ROZAS BOTRÁN FOUNDATION From generation to generation, the Rozas Botrán family has been supporting Guatemalans in the areas of health and education. Mrs. Clarita de Botrán was the pioneer, followed by her daughter, Amparo Botrán de Rozas and her husband Ramón Rozas Sobrino. Today, the third generation, headed by Jose Rozas Botrán, continues the work initiated by his grandmother, and the fourth generation has started to get involved through Cristina Rozas-Botrán. In 1985, Jose Rozas Botrán founded the art gallery that bears his family’s name in order to promote Guatemalan contemporary artistic expressions. In 1996, the initial project adopted social responsibility labor principals, which lead to the creation of the Rozas Botrán Foundation, an institution with comprehensive and ambitious social objectives. Since then, its tasks have multiplied and during 2016 it will celebrate 15 years of serving Guatemalans in the areas of health, education and scientific research in health issues, as well as in the fields of culture, the arts, and Guatemalan artistic heritage conservation. FUNDACIÓN ROZAS BOTRÁN De generación en generación, la familia Rozas Botrán ha venido brindando apoyo a la población guatemalteca en las áreas de la salud y la educación. La pionera de este trabajo fue la Señora Clarita de Botrán y le siguieron su hija Amparo Botrán de Rozas y su esposo Ramón Rozas Sobrino. Actualmente, la tercera generación, encabezada por Jose Rozas Botrán, continúa con la labor iniciada por su abuela y la cuarta generación empieza a involucrarse por medio de Cristina Rozas-Botrán. En 1985, Jose Rozas Botrán fundó la galería de arte que lleva el nombre de su familia con el propósito de promover las expresiones artísticas contemporáneas de Guatemala. En 1996, el proyecto inicial adoptó la responsabilidad social como un principio laboral, lo que llevó a la creación de la Fundación Rozas Botrán, una institución con objetivos sociales amplios y ambiciosos. A partir de entonces, las tareas se han ido multiplicando y en el 2016 celebrará 15 años de servir a Guatemala en las áreas de la salud, la educación y la investigación científica para la salud, así como en los ámbitos de la cultura, el arte y la conservación del patrimonio artístico de Guatemala.

The Rozas Botrán Foundation donated in 2002, a plot of land located on the road to Bárcenas, Santa Lucía Milpas Altas, in the department of Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, where the Hospital and Hospice San José, the Science and Education Institute for Human Genetic and Metabolic Disease Research, and the Center for the Scientific Salvage, Study and Analysis of Art (CREA) are located. These institutions were established with the objective to offer dignified attention to those in most need. INVEGEM The Science and Education Institute for Human Genetic and Metabolic Disease Research is an organization conceived for the assistance of individuals and families affected by the most prevalent hereditary diseases of genetic origin in the American continent population. Within its main functions is to cooperate in the formation of care givers specialized in health. SAN JOSÉ HOSPICE AND HOSPITAL San José Hospice was founded in Guatemala in 1989. It is a non-government, non-profit organization with a national social scope. It assists children who have tested HIV positive, and seronegative children as inpatients. It also assists in an outpatient basis children and adults who are HIV positive, patients who have been exposed to HIV and those who are seronegative. CREA The Center for the Scientific Salvage, Study and Analysis of Art emerged in order to give scientific support to the practice of artistic heritage conservation and the restoration of cultural assets in Guatemala. CREA complements its work by supporting the activities organized by the Rozas Botrán Foundation for the management and conservation of artwork.

ART IN THE STREETS The Rozas Botrán Foundation, in alliance with Paseo Cayalá, has presented a Cultural Passage in Guatemala City. Illuminated advertising urban furnishings exhibit a collection of ten paintings for four weeks, turning the city into a grand open-air art gallery. THE ROZAS BOTRÁN GALLERY In 2012, the Rozas Botrán Foundation opened its doors to the public through the Rozas Botrán Gallery, located in zone 14. At the same time, and through an alliance with Paseo Cayalá, it opened a gallery branch in its mall. These venues contribute to the Foundation’s efforts for social development benefiting the health sectors it supports. LIVE GALLERY The live gallery is a new concept of the Rozas Botrán Foundation, with the collaboration of Paseo Cayalá. It promotes different types of art and design activities in order to attract a new audience to the world of the arts. The idea is that art should not be exclusive, but inclusive and for all. The gallery will stay “alive” and dynamic during each exhibit using the venue as a study for artists and a workshop for the audience. OPEN GALLERY In order to reinforce the diffusion of its cultural and artistic activities in Paseo Cayalá, the Rozas Botrán Foundation has started an innovative concept through activities on its main street, which opens into the Cayala’s Grand Plaza. Visitors find information about the activities taking place in the area, as well as reviews of artist supported by the Foundation.
