After the Pentecost event, Christians in the first century met in their homes. They did not have large sanctuaries, fellowship halls, gyms, and obviously Zoom and Facetime were not in place to keep Christians connected. Yet, the early Christian church exploded in numbers and depth. They wrote letters, prayed for one another, and attended to Scripture for strength. Friends, here we are in the middle of this COVID-19 pandemic and most of our religious symbols are inaccessible. As I type this, I am mindful that we have not worshiped together in person since March 15, 2020. Since that same time, we have not been in Bible study together, shared communion, passed the peace, and our clergy team has not been able to make pastoral visits. Christianity is so different right now. Will it ever be the same again? Time will tell. We must find ways to remain connected without being together right now. The Spirit will guide us. Here’s what I do know. We are experiencing a distanced revival. There is a groundswell of momentum building. Our church remains on the front Dr. Jay Cooper lines of ministry in Montgomery every day as we feed, clothe, and provide masks to Senior Minister healthcare workers at the hospitals, for example. Worship continues to astound me, and I hear that sentiment shared among our congregation and from people all over the world who worship with us now. We have increased worship attendance from around 5,500 to roughly 18,000 each week. Praise be to Christ! My point is this: even though we have been asked to remain in our homes during this shelter order, we have found God will not be quarantined. Despite maintaining social distance from one another, God refuses to keep any distance from His children.

And, although we are sheltered at home, we are actually dwelling in the shelter of the Most High. Returning to our first century roots has its benefits, and I cannot wait to hear your stories about this season of life. We will get through this. We will be back together with one another soon. Plans are to have a “Second Easter” worship experience whenever we are able to fully integrate. Until then, know you are loved, and you are not alone. Hold fast to the faith. Find ways to share Christ. Encourage one another. Pray without ceasing and know I am doing the same for you. Oh, how I love being your pastor. God is good, all the time…

We joined FUMC knowing that Frank’s grandfather had been a member in the days of the construction of FUMC, but later discovered that his company had built several pieces that are still around the building. Becoming parents at a somewhat advanced age, we were not prepared for our wonderful first born and his well-developed lungs! We struggled with most everything, but always wanted to make it to church. Imagine our dismay when a fellow worshiper whispered that our baby was crying. We could hear him in the sanctuary through all the stone walls that separate it from the nursery!

We have been married 56 years. Until he retired at 65, Larry was a hospital CEO. Years ago, Bunny worked with her favorite people, three and four year olds. We have lived in Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Wisconsin. And, yes, we are very happy in Alabama. About FUMC, we love our pastors, the wonderful choir and the Respite ministry. We are at home at FUMC.

I am a teacher in the two year old classroom. I am the mother of two boys, Daishun and Don. My favorite part of my day at ECDC is when I walk into the classroom and hear my little friends say, "Hey Ms. Des! Hey Ms. Des!" My favorite thing about the ECDC is how we all work together as a team no matter what obstacles we may face.

We get the job done as one!

My favorite part is watching the children learn and grow. It is fun and exciting to watch them learn how to be in a classroom – participate in circle time, sit in their chairs, and walk in a line – and learn their letters, colors, numbers, and shapes. I’m thankful for the camaraderie we have as we seek to honor God and show the love of Christ to these precious children.

On Sunday, March 8, the Sanctuary was buzzing with children. The ECDC and First School were thrilled to be a part of Children’s Sunday. ECDC and First School, along with the church choirs, brought joyous voices to sing praises to our Lord. The children sang two of their favorite chapel songs, "Our God is an Awesome God" and "Father I Adore You." The children also recited their Bible verse, Mark 12:30-31. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself." After the children sang they enjoyed the Children’s Minute and Children’s Church. Many adult and youth volunteers helped over 56 children enjoy a time of fun, learning, crafting, and singing. It was a glorious day, and the ECDC and First School were proud to be a part of such a special day in the life of the church.

