By the time you receive this edition of The Chimes, we will be in the season of Lent. The word Lent is derived from a Middle English word—lencten—from which we receive our word lengthen. Farmers appreciate this word, and this season, because it means there are more hours in the day to plow and plant fields. Fresh soil will be turned upward. Seeds will be planted and covered, awaiting the rise of something new in due time. Sound familiar? Throughout this season of Lent ask yourself a couple of key questions: 1) How am I allowing time in my life to lengthen so that I am spending more time praying, fasting, and giving alms to God? 2) Where are the fallow, wintry, and dormant places in my life that need to be turned under so

This season, I am asking you to observe a Label-Free Lent by plowing under the hurtful labels attached to your identity. This also means that we will let go of labels we attach to ourselves, labels others attach to us, and labels we attach to others. If we are to become more holy and to truly understand the power of resurrection, then we need to turn under all divisive labeling to be identified in one key way—as a child of God, redeemed by Christ, and gifted by the Holy Spirit. I invite you to observe a holy Lent this season.

We met while Phyllis was working as the summer Youth Director in the United Methodist Church in my hometown. We’ve been married almost 45 years with three amazing children and one precious grandson. FUMC has been a welcoming congregation to our family. We feel spiritually nourished through the thoughtfully planned worship, beautifully offered music, carefully planned educational offerings, and hands-on mission opportunities. We are happy to make this our church home.

I have many memories of special experiences of being a member of FUMC since June 1957, when my wife, Mary Ellen, and I joined. But there are two which I want to highlight now. First, being an active member of the Tower Sunday School Class has been a formative experience in my life through the association with all the fine people there. Second, being involved as a parent with the Boy Scouts of America through scouting units sponsored by FUMC has been another special experience for me. Our two sons, John and Harrell, both attained Eagle Scout rank and earned the God and Country award while members of Troop 15, sponsored by FUMC. As father and sons, we matured together through our scouting experiences. A fun fact about me is I received two high school diplomas when I finished high school, one from Walton High School public school in my hometown of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, and the second from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia.

TIME AT ECDC: 3 MONTHS

TIME AT FIRST SCHOOL: 6 YEARS

I started my job as the Assistant Director of ECDC the week of Thanksgiving and am so blessed to have taught for twenty-seven years in Montgomery Public Schools.

My favorite part of the day is seeing each smiling face!

I am one of the three-year old teachers here at First School.

The thing I love most about teaching here is everyday I am taught a new meaning of love and the kids inspire me to be the best version of myself.

The best part of the week for the First School and ECDC children is Children’s Chapel. This special time of worship is planned by the Children’s Ministry department to bring our two schools together during the week to experience the message of God’s love through music, prayer and scripture. The Children’s Chapel program is designed to build a strong spiritual foundation that reinforces a growing faith in children. Bible stories come to life as the ministers, members of the church staff, and teachers contribute to our fun storytelling group. During the first Children’s Chapel of 2020, Glenda Argo, Director of Children’s Ministries, led our precious little ones in a lesson about seeking the light of Jesus, as the Magi did. We walked around the Chapel following a star she held high while Tori Johnston played "We Three Kings" on the piano. The worship experience that morning concluded with an enthusiastic chorus of "This Little Light of Mine, I’m Gonna Let it Shine!" The above picture shows all the children smiling and beaming with the joy and light of our Savior. When we asked the children what Chapel means to them, they had such uplifting responses. Da Martez Segars of First School said, "I love Chapel! I learn that my God is an awesome God!" Hollis Trotter from the ECDC said, "I love singing Awesome God and hearing the stories about Jesus. I love being with my friends and sitting on the benches."

Why do some volunteers seem over-extended and others seem joyful? What type of service uncovers our true gifts? Perhaps you didn’t know Ms. Annette Porter served as the Pocket Lady for our church for many years. As the Pocket Lady, Ms. Annette would help children from Sunday School classes, ECDC, and First School learn and recite a memory verse assigned for that quarter. Afterward, children were able to choose a prize from Ms. Annette’s various pockets as a reward for reciting the verse.