CAMPUS MÉDICO SAN JOSÉ En el año 2002, la Fundación Rozas Botrán donó un terreno en el Km. 28.5 carretera a Bárcenas, Santa Lucía Milpas Altas, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, para dar atención digna a los más desamparados. En ese lugar se encuentran el Hospital Hospicio San José, el Instituto para la Investigación Científica y la Educación acerca de las Enfermedades Genéticas y Metabólicas Humanas y el Centro de Rescate, Estudio y Análisis Científico para el Arte (CREA). INVEGEM El Instituto para la Investigación Científica y la Educación acerca de las Enfermedades Genéticas y Metabólicas Humanas atiende a individuos y familias afectados por enfermedades hereditarias de origen genético que se evidencian en la población latinoamericana. Entre otras funciones, coopera con la formación de recurso humano especializado en salud. HOSPITAL HOSPICIO SAN JOSÉ Fue fundado en Guatemala en 1989. Es una entidad no gubernamental y no lucrativa, con proyección social a nivel nacional. Atiende como pacientes internos a niños VIH positivo y niños que son seronegativos, y de forma ambulatoria a niños y adultos VIH positivos, pacientes que han sido expuestos al virus y aquéllos que son seronegativos. CREA El Centro de Rescate, Estudio y Análisis Científico para el Arte surge para dar un soporte científico a la práctica de la conservación del patrimonio artístico y a la restauración de bienes culturales en Guatemala. CREA complementa su función con el apoyo a las actividades de la Fundación Rozas Botrán en materia de manejo y conservación de obras de arte.
ARTE EN LAS CALLES Fundación Rozas Botrán -en alianza con Paseo Cayalápresenta anualmente un Corredor Cultural en la ciudad de Guatemala. Durante cuatro semanas, el mobiliario urbano de publicidad iluminada exhibe una colección de diez pinturas, convirtiendo a la ciudad en una gran galería al aire libre. GALERÍA ROZAS BOTRÁN En el año 2012, La Fundación Rozas Botrán abrió sus puertas al público por medio de la Galería Rozas Botrán ubicada en la zona 14. Paralelamente, por medio de una alianza, instaló una extensión en Paseo Cayalá. Se han instituido para sumarse a los esfuerzos que la Fundación Rozas Botrán realiza en el campo de la salud. GALERÍA VIVA La Galería Viva es un concepto nuevo de la Fundación Rozas-Botrán, en colaboración con Paseo Cayalá, que promueve diferentes tipos de arte y diseño para atraer a una audiencia nueva al mundo del arte. La idea es que el arte, en vez de ser exclusivo, sea inclusivo y para todos. La galería se mantendrá “viva” y dinámica durante cada exhibición, usando el espacio como un estudio para los artistas y como un taller para la audiencia. GALERÍA ABIERTA Para reforzar la divulgación de las actividades culturales y artísticas en Paseo Cayalá, la Fundación Rozas Botrán ha iniciado un concepto innovador por medio de la intervención del espacio de la calle principal que se abre a la Gran Plaza de Cayalá. Los visitantes encontrarán información de las actividades que se desarrollan en el área, así como una reseña de los artistas que la Fundación presenta.