"To VBS and Beyond" was the theme of VBS in 2019. It was such a special week for the children and guests of FUMC, and it definitely went beyond my expectations for a successful week. I have been a volunteer for 14 years, but I never fully grasped how moving and meaningful this week could truly be until I served as a director. I witnessed first-hand how the Lord answered prayers for volunteers. I saw with my own eyes our teenagers pouring love into the younger children. I got chills watching children, teens, and adults all worshiping Jesus during each day’s assembly. To say it was a fun week is an understatement. It was a week that showed me how special FUMC and its people really are. It showed me that the Lord is alive and working in our church. Mark your calendars for June 15-19, 2020 for VBS this year! Planning is well under way. We covet your prayers as we plan this special week, and we welcome volunteers of all ages and skill sets. Stay tuned for any information related to creative adjustments that will be made for VBS 2020 due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Again, thank you for your prayers.

What a welcome I have received from FUMC Montgomery! I am so thankful to be a part of such an amazing, welcoming, and kind church family. Derek, Ford, and I have truly felt at home in the few short weeks we have been at First Methodist.

The staff, the leadership, the youth, and the church body as a whole have welcomed us with open arms and have truly shown us the love of Jesus! Youth Ministry has always been a passion of mine. Throughout my college years I had the privilege of serving on the youth team at Saint James UMC here in Montgomery. That time really defined my walk with Jesus. I learned what it meant to serve others well, especially youth. I really gained a passion for missions and serving the least of these. Over those four years the Lord truly broke my heart for Pictured is the DuBose Family: Luv, Derek, and Ford. the lost, the most vulnerable, and the broken. I decided after I graduated from college I would pursue ministry in some way for the rest of my life. Upon graduating college, I took a position with an organization working to prevent human trafficking in Eastern Europe. Through this ministry my heart for missions grew abundantly.

Visiting the tiny Eastern European country of Moldova often, I saw poverty and brokenness in a new way. I watched kids in orphanages beg for love and attention. I saw girls who were aging out of orphanages with no place to go who were terrified because they knew there was a real chance they would be sold into slavery. It was during those years the Lord really cultivated a passion in me to see people freed. Freedom from human trafficking, freedom from bondage, freedom from poverty, freedom from brokenness, freedom from chains, from loneliness, from exclusion, from fear freedom to know Jesus and the life of fullness he brings.

My husband and I have served in youth ministry for pretty much as long as we can remember. Both of us served churches in college and have continued to be involved with youth in our churches and community. We both know the vulnerable places where teenagers often are, and we have seen first-hand how they can be radically changed knowing the love of Jesus. We both are committed to sharing that love with the students here at FUMC. Our hope is that every student who walks through the doors knows that they are fully loved and, because of that, has the chance to fully live.

We want our students to gain a passion for sharing that love with everyone they meet so that, as they grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus, they become disciples, bringing that love to all those around them. What a joy it is to serve the students of FUMC. I am excited to get to know each of you and share my passions with this church.

"A sunbeam, a drop of dew, an oil painting and organ recital - beauty is all around us, if we but stop and pay attention. On February 21-23, First United Methodist Church offered the community a chance to experience a collection of the beauty that surrounds us at this year’s Sacred Arts Festival. The theme, Peaceable Kingdom, named after the oil painting by American artist Edward Hicks, expresses our collective hope in Christ for the redemption of the world. Hicks’s painting captures the wolf and the lamb dwelling together, as envisioned by the prophet Isaiah.

Throughout the weekend, each quilt, each sculpture, each song beckoned us to imagine Isaiah’s vision. Does Christ’s light shine so brightly in our hearts that our lives reflect such beauty in the world? Members of our FUMC family helped us see how beauty proclaims the sacredness of our lives together and called us to reflect on how we may each reflect the peaceable kingdom in our community.

Of course, we each know that the world in which we live does not yet reflect Isaiah’s proclamation.

Even now, as I write, our Cathedral in the Pines stands empty of all but a few clergy and choir that have gathered to worship on Sunday morning. Quarantine due to coronavirus has changed our lives together for the immediate future. Even so, light shines through the stained glass crafted by artists of long ago. Even so, light shines on the altar by candlelight. Even so, light shines through organ pipes as music and song fills the rafters, and I am reminded by the beauty in this space that no darkness can overcome the light of Christ in our lives. We need only pay attention to see the peaceable kingdom breaking in all around us. In times where the darkness looms large, moments like the Sacred Arts Festival offer beams of hope, and peace, and love.

