Broken to be Blessed; Destined to Win and This is Real, Take the Mask Off. She currently has a children’s book on the way.
In recognizing and highlighting the gift of God, Judith believes that if you allow God to mold you, you will be the vessel He calls you to be. Judith Gayle is living proof of the life transforming power of the Eternal Father.

The introduction of financial literacy is influential in helping children develop a healthy relationship with money, especially when shown at an early age. As parents, it’s important to give your child the right tools and resources so they make knowledgeable and precise financial decisions. Here are some ways to help them understand and appreciate the value of money.
Earning Money - The first step in helping children understand the value of money is by showing them the connection between money and work. Giving them an allowance for doing chores like cleaning their room, walking the dog, or babysitting, will help them grasp the concept that money is earned through work. This practice sets the tone and builds strong work ethic and an appreciation for money.
Saving - Encouraging your child to save for specific goals can be both educational and motivating; whether they are saving for a new toy or a
special outing. Setting a savings target (goal) teaches children about the importance of delayed gratification. Using visual aids like charts or using tangible measures (like a jar/piggy bank) can make saving fun and easy
count online will make this come to life for your young one!
Budgeting - Children often learn best through the lens of experience. Including them in family budgeting
to understand. Watching their savings grow is a way for them to build strategic and healthy saving habits. Opening a savings account for your child is another effective way in teaching financial literacy. Parents can explain how deposits work, what interests are, and the overall benefit of saving money in a bank. Regular visits to the bank or reviewing the ac-
activities can provide practical financial lessons. For example, planning the budget for a family outing can teach them about prioritizing expenses and making cost-effective choices. Real-life practices may help them understand the importance of budgeting needs vs wants and managing money wisely.
The Negative Impact of Drugs and Gun Violence on Our Youth
Drugs and gun violence deeply scar communities, particularly impacting our youth. These issues jeopardize physical safety, inflict psychological trauma, disrupt education, and erode the social fabric of communities.
Impact on Youth: Youth exposed to drugs and gun violence face severe emotional and psychological distress, including chronic anxiety, depression, and PTSD. This fear and instability hinder their ability to concentrate in school, leading to poor academic performance and increased dropout rates. The normalization of drugs and violence can foster a cycle of aggression, as young people may turn to drugs and violence as a coping mechanism or a means of protection.
Community Consequences: Drugs and gun violence weaken the community’s sense of security and trust.
It discourages investment in affected areas, leading to economic decline and a lack of opportunities for residents. Social cohesion is compromised as fear and suspicion grow among community members, impacting local businesses, healthcare systems, and overall quality of life.
CAPTAIN I CAN! and Mrs. Sonshine’s Role: CAPTAIN I CAN! and Mrs. Sonshine are uniquely positioned to make a significant impact in combating drugs and gun violence. As dynamic motivational speakers and community leaders, they bring hope, inspiration, and practical solutions to at-risk youth through education, empowerment, and community engagement.
Education and Empowerment: Through school tours and community events, CAPTAIN I CAN! and Mrs. Sonshine educate youth about the dangers of drugs and gun violence and the importance of making positive life choices. They emphasize the value of self-worth, resilience, and conflict resolution. By sharing stories of
triumph over adversity, they inspire young people to envision a future free from drugs and violence and seek solutions to, rather than be part of, the destruction.
CAPTAIN I CAN! and Mrs. Sonshine foster collaboration between schools, churches, parents, and local organizations to create safe spaces for youth. They advocate for mentorship programs, after-school activities, and counseling services that provide support and guidance. Their initiatives, such as the “Drugs and Violence NO WAY” tour, highlight the importance of community unity in addressing violence and promoting peace.
Drugs and gun violence threaten the well-being of our youth and communities. However, with the dedicated efforts of CAPTAIN I CAN! and Mrs. Sonshine, there is hope for positive change. By educating, empowering, and engaging with the community, they can help break the cycle of violence and build a safer, more nurturing environment for the next generation.

