Mini-Fest Memories by Margaret Harrison

It was thirty nine years ago, 1979, when then Senior Pastor Jack Henton asked this question to then children’s choir director, Nancy Rahm: “Could you put together a children’s musical in a week’s time in a day camp setting?” Knowing Mrs. Rahm and the history of Mini-Fest, we now know that she did just that and it has continued for these past thirty nine years.

1979

2018

This year’s Mini-Fest for children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade will recreate history by resurrecting the original Mini-Fest production, “Down By the Creek Bank” and also return to the original rehearsal format and performance. Over the years the week of music, art, drama, dance, and recreation has attracted children from the community as well as showcasing our own church children in the performance at the end

Nicole New Gehrig Rabun Trevor Spencer Caroline Vaughan Corey Wyatt Jill Yates Alden Cardwell of the week long camp. Parent Nancy Byrd Piercey, an original cast member in the 1979 production, reflected on how excited she is to recreate the musical which started it all. Dad Scott Murray remembers his first participation was in “Hebrew Super Bowl” where Beth Burnette Patterson played the role of Delilah by using a puppet. Wow! Such good memories from so many years of putting together these fabulous productions. Other young parents in the church recall participating in such productions as ”Go, Go, Go Jonah”, “Hebrew Super Bowl”, “Creation Sensation”, and of course, many others as the years have flown by. Thank you Dr. Henton and Nancy Rahm for starting what has become an institution for our church and community. Register your children now for this year’s re-creation of “Down by the Creek Bank” where it all started in 1979. Details on page 8.

SERVING OPPORTUNITIES

Partnership with Lincoln Elementary School by Paula Butler, Missions Team

During this school year, First United Methodist Church has been a faithful PIE Partner (Partner in Education) for Lincoln Elementary School. In addition to having 27 volunteers for TEAM READ, members have provided other services and assistance to Lincoln throughout this school year. Welcome Paula Jones, mother of Jenni Gibson, who joined Sunday, April 15 during the 11 a.m. service.

Henry Richard Taylor received the sacrament of holy baptism on Sunday, April 22. Son of Ashley & Brian Taylor. Proud brother & sister are Jack & Anna.

Pianos Available

FUMC is blessed with two pianos that are currently not being used. They would be perfect for a family to use or even someone just learning to play. They are meant to be used and will provide years of enjoyment for the right owner. The Trustees have approved the sale of these pianos and we are asking $100 each. You would also need to pay to have them moved to your location. If interested, we can provide the name of a reputable piano mover and piano tuner. If you or someone you know are interested in purchasing either of these pianos, please contact Tricia Odom, Operations Manager either by phone at 731.422.4002 or email todom@ jacksonfumc.org.

In the Fall, we provided school supplies and the “Kids Who Care Club” provided 80 plus coats for the students at Lincoln. Our congregations’ generosity continued at Christmas by providing donations to give each faculty and staff member at Lincoln a $25 gift certificate. The faculty and staff were overwhelmed and said no one had ever done such a nice thing for them. Members helped school staff on their Literacy Night that had a theme of the “Polar Express”. Members helped with various crafts, greeted parents and served hot chocolate. Team Read coaches helped host Christmas parties for the students they work with by providing refreshments and giving each student a book they purchased for their students. They also did this again this Spring at the end of Team Read. In January, the Men’s Bible Study helped prepare, delivered and served a delicious spaghetti luncheon to people in the community who attended Lincoln’s Community Summit. They fed and served between 100-150 people!

On the Great Day of Service a group of members went to Lincoln to work in the library helping with various tasks and also worked outside to clean the yard and the rock garden. We have also provided school uniforms for students as needed. This Spring, we will be providing assistance with Lincoln’s Field Day, help with school inventory and in the library. Lincoln’s faculty and staff are very grateful for all that Jackson First UMC does for their school and nominated the church for the “Golden Apple Award,” an award given by the Chamber of Commerce each year to the PIE Partners that have provided exemplary services for their school. A breakfast was hosted by the Chamber honoring PIE Partners on May 4 at the Jackson Golf and Country Club. Kathy Abrams and Paula Butler attended the breakfast and received the “Golden Apple Award” on behalf of the church. If you have any ideas about things we can do for Lincoln, please contact the Missions Team.

