MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD We are very excited to present our first annual report as a Non Profit Organization. After a decade of collective work and failed attempts at formalization, today we have proven to ourselves the value of keeping our internal flame burning despite the circumstances.

Perhaps it is the circumstances themselves that invite us not to give up. Realizing that we are in a moment in civilization where the standard of a dignified life is so low that we have normalized considering access to the most basic human rights as a privilege.

In other words, neither society nor communities are guaranteeing people the minimum conditions necessary to go through our life cycles free from structural violence.

Specifically, women are inserted into a world created by and for male needs.

In an era where women are beginning to reclaim rights denied for centuries, we understand where society places our value. What is the collective imagination of an empowered woman? In general, it is someone who has conquered social positions like those of a man without losing the attributes of the maiden archetype that everyone wants to court.

But when women decide to become mothers, society sends us back to the last wagon. As if a requirement of motherhood were the renunciation of freedom. Faced with a pregnant woman, the system feels entitled to make decisions for her, and this is entirely normalized in our society. The infantilization and invisibilization of women entering motherhood are common in families, jobs, and other institutions.

But in the innermost being of every woman who becomes a mother, an unstoppable power is also gestating that we must preserve and nurture. A mother, more than an empowered woman, becomes a powerful woman capable of contributing to the world the seed of change that we all need, as long as her space-time is guaranteed to recognize and awaken that power from the moment of childbirth.

Hence the urgency of positioning Matractivism as the permanent source from which our impulse to do things flows, both the everyday and the extraordinary.

Being Matractive for us means transcending our individuality for the sake of the common good, placing self-care and mutual care at the center.

More than state institutions, it is the community taking care of itself. And this fine social fabric is learned to a large extent through the act of mothering in love, peace, and harmony.

Matractivism is not a formula already written; it is a process under construction. It is the voice of women who recognize their power in decisionmaking based on full autonomy. In a systematically patriarchal society, it becomes complex to unravel even one's own needs and desires. Being Matriactive is performing daily exercises of congruence to recalibrate my bodily sensations with my thoughts, feelings, and words.

Over the years, we have realized that this task becomes impossible for our mothering/fathering processes, because they are locked within the solitude of the nuclear families, which are so harmful and normalized at the same time. Mothers develop the need to rebuild their “tribes” with whom they share spaces of reflection, self-care, and sisterhood that embrace and feed their power to nurture and create the world they desire.

This has been the task of the Osa Mayor Foundation for over ten years, and now we want our message to resonate in every corner because we are convinced that the healing of motherhood lies in the healing of the entire world.

THE BIRTH OF THE OSA MAYOR FOUNDATION

OUR MOVEMENT OSA MAYOR was born in 2014 as a center for female empowerment and healing. Since then, we have conducted workshops for over 70 midwives, women, and their families; attended more than 480 births, and provided care to over 1,440 families in the Tulum community and its surroundings.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS In Health, we have consolidated our home birth services and provided guidance to both midwives and the government for the legalization of birthing centers in Mexico.

In Education, we have solidified the Essential Midwifery Competency Certification program and initiated the online educational process "Midwife School."

In the Community sector, we acquired 100 hectares of jungle to start our community project involving initially 20 families.

LEGAL CONSOLIDATION At the end of 2022, we formalized our organization as a Non Profit Organization to have the formal presence necessary for the movement's expansion.

CHRONOLOGY OF THE OSA MAYOR 2014-2023

Birth of Osa Mayor in Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Tulum as a traditional midwifery school and birthing center. The center in Tulum focused on female empowerment and healing, and the idea of the Womb Space was born. In both centers, we had 7 midwifery apprentices.

The Osa Mayor Traditional Midwiferty School is created with its curriculum, and 4 retreats are held to introduce matriactivist and midwifery ideas to 36 participants.

We created and implemented Intercultural Doula Diploma at Intercultural Maya University Quintana Roo (UIMQROO).