Corinthians 13:4-7
“Don’t be afraid to try new things. These new things can be some of the greatest experiences you may have.”
-
Kris Williams
Dear young man,
1. It’s okay to put down the things that feel too heavy for you. The weight of the world is too much for any one person to carry.
2. It’s okay to dwell in spaces where your emotions take up space. Bottles were never shaped for holding heartache.
3. Sensitivity is a superpower, not a curse word. Let no one shun you for being expressive and empathetic.
- Damone Johnson
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
The father is sovereign, and His law is what we should follow, especially the first law of LOVE. We as men should always go by the first law of love, for the Lord has given us love. We should remember love is not bragging or boastful or rude- it’s benevolent.
- Ian Mayne
We are living in unprecedented times and we need our men to rise up and take their rightful place in their families and community.
There is no other time to let our light shine before men than now, so that they may come to know our Lord and Savior Jesus. It is my prayer that we will rise up in this hour.
- Garrett Mitchell
“Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12
Paul was admonishing his young protégé Timothy not to allow anyone to look down on him, or to despise him, because he was young. He encouraged him to be an example to everyone in his speech and also in his conduct.
Like Paul, I am therefore encouraging all my young people, men and women alike, not to let anyone despise you because of your age, but to be an example to everyone; both young and old. We are at a crucial time when all eyes are on this younger generation to lead the world into the future. This can only be done when you conduct yourselves in accordance to God’s will and purpose which He has for your lives. When your life displays the supernatural control and leading of the Holy Spirit in faith, and purity then you will be uplifted and be a force to reckon with! Stand firm for Christ and shine your light for Him at all times, in this world of darkness. God Bless.

It felt great to take a chance on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur because for many years I saw my father work hard as a humble tailor to provide for his family and it inspired me. There are many people in the community that looked up to my father who not only worked for years, but also stayed faithful to his wife, and sacrificed to provide and protect his children. Along with my father, my greatest inspiration is my confidence in God to complete what He has started in me. In business, I realize that patience and excellent customer service is a standard and it relates to my personal integrity in treating people better than I would want to be treated. This allows me to relate to a diverse group of people. The restaurant business is full of challenges, but with God leading me I am resolved in the results of His direction and plans.

Men in the community need to become leaders of their households and give back to their community by serving others. Men need a close walk with God so they can make sound choices that will inspire the youth in the community, as they are the future
This year, we are highlighting men in various communities within the Bronx who, with grit and determination, purposed within themself to take a risk. They’ve found that in order to thrive in what makes one passionate, you must dare to dream, lead, and be inspired to inspire!
for us all. Father figures are needed so that we as men can be the kings and priests that God intended for us to be.
I am forever thankful and grateful to God for the opportunity to have my own business, and I plan to steward what He has given me well, along with the plethora of people that have supported me throughout the years.
Many will say that they attribute their success to their grit and the goals they set for themselves, with little to no help along the way. This sentiment isn’t the same for restaurant owner, Leon Williamson. Though he has grown up wanting to make a difference for himself, it is his parents’ work ethic and stamina that gave him the courage and confidence to take a chance on himself. Williamson’s greatest inspiration are those he holds near to his heart, as well as the Jamaican culture he was born and grew up in. His hope for the men in the community is to desire change within themselves; to be a better father, and to be rev-

olutionary men for the community around them.
Whenone is faced with taking a chance on themself, it can be met with hesitation or timidity. There is no certainty that there will be success on the other side of perseverance, but when passion mixes with taking a risk, it doesn’t matter what comes out of it- as long as you love what you do, and you do it from your heart. Peart ascribes that his passion was developed in his childhood, always having a pot to cook in even if it was on the sidewalk. In building his business, he never lost sight of the motto: just throw and taste, and it has worked. There was always a vision and a passion to create new recipes and even develop ones he’d been taught as a child.
3
Mr. Peart’s hope for the community lies in the generation that is to come. In stepping up to be a Father to the fatherless, he “does everything in power to cover the kids” as an extension of a male who is a provider.

