Fulbright Commission News In Memoriam — Radu Florescu We learn with deep regret the passing away of eminent historian Radu Florescu, Emeritus Professor at Boston College and Fulbright scholar. Last year, when our Commission celebrated its 20th anniversary, Professor Florescu was one of the speakers who made this event memorable. He has been a great supporter of academic and cultural exchanges between the United States and Romania and a true inspiration for all those who care for Romania wherever they may be. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.

General Meeting of the European Executive Directors Dr. Rodica Mihaila, Executive Director of the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission attended the General Meeting of the Executive Directors of the European Fulbright Commissions, hosted by Hanka Ripkova, Executive Director of the Czech Fulbright Commission in Prague, from April 9th to 11th. Among the most important topics on the agenda were the future of Fulbright in EUR, European cooperation, fundraising, alumni data management, grant initiatives, etc.

Now Open: The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program 2015 The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission announces the annual competition for the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program for mid-career professionals who have a proven track record of leadership, a public service commitment and the capacity to take full advantage of a self-defined program of independent study at a leading U.S. university. The program offers a year of combined academic (NONDEGREE) and professional work and awards a certificate from the U.S. Government. Application deadline: July 30, 2014. Now Open: Fulbright Senior Award 2015-2016 Fulbright Senior Award is a very generous program for Romanian professors, researchers and professionals who have a doctoral degree or equivalent. Grants are available for conducting research and/or lecturing in the U.S. universities.

Fulbright Commission News Winter Orientation Seminar for U.S. Fulbright Grantees On February 6, 2014, the Romanian - U.S. Fulbright Commission organized its traditional Orientation Seminar devoted to the American Fulbright grantees present in Romania for the academic year 2013/2014 and to greeting the newly arrived U.S. Fulbright scholars.

The event was organized for the first time in a new format, that is Dr. Timothy Anderson and Dr. Joseph Dobson, the two new Fulbright Scholars for the second semester of this academic year were briefed by Mr. Bruce P. Kleiner, Counselor for Public Affairs, Ms. Marjorie Stern, Cultural Officer and other representatives of the U.S. Embassy at the headquarters of the U.S. Mission in Romania.

The entire group of U.S. Fulbright grantees met in the afternoon and participated in a dialogue on difference and identity within our two education systems entitled Fulbright and Cross-cultural Communication with Romanian specialists and Fulbright Alumni: Ruxandra Radulescu, PhD, University of Bucharest; Aurelian Daniel Muntean, PhD, National School of Political Studies and Public Administration, Bucharest; Daniela Calciu, PhD candidate, Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism/Ecole d’Architecture de Paris LaVillette. The event was concluded with the reception organized at Casa Oamenilor de Stiinta, where American Fulbright grantees had a chance to actively interact with Romanian alumni and friends of the program. EAAS 2014 Conference The EAAS 2014 conference on “America: Justice, Conflict, War” was hosted by the NASA and the Leiden University College in The Hague from April 3-6. Bringing about 400 Americanists from across Europe and across the globe the conference also marked the 60th anniversary of the EAAS (European Association for American Studies). The challenging conference program featured three keynote speeches, six plenary lectures, forty workshops and six shoptalks. Rodica Mihaila, Executive Director of the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission and founding President of RAAS, organized the shoptalk on “European Relevance of the Fulbright Program: Best Practices and Future Perspectives”. The shoptalk was well attended by directors of Fulbright Commissions from various countries, presidents of American Studies Associations and Fulbright alumni. Fulbright and the internationalization of higher education, the impact of Fulbright programs on American Studies, the future of Fulbright in Europe and U.S. government support for Fulbright were among the topics presented by Penny Egan (Director, Fulbright Commission UK), Julia Stefanova (Director, Fulbright Commission, Bulgaria), Marcel Oomen (Director, Fulbright Commission, Netherlands), Malgorzata Krasowska (Director, Fulbright Commission, Poland), Boris Vejdovsky (University of Lausanne), Adina Ciugureanu (RAAS President) and Robert Anderson (Deputy Public Affairs Officer, Embassy of the United States of America - The Hague, Netherlands).