FOREWORD ART in MAY arrives once more to the National Museum of Modern Art. As it has done since its beginning in 1998, the Rozas BotrĂĄn Foundation presents this event in order to promote the arts in Guatemala. The whole process that culminates with this event, with its conceptual, administrative and financial activities, has a social objective: the fundraising for the San JosĂŠ Medical Campus institutions sponsored by the Rozas Botran Foundation that tend to those in most need of dignified medical attention. The activity comprises the care, communication and diffusion of contemporary visual art. A professional team of experts selects the works of art presented by hundreds of national and foreign artists who answer to the call. The demarche includes the exhibit design of the art pieces in the National Museum of Modern Art, a catalog and the publicity. Our goal is to promote a dialogue between the public and the arts, as well as to generate new spaces in order to strengthen the artistic and cultural growth of those involved. This event is achieved thanks to a solidarity bond established with the Western Financial Group (Grupo Financiero de Occidente). The funds secured through this alliance are invested in the solution of some of the health problems suffered by the vulnerable sectors of the Guatemalan population. ART in MAY is an inclusive event dedicated to art collectors and the general public in order to celebrate life and share this gift with our fellow neighbors. Jose Rozas BotrĂĄn

PRÓLOGO ARTE en MAYO llega una vez más al Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno. Como lo ha hecho desde su inicio en 1998, la Fundación Rozas Botrán presenta este evento para promover el arte en Guatemala. El proceso para llevarlo a cabo -a través de actividades conceptuales, administrativas y financieras- tiene un objetivo social: recaudar fondos para las instituciones del Campus Médico San José, tuteladas por la Fundación Rozas Botrán para dar una atención digna a los más necesitados. La actividad comprende el cuidado, la comunicación y la difusión del arte visual contemporáneo. Un equipo profesional selecciona las obras presentadas por cientos de artistas nacionales y extranjeros que acuden al llamado. La gestión incluye el diseño del montaje de las obras en el Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno, un catálogo y la publicidad. Nuestra meta es la promoción del diálogo entre el público y el arte, así como la generación de nuevos espacios para fortalecer el crecimiento artístico y cultural de las personas involucradas. Este evento se logra gracias a un vínculo de solidaridad establecido con el Grupo Financiero de Occidente. Por medio de esta alianza se gestionan fondos que se invierten en la solución de algunos problemas de salud que aquejan a sectores vulnerables de la población guatemalteca. Expression individuality and craft mastery For over a decade, Art in May has become an important exhibition and documentation opportunity for visual artists. It is an authentic framework for an unpretentious craft that reflects Guatemala’s artistic reality. In a diverse society in which its biggest asset is based precisely on a multiplicity of visions, contexts and expression forms, this exhibit grants value to the segment it serves, offering the meaningful documentation of its proposals. The presence of this exhibit -which has legitimized the expression of the people, consolidated careers, exalted national expression icons, opened spaces to new artists, and supported the creation of restless youngsters who place their work on trial- also constitutes a reference point for collectors, validating the collective and complementary exercise that takes place in the eager world of art. The arts constitute a vital instrument that reflects its context, as well as all the influences it is subject to. Therefore, a work of art should not be qualified as good or bad without considering its implicit value, such as the diverse world views that end in adequate or authentic proposals within society and the historic moment in which they appear. The organizing committee offers an exhibition consistent with professional and inclusive curatorial visions, respecting individuality expression and exalting the craft mastery, notwithstanding the conceptual understanding and academic rejection, opening spaces to expression offers. This is within a professional structure not far from the common taste with its reference of community. Once more, Art in May places Guatemalan creation before social judgment. All, in the search of support to meet the needs of less favored sectors by means of the sale of works of art, within a frame of community social commitment. JosÊ Mario Maza