Technology’s intricate nature has always fascinated me. The most intriguing, yet challenging aspect of technology is its rapid evolution. Just as we become adept at using one tool or system, a new version or an entirely new innovation emerges. This continuous cycle of learning and adaptation is both exhilarating and demanding. It forces us to stay perpetually curious and open to change, pushing the boundaries of our understanding and capabilities.
When it comes to the advancement of our community through technolo-
gy, we are witnessing a significant increase. Innovations in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science are revolutionizing the way we approach everyday problems. These technologies are not just tools for efficiency but are actively reshaping our social fabric. For instance, AI-driven healthcare solutions are improving patient outcomes, while machine learning algorithms help in tackling climate change by predicting environmental patterns. Moreover, with the rise of remote work, technology has made it possible for individuals from diverse backgrounds to collaborate seamlessly,

One of the most significant benefits of working in the tech industry is the potential for higher wages, particularly once you break into specialized roles. This financial advantage can provide greater stability and opportunities for personal and professional growth. Additionally, the knowledge gained from working in tech can be incredibly empowering, allowing me to contribute to various causes and initiatives. For instance, I often volunteer my skills to help out at my church or local non-profit organizations. The 47th Precinct Community Council is an open forum that welcomes residents and businesses interested in establishing and maintaining working partnerships with the New York City Police Department. The Council is a group of individuals that represent the community to the local authority and facilitates a wide range of activities that promotes the well-being of their communities. They are the bridge between the men and women in uniform, and the community residents. The Council proficiently brings people of various walks of life together to unify to make things happen as well as encourage Community Councils to protect and promote the value of their community. After the Pandemic of 2020, the Community Council maintained the steadfastness of meeting together in
person on a monthly basis, with the sole purpose of promoting the quality-of-life issues that affect our community. There are two major events promoted each year, amongst many other programs. The first major event includes an annual breakfast where officers who are doing above and beyond in their service are honored. Since becoming the President, Chief Adeyemi has introduced awards for citizens in the community, called Citizen of the Month, and a prestigious award for Faith Leaders.
The second annual event is the National Night out event that is observed on the first Tuesday of August. We use the opportunity to preach Love, Unity, Selfless Service to one another, and above all encourage a platform where residents are the eyes and the ears of the community. With an average population of more
than 2,000 at our annual event, we use the opportunity to promote police-partnership and send a clear message that both the community and the police are essential in working together to combat crime.
The Precinct Community Council meets regularly on the second Wednesday of each month. This monthly meeting is rotated across different churches or schools within the precinct. At these meetings, the commanding officer updates the community on the trend of crime statistics within 28 working days. During each meeting, we also honor a man or woman in uniform who shows superb excellency on their job.
We welcome all who desire to further our community for the future. The time is now!

