In 2022 Will Waldrip set out to harvest a desert sheep with his bow, and blew it. He didn’t give his arrow enough clearance causing his braodhead to open up prematurely on a bush in front of the ram, getting almost no penetration. He did what every bowhunter dreads doing, he pope & gunned him, finishing the ram off with a rifle. Will was ecstatic about his ram but knew he had to eventually come back and fulfill his archery desert sheep dream. Two years later, he finds himself back on the mountain in search of redemption.

STALKER STICKBOWS

September is the month every western bowhunter dreams about from October 1st the year prior and South Cox is no exception. Living amongst the clouds above 12,000 feet is the quarry he’d be chasing. High country mule deer, often referred to as the poor man’s sheep hunt, due to the unforgiving, rough, and sheer remoteness of the basins these animals reside. South and his 14 year old daughter Sophia set out into the backcountry in search of not only a buck worthy of the taking but an adventure. This duo fought amongst severe weather, long grueling hikes, for two weeks above the clouds. After numerous stalk opportunities that left South empty handed forced his hand to return into the high country weeks later to continue the saga. Alone, cold, wet and hungry day 17 will be one South remembers for eternity.

Victor Guarisco held his dad’s recurve bow in his hands—a familiar weight, a connection to the past.

Growing up, he’d heard stories of his father’s giant black bear taken in 1969 with a Shakespeare recurve; stories that ignited Victor’s desire to hunt with a bow. Though he took his first bear in 2004, his father’s passing left him with an unfulfilled longing.

In 2018, his son Antonio took his first bear while wearing his grandfather’s old hunting boots, sparking the idea to revive the old bow, untouched for 50 years. After a thorough inspection in 2019, the bow was given new life, but the pandemic delayed their plans for 3 years due to closed borders. Despite the setbacks, Victor’s passion for traditional archery grew stronger.
