Every so often I find myself gravitating to the beloved hymns of the faith. You know. Those hymns that have the power to take one back to a Sunday night worship service or a summertime revival. Our former Senior Minister now Bishop of South Georgia, Lawson Bryan, once preached a sermon series entitled “Heart Songs.” It was brilliant. We all submitted our favorite hymns and then we sang those hymns in worship for more than an entire year! Music and hymns shape our discipleship. They teach us theology. These hymns bind us together.

One of my favorite hymns (and I have dozens) is “I Love to Tell the Story.” The first stanza is the most familiar, and it says:

“I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story because I know 'tis true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else could do.”

And who can dispute the punch of the refrain: “I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.” If you just sang this chorus in your head while reading this, then you know this hymn as one of your own heart songs.

Here’s the thing: telling the story of Jesus and his love is the most important message this world needs right now. With so much contention and animosity, divisiveness and unkindness it is imperative that we tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. Now is the time to let our actions tell how Jesus has changed our story, because the world is hungering for authentic Good News. So, we read about the stories of transformation in the Bible, but the story of God’s love lives on in each of our lives who claim faith in Jesus Christ. The story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love are living and active stories this very moment. Within this edition of The Chimes you will read so many stories of Jesus’ love working in and through the lives of people. Thank you for BEing the church. Thank you for living the story of Jesus and his love.

2020 has been a big year for the Neeleys. We joined FUMC in January, bought our first home in Cloverdale in March and recently found out that there's a baby on the way! We decided to join FUMC after visiting several times and experiencing warmth and kindness from church leadership, staff, and members. We knew we were hooked once we attended one Sunday and Jay Cooper spoke about the building's history and the church's historic preservation efforts.

Our family first moved to Montgomery in 1975 for Pete to go to the War College at Maxwell and we joined FUMC then. Pat and Roger Norris followed us out to the parking lot and invited us to come back.

We were hooked. We left for a few years and came back in 1981 to stay. While in the Air Force we moved 20 times in 24 years, yet both our children were confirmed here at FUMC. We feel so blessed to have found such a terrific church home, to have made so many wonderful friends, to have participated in a first-class choir, and to have learned from so many teachers and preachers. We can't wait for Impact to be fully "felt" with the new organ and other improvements.

My favorite thing about my job is not only the connection we make with the children but also with the parents. As a parent myself, I really enjoy making parents feel like our school is a home away from home for their kids.

On June 22nd, the ECDC and First School started back to school together in Wesley Hall as renovations were scheduled for both ECDC and the Children’s building. The smiles on the children’s, teachers’, and parents’ faces were glowing! It has been a summer of reunions, excitement, anxiety, change, tears, laughter, adjustments, and celebrations. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Yes! There has been a time when we needed to be a part from each other and now we are in our season of togetherness. The schools’ directors, teachers, and children have enjoyed a season of learning and working together. Being able to watch the bond between the schools grow and strengthen has been a blessing.

The children have enjoyed Musical Mondays, Worship Wednesdays, and Fitness Fridays. The ECDC Pre-K enjoyed a fun day celebrating their “graduation." On August 17, First School welcomed back 92 children. We thank our ministers for their guidance in reopening the schools. We thank our parents for their support and patience. We thank the custodians for their efforts to keep our schools clean and safe. Mostly, we thank our incredible teachers! These teachers are working harder than ever with new daily procedures and protocols. We ask for your prayers for our school programs. As summer has ended and fall has begun we ask for prayers for health and the joy of learning to continue in our schools at FUMC.

Years ago, as we straightened up the Genesis Lodge at Camp Lee, we came across a Bible with no cover, the binding barely holding it together, and pages that were well worn and loved by the user. After asking around, the owner was finally identified as Ty Moore, son of Tommy and Vicky Moore. We were so encouraged to find a Bible that did not sit on a shelf at home but used to the point of falling apart. This was the Bible Ty received from FUMC two years earlier when he was in 3rd Grade. We have thought about that Bible over the years and how Ty set an incredible example for us all. Let us be inspired to read and hide God’s Word in our hearts every single day!