Conference on American Studies at "Transilvania" University in Brasov At the beginning of March, “Transilvania” University of Brasov hosted a conference entitled American Studies: best practices and opportunities with the participation of the American Studies section at the University of Bucharest and the Fulbright Commission. The invited speakers included Professor Rodica Mihaila, Dr. Ruxandra Radulescu, Dr. Ilinca Dianconu, and Corina Danaila, program director at the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission. The event was organized and made possible by the Faculty of Letters and the special contribution of Dean Adrian Lacatus, Professor Adrian Bodiu, and Dr. Gabriela Chefneux and Dr. Cristian Pralea from the American Studies section.

Four young Romanian and four young American playwrights were commissioned in an attempt to explore cross borders writing and playwright promotion. They were all given the same prompt “My New Jeans From H and M” and set free to write 10 minute plays about whatever was inspired.

The Archaeology of Memory - by U.S. Fulbrighter Vlad Basarab Multimedia artist Vlad Basarab held a presentation on his recent performance, video and installation work. The event was organized by the U.S. Embassy & the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission at the American Corner Bucharest. Vlad is researching the loss of collective memory as a result of the communist persecution of Romanian intellectuals and writers.

“The past plays an important part in my creative process. My role as an artist is to dig through layers of history like a cultural and psychological archaeologist. The Archaeology of Memory series has been influenced by the loss of collective culture and memory and is an attempt to make audience link the present to the past, preserving and transforming collective memory.” – Vlad Basarab

Fulbright Commission News ► FROM U.S. AND ROMANIAN FULBRIGHTERS The Enrichment Seminar in Washington DC: Thoughts from a Romanian Fulbrighter Rodica Sutu, Fulbright Junior Researcher in Communication Sciences, University of Florida, sent us her thoughts on participation in the Enrichment Seminar held in Washington DC on April 2-6.

"I must confess that, in the beginning, I was not very happy that the topic I applied for - “Political change and leadership” - was changed to - “Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation” - for the enrichment seminar to which I was invited this April. However, I now realize the importance of this topic in the long run; it is very much like changing the mindset to go beyond your comfort zone, think bigger than your field of expertise, to get inspired to develop strategies that redesign your life and others. As a social experiment, it was a challenge indeed to talk with as many as possible interesting Fulbrighters in 4 days, as we are 150 people there... It was very similar to a speed-dating event, so rewarding in the end, as I feel that this specific enrichment seminar gathered the leaders of the whole Fulbright program."

Fulbright Alumnus Octavian Manea @ One World Romania During the seventh edition of One World Romania, a well-established international film festival dedicated to human rights documentaries, an evening screening at The Peasant Museum was followed by a discussion with Fulbright Junior Grantee (2012/2013) Octavian Manea. Octavian is a journalist writing on foreign policy issues in renowned magazines such as Foreign Policy (Romania) and Revista 22. The Monument of the Romanian Language in Chisinau The Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova recently announced the winners of the international competition for a monument dedicated to the Romanian language: Vlad Basarab and Andrei Ciubotaru. The monument was designed as an open book with the pages spread out at 360 degrees. According to the Moldavian Academy this is an “event of historical significance”, as the monument will “transcend the history of Romanian space and the Romanian language”. Vlad Basarab is a multi-media, video and performance artist from West Virginia University, WV. He is currently a Fulbright Researcher in Romania affiliated with the National University of Arts, Bucharest. Fulbright Commission News ► FROM U.S. AND ROMANIAN FULBRIGHTERS "Be Roma for a Day" At the beginning of April, Humphrey Fellow Florin Priboi, American University Washington D.C., is organizing an outdoor event entitled “Be Roma for a Day”. This will celebrate the International Day of Roma and will take place at American University Main Campus: Kogard & Mass & Loan (across the street from Katzen Center). Florin has sent us the list of activities designed for that day: 1. Write a message for Roma on the Wall; 2. Take a picture with the poster “I am Roma Today” and post it on Facebook Page “Be Roma for A Day”; 3. Ask a Roma who are Roma; 4. On the Microphone – say a good thing about Roma.

