Anthony Brunelle – 5th grade, Christ the King, Seattle

transcend Anthony and his mother, Janine, have not had it easy. Born when Janine was a high school senior, Anthony was her date to the prom. But like so many of Fulcrum’s tuition assistance recipients, with the help of family, faith, and Catholic education, Anthony and Janine transcend their challenges daily. Anthony is a confident but sensitive student who is revered by his classmates. Janine manages a Starbucks and soon will complete her degree as a radiology technician. They currently live in the downstairs of her parents’ house and do their homework together. To meet Anthony and Janine is to be showered in hope, optimism, and gratitude. Their smiles are infectious as they share stories of how their family, church, and school have embraced them and helped them succeed. Anthony is not just a star student; he is also a talented drummer. Using his aunt’s bedroom as a practice studio, he has become an admired musician at community, school and parish functions. He performs regularly with professionals and is a star at Christ the King’s Easter services. Anthony and his mother embody the power of community in our Catholic schools. They represent resilience, hard work, and rising above obstacles with dignity.

dear friends of the fulcrum foundation, Challenging times serve as reminders of what we hold most dear to us, forcing us to focus our limited resources toward our most precious investments. As you know, this past year brought with it many challenges for our foundation and for the schools and families we serve. Our endowments could not be sheltered from the historic drops in the world economy, and they suffered drops in value. At the same time, we received a more-than-20-percent increase in requests from schools and families in need. Nearly half of our Catholic elementary schools reported an inability to balance their budgets, and more than 1,000 new students requested assistance in addition to those who regularly apply. This context makes us especially proud to bring you the Fulcrum Foundation’s seventh annual report, because while it is true that we face many challenges, our most important investments continue to yield record returns. Last year, we supported more schools and families than ever before, distributing more than $2,000,000. The result of this investment: last year every high school senior supported by the Fulcrum Foundation graduated from high school, with many receiving high honors. The vast majority of those students are now enrolled in college, their futures bright with possibility. Can you imagine a better return on any investment? As the word on the previous page suggests, our students transcend, rising above poverty, heartache, and odds stacked against them. As investments, the students we support certainly carry risks on paper. Indeed they come from “at risk” backgrounds. Our donors, however, have consistently made the investment in these students and, as you will see in the following pages, the investments have proven wise. Perhaps our greatest achievement in a time of great change has been the stability we have been able to provide for so many of our families. This year, hundreds of parents wrote to us, concerned they would have to abandon their plans for sending their children to Catholic school or, worse yet, pull their children from Catholic schools for financial reasons. These letters repeatedly make it clear that the Catholic school is an anchor for these families during turbulent times. They may not always know how they will pay for their next grocery bill, but they do know their children are in safe environments, receiving second-to-none educations that promise to teach them the value of their own human dignity and those around them — educations that teach them to transcend. Sincerely,

Very Rev. Michael G. Ryan Chair of the Board

Deonte Dixon – 8th grade, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Bremerton

empower Deonte Dixon has faced many challenges in his life. A year ago he was struggling with his grades and behavior at a local public school. Recognizing greater potential in Deonte, his parish and school responded to a call for nominations for Fulcrum’s Archbishop Alexander J. Brunett Endowment for Families in Special Need. Deonte was chosen as a recipient. One year later, Deonte is near the top of his class at Our Lady Star of the Sea School and is a true leader. His report card shows all A’s and B’s, and as shooting guard he helped the school’s basketball team finish the season with a 7-2 record. His list of goals includes attending O’Dea High School in Seattle, followed by college and law school. Deonte aspires to be a lawyer because he wants to help people. Deonte’s story represents the remarkable potential that resides inside every student. Catholic schools make it their mission to realize this potential, so that each child is empowered to achieve greatness.