Inspirational Reads by Pastor Eddie Bromley

Summer is here, and many of us will be traveling and spending time relaxing with friends and family. This down-time also provides an opportunity for doing a little reading; and I’d like to offer a few suggestions from my own stack of books. Let’s start with something that will make you feel glad to be alive and ready to take on the world. Brene Brown’s Rising Strong shows us how having the courage to lean into discomfort, allows us to be honest about our vulnerabilities and imperfections, while striving to be our best. Her research and the telling of her own story will inspire you to think about love, parenting, and leadership in a whole new way. Next, we will look at biographies. N.T. Wright’s Paul: A Biography gives us a new look at one of the most influential Christian thinkers of all time. Love him or hate him, you cannot take a serious look at Christianity without considering the life and work of the Apostle Paul. In Wright’s own words, “The problem is

that Paul is central to any understanding of earliest Christianity, yet Paul was a Jew; for many generations Christians of all kinds have struggled to put this together.” Third, we will take a look at leadership. Tom Bolsinger’s Canoeing the Mountains uses the story of Lewis and Clark to talk about navigating leadership challenges in a rapidly changing world. Though, originally written for church leaders, I believe the insights can be applied to any field of leadership. Finally, fun and inspiring. The book Mean Dads for A Better America, by Tom Shillue is a look at some of the values the author learned by growing up in 1970s America. This humorous reminiscing will give you a playful way of thinking about the challenges facing families today, and will give you an appreciation for the good that can still be found in everyday life. I hope that at least one of these selections will catch your eye and the reading from this list will make for a richer experience this summer.

The Caring Congregation by John Yarbrough

Jackson FUMC has always been known as a "caring congregation". When any of our members are in need, other members step forward and take care of the needs of these members. In an effort to ensure continuance of being a "caring congregation" and to further enhance our efforts, Liz McCracken, Lisa Harper, Jan Kelley, and I were sent to the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas to participate and learn ways to improve our being a "caring congregation".

From Thursday, April 19-21st, the four of us attended "The Congregation Care Ministry Seminar" held in the Wesley Covenant Chapel of the Church of the Resurrection. The seminar was led by Rev. Karen Lampe who leads their Congregational Care Program and teaches others how to become or how to improve being a "caring congregation.

that are in need of our support. We toured their campus facilities which were recently shared on CBS's 60 Minutes program. We walked their 8 step Prayer Walk on their campus and also attended their "Care Night" held on Thursday nights that provides dinner, a service, and breakout meetings to all of the support groups they have.

Liz, Jan, Lisa, and I attended different pre-conference courses, then attended the rest of the seminar with the other 200 plus participants. Through these sessions we learned new ideas on how to continue what we are presently doing and how to better serve those of our congregation

We learned a lot, had a wonderful experience, and plan to begin meeting to bring some new ideas to fruition to you - our "caring congregation". As we proceed, we will certainly want ideas and input from you on how we can better serve each other in our times of need.

Dick Nunn Sunday School Class – A History and a Heritage by Barbara Weaver

In the early fall of 1939, there was no class for “Young Marrieds’” at First Church – in fact there was no class at all for couples. A group of young couples, led by Johnny and Jane Parham helped form a young couples class and convinced Dick Nunn to assume the duties of teacher. Thus, 79 years ago the Dick Nunn class was formed. The only stipulation Dick made to them was that they must work to make the class grow and become a success. The class indeed grew and prospered. The first president was Curtiss Sullivan. In WW2, many members were called into service. It was during this time 194445 that the class elected it’s first female president – Merry Dell Woods. After the war, those former members returned to Jackson and again assumed their responsibilities in the class and in the church. In 1949, the average attendance of the class was 57. The class continued to grow and first hit the 100 mark on Easter of 1951 – with 113 present. Shortly after that, the class moved into Newman Center – which was the only vacant space large enough for the class and their piano. The class always sang songs and prayed. Members were heard to say that they felt as if they had been to church. In the 1955-56 class year the class reached 165 members and had an average attendance of 98. A written history of the class from the 1950’s stated that the Dick Nunn Class represented at least 10% of

In the late seventies, Dick retired from his teaching position, but he along with Blanche, remained active in the class as long as they were able. When Dick passed away, the class honored him with stained glass inserts in the doors to the classroom in Newman Center. Those doors are now in the Dick Nunn Class room. Other teachers from past years are Dr. Jim Price, Larry Butler, Rev. Lloyd Ramer, Rev. Lawrence Hay, Jerry Woodall, and Betty Morris. There may have been others who taught before Jim and I joined the class in 1982 that I do not know their names. When the class closed our teachers were Barbara Weaver, Mike Butler, Andrea Woods, and Wes Clayton. Nancy Rahm was our pianist until her death. We are so grateful for their faithfulness. Wes reminded us that when he was invited to become a teacher, he was advised that he could teach on any subject – “as long as it was biblically based.” Over the years the class has had many members who “passed through” as they moved on to other cities, as they were transferred with their jobs as well as to death, but most of the core members continued to live in Jackson and remained in the class and church. The cross that hangs in the sanctuary behind the choir was hand made by Billy Harris, who was a charter member of the Class. A memorial plaque lists names of deceased members. Yes – the Dick Nunn Class was the first “Young Married” class at First Church. A marvelous spirit of fellowship was one of the motivating forces behind this class. That spirit of fellowship, along with a desire to stay connected, persisted to the end of the Class. It is with huge sadness that we say “Goodbye” to this Class who has had such a great history with this church. The heritage left by this class is all the children and grandchildren of those members who are current members of First United Methodist Church – as well as those who “went out into the world”, with training from First United Methodist Church.
