Our Greeting Ministry By Bill Hetzler

I have been involved in setting up and working our Greeter program for several years. Some people probably hate to see me move in their direction because I might ask them to help! In any event, I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve in this capacity. The Greeting Ministry involves being at one of 10 locations each Sunday: 4 positions before First Awakening, 3 positions before the Sunday School hour, and 3 positions before the traditional service. It requires about a 30 minute commitment. That’s all. In general, I’d give the program a B- as far as folks showing up for their assigned spots. As we go into 2018, I’d like you to understand the importance of this Ministry. First, there needs to be a Jackson FUMC member at the door to greet members and guests. If we want to grow this Church, we need to make visitors feel welcome.

Friday, Dec. 22 & Saturday, Dec 23 No church events schedlued

I think we all agree that we need new members to grow FUMC and support the many good works of our Church. This is a BIG way you can help Jackson First grow and also keep us safe.

• A simple, “welcome” or “enjoy the service” goes a long way in showing hospitality. • Second, it gives you a chance to meet and greet visitors and members alike. You’ll learn their names and they’ll learn your name. It is wonderful social time. • Finally, the greeter is our first line of defense in spotting a potential problem. You know what looks “normal” and does not. This has become a major issue for all events where people are gathered. We will depend on the greeter’s good judgment to alert others to a potential problem.

“Advent in a Box” A family experience for the journey through Advent 2017 We have created Advent in a Box for families to enjoy the journey to Christmas at home, at their own pace. There are four activities, one for each week of Advent, representing four candles of Advent wreath: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. The final activity is a Happy Birthday Jesus party, which

Our hope is that your family will experience Christmas together in a meaningful way this holiday season. And that Advent in a Box will help toward that goal. “Advent in a Box” is available in Disciple Hall.

Merry Christmas! Jackson First United Methodist Church Children’s Ministry Team

A Christmas Greeting

by Fra Giovanni, an Italian priest Shared by Andrea Woods

I salute you. I am your friend, and my love for you goes deep. There is nothing I can give you which you have not. But there is much, very much, that, while I cannot give it, you can take. No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today. Take heaven! No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present little instant. Take peace! The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in darkness, could we but see. And to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look! Take joy! Life is so generous a giver. But we, judging its gifts by their covering, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering, and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love by wisdom, with power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel's hand that brings it to you. Everything we call a trial, a sorrow or a duty, believe me, that angel's hand is there. The gift is there and the wonder of an overshadowing presence. Your joys, too, be not content with them as joys. They, too, conceal diviner gifts. Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty beneath its covering, that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage then to claim it; that is all! But courage you have, and the knowledge that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country home. And so, at this time, I greet you, not quite as the world sends greetings, but with profound esteem and with the prayer that for you, now and forever, the day breaks and shadows flee away.

Caring for Others… Sharing Christ’s Love! Remember the “Coats for Kids” Drive” the Kids Who Care Club and Arise2Read Jackson had in the fall for Lincoln Elementary children, our partner in education school? An unexpected call came last week to the church from a mother of one of the children. Her daughter was absolutely “thrilled beyond thrilled” with the coat she got to pick out and wear on that cold day! This mother was so touched by the love from someone she didn’t know who met the need that she could not provide. To all who gave, thanks for caring!

“It’s God!” Member Spotlight: Wells Johnstone

by Bobbie Mays, Director of Communications

Can you imagine the excitement of mom and dad when they learned their high school senior had been named a “Top Ten ScholarAthlete in the USA”? Yet…they couldn’t let on to her or anyone else for six days? That recently happened to Valerie and Mark Johnstone who received a phone call (from a representative of Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards) that their daughter, Wells had been named a national finalist! For more than 20 years, five female and five young male high school seniors across the country have been named recipients of this award which recognizes their outstanding achievements academically, athletically and for their service in the community. Scholarships of $5,000 are awarded to the eight National Finalists and each of the two National Winners receive $10,000. After the presentation was made at her school, on November 14, ESPN came to Jackson, TN to film Wells for a glimpse into “a day in her life”. So, what is a typical day for Wells? She gets up at 4 a.m. By 5 a.m. she’s ready for her swim team practice held at University of Memphis-Lambuth which lasts until 6:30 a.m. She then heads to Madison Academic Magnet High School where she eats breakfast and then begins her classes at 7:15 a.m. Depending on which activity she’s participating in after school, she trains for an hour or two in track or swimming. Soon she’ll be preparing once again for the United States Academic Decathlon for which her high school team was the 2017 National Runner Up. Other activities include Young Life, Bible Study and her community volunteer work. Many nights, she doesn’t get home until 8 p.m. but

A part of the filming took place at her church. Members and friends of Jackson First UMC gathered for a “worship service” with Wells reading scripture from Philippians 3:12-16 and everyone singing the hymn, “How Great Thou Art”. When talking to her parents about Wells’ achievements and recognition, their immediate response was, “It’s God!” Such a natural and integral part of her daily life is her faith journey which began at home and through her church at Jackson First UMC. Following in the steps of her brother and sister, Foster and Mary Parker who participated in Confirmation class, Wells, too made that a commitment. In her confirmation class, the Youth Psalm she wrote as a 6th grader reflects her faith today: My Rock “God is like a rock — solid and there to stand on. My God holds me firm in His love. I can lean on my Lord for protection. God is like a sure foundation, because I built my faith on Him. My God does not shift, so my faith remains firm. God is like a sunrise — you can always trust Him to be there. My trust is in God because He never fails to help me.” — Wells Johnstone Christian Hesling, youth pastor shared that Wells “exemplifies a steadfast determination in all arenas of her life; athletics, academics and faith. One attribute that is very evident is her determination, not in the self, but more importantly, a determination that God will pull through in life.” Always taking her faith journey very seriously, it’s not unusual for her to be praying by herself before a swim meet or race or to rally a group of students to pray together. Her mom and dad have heard Wells excitedly and loudly thanking God for the beautiful day, for all those who are participating and for a good race for all. As the current holder of two school records and two district records in swimming, a school record holder in cross country as well as track and field and as the valedictorian of her class at Madison Academic Magnet High

School, Wells is on her way to achieving her dream. Wells’ aspiration beyond high school is to become a U.S. Navy fighter pilot. In the fall of 2018, she will be attending the United States Naval Academy where she will be on the swim team. On December 7, Wells and her parents will fly to New York City where they will meet up with the other national finalists. On December 8, one male and one female finalist will be announced and then recognized during ESPN’s national telecast of Wendy’s Heisman presentation. Wells has already established herself as a dedicated leader, an amazing achiever and a passionate follower of Christ. The future lies before her with a bright promise for success with a God-filled focus making a difference in the lives of others!