2 shaping our future

tuition assistance program For the thousands of families that apply for assistance from the Fulcrum Foundation each year, Catholic education is about more than just choosing a good school for their child to attend. For them, it is about safety; it is about faith; it is about the promise that their children will be imbued with the gifts of compassion, sacrifice, hard work, and self worth. The overwhelming majority of these families must overcome major obstacles just to apply for tuition assistance. More than 50 percent of applicants come from minority backgrounds. Nearly half of them come from single-parent homes, and most live near the poverty level. For many, English is not their primary language. These families represent the best in all of us and they shine a light on the most important challenge of our Catholic schools: to create communities of faith, to proclaim the message of hope, and to reach out with welcoming arms to all who come. The families we support bring profound faith and hope to our schools, and a belief that with hard work and prayer, God will provide. The Fulcrum Foundation is proud to have provided more tuition assistance in FY 2009 than during any other year in our history. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, more than 1,200 students were able to attend Catholic school this year because of our various tuition assistance programs.

Since the inception of the program in March, we have received 23 gifts totaling $83,800. These gifts mean more students will remain in their Catholic school and their families can continue to benefit from the safety net of faith and support their school community provides.

The Fund-a-Student program was created to increase our resources for tuition assistance. Through this program, we have requested gifts in increments of $850 -- the amount of one tuition assistance grant. In the spring, each donor to the Fund-a-Student program will receive a thank you letter written by a student for each grant funded. Our hope is that a sense of commitment will be built between benefactors and students and gifts will be renewed each year.

Despite distributing a record number of tuition grants in FY 2009, keeping up with increased need was just not possible. This past spring, the Fulcrum Foundation received unprecedented numbers of applications for aid, as families were hit hard by the economic crisis. Many families experienced a job loss, a drop in typical income, or struggled with difficult health issues and their associated financial burden. While in past years the number of applications had grown one-to-two percent per year, this year we witnessed a 20-percent jump over the previous year -- nearly 4,000 families total.

Bethel Zekariase – recent graduate, Our Lady of Guadalupe, West Seattle

persevere Zekariase and Alem Woldeselassie came to the U.S. from Ethiopia without knowing the language, without jobs or a place to live, and without their daughter, Bethel. They were determined to persevere and build a better life in America -- to establish a safe, enriching environment in which to raise their family. Devout Catholics, they first turned to the Church. Our Lady of Guadalupe in West Seattle became their place of support and peace, finding them a home and helping Zekariase get a job as a nursing assistant. Zekariase recently received his BS in Nursing from Seattle Pacific University, and plans to continue his education to become a doctor. Zekariase and Alem were able to bring Bethel to the U.S. when she was eight years old. Their dream was to give her a Catholic education. Unfortunately, they still were not able to afford private school. With the help of the Church and the Fulcrum Foundation, Bethel enrolled in Our Lady of Guadalupe School and her younger sister, Ruth, joined shortly after. The two girls thrive in Catholic school. They are fluent in English and pride themselves on receiving good grades. Bethel now attends Kennedy Catholic High School and has dreams of becoming a scientist or an archeologist. Ruth wants to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a doctor.

assistance to schools in need In the midst of a challenging economy, many Catholic schools throughout western Washington are in need of direct financial assistance more than ever before. For schools that are currently struggling to meet their operating costs, the shock of a significant emergency expense may necessitate a reduction of staff. Other schools may be forced to delay critical maintenance projects for years due to a lack of funds. Thankfully, the Fulcrum Foundation has a plan in place to keep these schools financially viable when faced with major expenses that exceed their budgets. This past fiscal year, Fulcrum awarded a total of $678,000 to 24 schools. Our Lady of Guadalupe School in West Seattle received funds for the purchase of a server to upgrade the school’s technology infrastructure. At Immaculate Conception–Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Everett, a Fulcrum grant will provide health and safety capital improvements including seismic retrofits. Schools and communities receiving Fulcrum assistance are grateful not only for the financial support of an Assistance to Schools in Need grant, but also for the gift of hope and encouragement. Katie Beyer, Principal of St. Mary School in Aberdeen, states, “As we enter yet another economic downturn, we all sleep better at night knowing the Fulcrum Foundation is supporting and nurturing St. Mary School.” Principal Beyer’s words are a tribute to all donors of the Fulcrum Foundation who are committed to keeping Catholic schools open through their generosity and loving care for the community.

