Dear FUMC Bell Ringers, I want to thank you all for taking the time to ring bells this year for the Salvation Army. I am always proud to see our congregation’s participation in this amazing Christian ministry. For roughly 10 years, I have been coordinating our church’s involvement, and it has been a truly rewarding experience. I have loved watching our members and their families get involved. From those who have made it a tradition to those who began this year, I appreciate everyone who has helped over the years. Though it has been a wonderful experience, I am handing the baton to Tyson Raper. I know that he will do a great job, and we will continue to help the Salvation Army with their mission. Thanks for all the great years! Best Wishes, Mark Johnstone

Member Spotlight: Wanda and Pat Scanlon

sold it in 2009. Looking for a new opportunity, he became a probation officer for the state of Tennessee.

Their journey together began 38 years ago. This is their story of love, faith, FUMC and more!

As newlyweds, Pat and Wanda were anxious to find a church home. With Pat being a lifelong Episcopalian, they first decided to visit an Episcopal church. One wintry, cold Sunday morning they drove downtown to attend a worship service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. They parked their car between First United Methodist Church (FUMC) and St. Luke’s. Following the service, they returned to their car only to find they were stuck in the ice. Several men came over from the FUMC parking lot and pushed them out where they could eventually make their way home. “Those men were so nice and helpful” that Pat and Wanda decided they would visit FUMC the next Sunday. Rev. Jack Henton preached and a few months later, the Scanlons joined the church…God, does work in amazing ways!

How they met… Pat was transferred to Jackson and looking for an apartment. Wanda’s mother had sold his boss a home so Pat stopped by that Real Estate office to see if she could help him find a place to rent. Noting his politeness, good looks and personality, she mentioned she had a single daughter who also had just moved back to Jackson and she’d like for him to meet her. They had a blind date at Village Inn Pizza Parlor and six months later, they married! A little bit about Wanda At age three, Wanda moved from Peoria, IL to Jackson, TN. The daughter of a contractor, her family moved all over North Jackson. She attended Jackson city schools through the 9th grade and says she knows almost everyone her age in Jackson! She and her family attended Northside United Methodist Church where her parents were charter members. Wanda graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis and worked off and on as an RN in surgery while helping husband, Pat and raising their three children: Laura Lee, and twins, Edward and William. Wanda works part-time at Regional hospital as a surgical nurse. A little bit about Pat Pat was born in Jackson, MS and was raised in Natchez, MS, a town he loves and where he continues to enjoy close ties. He attended schools there until high school when his family moved several times including living in Vicksburg, MS and Walstead, KS. He graduated from Prep School at Sewanee Military Academy and then attended Ole Miss where he graduated with a degree in business and accounting. He began working in management for Roadway Express, moving 4 times in 2 years with his last transfer in 1979 being Jackson, TN. In 1980, Pat started a new business, Jackson Moving, a company he owned until he

How the Scanlons discovered Jackson FUMC

Their journey… Pat and Wanda have blessed this church in so many ways! Pat was encouraged to be an usher early on, a responsibility he faithfully carries out today as an usher coordinator along with Robert Hopper for the 11 a.m. service. One of his fondest memories and friendship was with Jimmy Doak, (husband of Dorothy Doak) who was head usher for many years until his death. Pat also coached children’s and youth basketball teams. It was through sports that he met many people. Wanda has been a Sunday School teacher for children and adults over several years. She and Pat are founding members of Upper Room Sunday School class for which she continues as a leader. She explained that the class got its name 35 years ago mainly because it was located in a small room (now demolished) above the sanctuary. Their Sunday School class has meant so much to them through the years. While no longer a small class nor in that same location, Upper Room located on the lower level in Newman Center continues to be a special place for them to learn and grow in their faith and have fellowship with others. Wanda also enjoys singing in the Sanctuary Choir at the 11 a.m. service. With a passion

for music and dance, this past fall, she started a liturgical dance troupe as a part of Worship Arts for Kids on Sunday evenings for two age groups: ages 4-7 years and 7- 12 years. New participants are always welcome! On Wednesday evenings starting January 25, Wanda will be co-teaching the Daniel Plan: 40 days to a Healthier Life Forever through faith, fitness, food, focus and friends. As an avid reader, she serves as President of the JacksonMadison County Library Foundation. Wanda also loves ballet and attending performances when she can. Together, Pat and Wanda enjoy playing tennis, traveling, hiking, and cycling especially in other countries. “It’s a wonderful way to get to know other local people and cultures without the tourist trappings.” Their latest adventure was driving and hiking the California coast for two weeks this past fall. Studying the Bible is an important commitment for both. Pat finds inspiration and encouragement from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” For Wanda, I and II Corinthians on love are two of her favorite books. As a testament to her faith and as a children’s leader through the years, Wanda says she tells kids that “Nothing you ever see on TV or in the movies will top the stories in the Bible!” FUMC is an integral part of their family… their children and their grandchildren have all been baptized in this church. Active members, Laura Lee and Tripp Hise are the parents of their three grandkids, Chase, Mary Mac and Patrick. Son Edward and his wife, Tess who live in Charleston, SC are expecting their first baby any day. Son, William lives in Chattanooga, TN. Thank you, Pat and Wanda, for your service to God and others, reflected in your joy in life through your work, family and FUMC!

January 15 New Year Kick-Off!

On December 21, we hosted our Christmas party at Jackson FUMC. Below are some of the things we want to acknowledge and celebrate from that party!

February 5 Youth Super Bowl Party @ Sullivan’s Barn March 10-12 Spring Retreat To Lakeshore • Deadline: February 22. • Cost: $125. April 7 Grizzlies Game & Kutless Concert • Deadline: March 25. • Cost: $35

• That evening, just over 60 students entered our doors! • We raised $275 for Gatlinburg which the church graciously matched bringing our fundraising total to $550! These funds (and some hand-written letters by the students) were sent to Gatlinburg to help them in their efforts to bounce back after the tragedies they have experienced.

May 7 Almost Summer Celebration

• Four seniors stepped up and shared with their peers during our evening devotion. For the devotion we covered the four Sunday’s of Advent: Joy, Hope, Peace, & Love. Frances New, Sarah-Kate Ryan, Natalie Sullivan, and George Berniard all spoke for a couple of minutes on one of these topics in front of all of their peers! I was thrilled to have them share and they all did an incredible job.
