Two months ago, when I wrote the inside article for The Chimes, I never would have imagined we still would be worshiping apart from one another. Who could have predicted the events 2020 has thrown our way? I recently spoke at a local baccalaureate service, where I shared a few of the 2020 highlights for the first half of the year. From Australia burning to Kobe and Gigi Bryant dying, to a presidential impeachment, pandemic, a volatile stock market, and racial unrest, I was certain (and hoping) Jesus would return sooner than later. This year has brought enough challenges to span a decade, so I also wanted to assure those graduating high school seniors that behind every challenge is an opportunity.

In the first half of this year, amid so many challenges, we also have witnessed the rise of new ministry opportunities, as well as fresh expressions of God’s grace. For example, we have entered into a partnership with Metropolitan United Methodist Church to feed one thousand households every Thursday. Our own Pandemic Pantry has baked delectable dishes of joy. We continue to serve as a supply line to first responders, medical professionals, sanitation workers, nursing home employees, and more. Our children’s department has adapted by launching VBS online and entitled it Staycation Bible School. Did you know that Cokesbury Publishing even commented on the excellent job of our children’s team? These strange times are challenging, but every challenge is dually an opportunity.

Take note of our innovative staff as you read through this edition of The Chimes.

Finally, we are preparing to enter the construction phases of our IMPACT initiative. You already are seeing orange fencing, hard hats, and equipment for the sanctuary project. The organ project began several months ago and is projected to be completed this time next year, once our walls are treated and the nave is voiced to the organ. Our other campus projects will begin soon, once a final determination is made about cost, timeline, and priority. To this latter point, I want to emphasize that every building project morphs as it unfolds. We will get to everything listed in the original IMPACT plan, but the order might change slightly based on accessibility and practicality of so many structural pieces. All that to say, there will be challenges, but every challenge presents an opportunity. This season in our story is our time to capitalize on the opportunity to invest in our facilities for the next generations of Christian Methodists. Together, we will indeed make an impact for the future.

I love being your pastor for so many reasons, not the least of which is the blessing to take life’s challenges and to find God’s opportunities embedded within those challenges. Let us be bold, be strong, for the Lord our God is with us wherever we go.

My family moved to Montgomery and this church in 1957 from Dothan. This church is special to me in so many ways. My grandmother, parents, siblings, nieces, nephew, cousin, as well as my girls and I, have been members here. We have had more than one generation of baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals. I am involved in a great Sunday School class, several small groups, and supper clubs. I am a volunteer receptionist, VBS, and UMW Bazaar helper. When the church first got hand bells, I was in the original youth group that got to play them.

Who is ready for a fun activity to do right in your home? Grab your Bible, mom or dad, scissors, glue, a piece of paper to glue to and red construction paper.

First, turn in your Bibles to Galatians 5:22 and read the verse: “But the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Next, we will look up a fun song on YouTube. Type in ‘Fruit of the Spirit Preschool Worship Song’ on YouTube. Sing it lots of times!

Then, grab your art supplies - paper, glue, scissors and red construction paper. If you do not have red construction paper, a red crayon will do. Use your scissors to cut out a heart. A heart shows love which is a fruit of the spirit.

Lastly, tear up little pieces of red construction paper and glue it to the heart. This will make a love mosaic! If you did not have the red paper, just color it red to show love! Have fun!

We are having a hard time containing our excitement over the upcoming building improvements which will be made possible for FUMC children through the IMPACT Capital Campaign. Renovating a building as sacred and beloved as the Children’s Building is an undertaking of historic magnitude. The name IMPACT was thoughtfully selected and could not be more appropriate, considering the number of lives that will be impacted because of worship, prayer and teachings in the upgraded spaces.

A special thank you to all who have pledged to contribute to help make this happen! The remodel to the children’s area will include a beautiful entry point for digital sign-in and greeting, freshly-painted walls, updated lighting to brighten the rooms, new cabinetry, a sound system to conduct safety announcements and for general purposes, reconfiguration of classrooms and nursery space to best suit ministry needs, spruced up restrooms, a serving kitchen and eating area, and a large activity room for elementary-age children.

How do we begin to convey the overwhelming joy we feel about what lies ahead? The possibilities are endless as we look toward the future of children’s ministries. Our spirits are energized considering the opportunities to disciple our youngest Methodists. These enhancements will be a significant part of lifelong memories and spiritual growth for generations to come! Join us in our hard-to-contain excitement!

The Costa Rica mission trip in 2019 impacted my life in so many ways. Last summer, the FUMC youth group traveled to Costa Rica to work with the Rice and Beans Ministry. We delivered food to the rural and urban poor, held a Vacation Bible School in the schools and did construction work on the ministry’s main site. The Rice and Beans Ministry’s slogan is “It’s not about the food. It’s about the relationships.” Each one of us made relationships with the staff, the children, the families and each other that will leave a lasting impact on our lives.