I remember how excited I was to have my own Bible to take to church each Sunday. The different wrapping papers my parents used to wrap my Bible are still taped to the back cover. When I got my Bible I was really excited because it was mine to keep. I went through confirmation class this year, and used my Bible from 3rd grade for the retreat through the last class. My younger brother Carson is receiving his Bible this coming year. I am so excited for him and all the 3rd graders this year to receive their Bibles!” - Ann Wilber, FUMC member, age 12 “We can remember when each one of our children received their Adventure Bible in third grade... placing their name inside and folding each layer of paper. Watching them thumb through the pages and the excitement reading from “their Bible”. It’s been a blessing watching our children continue to grow in their faith. Time and time again coming back to their worn Adventure Bible when teaching Children’s Church, helping with Vacation Bible School, or leading a small group as a guide to share God’s Word with others. The youth department’s summer looked very different from what we had originally imagined this summer to look like. We had camps, out of town mission trips, and so many fun activities planned that had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Despite disappointments and canceled events, our youth group still showed up in big ways to serve our community. Though our mission week wasn’t exactly what we had planned, it ended up being more than we could have hoped for! We collected hundreds of school supplies, hygiene items, and canned goods. We also had an opportunity to serve locally in small groups. We had students serving at Habitat for Humanity, Montgomery Area Council on Aging, Mercy House, and at the church. They came with masks and smiles ready to be the hands and feet of Jesus!

Sophomore Lela Davidson had this to say about her group's project at Mercy House, “During FUMC youth mission week, a group of rising 10th graders volunteered at Mercy House. Mercy House is a nonprofit organization that serves the homeless and residents of Washington Park neighborhood. Through the pandemic, they have continued to serve lunch to those in need. Our group cooked chicken and made chicken sandwiches, baked cookies, and made lunch bags. We then went to Mercy House and served the lunchbags we made to those in need. This experience made me feel like I was doing something good for our community and made me want to participate in more mission activities.”

We can’t wait to add more missions projects into our fall calendar. As a youth director, it is so amazing to see our youth really grasping the heart of Jesus through serving others.

Zooming has become a way of life during this pandemic, and the Journey Class has discovered some positive benefits from this technology. Our class was born from two classes combining together. We were guided by Dr. Frank Buckner until his untimely death in 2019. Zooming has brought our blended group closer together. When we gathered in our classroom with our coffee cups we tended to end up in small conversations around the room, but zooming involves a whole group fellowship. That has been a positive surprise! Attendance has been great with folks signing in from the beach, the lake, even visiting with family and of course from home.

Another blessing has been the Wednesday Night Conversations! A BIG THANK YOU to Gillian, Lucas and Jason for their guided study lessons recorded live. You have truly helped us to grow in our faith while in isolation. We have learned from and appreciate each of you modeling how to converse, explore and reflect on scripture even if you don’t always agree. Your individual insights have enriched our discussions with Biblical scholarship and understanding how and why the stories and recorded passages were important to first century Christians. Gillian’s discussion questions help us explore deeper what these passages mean for our lives today. Since zooming we have been dealing with isolation, illness and death around the globe, across our nation and within our church family. This has made us even more aware of poverty and the economic gap in our country as we watched refrigerator trucks parked at hospital doors. We witnessed through media coverage police brutality, racial unrest, street violence and peaceful protests all against the backdrop of an important national election.

Seriously, what is the Christian response to all this? We needed our faith community more than ever to help each other emotionally process. Some weeks we even wondered if our pastors had chosen particular passages because of what was going in our national news. In April and May as the virus spread and it became more evident that African Americans and other minorities were more adversely affected, we found ourselves discussing racism, poverty and white privilege like never before. Jesus came for all people. Everyone is the same in God’s eyes. Wow! The Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost to help us figure it out and move forward. That is a tall order! In the story of Philip, a Gentile, and the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8: 29-39) we find the importance of listening and communicating with persons who are different. That is doable and we started talking about what we could do when we can meet face to face.

A very moving week for our class was the week John Lewis died. He was very much a part of Alabama history. A couple of class members had very unique experiences with John Lewis and stories to share. It was the week our scripture passage was on prophets and who we might consider to be a prophet of today. Prophets don’t tell the future, they tell the truth! We were definitely celebrating the life of a prophet. When we finished our session Frank Cook said, “Wow, we should have recorded that discussion.”