We organized the first specifically matriactivist demonstration in Tulum, giving rise to a slogan and a fan page with over 3,000 followers, "My Birth, My Decision," now used in Latin American matriactivism.

COFEPRIS closes our Tulum birthing center due to a lack of widespread midwifery regulation in the country.

We promoted the initiative to establish a Standard for Essential Midwifery Competencies nationwide.

TRANSVERSAL THEME: ADVOCACY Advocacy is a transversal theme and involves defending our community. Advocating is making use of our rights to democracy, freedom, reproductive justice and autonomy based on our experience as mothers and as midwives.

HOW DO WE DO IT? OUR MODEL OF INTERVENTION We intervene using a model of empowerment for women, consisting of four phases where each line of action complements itself:

Women come to seek support at the Womb Space of Osa Mayor because a trigger has occurred. Triggers can range from obstetric violence, abuse, family violence, poverty, or healthcare systems that do not meet their needs.

Women receive practical, tangible, moral support, emotional containment, and mentoring in the various areas of Osa Mayor's attention. The first area we work on is HEALTH. Women receive comprehensive care based on alternative medicine for their empowerment: herbalism, homeopathy, yoga, sweat lodges, red tents, and non-conforming childbirth.

Osa Mayor stimulates empowerment through awareness of social and political issues regarding gender powerlessness and its implications. The Osa Mayor program educates women through the EDUCATION axis so that they can develop healthy emotional relationships and a matriactivist consciousness that empowers their motherhood.

Empowerment manifests and anchors in collective participation, reducing social isolation. The COMMUNITY program expands the network of sisterhood among women who seek to nurture and create a healthy social fabric for life and future generations. The nature of collaboration is to give and receive within a community of women who are already supporting each other in empowering other women.

INTEGRAL HEALTHCARE FOR MOTHERS

We have contributed to providing accessibility to dignified and respected childbirth care for women in economic vulnerability, migrants, and women from Mayan communities. The care provided is based on an empowerment model, so they find a support network within the Osa Mayor Foundation that allows them to break the cycles of gender-based violence and social isolation that mothers experience during childbirth.

We have an impact in Tulum and its surroundings, in areas with high rates of violence against women, particularly those experiencing economic violence: Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Mahahual.

This year, 495 support services were provided, including childbirth assistance, prenatal consultations, postnatal consultations, Mayan massages, childbirth preparation courses, and postpartum baths and closures, with the participation of 3 midwives.

EDUCATION

FORMING AUTONOMOUS THINKERS

This year, we carried out various actions that contributed to empowering motherhood through midwifery-related courses and awareness activities targeted at mothers and their families to trigger a matriactivist consciousness. We achieved a growth rate of 18% in the number of people who underwent some form of online and in-person midwifery training. The actions we conducted are as follows:

Midwifery School We launched our Midwifery School, being the first platform to offer midwifery training courses in Latin America through an application that facilitates access from mobile devices. The platform provides maximum flexibility to adapt to the reality and particular needs of each apprentice, promoting autonomous knowledge and driving the development of Latin American midwifery.

Its purpose is to guide theoretically towards the certification of essential midwifery competencies and ensure quality training for the care of pregnant women with a holistic perspective and respectful care based on the traditional model of mentor to apprentice.

In the middle of the year, we completed the first course of the curriculum "Free Births, birthing in autonomy," which allows participants to delve into the world of midwifery, learn about history, legal frameworks, autonomous regulation of midwifery, among other highly relevant topics that provide a general overview of the practice of midwifery in Latin America and the learning model of the Midwifery School

During the Respectful Birth Week, we published a free course "Planting Autonomy," which discusses cases of autonomous regulation in Mexico, Argentina, and Costa Rica, showing the socio-political context that midwives experience in these countries.

As a result, 7 apprentices and 1 experienced midwife were impacted: Online course "Free Births: birthing in autonomy": 5 apprentices.