Each morning we either did construction work at our site or traveled to the schools to spread God’s love to the children of Costa Rica. In the afternoon, we all packed bags of rice, beans, milk, and more to deliver to people in need. We traveled to a different neighborhood each day and went door to door to give and pray. We experienced the brutal reality of the country of Costa Rica as we prayed for their hardships and needs, but we never expected the people of Costa Rica to request prayers for us and our mission work. The families we met showed us what pure thankfulness and joy looked like, and I will be forever blessed to have met them.

I have many personal stories that I love to share with my friends and family, but my favorite memory was on the last day as we delivered food. One of the families we prayed for requested a prayer for their loved one who was about to pass. As we left the house, a family member chased us down and asked us to travel to the neighborhood that the loved one stayed in. As we traveled by bus to this neighborhood, we sat in silence since we were not sure what we were about to see. We entered the loved one’s house and prayed for him as he ascended to heaven. Although this man was in pain and could not afford medical help, he was at peace and his family was there to support him. This scene lingers in my mind and has shown me a new light in our world. The man was ready to go home and see the God he had worshiped his whole life. I will never forget the day that God showed me what true love and devotion looked like. I will always cherish my mission trip to Costa Rica. God blessed me with a trip that taught me to never fear hardship and always be thankful for what I am given.

The New Room Sunday School class is experiencing the reality of Romans 8:28 during the “Safer-atHome” days of recent weeks, and now months. We have been meeting together in record numbers, enjoying more closeness and personal discussions than ever before as we meet weekly via Zoom. One of our faithful members, Temple Millsap, is serving as our class IT Director and sends all class members a weekly quick link to join in the meeting. So easy! Just one click and we are all together! One of the beauties of meeting via Zoom is that members can, and do, log in from remote places which would otherwise prohibit them from being at Sunday School. We are no longer worried about how we are dressed and where to park, but genuinely happy to see each other and to have our lessons guided by our beloved teacher, Jim Roby, and his wife Libba. It is as if we are visiting in each other’s homes and a certain feeling of intimacy is in those meetings.

Being able to continue our weekly fellowship and lessons has made such a positive difference in so many of our lives. I have had numerous mid-week conversations with other members of the class about how thankful we are to be able to stay connected, not only to each other but to the Church. We have followed the lessons inspired by Gillian, Lucas and Jason for as long as they have been offered. Lee Hanan, our class secretary, is faithful in fulfilling her responsibilities and always emails the class the link to the Wednesday night discussion, complete with the discussion questions so that we can all preview the lessons and prepare ourselves for our own discussion.

I hope Sunday School via Zoom will not go away when the pandemic subsides. It offers an added level of access to the Church for those who cannot attend in person, and an avenue of fellowship that we all need so much.

If nothing else, COVID-19 has brought out peoples’ inner desire for adventure and exploration. New hobbies are finally being pursued. Personal projects long dreamed of are finally getting attention.

Cooking is one of those areas in which, when life is going crazy, there never seems to be quite enough time to really tackle that recipe you have always wanted to try making.

Enter Kate Wheaton. Having trained and taught at Le Cordon Blue in London, and having served on the catering team for Princess Margaret, Kate is the very definition of the word "brave" in the kitchen.

She has a way of making otherwise daunting tasks, such as roasting an entire chicken, seem completely approachable and - I daresay - a piece of cake. Pandemic Pantry, aptly named due to the worldwide virus affecting us all, came out of a need for a little bit of fun and activity for both 50 PLUS and Hospitality Ministries. Fortunately for FUMC, we have Kate right here on our church staff. From the minds of Kate Wheaton and myself came the idea for the show, chock full of silliness, ukulele songs, prayers, church chatter and, of course, some incredible recipes coming to life before our eyes.

If you haven’t yet checked out the show, where we have learned how to bake scones, make chocolate mousse, lemon tart, turkey meatballs, sweet potato chili and the perfect enchiladas, I encourage you to do so. At the beginning of this pandemic, I found myself with more time on my hands and a desire to find a way to help others. I knew that our church would find ways to be the hands and feet of Christ during this time of uncertainty. When Lucas asked if I was available to volunteer for a short amount of time on a Wednesday, I did not even ask what was needed. I was eager to help in any way I could! And what a delightful project to be part of!

First United Methodist Church of Montgomery once again found a way to bring smiles to those who might need some encouragement. Members were asked to bake homemade treats for healthcare workers in the city of Montgomery. All sorts of brownies and cookies were made with love from our generous church members. More than 2,500 goodies were packaged and delivered to the church.