St. Francis once remarked that "a single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows." Today, I am grateful for the Sacred Arts Festival and each person who offers a ray of light to others through their creative talents. May we be inspired to create such beauty with our lives in the world with the good news of Christ’s love for all.

A few weeks ago, we gathered together for our Great Day of Service. In one day, we packaged meals to feed 50,000 people, collected canned goods to feed the hungry in our community through Mercy House, helped raise funds at Culinary Caper to support MACOA’s Meals on Wheels, and accomplished some much needed grounds work around the church. What a day!

Matthew 18:20 states, "For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst." I think we all agree that He was in our midst that day. Thank you! Now only a few weeks later the coronavirus has made being together take on a new look. We continue to care for the needy and support our most vulnerable from the spread of the virus. While this has left some of our traditional mission projects up in the air, I challenge each of you to help those in need while taking care of yourself. Here are a few ideas: Pick up groceries or medications for neighbors who are elderly or immunity-challenged and shouldn’t go to public places.

Call those who live alone and have self-isolated to be safe. Having daily contact with someone can curb feelings of loneliness and brighten their day. Don’t forget those in nursing homes or assisted living. Though they have people around them, hearing from others can be a bright spot in their day.

Have you heard of someone who is struggling to find toilet paper, diapers, baby formula or other necessities? Put your networking skills to work and see if you can help them out.

These are just a few ways we can join together to support missions in our community. As we read in Galatians 6:9-10, "And let us not grow weary while doing good for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially who are in the household of faith."

Once it is safe again to gather together, our regular mission projects will resume. Some of these projects include: Gleaning produce at East Chase Farmers Market for Society of St. Andrew to be used at Salvation Army this summer Preparing frozen meals for seniors on the MACOA hot meals waiting list (this is a great Sunday School class project) Making hygiene kits for both Hope Inspired Ministries & UMCOR Delivering Meals on Wheels for MACOA

Many of us heard Rev. Ken Austin and Jada and Prince Davis speak at the first FUMC Summer Sunday School assembly last summer. They spoke about Mercy House, specifically about a summer program created by Jada and Prince for Middle School and High School students. Jada is a middle school teacher at Valiant Cross Academy and Prince runs the youth program for Rev. Ken Austin.

Jada and Prince were starting this program on prayer. They had no budget, only the Mercy House premises to use as a space to house the program.

Caroline Sease approached Jada after they spoke at the Sunday School assembly and offered to help with middle school English classes. Jada quickly took Caroline up on the offer. Caroline spent an hour or two on Wednesday afternoons during the summer teaching middle school students who were involved in the program. Though the roll varied and the class meeting time varied flexibility was key - one child showed up at almost every English class and stole Caroline’s heart.

Her name was Erika Lewis. Erika was young for the program. Because her older sister Jermiya had grown close to Jada over the school year as she attended weekly Bible studies, Erika was welcomed into the summer program. She worked hard to read the book Caroline taught and to write stories during the summer. In order to go on the weekly field trips, students were required to receive grades on their academic work. So, Caroline gave grades and wrote notes to the students on their work. Erika loved the positive feedback she received on all her work. She flashed huge smiles and gave big hugs each time Caroline praised her. A bond was established.

At Christmas, the Partners Class was looking for a family to sponsor. Caroline and Jada had been keeping up through the school year, even creating a unit that had Jada’s Valiant Cross students spend a day at Montgomery Academy, working with Caroline’s MA students. So, Caroline reached out to Jada asking about a family she might know of who might benefit from Partners’ help. Jada immediately thought of Erika’s family.

There are seven children in the family, ranging from 7 months old to 16 years old. Rolita Walker, Erika’s mom, was struggling to feed all the children. The oldest child, Jermiya, was feeling extremely anxious and had been reaching out to Jada beyond just her weekly Bible study to share her fears about what might happen to her family.