ADULT MINISTRIES 50 PLUS MINISTRY T O G E T H E R

In a world where folks are required to wear masks everywhere they go and many businesses are closed, how do you entertain your congregants? Well, 50 PLUS has found a way to keep the party going! We’ve had several fun “together apart” events recently: Dinner & Virtual Movie Nights, Watercolor Workshop with Gayle Jones, and the Alabama Safari Park visit.

In late June, a group of 9 artists gathered for the Gayle Jones Watercolor Workshop, under a pavilion in Montgomery’s Oak Park. Gayle instructed helpfully as she always does, only this time from a distance.

The interpretations of her bowl of pears, with a variety of colors, showed such a beautiful prism of talents and skills. God was good to us that day, as the weather could not have been more pleasant!

In July, we held the first Dinner & Virtual Movie Night: an Italian dinner courtesy of Mr. Gus and the movie Two Popes. I took my delicious plate of Mr. Gus’ spaghetti and meatballs home and had such fun eating it while watching Two Popes, imagining how many of my church friends were doing the exact same thing at the same time. The same goes for our second Dinner & Virtual Movie Night: Wild Wild West Night, wherein the dinner was Longhorn Steakhouse’s incredible crusted Parmesan chicken.

I settled in with my fiancé and we had an informal date night over the luscious meal while watching the 1960 version of the Magnificent Seven!

Nothing can bring out one’s inner child more than feeding a hungry 800-lb zebra. Alabama Safari Park in Hope Hull, Alabama is a hidden treasure, and happens to be the perfect outing for a group such as ours. We drove our cars through the 300-acres of land, viewing the hundreds of wild safari animals on the property as they grazed, bathed, and even laid down in the road! We enjoyed driving our separate cars through, only taking a few moments to visit with our masks on before going in. After driving through the park, we stopped and fed the giraffes, watching their long tongues reach out and loop around individual pieces of lettuce. In the budgie (parakeet) exhibit, birds will sit right on your hand (if you feed them!). Something about being close enough to look into so many of these creatures' faces is enchanting and makes you feel deeply connected to God’s earth and His majestic creatures.

The body of Christ is called to step into spaces of great need wherever we can see it. Being able to participate in the food drive collection on July 8 and 9 at FUMC and distribution at Metropolitan UMC truly was a moment that felt as though we were able to step into a space of great need. The work that we were able to do during the food collection and distribution allowed me to step into a space of deep reflection about the great abundance of food and other resources that are far too often not available to the most vulnerable in our communities.

This reflection is a reminder to me that God’s great abundance is meant for every person created in God’s image and that we as a church must continually be willing to ensure that everyone is able to experience the fruits of God’s abundance. Being with the volunteers and the coordinators who worked tirelessly to make sure things ran smoothly was a reminder of the dedication and the commitment that it takes from us as the church to ensure this reality of abundance becomes commonplace in all of our lives. I am encouraged by and grateful for those families whose needs were met by the generosity of the volunteers and donors for this food drive because they have recognized and sought out the abundance that God has promised to us all. Through their witnesses of faith that God would provide for their needs, they have encouraged me to continuously seek the abundance within the community of believers and beyond that will never run dry. This experience has been a witness to the truth that God will provide. We just have to step into the space of great need whenever and wherever we see it.

This week, a dozen folks would have been packing their bags to leave for an FUMC Missions trip to Panama, where they would be working with Missionary Rhett Thompson. The children would be on a trip to Splash Adventure Park in Bessemer. Just this morning, as I write this, some 40 Respite participants and volunteers would have met over in Wesley Hall, doing lively activities with their typical joie de vivre. I myself would be gearing up for a trip to Lake Junaluska for The Festival of Wisdom and Grace, where I would compare notes with other churches, whose vibrant programs would be planning, executing and convening just like ours. But none of that panned out. Instead, our programs as we knew them would come to a screeching halt in mid-March with no warning.

