Fulbright Canada serves as a vital bridge between Canada and the United States, fostering meaningful connections through academic exchange, research, and leadership. In 2023–24, we carry out our mission of providing merit-based opportunities that empower scholars, students, and professionals to engage in transformative experiences. From welcoming a new cohort of exceptional grantees at Fall Orientation to launching the Fulbright Canada Entrepreneurship Initiative, we expand access to education and innovation, advancing collaboration across borders.
This year marks significant milestones in our growth and impact. The launch of our 2023–2028 Strategic Plan sets a bold course for the future, prioritizes access to opportunities, enhances core programs, and strengthens our leadership role in international exchange. The Canada Colloquium IV convenes scholars and thought leaders for critical discussions on democracy and governance, reinforcing our role as a hub for academic discourse. Through Honouring Nations Canada, we recognize Indigenous governance excellence with the inaugural Good Governance Awards and facilitate a youth experiential learning program in Boston, deepening cross-cultural engagement. Meanwhile, the Fulbright Arctic Initiative advances policy research on pressing challenges in the North. Additionally, six distinguished leaders join our Board of Directors, further solidifying our dedication to an interdisciplinary approach to scholarship and international collaboration.
As we look ahead, Fulbright Canada remains committed to fostering mutual understanding, enhancing cross-border partnerships, and ensuring that education serves as a catalyst for progress. By providing merit-based opportunities and championing scholarly exchange, we empower the next generation of leaders to shape a more interconnected and prosperous future.

“Words cannot begin to describe the impact of this experience on my personal and professional life. The Fulbright opportunity has provided cross-cultural perspectives and experiences that translate into better teaching and research.. As a researcher, I have grown to embrace different viewpoints, learned about novel research tools, and applied new technologies to examine connectivity between brain regions. It was such an honour to meet esteemed researchers from an array of disciplines who are all concerned about cognitive aging.Fulbright experiences bring researchers together to promote a mutual understanding of world issues and to explore common solutions that expand beyond the confines of a single discipline.”
“The Killam Fellowship is an invaluable program that offers more than just a financial scholarship; it is a gateway to expanding one’s academic horizons and understanding of different cultures. Studying at the University of Virginia under the Killam Fellowship has profoundly enriched my academic and personal life, providing me with experiences and connections that will benefit me throughout my career.”
“My Fulbright experience has been transformative, providing unparalleled academic opportunities and fostering a warm and friendly environment among colleagues. The Fulbright program has not only enriched my research but has also opened my eyes to different cultures, making me a better scholar and a more globally aware individual.”
“The Killam Fellowships Program was extremely influential in broadening my academic experience and offering me a chance to explore another school and build connections. I learned not just about Canada, but also about myself and how I respond in new situations. I’ve emerged from this experience more resilient and confident in my academic abilities. I will always remember my semester abroad in Canada, and I look forward to returning one day to visit University of Toronto again!”
“My Fulbright experience was truly transformative, providing me with unparalleled opportunities to deepen my understanding of the complex security challenges facing Canada and the United States. The Fulbright Canada Program not only enriched my academic journey but also broadened my worldview and fostered a greater sense of understanding of Canada-U.S. relations. I wholeheartedly encourage others to apply for this exceptional program, as it has the potential to open doors to new opportunities, networks, and collaborations that can shape one's personal and professional growth in profound ways.”

he Fulbright Arctic Initiative is an international, multi-disciplinary collaboration on Arctic research. As Arctic nations take concrete steps to work together and address public policy research questions relevant to their shared challenges and opportunities, the Fulbright Arctic Initiative offers a collaborative model for scholarly exchange.
Twenty distinguished scholars engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary research as part of the fourth Fulbright Arctic Initiative, an 18-month program that advances shared priorities among Arctic nations. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, with additional funding from the governments of Canada, Denmark, and Iceland, the initiative fosters research on critical policy challenges in the Arctic.
Led by Dr. Elizabeth Rink (Montana State University) and Dr. Lill Rastad Bjørst (Aalborg University)—both alumni of the program—this new cohort includes scholars from across the Arctic region, including five from Indigenous backgrounds. Participants work across disciplines to explore pressing policy questions, engaging with governments, NGOs, businesses, and Arctic communities through research exchange visits and collaborative seminars.
the Fulbright Arctic Initiative generates impactful publications, reports, and policy recommendations that contribute to longterm Arctic security and resource management. This cohort supports the Fulbright Program’s mission of fostering international collaboration and deepening mutual understanding between nations.