Brittany Blake – Junior, Bishop Blanchet High School, Seattle

aspire Scientist, writer, doctor — Brittany Blake may follow any of these paths. When she was in sixth grade, Brittany’s life changed with her parents’ divorce. But one positive result was Brittany’s move to a Catholic school, St. Mark in Shoreline, where she thrived in the academic life and faith community. A goal setter and high achiever, she was valedictorian at eighth grade graduation. Today, Brittany is a junior at Bishop Blanchet High School, where she has received three student-of-the-month awards and holds a 3.9 GPA. Brittany’s mother, Suzanne, serves as study buddy as Brittany tackles three science classes this year. In return, Brittany helps out by watching her younger sister while her mom is at work. This summer, she did yard work, house sitting and babysitting to save up for a school trip to Europe. Her mom also worked extra jobs to help make the trip possible. Somehow Brittany also finds time for piano playing, writing, pole vaulting, and running, among other interests. Her motivation to give every undertaking her best effort inspires everyone around her -- especially her mother.

6 shaping our future

star grants for teacher & staff creative initiatives

The Fulcrum Foundation recognizes that our Catholic school teachers and staff are our best resource for continuing a tradition of academic excellence. It was out of this philosophy that the Star Grant program was created and continues to foster the development of outstanding educators.

This past fiscal year, the Fulcrum Foundation awarded grants of up to $1,500 to 18 teachers and staff members for the implementation of creative curriculum initiatives. Students who participate in many of the projects benefit not only from an engaging presentation of new concepts, but are also encouraged to grow personally in the values of leadership, service, stewardship, and faith.

2009 grant recipients The following teachers are implementing garden and composting related programs in their schools as a way to teach sustainability to their students and provide food and funds to those in need:

Stephanie Jacobson at St. Cecilia, Bainbridge Island David Rehberger at St. Thomas More, Lynnwood Jennifer Santjer at St. Mary Magdalen, Everett Jan Seeley at St. Anthony, Renton Liberty Sponek at Assumption, Bellingham

Kathy Budde at Holy Family, Seattle, will create a biblical studies program for 5th through 8th graders. Juleen Murray Shaw at St. Patrick, Tacoma, will transform storage space into a black box performing arts studio to enhance the drama program for middle school students and create new classroom space. Meg Stecker-Thorsen & Lorena Munoz Lipscomb at Our Lady of Fatima, Seattle, are purchasing materials for an annual celebration of “Las Posadas,” incorporating elements of music, Spanish language, drama, and art.

Jolie Aronson at St. Mary Magdalen, Everett, will update Passport Club curriculum for K-8 and paint two large maps on the playground — one U.S. and one world map. Judy Shafer at St. Matthew, Seattle, will upgrade the school’s art docent program with revised lesson plans, cross-curricular teaching materials and parent volunteer art docent training. Mary Pat Ankerson & Barbara Stewart at Bishop Blanchet, Seattle, will offer seminars to teachers and parents focused on improving teenage study skills, and meet with grades 6-8 to integrate curriculum model/ lesson plans. Shawna Zimmerman-Jones – Junior, Holy Names Academy, Seattle

shine Shawna Zimmerman-Jones’ radiant smile and laughter are contagious. She is the youngest of three daughters raised by their single mother, Sheila. Sheila couldn’t give her daughters much, but it was important to her that they received a Catholic education. Sadly, this past year Sheila passed away while undergoing medical treatment. Despite their shock and sorrow, the three girls found strength to push on. Shawna’s sisters, Shelby and Shalana, now attend college, and Shawna is strongly involved in the Holy Names community. She looks forward to being a peer mentor this year because she wants to help other girls transition to high school as she was so warmly welcomed into the community two years ago. Her dream is to become a psychologist. Last year, both Shawna and Shelby were voted by their classmates into the Mary Court, a group of students recognized for their commitment to service, faith, and community. Theology teacher Marianne Harris comments, “It was so beautiful seeing the two sisters up on the altar together. I think it was such a great affirmation from the students that they respect and look up to the girls, not only because they have experienced great tragedy, but because they both are the most giving and selfless people in our school community.”