The Partners Class rallied. They raised over $1,000 for the Walker family. It was decided that the family would receive one $500 Walmart gift card to use for Christmas gifts, and that Jada and Prince would hold on to another $500 Walmart gift card and would take Rolita grocery shopping once a month for 5 months. The Partners Class also gave Jada and Prince a Walmart gift card to give them a little extra support for all the encouragement this amazing young couple gives kids in our Montgomery community.

Katie Bradshaw got the gift cards and wrapped them up. She also bought a card and let the family know this gift was from FUMC’s Partners Class. It was important to Jada that the family know the Lord provided this for them through a church. Jada took Rolita shopping one afternoon before Christmas and then took her to the Sease’s house to wrap all the Christmas gifts they bought that day.

After the wrapping was finished, Prince brought all the children to the Sease’s house for a Christmas dinner. Caroline’s parents bought each child a toy to open that night. The children were told that Santa stopped by a little early with something for them, and they absolutely could not believe it. The house was filled with squeals of joy. Erika and Caroline were so excited to see each other again, and the other six children were delighted to be in a house where there were no worries about whether or not they would be able to eat.

For Christmas, Caroline and John bought Rolita a crockpot and some crockpot cookbooks, which she opened at Christmas dinner. Caroline and Jada had talked earlier about how to stretch the Walmart food card using canned foods and meats cooked in the crockpot. This would be more nutritious and would allow for leftovers beyond what Rolita had been purchasing with her WIC allowances. Caroline cooked the meat for the Christmas dinner in a crockpot to show Rolita and the children how to use it and just how yummy food can be when prepared this way. All leftovers from that night were sent home with Rolita and her family. The children were so excited about their gifts and their eyes lit up when they saw containers of food being packaged to go to their home. Caroline had also stocked up on baby food for the little ones to enjoy during the Christmas dinner and to take home for later. The night was a huge blessing to all. Though it was housed at the Sease’s home, it was made possible by all the precious members of the Partners Class coming together to bless this family.

Members of the Partners Class also made a donation to Hope Inspired Ministries for Rolita to enroll. Rolita will gain job training there that will help her find a job to pull her family out of their current state. All because the Lord put Jada Davis in Caroline’s life, the Partners Class trusted Jada’s recommendation of this family in need and generously gave. Thank you to Katie Bradshaw, Jada Davis, and Caroline Sease who did the leg work! It took a village of the Lord’s people to bless this family, in turn blessing the village just as much.

When I first started singing in choirs, I fell in love with the communal nature of singing with a group of people. To this day, it still feeds my soul to get together with my choir family and our congregation to sing praises to God, especially in our beautiful Sanctuary. Nothing is more thrilling or more nourishing than the sound of a full congregation singing "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" at the top of our voices. But, we are living in unprecedented times. Social distancing and the care for the health of our neighbors is our priority for this time. And while we are socially and physically distant from one another, the Holy Spirit still provides ways for us to connect to one another.

On Sunday mornings, our small ensemble of singers representing our Cathedral Choir commits their time and talent to fill our worship with beautiful anthems and hymn singing. I am so thankful for their willingness to serve and their dedication to safety in doing it. Our phenomenal organist, Dr. Joshua Coble, continues to prepare special musical offerings for his preludes and postludes. I know you are singing along with the hymns at home and enjoying what we have all come to know as‌the "Josh Cam." The leadership of your Music Ministry is continuing to find ways to maximize our technological gateways to connect us all through the songs of our faith! Our audio/visual staff members, Joe Bryan and Chris Echols, have made us look and sound great for our broadcasts on Sunday morning. They have also worked overtime to record our soloists in our Sanctuary. Look for more song posts on our Facebook page throughout the week with different members of our Music Ministry combining with prayers from our clergy to bless our congregation. Also, be on the lookout over May and June for some special events shared through our Facebook, Livestream, and Youtube platforms. We will have special offerings and concerts from our Music Ministry coming up soon. And, even though social distancing will prevent us from having an "in person" Patriotic Concert, be on the lookout for a special digital broadcast of the Patriotic Concert at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28!

Indeed, how blessed we are to be able to share the gifts offered by the members of our Music Ministry so effectively through technology! This may be a time of social distancing, but the Holy Spirit will always find ways to connect us into one body of Christ!