Interviewer: In your opinion, what is the #1 need, or what is the missing ingredient to further the community for the better?
Rev. Johnson: In my opinion, the number one thing that is missing to further the community for the better is collaboration. I am speaking about and to the faith community, primarily of the NorthEast (NE) Bronx. We are laboring in our churches and we do a lot for our churches, but if we are going to fulfill the mandate
of scripture to “go into all the world and preach the Gospel,” we have to become co-laborers. We need to continue taking care of our individual churches, but we also have to come together in practical, meaningful ways for the sake of the Kingdom of God. The gospel of salvation is for the saving of souls. There is also the Gospel of the Kingdom, which is for the transformation of society. For us, we need a plan for the transformation of the NE Bronx. What does collaboration look like? A core
group of faith leaders meeting on a frequent basis to fellowship and encourage each other; to lend support where needed, to envision what the NE Bronx will be for the emerging generations. It looks like developing a research-based report that provides information and analysis on the complexities of the communities and cultures represented in a specific location and prioritizing the needs in housing, education, healthcare, youth unemployment, and gang violence (to name a few of the areas that
need immediate and urgent attention). It takes COLLABORATION.
Interviewer: What would you say pushed you in the direction to serve the community in the capacity you do?
Rev. Johnson: To understand why I am so community-driven and cultured towards serving, let me take you back to my childhood. The first time I remember being punished by my grandmother was because I went and helped my neighbor with his chores before I did mine. She had no problem with me helping my neighbor, but she helped me in understanding getting my priorities in order. So, I get much satisfaction from serving others. I served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, and I have been serving as a Pastor for over 30 years. I currently serve as the Executive Director of Bronx Neighborhood Housing Services, so I am wired to serve.
Interviewer: You mentioned your childhood; what was it like in terms of the things you’ve witnessed, and were you inspired to attain the best as a young black boy?
Rev. Johnson: My childhood was good. I didn’t know it then, but in retrospect, it was better than most! I was raised by my paternal grandparents up to age 15, in the mountains of East Rural St. Andrew, Jamaica– it’s in an area called Craighton, near Irish Town. My aunt was my teacher until I passed the common entrance exam and went to Ardenne High School. The downside of my life was that my mother was in the United States, so I didn’t know her until age 13 when I received news that she was coming to visit me. It was a life-changer because my cousins whom I was always around had both their parents, and I could not account for my mother nor my father. Two years later, I found myself in Hartford, Connecti-
cut, with my mother and her family. That changed everything! I finished school and joined the USAF. I was cultured to attain the best; in my orbit, only the best was good enough, so expectations were made very clear. We were pointed to our aunts and uncles who, for the most part, were white-collar workers excelling
mentorship. The large number of young men being raised by their single mothers need more help. Mothers do their best, but we need more men mentoring young men. This one solution can help solve many of the other challenges our young men are facing.
in their craft, so we had to uphold the family name.
Interviewer: What do you desire to see in the coming years regarding the businesses in our community and /or the ones to come?
Rev. Johnson: My desire in the coming years is to see a move of God among our leaders. I believe we are made up of three distinct groupings – Faith & Community Leaders, Elected Officials & Public Servants, and Business Leaders. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel– the systems and structures we need to revive our people and our communities exist. Let’s call forward the leaders; they are in our midst, commission them, and follow them as they follow the Kingdom mandate for our communities.
Interviewer: What is your hope for the men in and outside of our community?
Rev. Johnson: My hope for the men in and outside of our community is that we can uplift each other through the many avenues available, such as
I close with the lyrics of a song titled, “If I Can Help Somebody.” In one verse, it captures everything I have experienced and believe life is all about:
“If I can help somebody, as I travel along If I can help somebody, with a word or song If I can help somebody, from doing wrong
No, my living shall not be in vain.”
- Alma B. Androzzo

Theheart of Jamaica is found in its food, The Arts (specifically, music & fashion) and its community. Jamaica’s history of fighting for freedom and fairness also inspires respect. This same rigor and determination has spilled over to the sports and during competition time, Jamaica takes the cake for being the loudest and the proudest in the stands. With 26 gold medals, 87 Olympic medals under the belt (and more is sure to come!) the passion of Jamaicans both “back ah yad” and “inna foreign” never fail to influence us all, collectively.
Known as a melting pot, Jamaica is known for its colorful, creative, and generational culture. Jamaica’s diversity is credited to the myriad of people who are born and raised in the land of beauty, mixed with those who committed to making the island their home. It’s no surprise that the beloved island of Jamaica has adapted the motto: “Out of Many, One People.”
Thoughwe celebrate Jamaica’s uniqueness in our daily walk, a special ceremony is commemorated annually to truly emphasize just how special Jamaica’s independence is, and what it means generationally. There are a plethora of events that engage the communities on this significant day, but a major part of Jamaican Independence Day celebrations is the Grand Gala. There are hundreds of performers that contribute to the gala’s success, hitting home the triumph and jubilation this country embraces.
Discussing suicide, especially in men, is a critical and sensitive issue. Researchers state that over 800,000 people die by suicide every year, making this epidemic among the leading cause of death worldwide. Suicide knows no age barrier, no racial barrier, and no class barrier, as persons who are suicidal are from all walks of life and are from all age ranges. Statistics show that men are at a higher risk of suicide compared to women, and in many countries, men are about three to four times more likely to die by suicide than women. Tradition-
al masculinity often discourages men from expressing vulnerability or seeking help. Phrases like “man up” or “tough it out” can contribute to men feeling isolated or ashamed about their mental health struggles. This reluctance to seek support can exacerbate feelings of hopelessness and despair.
In a community filled with doorto-door neighbors, it is a wonder why anyone would feel lonely or feel like they are without help. It is important for everyone to recognize warning signs of suicidal
thoughts and/or behaviors, especially in men, in order to create a safe space of refuge and resource for a man you care for.
Here’s How To Be A Resource & Beacon of Support (not limited to)
Listen and Validate Feelings:
Let him express his thoughts and feelings without judgment. Show empathy and understanding. Sometimes, just being heard can be incredibly comforting.
Stay Patient and Persistent:
Understanding that recovery can be a long process is important. Continue offering support even if progress seems slow. Your ongoing presence can be a lifeline.
Encourage Healthy Habits:
Encourage activities that promote mental well-being, such as exercise, a balanced diet, and sleep. While these alone won’t resolve his situation, they can improve his overall mood and resilience.