Students’ Symposium in Timisoara During the 19th Symposium of Students in English organized by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures of the University of the West in Timisoara in March, Professor Roger Craik gave a poetry reading as part of the opening session.

Roger is currently a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Oradea, teaching Writing and English Language. Two new books of Roger’s will be coming out soon and we can only look forward to a volume of poetry written by him while in Romania.

Călin (a Modern Tale) by U.S. Fulbright Grantee Hannah Wolf Calin is a show inspired by Franz Xaver Kroetz’s Wunschkonzert and by Mihai Eminescu’s Călin (Fairy Tale Pages) and written by Hannah Wolf together with Horia Suru. The opening night of the show was hosted by Bacovia Municipal Theatre in Bacau, on Sunday, March 2, 2014 (http://www.teatrulbacovia.ro/noutati_11.php).

For Hannah, an American Theatre Director, Dramaturg and Creative Producer present in Romania as a Fulbright Researcher, this project was one more opportunity to immerse in Romanian/European culture.

Interview with Fulbrighter Justin Classen Justin Classen, a Fulbright Student grantee in Romania this year, was invited for a presentation during the alumni meeting of Aspire Academy, a leadership and entrepreneurship program in Romania. During the event, Justin was interviewed by ProTv (one of the important TV stations in Romania) and spoke on his research work on Romania’s modern history. Fulbright Educational Advising Center – EducationUSA News A Warm Welcome to the Fulbright Educational Advising Center—EducationUSA Team We are happy to introduce the new team in place at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center (FEAC) starting April 2014. Ruxandra Radulescu, is the new full-time educational adviser, and Corina Danaila will also be advising parttime. Laura Silvas will be with us until the end of June.

Ruxandra comes to FEAC from the American Studies Department at the University of Bucharest, where she has taught classes in American and Native American literature and culture. She has master’s degrees in American Studies from the University of Bucharest and English from Emporia State University and a PhD from the University of Bucharest.

Corina has been coordinating the Fulbright Program for Romanian citizens since 2008. She has a Master in American Studies and a Master in Communication Campaigns in Public Relations and Advertising from the University of Bucharest.

Visit to Romania of the U.S. Vice President Joe Biden Laura Silvas, a student in the American Studies Program at the University of Bucharest and part-time assistant adviser at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center had the high honor of introducing Vice President Joe Biden at the meeting with Romanian Civil Society Groups and Students organized at the Cotroceni palace on May 21.

New Intern at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center The FEAC team has one new member: David A. Henriquez, soon to finish his BA in International Studies and Spanish at the Portland State University College in Portland, Oregon.

David’s internship in Romania comes right after another period of internship at the Fulbright Commission in London; he is participating in many of the FEAC activities and will stay in Bucharest the beginning of July.

“Decebal” High School Students Consider US Study Opportunities At the end of May, the Fulbright Education Advising Center/FEAC team held an information session at “Decebal” Bilingual High School in Bucharest, where 40+ high school students (10th & 11th graders) took part in. Our FEAC intern, David Henriquez, delivered a presentation on “Study in the USA” which focused on studying abroad in the US at an undergraduate level. We discussed the application process, personal statement, choosing the right university and the ways in which our EducationUSA advising team can help prospective applicants. The students participated in our Q&A session and did not miss the opportunity to ask about American culture, life as a student and even myths about the Greek life at a US university campus. We would like to thank Prof. Virginia Dutu for inviting us to speak today and we look forward to our next meeting.