Additional volunteers were asked to receive these treats, label them, and deliver them to hospitals and rehab centers in our area. Each of the 1,250 bags had a special label created so that people would know how much our church appreciates what they have done and are doing throughout this pandemic.

Needless to say, the smiling faces at Jackson Hospital, Crowne Rehab, and Premiere Anesthesia at Baptist South were happy to accept these small tokens of appreciation.

I was given the task of labeling the treat bags as they were delivered. While this seems like a small action, it had a great impact on me. As I worked in my mask and gloves, I was reminded of the sacrifices these workers make each day in the medical field. I am truly thankful for them and hopeful that a sweet treat might have brightened their day! Hopefully, they left with a full belly. I left with a full heart!

As our lives have changed these past three months, First United Methodist Church continues to represent you in our community.

MACOA Through our partnership with the Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA), more than 30 church members deliver hot meals to seniors through the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program. The virus really changed this process. The company that provided the hot meals closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

To continue this service, MACOA substituted with “shelf-stable� meals. The "shelf-stable" meals were provided on a weekly basis with supplemental items that included a canned protein, a canned vegetable, instant oatmeal, and fresh fruit. Our church donated food for the supplements, and our church members helped assemble the delivery bags. Thankfully, on June 2, the daily hot meal delivery resumed for the MOW clients.

MACOA also sponsors a frozen meal program for individuals on the waiting list for the MOW daily hot meal. Over 120 people in our community pick up five frozen meals each week from MACOA. FUMC is blessed to have a dedicated team of church members who routinely volunteer to prepare and package 150-175 meals every other week for the frozen meal program. Two Sunday School classes, a few individuals, several other churches, restaurants, and caterers contribute to this ministry, as well. It takes a community to prepare 600 meals a week! MERCY HOUSE FUMC continues to partner with Pastor Ken Austin at Mercy House during these challenging times to help our local homeless community and others in need. Mercy House, originally a part of Common Ground, was founded several years ago by Pastor Ken. It now functions as its own not-for-profit organization, serving the homeless and residents of Washington Park neighborhood. Mercy House provides lunch, snacks, laundry facilities, and other services to help care for those in need. Pastor Ken may be a familiar name, as he was a guest speaker at one of our Summer Sunday School assemblies two years ago. Pastor Ken serves as the Senior Minister of New Walk of Life Church on Council Street, in addition to his responsibilities at Mercy House.

Though in-house client services have been temporarily discontinued due to COVID-19 restrictions, Mercy House continues to serve lunch five days a week to about 100 people daily, and also provides snacks and groceries to those in need. FUMC has supported Mercy House by cooking lunch and providing serving volunteers for five meals. A menu of pork chops, mac and cheese, green beans and peach cobbler was the go-to for a couple of those weeks. The peach cobbler was a hit!

ADULTM IMINISTRIES SSIONS METROPOLITAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Our newest project is assisting Metropolitan United Methodist Church with their drive-thru food pantry. Rev. Richard Williams has quite a production on Rosa Parks Avenue every Thursday morning!

The drive-thru operates from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and the church serves 1,000 clients. FUMC supports this ministry by providing food items and helping with food bag assembly. Cars pull in a circle around the church and a great group of volunteers loads everything in each car. This ensures the safest possible way for many of the region's most vulnerable adults to take advantage of this much needed ministry. SOCIETY OF ST. ANDREW Our annual summer gleaning project for Society of St. Andrew has started. On Saturday at the East Chase Farmers Market, many of the farmers donate unsold produce to the Salvation Army. Each Saturday, FUMC volunteers collect and weigh the donations by product and by farmer. A record of all donations is maintained on behalf of the Society of St. Andrew, who then provides the farmers with a tax receipt for their donations – a win for everyone!

AID TO INMATE MOTHERS We also have a current need. Aid to Inmate Mothers, an agency we support, needs hygiene kits for the women at Tutwiler prison. This is an individual project you could work on at home or in conjunction with your Sunday School class, covenant group, Bible study or other small group. Each kit should include the following full-sized (as opposed to travel-sized) products: a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, a bar of soap, a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of conditioner (not combined and no larger than 15 oz. each). All items should be placed in a gallon-size Ziploc bag. Completed hygiene kits may be left in one of the plastic bins in the breezeway. Please deliver donations to the church by July 12.

Last month, I served as a panelist on a forum of church musicians hosted by the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. The musicians, worship leaders, organists, choir directors and pastors all exchanged ideas and experiences in music ministry since the pandemic began in March of this year. The time spent with new friends in ministry certainly filled up my idea bank, and I anticipate some fun experimenting in the coming months. The discussion also gave me a chance to reflect on the many ways that our church and our Music Ministry here at FUMC Montgomery has re-imagined the ways music can connect us to the Spirit.