8 shaping our future

celebration of light On January 30, the Fulcrum Foundation hosted more than 1100 supporters of Catholic education at the seventh annual Celebration of Light, with décor and atmosphere reflecting the many languages and rich heritage of our students, past and present. The Celebration of Light is the region’s signature event to celebrate and support Catholic schools, where the community comes together to honor the achievements of its schools and contribute to their continuing success. This year’s event set a record for underwriting support from our Partners in Catholic Education, who generously donated more than $200,000 to help support our Catholic schools. In all, the event raised more than $800,000. As in past years, the highlight of the Celebration of Light is the coming together of leaders and benefactors of Catholic education. John Luger, event chair, announced the exciting conclusion of the Embracing Our Legacy campaign, which raised $43 million. Emcee John McKay introduced four distinct Champions of Catholic Education who spoke about the contribution of Catholic schools and the way in which they foster the academic, religious and moral development of their students. Very Reverend Paul Magnano and Lois Dusenbery both received the Archbishop’s Award for outstanding contributions to Catholic schools. John F. Kennedy Catholic High School teacher Courtney Caldwell talked about the strong community that a Catholic classroom manifests, and the Archbishop Murphy High School Men’s Ensemble delighted the audience with their a cappella performance of “When You Wish Upon a Star.” The most moving moment came from a video which documented the importance of tuition assistance for a third-grade girl and a very promising high school student who, without Fulcrum’s help, would not be able to attend Catholic school. Peter Fewing made a powerful appeal for Catholic schools in the most challenging economic time most of us have ever lived to see. The generosity of people in a difficult financial environment is a true measure of how people see Catholic education as a cause worthy of unconditional support.

Linh Dinh – 7th grade, Holy Family, White Center

believe Born in Vietnam, Trang Nguyen left school at age seven to help support her family by selling sweet potatoes and weaving baskets. Today she is a married community college student who attends daily Mass at Holy Family Church in White Center. A few years ago, Trang fervently prayed that her three children could attend Catholic school, although financially it seemed impossible. After meeting with Rev. Phillip Bloom, she recalls, “He told the principal, ‘I don’t know how we’ll do it, but we need this family to be here.’ Maybe he saw me crying.” Trang’s son Linh entered Holy Family in fourth grade. He had some bad experiences in his previous school and had difficulty expressing himself. His new teacher helped arrange speech therapy for Linh, which greatly improved his communication skills. He likes the rules of conduct and safe environment at Holy Family. “God is really doing something for me,” Trang says. Without tuition assistance, Linh and his sister, Theresa, could not attend Holy Family. Asked whether the Fulcrum grants make a difference, Trang explains, “Some families think $850 is just one vacation, but for us it gives us life. The Lord is wonderful, He did it for us. In return, I ask the Lord to use my children to serve Him.”

