Our Annual Report 2021 Strengthening our community network

Fundación Calicanto is an organization focused on protecting communities through training efforts, development, and conservation of human heritage. Our programs provide human, social, and psychological development tools in addition to technical training that allows comprehensive development and promote the economic autonomy of the most socially and economically vulnerable populations in Panama.

On September 25th, 2015, countries adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Our programs support the direct advancement of three of the Sustainable Development Goals which are closely related to Goal 1: No Poverty.

IMPLEMENTATION AND RESULTS FOR THE

STRENGTHENING OF HUMAN VALUE The term social capital is not new, but its value is increasing. Put simply, social capital is the value that is generated from the positive interaction of people. From its beginnings, Fundación Calicanto has placed human and social capital at the center of the design of its programs considering the different relations and interactions that efficiently and effectively promote its mission. This report presents the various forms of support that Fundación Calicanto provides to the communities,

in order to turn the mission into positive results for the women and families of Panama. In that sense, we work closely with a wide variety of partners to strengthen the human value and generate social capital. In Panama, empowered women are making visible progress, and we recognize the power of positive examples; how vital it is for the children to see that the achievements of their mothers and fathers

are attainable through education and access to further training. In early 2021, we continue to support more women through the job training program (known by its Spanish acronym CAPTA) to recognize their economic autonomy by sharing tools that help them acknowledge their personal and vocational skills and identify economic opportunities. We also collaborate with bilateral support organizations on special projects that fostered positive interaction between the beneficiaries and civil society. There are individual stories that illustrate the benefits of the comprehensive and sustained training in our programs, such as that of our graduate and representative, Meybis Acosta, who was invited to the international presentation "The path to women's empowerment" organized by UN Women, in conjunction with the embassies of France and Mexico. In total, we trained 118 women, and provided support and mentoring to more than 400 women in our network of beneficiaries. A life free of violence is the fundamental axis for these opportunities to be maintained over time. In 2021, we consolidated our Agentes de Cambio (Agents of Change) program for violence prevention, empowering 15 agents and impacting and educating more than 200 adolescents. Adopting the motto of the Agenda 2030 "Leaving no one behind", we also explored male empowerment by training for the first time 30 men belonging to the comprehensive program of community development "Mejorando Mi Comunidad" (Improving my Community) of the Foundation Sus Buenos Vecinos. This report highlights the palpable urgency that exists to further accelerate education and economic access for women and their families. Together with our partners, Fundación Calicanto will continue to support women, seeking to generate social capital, whose impact benefits the development of many communities and productive sectors in Panama.

WE DIVERSIFY GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES Sustainable development commitments establish the interconnection that exists between the various objectives. In this sense, our programs work under a comprehensive development model in which one program drives the other, which provides a more sustainable capacity development over time. In principle, our development model recognizes that emotional barriers and psychological trauma are some of the biggest obstacles faced by the most vulnerable populations. Through our CAPTA program, we provide psychosocial and vocational tools that allow these populations to discover their potential, know their rights, and have access to better opportunities. The Connections program leverages this initial empowerment by increasing economic access opportunities considering three axes: continuing education, job placement, and entrepreneurship.

In Panama and the world, women work under unequal conditions, which puts their rights and those of their children at risk. Our development model seeks to mitigate these risks by empowering and placing women at the center of the development of their contexts and communities.

4

OUR DEVELOPMENT MODEL Once people recognize their individual rights and duties, it is time to promote those capacities and strengthen their communities. The program "Agentes de Cambio" (Agents of Change) is the highest development level that a beneficiary of the foundation can access. Promoted through the network

of 350 active graduates, we take advantage of the personal and professional experience of the graduates, providing them with a space to promote social changes in people in their communities through awareness workshops on equal rights and equity.