Given the importance of social distancing standards, we knew that we would not be able to sing safely with our entire Cathedral Choir on Sunday mornings. Different groups of eight singers have given their time and exceptional talent throughout the spring and summer to bless our worship services.

Combined with the extraordinary talents of our organist, Dr. Josh Coble, pianist, Meg Griffin and our AV team of Joe Bryan and Chris Echols, we have not skipped a beat in creating beautifully balanced music in worship. Starting with the “Ode to Joy Flashmob” experience, we learned that the gorgeous grounds in the front of our church gave us the opportunity to worship and sing together, safely extending our Sanctuary out into the park. Using the incredible reach of our social media platforms like Facebook, we have been able to share the talented voices of the many soloists in our ministry.

And recently, the members of our Cathedral Choir embarked on a new challenge – the Virtual Cathedral Choir! Each choir member recorded their part of the much loved Wilhousky arrangement of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. We then connected each recording and video together for a new expression of music ministry, connecting our voices in a time of disconnection. I am still amazed each week at the way the Spirit has been able to move through technology to keep our community connected. Each week, our Cathedral Choir meets for a “virtual rehearsal” on Zoom. We share our concerns and joys, because our connection goes well beyond singing. And yes, we sing too!

This unprecedented time of separation has given all of us an opportunity for new creativity and has challenged us to re-imagine ministry in ways that have strengthened our communal connection in Christ. As excited as I am to be back together again in the future, I am just as enthusiastic about the new expressions of our faith through music! Who knows what the Spirit will help us create next!

Matthew 18:19-20 says: “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” God is pleased when His children pray, but God is more pleased when His children pray in fellowship. There is nothing that will bind us together as a church more than praying together. If you have ever had a prayer partner, you know how your hearts are linked together. There are times when the church prays and God seems to come down, and it is glorious! It is what we call “the fellowship of prayer.” This prayer is the prayer we see happening in Acts 12 when the church came together to pray for Peter.

Jesus had an “inner circle” - Peter, James, and John. You need one, too. Every believer needs that special friend or group of friends you can call on at a moment’s notice - “in season, out of season” - to encourage and uplift you in prayer. You need to be that go-to person for a fellow believer. If you have this fellowship in prayer, praise God. If not, ask Him to bring that prayer partner(s) into your life.

Prayer is vital to the life of the church. Let us join together with other believers to pray this week and every week from this day on.

When the Respite Ministry temporarily closed the second week in March due to COVID-19 concerns, no one could foresee we would not be back together again as a group, as a family, for months on end.

Respite has nearly 65 friends living with dementia enrolled in the program, along with their care partners. Our daily hugs are almost tackles of love throughout the day. This is our signature trademark that says to these families, “We love you, and we embrace you and all the challenges you are living with and want to help lighten your burden.” These gestures of concern are hard to replicate when you can no longer meet in person.

The Respite Ministry staff and volunteers, as all the other ministries of the church, had to recreate what community outreach looked like. At first, we created videos of exercise and dementia-friendly trivia and content to email to families. After we realized many did not have printers, the team designed “activity packs” that have been mailed out weekly, consisting of dementia-friendly history, conversation starters, and puzzles to keep everyone active.

The breakthrough outreach, however, has been 25 meals prepared each week by volunteer Theda Tankersley, along with the army of volunteers who deliver these meals to our participants all over the River Region. A home-cooked meal and someone at your door that cares about you captures the spirit of Respite.

Respite continues to create new, safe outings of fellowship for our families. The greatest event so far was the “Birthday Parade” that occurred at the beginning of May. There were several participants that had birthdays, so Daphne Johnston and Laura Selby sent out a “call to action” for all volunteers to report to Cloverdale Park with signs of love and costumes full of joy to show our support, and guess what? Over 50 volunteers showed up to line both sides of Cloverdale Park masked, distanced and singing songs as cars rolled though the line with 30 Respite families! It was 30 minutes of togetherness, of presence, and fellowship that said, “Love never forgets!”

Respite’s superpower is the power of presence. Volunteers show up and, because they are there, our families feel valued and seen. Isn’t that what we all desire? One Respite participant lay ill with a positive test of COVID-19 in the hospital and a compassionate team of volunteers showed up in the family’s yard at 8:00 p.m. one night for a candlelight vigil of hope to support her husband and daughter who could not be with her at the hospital.

Safety is first during this strange season in all of our lives, but when isolation and despair draw near you will often find a team or member of the Respite family ready with a creative way to convey “you are not in this alone.”