A practical guide to becoming certified as a midwife On the Midwifery School platform, we offered a free course on the importance of certification in essential midwifery competencies. The course addresses and raises awareness about Latin American midwifery as a movement to exercise their rights and impact more women to access dignified and respected childbirths. It aims to strengthen midwifery as an autonomous profession, encourages participation in public policies and advocacy processes, and invites them to generate knowledge as mentorapprentices, promoting educational and professionalization processes, among other topics.

Digital awareness We have participated in and carried out communicative, digital, and academic awareness actions to promote the values of matriactivism. We provide information about the role of midwives as guardians of maternity, sexual and reproductive rights of women, obstetric violence, the physiological needs of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, subversive motherhood, among other topics with the aim of highlighting the challenges that mothers face before, during, and after childbirth. We participated in:

8 interviews with various digital and television media to discuss the work of the Osa Mayor Foundation and topics related to matriactivism, midwifery, subversive motherhood, and absent fatherhood. One of these interviews was organized with one of the beneficiary moms who was assisted by the Osa Mayor Foundation, and it was broadcast on the organization's Instagram with the theme "Raising the Voice! Motherhood and Obstetric Violence."

In addition, two live sessions were conducted: "The Importance of Immediate Attachment," where we discussed the right, need, and respect for mothers to create an immediate bond between the mother and the baby at the moment of birth.

"Fear," where we discussed fear from the perspective of autonomous midwives and mothers at the time of childbirth, recognizing and transforming the fear that we may feel.

Conferencias, cursos y talleres Also, we have participated in conferences, courses, and workshops: Participation in the "Birth in Motion" Forum in March for awareness prior to the activities of March 8. It was a weekend of conferences and workshops in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, where the Osa Mayor Foundation participated with the topic "Creating and Nurturing Matriactivism."

A midwife from the Osa Mayor Foundation participated in June 2023 in the First International Congress of Traditional Medicine organized by the Intercultural Maya University of Quintana Roo with the lecture "Traditional Midwifery: how it was formed, its teaching experience at UIMQROO, its legislation, and certification in an online midwifery school," impacting a total of 60 participants.

The Professional Midwifery School of Guadalajara invited the anthropologist from the Osa Mayor Foundation to provide the Socioanthropology course to its students in the second semester of 2023, which is provided voluntarily, impacting 6 students.

Comunidad digital We initiated a construction and awareness project in the digital community in the following areas: education, information, donations, and podcasts. This was carried out through organic awareness campaigns on Facebook and Instagram, as well as interviews promoting the project. It is worth noting that at the end of November, the podcast project was launched, which has been well-received among mothers from different regions. The first podcast was released in December (in connection with November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) on various platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, featuring the topic "Sexuality, Abuse, and Transcendence," with the participation of mothers collaborating in the Foundation and midwives.

On Facebook, we have seen an acceptance from 2,933 people in comparison to the same period before. Of this, 91.7% are adult women, with a majority between 25 to 44 years old.

On Instagram, there has been an acceptance from 6,404 people, of which 92% are adult women, with a majority between 25 to 44 years old.

Regarding the podcast "25N: Sexuality, Abuse, and Transcendence," details are pending. There has been an acceptance from 444 people, off this, are adult women between 28 to 34 years old and 35 to 44 years old.

BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

Certified midwives’ network One of the projects generated and sustained by the Osa Mayor Foundation is the certification process in essential midwifery competencies. All midwives who undergo this process become part of the Certified Midwives Network, which is present in various states in Mexico and even in Guatemala and the border region of the United States of North America. Once midwives complete the certification process, it is confirmed that they align with a code of ethics and conduct containing the values, approach, and vision promoted by the Foundation, as well as the stance of matriactivism that we advocate for.

All certified midwives are autonomous and not dependent on the Foundation.

However, they have contributed to creating safe spaces for women and their births in their territories, actively participating in the Network, and inviting more midwives to undergo the examination.

Womb space Women who have participated within the empowerment model participate in the healing activities provided by the Osa Mayor Foundation, incorporating traditional medicine techniques and pre-Hispanic rituals from Mexico.