FOR LIFE | CAPTA "The global goals depend on the full participation and leadership of women in all spheres of life". The CAPTA program helps them gain skills to improve their own well-being through psychosocial empowerment and the identification of economic opportunities. Through the development of various topics such as emotional intelligence, resilience, effective communication, leadership, and vocational skills. digital entrepreneurship and digital marketing, in 2021, the program helped 118 women who had the urgency to start or revive their informal entrepreneurship to counteract the substantial job losses and learn new vocational skills and learn to confront the personal, family, and social challenges evident in their context.

STRENGTHENING THE NETWORK TOWARDS

ECONOMIC AUTONOMY | CONEXIONES The Connections Program is a space that supports the learning of the CAPTA course and supports the graduates in the development of their skills in order to see them achieve economic autonomy. During six months post CAPTA, the program provides personal follow-up and guidance, providing them special psychological attention, vocational guidance, personal and vocational growth workshops, and recreational activities that link them with other Foundation graduates. The program promotes empowerment through the cultural and social connection of the graduates, and the evaluative follow-up facilitates the understanding of the graduates' trajectory and the long-term impact of the CAPTA course. In 2021, we provided follow-up to 79 graduates and supported 290 graduates. Dana Acuña is 45 years old, she is originally from Nicaragua and graduated CAPTA in 2017. Dana's career evokes the Foundation's objectives, which seek to improve lives and achieve economic growth for the beneficiaries by obtaining a stable income. "My experience in the CAPTA program was huge, it made me grow as a human being, it made me a stronger woman, it made me value myself as a person and fight to achieve the things I want. I have been working for the Natural Eco Clean company for 2 years and 3 months. When I started I was part of a group of operators, but with perseverance and good performance, I was promoted to operator leader. Now I am in charge of 13 operators that I 12

manage within DHL. It hasn't been easy, but little by little I've made progress. There were downturns but I kept going and I feel happy as I know I will achieve more. I encourage all women to fight for their dreams. Always be positive and believe in yourself. My life has changed since I took the Fundación Calicanto course. Many doors opened for me."

BETTING ON VIOLENCE PREVENTION

AGENTS OF CHANGE Agentes de Cambio (Agents of Change) is a community-level program, promoted through the network of 350 active CAPTA graduates, that seeks to take advantage of the personal and professional experience of graduates by providing them with a space to promote social changes in women and adolescents in their communities through virtual workshops to raise awareness about the prevention of gender violence, equal rights, civic culture, and equity. In 2021, together with the Embassy of France, we trained 15 graduates who impacted 209 teenagers in their communities by conducting awareness workshops on the prevention of gender violence, so that each one could take the tools and knowledge to mitigate the risks within their own contexts.

ELENA ROMERO "I was able to help many young people face reality, shed their fears, and say 'No more violence.' Elena Romero is 40 years old, she is Panamanian and a CAPTA graduate. Elena's profile and skills as a community leader, counselor, and family counselor allowed her to develop and train as an Agent of change for the prevention of gender violence. "I was invited as a graduate to be part of the Agents of Change project and actually, I did not have much time but I wanted to continue learning, so I accepted the invitation. I was able to help many young people face reality, shed their fears, and say "No more violence". Thanks to the training, my perception of the mistreatment towards women changed since I was able to learn a lot about the profile of

an abuser, and how to train young people to recognize and be alert to possible cases of abuse. Thanks to the Agents of Change program, today I feel like a more useful person for my community. It was an honor to have been invited to the conversation with the Ambassador of France since he called us "colleagues" and that had a great impact on me."

AMPLIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OTHER

POPULATIONS| CAPTA FOR MEN The Foundation is committed to a coordinated approach to achieving gender equality. Although there is still a long way to go for women and girls to achieve many of the rights granted to men today, we highlight the importance of working on male empowerment as a comprehensive way to reduce the gaps in individual, family, and social understanding of populations at risk. Thanks to the Sus Buenos Vecinos Foundation's project "Mejorando mi Comunidad" (Improving My Community), the opportunity arises to adapt the CAPTA Program and benefit men in situations of social vulnerability in Ciudad Radial and Concepción in the Juan Díaz township. These strategic alliances foster innovation and the exchange of solutions between both organizations, which in turn strengthens the comprehensive development of the communities.