person excel at music or athletics? Is every person good at mathematics? Obviously not. So why have we convinced ourselves that every child can learn and excel at STEM particularly sitting at a desk for up to 20 years?
3. Because sitting behind a desk is so unnatural, many children find it difficult. They lose interest, they become active and they become disruptive. They want to and need to move. The unfortunate thing is that when children are unable to sit still behind desks, they are labeled as having learning disorders and diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). They are then prescribed medication and stigmatized as failures. This is most misguided and destructive especially to males.
4. Consider these questions: If we want to produce great athletes, (which America does quite successfully) do we wait until the person is 22 years old to begin their training? No! If we want to produce skilled musicians, do we wait until the person is old, or do we not engage them in music in their childhood? At what point do we start to train our gymnasts, or artists, or actors? The answer to all these questions is, of course, in their childhood. If all of the aforementioned is true, why should we think we can confine our population to desks and then at age 22 we say to them, go get a job and work in fields not related to desk jobs?
5. While it is arguable that everyone should know how to read, write, and do basic mathematics, there is no reason to require the masses to spend so many years learning and studying subjects that they will never use in life, while for lack of time, not getting the opportunity to learn those skills are more useful.
6. The modern education system has very little to offer the ordinary male. Many of them simply drop out and lacking alternatives, they resort to hanging out on the streets and getting in trouble.
7. Added to this, there are no longer many male role models in the schools. The resulting problem is of such severity as is evidenced by the fact that many of our males are emulating feminine appearances and behaviors.
8. Our women can scarcely find a good eligible bachelor, because after so many years males leave school with little or no employable skills.
The main contributor to men failing is the misguided school system. Change is needed urgently.
How many years do you think it would require for training a person to excel in the field of agriculture, or carpentry, or any of the trades or crafts? This is not a mystery, we know from history that when they begin early, people can master their craft and trade for lifelong occupation. In the past, males and females were becoming adults and assuming adult roles of work, marriage, parenthood, and family from their early teens. Today, many of our people are not at the means to support themselves or one another, even into their thirties and forties. Something has gone very wrong!
We can quickly determine which children are cut out for academic learning and which ones have other passions. We can do this by simply administering tests to examine a child’s abilities and interests, and once done, we will soon learn what their niche is. This is how the education of a child used to be determined.
Schools need to backtrack and offer a more diverse educational experience, especially for males who are more inclined to hands-on manual labor.
Further, somehow most of us have allowed ourselves to be convinced into believing that all our children are supposed to go to college and
become lawyers and doctors. If that is the case, who will be the mothers, farmers, carpenters, builders, barbers, shoemakers, dressmakers, cooks, etc.?
The misguided education system has led to the destruction of a plethora of men and women. There can be no remedy for the upliftment of men unless we radically revolutionize the education system from its myopic focus on academics, to a wiser system that reflects the traditional way of developing human beings to become well-adjusted contributing members of society.
I should add that we create some of the most skilled athletes in the world. Competitive sports is a massive and very lucrative industry, and yet, the educational system has not failed to build state of the art gymnasiums and sports fields. In the same breath, we do not wait until our children are beyond 18 years old to begin their athletic training. In fact, we encourage all children to participate in physical education (also known as PE class). We encourage this so that we can discover potential athletes early. Then, we begin training them when they are very young, condition them to excel in their sports, according to their gift or talent. We are wise enough to know that children need to begin actively participating, and we make provision and allowance for it. We make allowance for them getting hurt, allowance for them to work hard on a regular basis, and allowance so that they develop the discipline, mental fortitude, skills and stamina in order to succeed and win.
What we do for scientists, and athletes, we need to do for every other vocation. The remedy is to discover and expose them early for hands-on opportunities to learn. Only then can we develop skills to become successful mothers and fathers, farmers and mechanics, cobblers and dressmakers, cooks and artists.
This is the way to upliftMENt!