Once the staff collectively recovered from the shell shock, we quickly realized that even in the midst of all the changes, panic, angst, and uncertainty, one of our many roles would be ever-so-important right now: service. Service to the community, to the hungry, to the medical workers, to the elderly, to the parents, to one another. So we pooled our resources and began to mobilize. Even though she wasn’t able to have the Boston Butts fundraiser in April, nor the annually lauded Pancake Run for Missions in May, Missions Director, Claire Smith, never missed a beat when it comes to finding ways for our church to be involved in serving the community. She has us working with agencies like Hope Inspired Ministries, Mercy House, Metropolitan UMC, Montgomery Area Council on Aging, Society of St. Andrew and Aid to Inmate Mothers.

Working with Hospitality Director, Kate Wheaton, we have fed people through Hope Inspired Ministries, Mercy House and MACOA’s frozen meal program. We have delivered hot meals for MACOA’s Meals on Wheels with our trusty team of volunteer drivers and we have made hygiene kits for Aid to Inmate Mothers. We continue to glean for Society of St. Andrew at the Eastchase Farmers Market each week, processing the donations which are then picked by the Salvation Army to use in their feeding ministry. Thanks to donations from you, we have been able to help Metropolitan UMC provide food for as many as 1,000 families a week during their Thursday mornings food drives. A few weeks ago, Society of St. Andrew sent us a load of sweet potatoes to distribute. These came in forty pound boxes, so we didn’t have the opportunity to bag them, but trust that a lot of people were delighted to receive yummy sweet potatoes to enjoy.

To continue our work in the community, Kate brought me into the fold when this began, and together she and I brainstormed how we as a church can contribute to the people who need a little bit of extra support right now. Our church has generously given items to first responders, medical workers, sanitation workers, and others who may not be getting the consistent thanks that they deserve. The collaboration among the staff does not stop there. In June, the Children’s Directors, Glenda Argo and Renee Norman, somehow pulled off Staycation Bible School, the pandemic answer to VBS. As a missional effort, they asked the children to decorate boxes for Respite participants. In coordination with the Youth, the children’s team prepared shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. In doing these things, they gave the gift of light to the families receiving the boxes.

ADULTM IMINISTRIES SSIONS In September, 50 PLUS, Children’s, Hospitality, ECDC, and First School will join together and create cards that the children can decorate for those who are considered shut-ins. There will always be folks out there who need love, support, a bit of extra kindness. I’m sure the collaboration will continue for ages to come, as there is still much to do. But one thing is for sure, the strength we have across the board when we combine efforts, as well as share ideas and resources, is truly amazing!

Oak Park located behind Jackson Hospital has several different pavilions with drive up parking, bathrooms, and power so we can have a fan and a PA system. Our time together will include class discussion, stretching, music, and art. These sessions will be designed for small groups.

In early July, Life South Community Blood Center (a non-profit blood bank based out of Florida) declared an emergency need for blood. Blood is being distributed to the hospitals faster than it can be collected. It is imperative to prevent delays on blood so that hospitals can continue to give life saving medical care. Meanwhile, many of the people of FUMC were stuck at home feeling stir-crazy and ready to do something to help the community. When needs and passion meet, amazing things can happen!

The plan was to host a blood drive in the parking lot of Wesley Hall on July 27 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Donors’ antibodies would be tested and a pint of blood taken from each viable person. The hope was that there would be enough folks to sign up that it would be worthwhile for Life South.

Dana Morgan, Donor Recruiter for Life South, reported that they host blood drives 7 days a week, and they sometimes last longer than 4-5 hours, often ending with only 11 or 12 donors successfully giving.

Many are typically turned away for various reasons. The donations bus can currently only accommodate three donors at a time due to COVID-19. And yet, against all odds, at FUMC’s blood drive, the blood from 27 people was donated to offset the emergency need. “One pint of blood saves three lives, meaning that FUMC saved 81 lives. Which is awesome!” said Dana Morgan, when asked about the turnout. Even with this small victory, there is still much to do when it comes to fulfilling this need. We hope to have another blood drive scheduled for early December, but you don’t have to wait for that. Please visit lifesouth.org so that you might donate blood today.