Individualidad de expresión y dominio del oficio Por más de una década, la iniciativa de Arte en Mayo ha significado una ventana de exhibición y documentación en el quehacer plástico y visual del país. Es el marco auténtico de un oficio sin pretensiones que refleja un área de la realidad del país en atención a sus propuestas artísticas. En una sociedad diversa donde su mayor riqueza se basa precisamente en la multiplicidad de visiones, contextos y formas de expresión, esta colectiva constituye una puesta en valor del segmento que atiende, ofreciendo la tan importante documentación de las propuestas. La presencia de esta exposición -que ha ido legitimando la expresión de un pueblo, consolidando carreras, exaltando valores e íconos de la expresión nacional, abriendo espacios y apoyando la creación de jóvenes inquietos que ponen a juicio su trabajo- también es un referente al coleccionismo, validando el ejercicio colectivo y complementario en el afanoso mundo del arte. El arte conforma un documento significativo que refleja su contexto, así como las influencias a las que se encuentra sujeto. Por lo tanto, una apreciación del arte no debiera calificarse como buena o mala sin tomar en consideración los valores implícitos en ella, tales como las diversas cosmovisiones que concluyen en propuestas adecuadas o auténticas en su sociedad y en el momento histórico en que aparecen. La organización ofrece una muestra consecuente con visiones curatoriales profesionales e inclusivas, respetando la individualidad de expresión y exaltando el dominio del oficio, sin separar el entendimiento conceptual y rechazo académico, abriendo los espacios a las ofertas de expresión. Esto, dentro de la estructura profesional que no se aparta del gusto común con su referencia de comunidad. Una vez más, Arte en Mayo pone a juicio social la creación del oficio en la búsqueda del apoyo a sectores menos favorecidos por medio de la oferta de obras de arte, dentro de un marco de compromiso social comunitario. Art in May from the “view” of a scenic artist What would happen if we tried to listen to more than 150 musical pieces of different authors, one after another, all in the same evening? Even if each lasted only a couple of minutes, we would need five hours to listen to them all, and only once. Towards the end, we would not easily remember what we heard at the beginning. We would be left at mid-endeavor, however interesting or different they were, and supposing they were very brief. How different is the experience of visiting an exhibit like Art in May 2014. We are able to roam the National Museum of Art and find 150 works of visual art from diverse authors: a splurge of technical mastery and a generous production, virtues that have never failed Guatemalan visual arts in the past, even less since the Twentieth Century. Besides, as is the case of this exhibit, carefully hand-picked by a team of curators. Rozas Botrán Foundation knows where it stands and where it is going, not only by means of its management and social responsibility approaches, but by means of its aesthetic approach as well. Notwithstanding, some recurrent patterns are noticeable. Most works of art stand out because of their figurative features and their color palettes. Few, in neutral tones, highlight the classical technique of polychromy in other works of art. We are left with a sense of pursuit, even in the work of established authors with decades of experience who are looking to stay in the game. The risk that could be featured in a rupture or avant-garde art is yet to be seen; here, the idea is not to venture into the unknown. In general, the exhibition possesses a dream-like overtone, maybe as a permanent tactic of visual artists in these latitudes used in order to mitigate the effect of economic, politic, and social situations that envelop and threaten to suffocate us. Thus, instead of an inflammatory and provocative expression, the result is an art of introversion, of sub-consciousness, of yearning, always as a product of a prolonged reflection, even of deferment, while waiting for other possibilities. Thus, just as this collection could be considered from the “view” of a scenic artist, it is also susceptible to be considered with the “hearing” of a painter, or a sculptor, or of a photographer or an installation artist. It is worth mentioning that this Art in May seems like a meditative expedition by a group of artists and as an expedite meditation for a group of spectators. Paulo Alvarado

Arte en Mayo desde la “óptica” de un artista escénico ¿Qué sucedería si pretendiéramos escuchar más de 150 piezas de música de distintos autores, todas de corrido en una misma velada? Aunque cada una durara apenas un par de minutos, necesitaríamos cinco horas para escucharlas una sola vez y hacia el final no sería fácil recordar lo que hubiéramos oído al principio. Por interesantes y diferentes que fueran, nos quedaríamos a medias, siempre en el supuesto de que fueran obras muy breves. Cuán diferente viene a ser la vivencia de una muestra como este Arte en Mayo 2014. Recorreremos el Museo y encontraremos 150 obras de arte visual de diversos autores: un derroche de maestría técnica y una producción generosa, virtudes que nunca le han faltado a las artes visuales nacionales en el pasado y, menos aún, a partir del siglo XX. Además, en el caso de esta exposición, con una cuidadosa curaduría. La Fundación Rozas Botrán sabe sobre qué suelo se encuentra asentada y sabe hacia dónde se orienta, no sólo en lo administrativo y en su enfoque de responsabilidad social, sino en lo estético. Algunos patrones recurrentes, empero, sí se reconocen. Las obras se decantan, en su mayoría, por lo figurativo y lo