Graduates of the first CAPTA for Men class receive equipment and seed capital to continue advancing their projects.

16

This initial project has revealed the validity of the concepts, methodology, and adaptations of the CAPTA Program. It has shown that CAPTA is applicable and relevant and that it can address a wide range of community challenges within the framework of sustainable development. Similar to the courses for women, men were more motivated to participate in order to improve their enterprises. At the end of the virtual course, meeting space was organized for all the graduates (photos) in which they could meet in person, and share their experiences and expectations for the future.

LUIS PORTOCARREO "CAPTA helped me a lot because it taught me essential things about entrepreneurship in order to obtain better results in my business." Luis Portocarreo is 20 years old, he is Panamanian and graduate od the first CAPTA class for men. As a student and entrepreneur, Luis signed up for the course in search of access to learning opportunities about entrepreneurship. But the program also taught him to identify solutions to the personal challenges to which he is exposed in his environment. "CAPTA helped me a lot because it taught me essential things about entrepreneurship in order to obtain better results in my business. I am a student, commited son, father of two dogs, and entrepreneur. I always wanted to start my business and I was able to do it when I was only 19 years old. I am dedicated to barbering and thanks to the course I learned to control my temper, listen to others,

get the most out of my work area, and always giving the best of me. I consider that I contribute to the wellbeing of my community by forging a job that I myself created, and being a positive example for my family and society. I wish that as a society we are more supportive and that the desire to excel leads us to achieve our dreams."

FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE

" Our programs provide the complete cycle. We cannot speak of

empowered women if they do not have their own resources. CAPTA is the program that gives them the opportunity to get and keep a formal job. On the other hand, Agents of Change are women who know what their communities need and are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to impact people for possible positive change. If we empower more people we can take a big step in reducing inequalities but we need the message to reach schools, companies, organizations and a greater support from the State to generate a truly significant impact in communities.

"

Hildegard Vásquez President

" In 2021 we have consolidated each program to the virtual format. A

great advance that has allowed us to reach women from all over the country. We have ventured into training through digital platforms to train mentors and support MEDUCA through radio and television, bringing music therapy to the teaching and student population through the project "Conectando con La Estrella"(Connecting with The Star). Furthermore, today we have a team adapted to new ways of working but that has not lost its essence despite the distance. The greatest of the challenges and achievements has been to enter a CAPTA Program for men who have also been trained for their personal and professional growth, which has allowed us to impact more families in a comprehensive manner.

OUR PARTNER NETWORK The impact and scope of the programs depend on various alliances with public institutions, the private sector, and civil society that help us accelerate progress towards a less unequal Panama. In 2021, we had the opportunity to receive support from several allies who committed their resources to the implementation of the programs and the achievement of the objectives. Even more importantly, it is important to highlight that from their positions, these partners constitute an important voice in raising awareness about gender equality and the empowerment of the most vulnerable people. Thank you for investing in the rights and interests of the women, men, and families we have trained this year. We recognize the responsibility of the Foundation to represent your interests to continue contributing to the sustainable development of the communities of Panama.

Where Are We Going? Our digital expansion project continues to advance. More than 200 beneficiaries are today part of virtual CAPTA. We have validated the virtual methodology by training more than 200 people in the last 12 months, of which 85% have raised or sustained their levels of self-esteem and 97% have been positively evaluated in the advancement of the development of their emotional, social and entrepreneurial capacities. In order to rebuild education paths and promote economic autonomy for more people, we seek to strengthen our methodology through a virtual training platform focused on the integration of entrepreneurship and digital training. The project will have various modules that can be accessed individually or under the comprehensive 7-week model. It is an innovative project that will allow access to more people by automating the current CAPTA content according to the needs of people considering the current educational context.