When my children were little, I witnessed Ms. Annette instill a love of memorizing God’s Word in the children of FUMC. As Ms. Annette’s health started to decline, I approached Glenda Argo, Director of Children’s Ministries, and asked if I could be the next pocket lady. Every Sunday morning, I stock my pockets with Sour Patch Kids, sour Skittles, regular Skittles, and M&Ms to start my visits. I wish I could bottle the 3 year olds' reaction to my entry and use it for any other day that I might need a boost in my ego! I love to see children in various settings in town and hear "Aren’t you the Pocket Lady?" while their parents wear a confused look. I love their hugs every Sunday and the satisfaction they get in finally knowing all the words to the memory verse by the end of the quarter.

For me, volunteering is discerning what spiritual gifts I have, using them and finding joy in unexpected ways. I ran into Claire Moore, now a youth in our church, at a local restaurant. She told her parents "I know she has a real name, but I only know her as the Pocket Lady." That moment gave me great joy, knowing that Claire remembered God’s presence in her life through my one small act of service. We lost Ms. Annette to her health struggles recently, but I’m honored to carry the baton she passed to me in this marathon of loving all our children at First United Methodist Church.

FUMC Youth Group from Winter Retreat 2020 at Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana, Alabama.

Sunday school, 11 o’clock worship, youth choir, Sunday night youth activities, Wednesday night dinner, small group, early Thursday morning Chappy’s breakfast, occasional mission trips—this continuous routine of faith sharing and fellowship has never failed to be my foundation. There has never been a moment in my life in which going to church was a question. At an early age I was taught the lesson that church was always to be put first. It was a priority—a commitment.

My absolute favorite memories from my youth group experience have been in the little moments.

The late night talks at winter retreat, our love for Egg White Delights at Chappy’s, the sharing of a "Rose, Bud, and Thorn" - *thank you Mrs. Sally :)* - of our past week. The culmination of these experiences has never failed to prove to me God’s unending love.

The youth group has been able to provide these opportunities to so many God-loving youth, including myself. The combined efforts of all of our past youth directors have furthered this ministry, because they all truly loved each one of us with their entire heart. The dedication of our ministers and the support of parents is what has brought us here today, thriving in the midst of a chaotic time. And, above all, God’s omnipotence has been our guide through all of our unforeseen transitions. Now is the time to support the youth of every church to truly experience what God’s kingdom has to offer.

Finally, thank you so much to every volunteer, staff member, and parent that has taken their time to further the youth ministry. Thank you Rev. Jay Cooper and Rev. Gillian Walters for your support. We greatly appreciate all that you do because we could not have gone to such great heights without you! I cannot wait to visit in a few years and see the accomplishments our youth group has made! I encourage you all to never settle in your faith but keep adventuring and exploring all that those around you have to offer. God has never failed and never will!

I’ve attended a great many of the Bible Conferences hosted by our church in years past. I have come away from each of them feeling a little more knowledgeable, a little more clear about the nuts and bolts and with a greater intellectual understanding of how history, language, and cultural context play a role in what we can know about what Scripture really says. But the recent Bible Conference - The Scandal of Grace, led by Shane Claiborne - went a step further. It was discomfiting and challenging, and provided a bold vision of how the steps after understanding can and must create transformation in our hearts, our community and our world. For me, the scandal of grace has meant that I can no longer be content to give lip service to the cause of Christ: I’m invited, with each of you, to step into the cause of Christ.

50 PLUS Ministries has had many names over the years. These include Senior Adults, Older Adults, 50 & Forward and Wesley Wanderers. But whatever you want to call this faction of folks at First United Methodist, it’s best to leave the words "old" or "senior" out of the equation. These individuals are energetic, outspoken and they are most certainly ready to move!

50 PLUS friends enjoy a concert by local band, Bama Skiffle, and a cheeseburger lunch at the Cheeseburgers in Paradise luncheon in February.

"50 isn’t old! Different people are at different stations in their lives, which is why we try to offer variety in our activities," says 50 PLUS director, Adrian Borden. Many of the various areas of 50 PLUS are not as widely known as they could be. These programs include: themed luncheons and Lunch & Learns, movie screenings, visits to assisted living facilities, nursing homes and the home-bound, the exercise group, the Greeting Card Ministry, Caring Casseroles Delivery Team, Men’s Heritage Club, a Sunday School class at John Knox Manor and Oak Grove, Stimulate Your Brain games and activities, Book Club, and even 50 PLUS’ brand new Knitting Group!