colorido. Una que otra, en tonos neutros, no hace sino resaltar el recurso clásico de la policromía de las demás. Queda una sensación de búsqueda, aun en la obra de autores con décadas de trayectoria, quienes buscan mantenerse. No se vislumbra un sentido de riesgo que pudiera caracterizar a un arte de ruptura o de vanguardia; aquí la idea no es aventurarse a lo desconocido. Lo expuesto, en general, posee un sobre-tono onírico. Acaso una permanente táctica de los artistas visuales en estas latitudes para mitigar el efecto de las situaciones económicas, políticas y sociales que nos envuelven hasta amenazar con ahogarnos. De ese modo, en lugar de un comentario inflamatorio y provocador, el resultado es un arte de introversión, de subconsciencias, de añoranzas, siempre producto de una prolongada reflexión, inclusive de postergación, en espera de otras posibilidades. Así pues, del mismo modo que esta colección puede considerarse desde la “óptica” de un artista escénico, igualmente es susceptible de ser considerada con el “oído” de un pintor, o de una escultora, o de un fotógrafo, o de una instalacionista. Vale afirmar que este Arte en Mayo se antoja una expedición meditativa por parte de un conjunto de artistas -y también una meditación expedita para un conjunto de espectadores. Paulo Alvarado 9

ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Jorge Mazariegos Rodríguez Year after year, during the ART in MAY event, Rozas Botrán Foundation honors a visual artist whose career is outstanding due to its quality, constancy and consistency. Jorge Mazariegos Rodríguez has been selected this year because his work has become a benchmark for Guatemalan landscape and folklore painting. Jorge Mazariegos was born in San Marcos, Guatemala in 1944. He studied in the National School of Visual Arts in Guatemala City and in the San Fernando and Artium academies in Madrid, Spain. He took courses in Guatemalan folklore and monument conservation in the San Carlos University of Guatemala. He studied pedagogy and psychology in the Rafael Landívar University and took courses of children’s literature in the Hispanic Culture Center in Madrid. He obtained the title of Visual Arts Professor in the Mariano Gálvez University of Guatemala. As a docent, he has worked in various private schools and in the Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala. During more than 50 years he has used crayons, pencils, oil and acrylic paint, as well as watercolors to highlight the most important features of Guatemalan natural heritage. Along landscapes, appear the cultural aspects that distinguish the population of diverse regions of the country, especially the traits and symbols of the indigenous highlands. Mazariegos has had individual and group exhibits in El Salvador, Mexico, the United States of America, Spain, Japan, and Guatemala among other countries. He has received awards from the Arturo Martínez Contest, from the Central American Brewery, from the Shell Guatemala Contest and from the Paiz Central American Art Biennial Contest. His work is found in the collections of the Spanish Royal Residence, the Vatican, and the White House of the United States. His human quality, professionalism and devotion to the arts have motivated numerous acknowledgements and awards. Thelma Castillo 10

ARTISTA DEL AÑO: Jorge Mazariegos Rodríguez Año con año, durante ARTE en MAYO, la Fundación Rozas Botrán rinde homenaje a un artista visual cuya trayectoria ha destacado por su calidad, constancia y consistencia. Jorge Mazariegos Rodríguez ha sido seleccionado en esta oportunidad porque su obra se ha convertido en un punto de referencia para la pintura del paisaje y el folklore guatemaltecos. Jorge Mazariegos nació en San Marcos, Guatemala, en 1944. Estudió en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de Guatemala y en las academias de San Fernando y Artium, en Madrid, España. Asistió a cursos de folklore guatemalteco y conservación de monumentos en la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. Realizó estudios de pedagogía y psicología en la Universidad Rafael Landívar. Tomó cursos de literatura infantil en el Centro de Cultura Hispánica de Madrid y en la Universidad Mariano Gálvez de Guatemala obtuvo el título de Profesor de Artes Plásticas. Como docente, se ha desempeñado en varios colegios e institutos y en la Universidad Rafael Landívar de Guatemala. Durante más de 50 años, Mazariegos ha empleado crayones, lápices, óleos, acrílicos, tintas y acuarelas para destacar las características más importantes del patrimonio natural de Guatemala. A la par del paisaje, aparecen los aspectos culturales que distinguen a los habitantes de las diversas regiones del país, particularmente los rasgos y símbolos del altiplano indígena. Mazariegos ha realizado exposiciones individuales y colectivas en El Salvador, México, Estados Unidos, España, Japón y Guatemala, entre otros países. Ha recibido los premios del Certamen Arturo Martínez, de la Cervecería Centroamericana, del Concurso Shell de Guatemala y de la Bienal Centroamericana de Arte Paiz. Sus obras han llegado a las colecciones de la Residencia Real de los Reyes de España, el Vaticano y la Casa Blanca de Estados Unidos.