Through Temazcales and the Red Tent, women learn about their rights, deepen their understanding of power and autonomy, and are inspired to take actions to rebuild social fabric with other mothers in their own territories.

Additionally, these mothers have created a digital community where they share concerns, questions, recommendations about subversive motherhood, healing, and provide support to eliminate social isolation and gender-based violence that women experience after giving birth.

2 women's circles: On June 3, 2023, a women's circle in the Temazcal at the Foundation's facility in Tulum.

1 WhatsApp group "Mamás Osa Mayor" with 421 mothers, showing a 27% increase this year. In this group, mothers exchange concerns, suggestions, recommendations, weave support networks and sisterhood, and share information related to subversive motherhood.

Towards the Construction of the Womb Space in Felipe Carrillo Puerto This year, we received a loan for 1,000,000.00 Mexican pesos for the downpayment of a 100-hectare plot in virgin jungle, in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, where we will build the "Womb Space" project.

The Womb Space is a project based on social transformation through life in a matriactivist community, led by two mothers, a midwife, and an anthropologist. Essentially, the "Womb Space" project aspires to create a harmonious intercultural community guided by maternal principles of nurturing and creating life. This innovative concept of life is based on the values of love, freedom, peace, and respect for the rhythms of life, fostering compassion for creativity and spirit. The Clan Houses, the heart of this Womb Space, form a unique architectural expression that embodies these maternal ideals. Here, we encourage sustainable coexistence with nature, engage in knowledge exchange with neighboring Mayan communities, and ensure the preservation of wildlife, water, and forest reserves for future generations. This visionary project represents the transformative power of community, where each member has equal rights, and where abundance, not competition, is the economic cornerstone.

Theme: Health On February 9, we participated in a dialogue table among collectives and midwifery organizations convened by the Ministry of Health (CNEGySR) to serve as consultants in the process of drafting the draft Official Mexican Standard PROY-NOM-XXX-SSA-2023 for the practice of traditional, community, and professional midwifery. The worktables were not activated, and there were subsequent resignations of officials. We have been informed that the initiative will be reactivated in 2024.

RELEASE

On July 28, we participated in a meeting with the head of the Ministry of Health's Subsecretariat as part of the National Midwifery Council (CoNParto), consisting of five members from three organizations serving as intermediaries with decision-makers of the federal government in constructing the critical path for autonomous midwifery in Mexico. The goal is to implement actions for the integration of the midwifery model into health services as an autonomous discipline.

Theme: Education On March 27, we had a meeting with 17 public and private organizations dedicated to midwifery education to present ourselves to the General Directorate of Quality and Education in Health as a technical team of experts in the construction of the first Evaluation Guide based on the midwifery model as an autonomous disciplinary field.

From April to August 2023, 32 working meetings were held within the CoNParto group to create the "Guide to essential criteria for evaluating plans and programs of the midwifery degree."

Additionally, 22 meetings were held with the General Directorate of Quality and Education in Health to construct the "Guide to essential criteria for evaluating plans and programs of the midwifery degree" based on the consensus established in the internal meetings of the CoNParto group. .

Theme: Community We have woven support networks among mothers and connected with other civil society organizations, contributing in various areas. We have established links with ALAPAR, ASOPARUPA, and the global midwifery movement, bringing the perspective of matriactivism in particular. We also contribute to issues that impact us, such as environmentalism, traditional and holistic medicine, and building support networks to address violence in our territories.

Following the announcement of the draft Official Mexican Standard PROYNOM-XXX-SSA-2023, for the practice of traditional, community, and professional midwifery, and criteria for the regulation of labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, we made a public demand by publishing a manifesto, along with other midwifery organizations, birthing centers, and educational institutions, urging the consideration of midwives' voices in official matters that directly affect them.

Seventeen midwifery education institutions, both public and private, participated in the call made to the General Directorate of Quality and Education in Health to reform the "Guide to essential criteria for evaluating plans and programs of the midwifery degree."