Because of the many activities offered, Jodee Schwartz, former 50 PLUS Work Area Chair, was motivated to get involved right away. "When I retired I was so excited to be able to take trips with the Wesley Wanderers (now 50 PLUS). We have been to places close by, like Camden and Montevallo, and to areas farther away like North Carolina and New York. It is so much fun to travel with friends, and a great way to make new ones."

Current 50 PLUS Work Area Co-Chair, Cathy Hawthorne, shared that she feels 50 PLUS makes a difference locally, too. "It offers community, breeds fellowship, and helps others via its various ministries, not to mention – it’s fun!"

Our annual Missions Awareness Day was Sunday, February 23. In addition to our children’s ministry presenting flags representing the countries where we support missionaries, our bulletin and insert gave an overview of the work our church does in our city, state, nation and around the world, and also listed the missionaries we support around the world. The Hawthornes are based in Penang, Malaysia. McLean is known as a respected Bible teacher. He ministers regularly in churches and Bible schools on the Malaysian Peninsula and travels to other South Asian countries to teach and minister as well. Colleen is pursing a degree in Counseling in Pensacola, FL, where the Hawthornes have a home base in the states. McLean is the brother of our own Jimmy Hawthorne.

Kaupo is the minister of the Tree of Life Methodist Church in Voru, Estonia. We have supported Kaupo and his wife, Thea, in their ministry as they serve a congregation of about 100 members. An impressive fact about Thea is that she has translated Disciple 1 and 2 Bible studies into the Estonian language and the church now offers Disciple classes. Our own John & Mary Ellen Bullard were instrumental in establishing this relationship through World Methodist Evangelism over 25 years ago.

Rhett serves as a Board of Global Ministries United Methodist missionary assigned to the Republic of Panama. In addition to serving as a pastor of one of the local churches, Rhett coordinates Volunteers in Mission trips to Panama. Our church has taken at least 10 trips to different cities in Panama since the early 1990s to work with Rhett and the local church members. Rhett considers Canterbury UMC in Birmingham his “home” church, but has served in Panama for over 30 years.

The Groveses serve as Board of Global Ministries United Methodist missionaries to Zambia. They founded the United Methodist New Life Center in Zambia in 2001, and had previously served in D.R. Congo/Zaire since 1991. NLC has numerous outreach ministries including New Life Press, health education classes, a learning and computer lab, English lessons, instruction in new church construction and PET Zambia (Personal Energy Transportation Carts which are three-wheeled, hand cranked wheelchairs for victims of polio and landmines). Delbert & Sandy visited us last year and updated us on their ministry in Zambia.

Roberto & Monica Contreras serve with SIFAT in Quito, Ecuador.

Roberto is the director and is also a medical doctor practicing in the country. Monica handles the details for teams coming to serve in the greater Quito area. Roberto’s brother, Edwin, serves as the construction director for the building projects. Our adults and youth have made several trips to Quito over the years to serve with the local ministers.

SIFAT sponsors a Practicum for these pastors to educate them and then the pastor can apply for assistance from mission teams to help with their projects. On our most recent trip to Quito, we served with both a medical and construction team in Aida Leon. Our medical team saw over 450 patients in four days and filled more than 2,000 prescriptions. Our construction team mixed 32 loads of concrete that they wheeled by hand to pour footings and build columns for the new three-story multipurpose building on the property. SIFAT – USA is based in Lineville, Alabama.

In the United States, we have supported Jeff and Rebecca Burgess in their ministry through Campus Crusade for Christ (now called CRU) at the University of Kansas. Worldwide, CRU’s mission is to help students learn to know Jesus and to grow in their faith. Rebecca is the niece of our own Sue Loftis.