Fulbright Educational Advising Center – EducationUSA News U.S. Professor Shares an Insider’s View of Three American Universities The American Corner Bucharest, in cooperation with the Romanian-US Fulbright Commission and its EducationUSA Advising Center (FEAC), hosted another presentation on US study opportunities and academic life at the end of May. Professor Robert Lawrence (2013-2014 U.S. Fulbright Scholar/University of South Florida) offered the audience a comparative view of the American and Romanian systems of higher education. Students and high schoolers from Bucharest had the opportunity to find out more about American colleges, departments and programs, types of degrees, campus life, research opportunities, student organizations and cultural diversity. Professor Lawrence provided an insider’s view of three American universities – UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and University of South Florida – based on his own experiences first as a student and then as a faculty member. It was also an opportunity for the audience to learn about the educational advising services provided by FEAC to all those interested in seeking an undergraduate and graduate degree in the U.S. Fulbright Educational Advising Center Session at Tudor Vianu High School in Bucharest 9th and 10th graders from Tudor Vianu High School in Bucharest attended a Fulbright Educational Advising Center/FEAC information session this Wednesday. The students had the opportunity to interact with two dynamic speakers, Anna Sherod, U.S. Fulbright Grantee, and David Henriquez, U.S. FEAC intern, who engaged the audience in a lively conversation. The presentation provided practical information on US college admissions and campus life, as well as on the resources available at FEAC. The event ended with a Q&A session, including small prizes for the best answers and questions from the audience.

FEAC is part of the EducationUSA network as the only certified EducationUSA Center in Romania.

Vanderbilt University Representative in Bucharest: Introducing New Audiences to U.S. Study The EducationUSA Advising Center of the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission/FEAC hosted a session spotlighting U.S. undergraduate study and Vanderbilt University, Tennessee.

John Nesbitt, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Vanderbilt University gave a presentation to students from several high schools in Bucharest, including a group of students from the National College I.L. Caragiale, addressing topics such as the university life and adjustment, the generous financial aid offered by the institution and Liberal Arts education - a concept specific for the U.S. undergraduate study system.

The audience was honored by the presence of Cheryl Francisconi, Regional Educational Advising Coordinator (REAC) Southern Europe EducationUSA, who visited our institution for a few days. The session was also joined live by high schools students in Cluj-Napoca, who gathered at the American Corner in Cluj.

Fulbright Educational Advising Center – EducationUSA News Fulbright Commission Reaches Students of SNSPA In April, the students of the National School of Political Science and Public Administration had the opportunity to find out more on graduate study opportunities in the US during the presentation entitled “The Fulbright Student Award 2015-2016 and Independent Study Opportunities in the U.S.” , given by Romanian Program Coordinator Corina Danaila, Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission. The participants learned on the two directions they can choose in order to pursue graduate studies in the U.S. – applying for a Fulbright Student Award or applying directly to programs with funding from US universities. The event focused on specific topics such as the admission procedure, types of programs, university selection, the application package and funding.

It was also an occasion for the participants to learn more on the online and direct resources and services provided by the Fulbright Educational Advising Center, which is part of EducationUSA network and offers guidance to high school students, undergraduates and graduates planning to study in the U.S. Graduate Admissions Trainings @ FEAC On Tuesday, April 1, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center hosted the fourth session of Graduate Admissions, with special focus on the essays required by U.S. universities for admissions. The session, hosting over 20 participants, had as special guests U.S. Fulbright Grantee Anna Sherod and Romanian Fulbright Alumni Felix Zaharia and Daniela Calciu who discussed their personal essays and gave the participants an insight into their writing process. The session also focused on guidelines for writing a good essay, with particular examples, as well as tips for the writing process, from our speakers. The event concluded with a Q&A session which offered further details to the participants.