Fulbright Canada 2024
The Fulbright Canada Honouring Nations Canada Initiative (HNC) is made possible through partnerships with the Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness and the Harvard Kennedy School. In addition, HNC receives generous support from the University of Saskatchewan, the Canadian Mountain Network, the Government of Canada, and the U.S. Embassy in Canada.
Honouring Nations Canada (HNC), a Fulbright Canada initiative, recognizes, celebrates, and shares examples of Indigenous achievement. Indigenous-led and Indigenous-informed, this initiative supports research and promotes knowledge sharing by creating national awards that recognize exceptional achievement, and underwrite case studies of Indigenous issues and economic development.
HNC hosts its inaugural National Good Governance Awards ceremony, celebrating the achievements of seven Indigenous nations. Held at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, followed by a private reception at the Rideau Club, the event
recognizes the Tŝilhqot’in National Government, the Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources, the Eenou-Eeyou Community Foundation, the Stoney Nakoda Tribal Administration, the First Nations Health Authority, the Nunavut Quest Dog Team Committee, and Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey. Each honouree exemplifies excellence in governance, education, resource management, and community development, highlighting the impact of Indigenous-led solutions.
The ceremony also pays tribute to Bill Montour, a founding member of the HNC Circle of Advisors and a lifelong advocate for Indigenous youth and leadership. The presentation of the Bill Montour Award honours his legacy of kindness, gratitude, and service to the community.
As HNC continues its work, it remains committed to sharing these success stories through research and policy briefs, strengthening Indigenous governance across Canada. This year also brings an expanded partnership with the Canadian Mountain Network and participation in the Braiding Knowledges Summit in Parksville, BC.

The accompanying summary financial statements of the Foundation for Educational Exchange Between Canada and the United States of America (the Organization), which comprise the summary statement of financial position as at August 31, 2024, the summary statement of operations for the year then ended, and related notes, are derived from the audited financial statements prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, of the Organization as at and for the year ended August 31, 2024. We expressed an unmodified audit opinion on those financial statements in our report dated December 17, 2024.
The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations applied in the preparation of the audited financial statements of the Organization. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements of the Organization.
Management is responsible for the preparation of a summary of the audited financial statements on the basis described in note 1.
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the summary financial statements based on our procedures, which were conducted in accordance with Canadian Auditing Standard (CAS) 810, “Engagements to Report on Summary Financial Statements”.
In our opinion, the summary financial statements derived from the audited financial statements of the Organization as at and for the year ended August 31, 2024 are a fair summary of those financial statements, in accordance with the basis described in note 1.

This new program empowers aspiring entrepreneurs to develop solutions to pressing global challenges, from environmental resilience to economic sustainability. In collaboration with Alacrity Canada and Startup Science, the initiative provides participants with hands-on startup acceleration, mentorship from industry experts, and a fully scalable online platform to guide them from ideation to commercialization. The 2024 Killam Spring Seminar takes place every May in Washington, D.C., bringing together Killam Fellows and program partners for a dynamic three-day event. Hosted at the Hamilton Hotel, the seminar features networking opportunities, professional development sessions, and cultural outings. After a hiatus due to COVID-19, the Fulbright Canada – Maple Leaf Foundation Exchange Program was relaunched, connecting high school students for a transformative cross-border experience. This year, Canadian students from West Carleton Secondary School in Ontario visited Boston, while U.S. students from Brighton High School in Boston explored Ottawa.
In Ottawa, students toured the House of Commons, U.S. Embassy, Carleton University, and the Canadian Museum of History. They also visited the Museum of Agriculture/Experimental Farm and participated in the Canadian Tulip Festival. In Boston, Canadian students explored the Freedom Trail, Harvard University, the Peabody Museum, and MIT, and attended a Red Sox game.
The exchange fostered cultural understanding through academic tours, sports, and shared activities, helping students build lasting friendships and global perspectives through historical tours, educational sessions, sports, and shared activities.
This program continues to inspire global citizenship and leadership by connecting young people from diverse backgrounds.