Out of these 17 institutions, most noted the overwhelming effort required to build a project from scratch, and the majority decided to abandon the mission, leaving only six representatives from four civil society organizations: Escuela de Partería Profesional de Guadalajara, CASA de San Miguel de Allende, Cruz Roja de Cuernavaca, and Fundación Osa Mayor through the Escuela de Parteras.

We formed a working group that collaborated with the DGCES to construct the aforementioned guide. We named the group CoNParto (National Midwifery Council) to become a political force and present ourselves to various health system agencies. Our intention is to reverse and prevent decisions that adversely affect midwives and reproductive-age women in public health. Although the guide has already been finalized, we continue working together, representing midwives from the states of Jalisco, Guanajuato, Baja California, Morelos, and Quintana Roo, ready to prevent the announced NOM from further violating midwives' and women's rights, using our expertise to bring about positive change in reproductive autonomy.

In my experience of giving birth at home and in water, I have been accompanied by Sabrina and not only during the childbirth, but also support and recommendations before and after the childbirth. It is difficult for me to find words of gratitude towards this great woman. The truth is, my story was a little difficult, we live quite far from Tulum, there isn´t midwife in my town, we also had to be there before the birth, but I wanted to be at home, to be in the nest for the arrival of my Sunshine. Well, through all of this Sabrina has been very supportive of me. He gave me a lot of strength during my childbirth and answered all my questions. I’m infinitely grateful for all the support and accompaniment in the arrival of the being that illuminates my life. I see Sabrina more than my midwife, she is my friend, teacher and sister who was with me in the most sacred moment of my life.

THANK YOU As the founder of this beautiful project called Osa Mayor I need to extend my gratitude ! It cannot be said enough really. All my life I have been supported by loving people who believe in my dreams.

Osa Mayor was dreamt of many years before its consolidation. In 1995 I gave birth to my first daughter Dshamilja. It was a spiritual awakening, I realized my connection to the cosmos, mother earth, women, all beings on this planet. I would dedicate my life to them all and our love and unity.

The mothering force needed to be awakened on this planet. All the subsequent years went into journeying this vision into reality. This journey would take me to the other side of the planet, make me become a midwife and connect with like minded people.

It wasn't an easy journey. Many times I faced headships in my life as a mother.

Then in 2012, the year of the dragon, I met Nancy, my partner on this journey of making this idea become a reality. Nancy also became a mother and faced her amount of troubles on the way. But never did we let our dreams go. Even in the darkest moments we believed that one day this would happen.

From the beginning of this journey, Fondo Semillas, was a strategic piece in making it all possible. Somewhere, far away from us, a group of amazing women believed in our work. Wow this was and still is so empowering to reflect on.

Semillas, as an organization have literally sowed the seeds of our foundations.

We are still at the beginning, we know, but I feel like we are sprouting soon. Once this happens and we are able to deal with the upcoming storms, then nothing will be able to stop us.

We are so thankful for all those women and men that have believed in us. I want to send a shout out to Steffi Guenther who is sowing the seeds for the 100 hectare community programme we are starting. Also to all the mothers of Tulum, we were able to support them through their pregnancies and are giving us the moral strength to carry on.

Also I would like to thank all the small businesses and individuals that have helped us to become more expert and wise in our work. I would also like to thank 2023, which has brought an amazing team of women together, so we can co create amazing things.

These women, even though they were paid for their work, they have given much more towards this project. This extra work is so needed by our Foundation.

We need everyone to share this dream, this dream of a better world, where mothers and their families can exponentially give the best to their children and their environment. My words cannot express the gratitude I am feeling.

I know all and every human who invests in supporting others and being compassionate in all their ways, will make their life more worthwhile.

Hopefully we can enter this 2024 together, the year of the Dragon, a 12 year cycle of the Osa Mayor and create wonderful things for childbirth, for new social constructs, for ecological community living and for humanity and nature as a whole.