When prospective graduate students are thinking about applying to the US for study, the process can seem lengthy and complicated at first. The role of the graduate application package, personal statement, and more were discussed at today’s graduate program overview session at the Fulbright Educational Advising Center/FEAC. The session on March 25th was lead by current American Fulbrighter, Anna Sherod, and 12 prospective applicants had the opportunity to discuss the US admissions process and do some interactive brainstorming about their personal statements. This session was the third in a series of five sessions designed to answer important questions for Romanian prospective graduate students, in partnership with Education USA and the Romanian Fulbright Commission.

Presentation of FEAC/EducationUSA Services for Romanian Students at the American Corner Bucharest In March, the American Corner in Bucharest, twenty-two high school students attended an inspirational information session presented by the Fulbright Educational Advising Center/FEAC together with current American Fulbrighter Anna Sherod, Pepperdine University. At the beginning of the program, FEAC/Education USA representatives gave a presentation of the online and direct services and resources provided by the Educational Advising Center of the Romanian U.S. Fulbright Commission to all its visitors. They also answered common questions about the US admissions process, including the recurring queries: “Will volunteer hours help me get in?”; “What does volunteerism mean to 18-year-old Romanian students?”

Students from “Transilvania” University of Brasov find out about Study Opportunities in the U.S. March 12, the Fulbright Educational Advising Center/FEAC of the Romanian U.S. Fulbright Commission gave a presentation about graduate school admissions and Fulbright grant opportunities to students of Transilvania University of Brasov (UNITBV). The presentation was organized with the support of the International Relations Office of UNITBV and took place at the Multicultural Center of Transilvania University of Brașov.

Fulbright Educational Advising Center – EducationUSA News FEAC at the Romanian International Book Fairs—RIUF— in Bucharest...

On March 15 and 16, FEAC took part in the most prominent educational fair in SE Europe, the Romanian Int’l University Fair/RIUF, in Bucharest. Continuing a long tradition of strategic partnership with the Romanian Int’l University Fair, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission and its EducationUSA Romania admissions services were again present at this year’s edition of the Fair. Information on Fulbright programs and advising on study in the U.S. in general were provided at the Fulbright booth and during a presentation on U.S. study opportunities for both undergrads and grads. During the fair we benefited from the support of three U.S. Fulbright grantees at our booth: also present were former and current FEAC interns as well as Fulbright staff, all on hand to promote U.S. education. The two-days event proved successful, with over 280 people stopping by, asking questions and learning more about all the free services the Advising Center offers in order to support them in the application process.

... and Iasi At the RIUF in Iasi on March 20th, many high schoolers and university students interested in studying in the States patronized the Fulbright stand. 200 visitors came bustling through and inundated Corina Danaila, Director of the Romanian Program and Ioanida Costache, U.S. Fulbright grantee with inquiries.

They were encouraged to take advantage of the resources offered by Education USA via the Fulbright Educational Advising Center.

... the Fulbright Commission visits Cluj The Fulbright Educational Advising Center carried out two events in Cluj designed for students at the graduate and undergraduate level. The first presentation took place at Babes-Bolyai University and targeted students interested in graduate study opportunities. The participants received information about Education USA’s services and resources and about the opportunity to apply for a Fulbright Student Award for masters and research programs in the U.S. Special guest, Joe Dobson, Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Babes-Bolyai University, greeted the students with a comparison between the Romanian and American education systems.

The second event, held at the American Corner Cluj-Napoca at the Country Library, was aimed at high school students interested in completing their Bachelor’s degree in the United States. Ioanida Costache, Fulbright Research Grantee, helped answer questions about the application process to undergraduate colleges and universities and offered the students a first-hand account of the liberal arts education experience. The high schoolers, undergraduates and graduated students from Cluj had the chance to visit us at the Fulbright stand at the Romanian International University Fair, which took place at Casa Studentilor on March 18th. Corina Danaila gave a third presentation concerning both undergrad and graduate studies in the U.S. to a packed room of eager students.