The potential dangers of balancing leadership in the family today are many. The possibility of infected leaders and the transference of related crises must be considered. Spiritual differences, unfaithfulness, divorce/separation, mutual respect, trust, over-commitment are just a few examples. There were times in my life when I felt that I was a total failure because I devalued my responsibilities and succumbed to areas of weaknesses. I have since learned that no failure is irreparable; that happiness is not dependent on riches or accumulation of wealth but on contentment; that differences of opinion should not be fuel for discord and division, and that weakness always positions us to be recipients of the grace of God.
The issue of male/fathers and the impact of leadership on the family, refers to the ability of men to engage actively and constructively within their communities, aiming to foster environments that benefit the family’s development. This involves advocating for policies and practices that support health, education, and overall growth. They work collaboratively with schools, local organizations,
and other community stakeholders to create supportive networks and resources. Their efforts ensure that families are provided with opportunities for success and a nurturing environment, promoting positive outcomes in their spiritual, physical, emotional, and social development.
Throughout biblical history, fathers have been portrayed as key figures in providing direction and guidance to their families. This divine positioning is exemplified in the lives of several patriarchs. For instance, Abraham was directed by God to journey to a land chosen specifically for him. Similarly, Jacob received divine instructions to return to his ancestral land with his family. In another instance, Joseph was guided by God to escape to Egypt in order to protect his family. These narratives underscore the pivotal role of fathers in leading their families according to divine guidance.
The power of a man/father’s voice can be transformative, especially
when channeled through meaningful leadership development and civic engagement opportunities. The synergy of leadership development and civic engagement empowers men to affect meaningful change. Their active participation leads to stronger families, better schools, safer neighborhoods, and more responsive governance. When fathers are supported and encouraged to take on leadership roles, the ripple effect benefits everyone.
In conclusion, when amplified through structured leadership in the family, the voice of men/fathers can be a powerful force for good. By investing in these opportunities, we unlock the potential of men/fathers to lead, inspire, and create lasting positive impacts in their communities and beyond!

Work with him to develop a safety plan. This could include identifying triggers, coping strategies, and contacts for support. A safety plan can provide practical steps to manage moments of crisis. Additionally, removing harmful items and securing them in locations only known to another trusted individual.
Know the crisis resources available in your area, such as suicide prevention hotlines, emergency services, or mental health crisis teams. In the U.S., the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline can be reached by dialing or texting 988.
The loss of a man to suicide ripples through families and communities, leaving emotional scars and unresolved grief. The stigma surrounding mental health struggles and suicide often impedes open discussions, making it more difficult for others to recognize and address the signs of distress in men. Ad-
dressing these issues requires a concerted effort to challenge stereotypes, promote mental health awareness, and foster environments where men feel safe to seek help and express their emotions.