MUSIC MINISTRY T h e

For many years, the liturgical worship that we have celebrated in our beautiful Sanctuary has included some time-honored musical traditions around the time of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, we sing songs that shout Hosanna and we are led by the voices of our children. For a number of years, a soloist of the church has sung the favorite The Holy City by Stephen Adams. The story goes that an opera singer was jailed and while in his cell one night before his trial, he began singing The Holy City. There were three men in the cell next to the opera singer that were so moved by the message that they all fell to their knees asking God for forgiveness for their disorderly behavior that landed them in jail. The story concludes with the judge dismissing all charges with each man having learned his lesson.

On Maundy Thursday, the choir sings a variety of music while the congregation celebrates the Sacrament of Holy Communion in our own unique way as we gather in groups at the large table.

One style of music we sing during that service comes from the Taizé Community tradition in Burgundy, France. The music is characterized as simple, repetitive and inspired by the region’s folk music. Its serene sound is meant to induce a prayerful, meditative state in the singer and listener alike.

On Good Friday, we end the Tenebrae service in darkness as the Paschal candle is taken out of the Sanctuary, as we sing the classic African American Spiritual, Were You There. Did you know that the first published version of the song Were You There was included in a book of hymns in 1899 called Old Plantation Hymns and that the song was most likely composed by slaves in the mid-19th century?

On Easter Sunday, we, along with churches all over the world, will conclude our morning services with the triumphant Hallelujah Chorus from G. F. Handel’s MESSIAH. According to legend, the tradition of standing for the Hallelujah Chorus began with King George II, who rose to his feet because he was so moved by the music, which in turn meant that the whole of the court had to stand as well. However, a more meaningful truth about the musical masterwork is this: at the time of the composition of MESSIAH, Handel was penniless, destitute and seemed destined for prison.

He was commissioned by a group of charities in Dublin, Ireland to compose a new work for a benefit performance to raise funds to free men from debtors’ prison. The first performances of Handel’s MESSIAH gave freedom to many, Handel included. As we worship together this Holy Week, let us all celebrate this deep and rich tradition of song that lifts our voices during this beautiful liturgical season!

Organ Recital Sunday, April 19 | 4:00 p.m.

In celebration of our current 1969 Schantz organ, Joshua Coble and Andrew Risinger will present the final recital on the instrument on Sunday, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. Our current organ has been a faithful servant of First United Methodist Church Montgomery for 50 years, providing music for countless worship services, weddings, funerals, and musical events. Every one of us has experienced a period in our life where we felt we were barely keeping our head above water:

You go to the doctor… and get a diagnosis.

You married the love of your life…fast forward…your marriage is falling apart.

You just lost your job…and worries mount.

You lost a loved one and now wonder…how will you move forward with your life; what in the world is your new "normal?"

The list goes on and on of the hard things we face from time to Kenneth Haugk, Ph.D. time. They are real. They are hard. Despite the circumstances, Founder of Stephen Ministries. the emotions are the same: fear, anger, frustration, depression, loneliness, the need to talk to someone and have them pray for you is real. Yet sometimes in our effort to appear to "have it all together," we don’t admit to ourselves that we really could use some help. Often, we don’t want to burden our family or friends, or don’t feel comfortable sharing with them. So, where do you turn? The good news is, with Stephen Ministry you have someone to walk with you - side by side - offering a spiritual ear during these times of uncertainty.

Kenneth Haugk started Stephen Ministries in 1975 when, as pastor of a church in St. Louis, he found he just couldn't do it all. So, drawing on his background as a clinical psychologist, he enlisted and trained a handful of lay people to offer confidential care to their fellow parishioners.

The name comes from Acts Chapter 6, where Stephen was chosen to provide caring ministry to those in need. Today, more than 13,000 congregations are involved across the US, Canada and 30 other countries.

The first class started at First United Methodist Church Montgomery in September 1989 and was commissioned in February of 1990. There were 15 members in the original class. Since the inception of the program, we have commissioned 186 Stephen Ministers. These special people, Stephen Ministers, go through more than 50 hours of training, plus monthly continuing education classes. It’s a one-on-one relationship that will always remain completely confidential, so you can feel free to openly express yourself. Most Stephen Ministers and their care receivers meet once a week at a time that is mutually agreed upon. Life can be hard. But you don’t have to go through the hard times alone! Let us know if you would like someone to walk alongside you through whatever you’re facing. As brothers and sisters in Christ we are here to share each other’s burdens.