embracing our legacy capital campaign Five years of dedication paid off this past December, as the Fulcrum Foundation successfully completed its $40 million capital campaign. With a grand total of $42.9 million in cash and pledges to benefit Catholic schools and students in western Washington, it was the largest fundraising campaign for a single cause in the history of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Funds raised through the Embracing Our Legacy, Endowing the Future of Catholic Schools campaign provide tuition assistance grants to deserving families, block grants to schools in need, and assistance for initiatives that promote academic excellence and faith formation. “It’s clear that many in our community understand and believe in the importance of a strong Catholic education program,” says Joe Womac, executive director. “It was essential for the long-term health of our tuition assistance program to build endowments as a stable source of revenue. When you offer a child a grant in first grade, you are essentially committed to supporting them through 12th grade. Under those circumstances, it is vital that we use both income and earnings as sources of funding.” The Fulcrum Foundation raised approximately 40 percent of the capital campaign funds to be spent immediately for direct school and student aid. The balance was used to create endowments that will generate income in perpetuity for tuition and school assistance. We gratefully acknowledge the passionate and tireless leadership of Mike and Mary Lee (shown), campaign chairs. Their presentations in partnership with Rev. Stephen C. Rowan (shown), former board chair, vigorously communicated the case for Catholic education and the logic of a longterm solution for the support of Catholic schools. Additionally, early lead gifts from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Michelle and Tony Audino, the Lee Family, and the Norcliffe Foundation were instrumental in the campaign’s success. To every donor, campaign committee member and volunteer, we say a heartfelt “thank you!”

legacy society Many of the Fulcrum Foundation’s benefactors have two or three generations of family members who have been educated in Catholic schools. To these donors, the logic of providing for future generations of students seems very real. For many people, making a gift to benefit children and schools in one’s estate plans can help reduce a potential tax burden and allow for a thoughtful continuation of one’s giving priorities in perpetuity. Fulcrum’s corporate structure and programs allow for such gifts to be easily received and administered for the benefit of Catholic education throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle. The Fulcrum Foundation Legacy Society recognizes those who have notified us that they have included Fulcrum in their estate plans. This spring, a second annual Legacy luncheon was held at the Broadmoor Golf Club. The late Judge James P. Healy’s bequest was highlighted and his widow, Sofia Healy, spoke about the impact Catholic education had on her husband and how it inspired him to make his legacy gift. The Legacy Advisory Committee is comprised of professionals in the legal and financial community who advise Fulcrum board leadership, staff and supporters on planned giving. We are grateful for their contributions. For more information about the Legacy Society, visit fulcrumlegacy.org or contact Sue Mecham at 206-748-7988.

amici Amici (Italian for “friends”) is a service organization of young professionals in their 20s and 30s committed to supporting Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle in a variety of ways, including fundraising for schools in need and hands-on service to Catholic students and schools. This past year, Amici partnered with Holy Family School in White Center. Amici members worked closely with the school to find ways to support the Holy Family community. Through fundraising events such as Amici trivia night and their cocktail fundraiser, members raised more than $3,000 for the school. Amici also held two service projects and supplied some much-needed hard labor to make the school community a better place for its students and faculty. Other accomplishments include volunteering at the Randy Terlicker Endowment Dinner and sponsoring Holy Family faculty members at the annual Celebration of Light dinner. Amici’s biggest accomplishment of the year was forming the Amici Board. The board consists of 15 young, promising professionals who have been influenced by their own experiences in Catholic schools and who share the same passion to give back to a community that shaped who they are as individuals. This coming year, Amici will partner with St. Edward School. Daniel P. Mullen, Foundation Relations Officer at Seattle Children’s Hospital, has been elected as the new Amici Chair. Daniel is enthusiastic about the progress made over the past year and is optimistic about the group’s future goals. “We have an active and committed board, solid support from the Fulcrum Foundation, and a clear vision: to be a catalyst for new energy, support and partnerships for the St. Edward School community, while promoting the value of a Catholic education. It is a blessing to be part of a young professionals group so focused on giving back.” To learn more about Amici, visit fulcrumfoundation.org/amici or contact Christen Lambert at 206-219-5811.

annual giving donors Annual gifts support the programs and operations of the Fulcrum Foundation. The giving levels are named for mountain peaks throughout western Washington, home of our 72 Catholic schools. Donors who contribute $1,000 or more annually are considered members of the Chairman’s Circle, recognizing their significant annual support of the Foundation. Members are invited to three annual events hosted by the Chair of the Board: the Chairman’s Breakfast in October, the Celebration of Light reception, and the Chairman’s Circle dinner in May. * signifies that the donor is a “Partner in Catholic Education,” supporting the Foundation at the Celebration of Light.
