¬ trains 철도 There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Subway”, and “JR”. The subway links the two city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Airport. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel outside Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima. 후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테츠 전철’ ‘지하철’ ‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타, 텐진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘ 니시테츠 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸, 가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나 신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.

Board using the middle doors and get off using the front door. Pay as you get off. 버스 뒷문으로 타고, 앞쪽의 문으로 내린다. 운임은 내릴 때 지불.
How to ride 버스 타는 방법 ● Check the destination on the front and side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via the center doors. ● If paying cash, take a ticket as you board. If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the sensor, ticket not required. ● Bus stops and fees are displayed on the monitor next to a driver. The fee appears under the ticket number. ● Fees are displayed on the monitor above the driver. Match your ticket number to get your fee. ● Push the stop button to alert the driver that you want to get off at the next stop. ● Drop the fee and your ticket into the box next to the driver and get off from the front door. If you need change, drop cash into the box next to the driver. When you are using nimoca, wave your card above the sensor. ● 버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠 있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가 오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다 ● 현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에 정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을 때에는 승차 구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이 경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음). ● 정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로 운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권 번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다. ● 목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고 안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다. ● 운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의 운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할 때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지 않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를 갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에 카드를 터치한다.

opular in Japan since the 8th century, soba noodles are firmly recognized as a national dish. Preparing soba is an art in itself, and people train for years to master it. There are many long-established soba restaurants in Fukuoka, but one of the most outstanding is Sangamori, which features an open kitchen, so
you can watch as your noodles are prepared. Despite its stylish interior, it’s quite reasonably-priced, with plain seiro soba starting from
산가모리소바 나라시대 전부터 먹었다는 소바. 관동지방에서는 서서먹는 소바가 여행객에게 인기 있으며 외국인들은 소바에 대해 높은 관심을 보이고 있다. 그런 일본의 대표적 요리는 역시 손으로 직접 만든 음식을 맛보고 싶을 터. 노점의 소바 전문점도 좋지만 오픈 키친의 ‘ 산가모리소바’는 어떨까? 언뜻 보면 들어가기 어려워 보이지만 세이로소바(600엔) 등 적당한 가격으로 손수 만든 소바를 먹을 수 있다. 차진 얇은 소바는 홋카이도산의 메밀가루를 8할, 밀가루를 2할 사용한 ‘니하치소바'로, 정성껏 만든 츠유는 진한 간장의 매운맛을 살린 관동풍이다. 소바가 메인인 런치타임이 끝나고 디너타임이 되면 메인이 철판구이로 바뀐다.

Such delicious soba noodles are the mainstay of the lunch menu here, but the dinner menu is lead by an array of tasty teppanyaki dishes, expertly prepared right in front of you. The manager, who trained at both a soba restaurant and a popular teppanyaki restaurant in Tokyo, recommends enjoying some teppanyaki and a few drinks first, before finishing the meal with some noodles. angladeshi Curry Hyder is another feather in Fukuoka’s already broad, international culinary cap. Chef Hyder started out serving his curry at events, where it proved to be so successful that he decided to open his own restaurant. Located in an old apartment building in Kego, Hyder’s self-titled establishment now cooks up a wide variety of South Asian delights. Most popular is his “herbal curry”, which is made according to an old family recipe. Not overly spicy, it contains a subtle blend of 16 different spices and herbs, many of which are renowned for their wholesome and restorative properties. Further health benefits are ensured by Hyder’s insistence on using produce free of pesticides and artificial additives. He also runs Ketoy.jp, a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating
poverty in Bangladesh. Fair trade handicrafts and colorfully dyed scarves are on sale in the restaurant, with a portion of takings going towards helping the needy. A chance to enjoy a delicious, healthy curry and do a good deed? Sounds like an opportunity too good to miss!
방글라데시. 그 이름을 자주 듣기는 해도 어떤 나라인지 아는 사람은 적지 않을까? 갠지스강의 하류, 인도의 오른편에 위치하며 일본처럼 쌀이 주식이다. 유명한 요리는 카레. 그런 남아시아 국가의 문화를 피부로 느낄 수 있는 가게가 케고의 오래된 아파트에 있다. 간판 메뉴는 방글라데시 출신의 하이달씨가 모친의 맛을 재현한 한방카레. 그리 맵진 않지만 먹을수록 신기하게 땀이 난다. 대사를 촉진시키는 생강, 건위약으로도 쓰이는 커민 등 현지에서 조달하는 스파이스&허브를 16종이나 사용한다고 하는 하이달씨. 화학조미료와 첨가물은 사용하지 않고 무농약 야채를 사용한다. 원래는 이벤트 때만 만들었던 카레를 평소에도 제공하는 데는 이유가 있다. 하이달씨는 방글라데시의 가난한 사람들을 원조하는 특정비영리 활동법인 KETOY.jp의 이사장으로 활동한다. 산뜻하게 물들인 숄 등 방글라데시의 수공예품을 중간착취 없이 공정무역을 통해 제 값으로 판매. 매상의 일부는 현지 아이들의 교육 지원 등에 활용되는 시스템이다. 맛있는 카레를 먹고, 잡화도 구경하며 방글라데시라는 나라를 알아가는 것은 어떨까.

onansen (“South-of-the-castle line”) is one of Fukuoka’s more interestingly named streets, and is so-called because it was previously a streetcar route. Nowadays, Yakuin, the area spreading out from around Jonansen is one of Fukuoka’s most desirable highclass residential districts. A short walk from Tenjin, it is also home to numerous office buildings, thanks to its convenient transport links via the Nanakuma subway line and the Nishitetsu train and bus services. This month, we take a closer look at what makes Yakuin such a great place to work, rest and play. Since so many people live and work in Yakuin, it buzzes with activity every day of the week. The area boasts many useful shops, such as the household goods store B·B·B Potters and the Nishitetsu Store supermarket, which is inside Yakuin station. Various local businesses also collaborate to run area-wide events such as the Yakuin Tenten flea market, the Yakuin Salud bar-hopping festival and the Yakuin Ichome Udon Festival. As well as being tremendous fun, these popular events are also a great opportunity to discover a new favorite shop, bar or restaurant. You may have wondered why the area is called Yakuin (“medical institution”). The most commonly accepted theory is that the name came about after 8th Century scholar Kibi no Makibi cultivated herb gardens and set up a seyakuin (“free medical institution”) in the area. Later, it became a popular area with Edo Period doctors and to this day is home to many hospitals and clinics. This gives the area a sense of connection to the past, even though on the surface it has fully embraced modernity. With the continual opening of

Kooza Cirque de Soleil The latest Cirque de Soleil show is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza”, meaning treasure box. The story follows a boy named Innocent, who seeks a place where he can be himself. Since 1987, this meet has attracted worldwide professional runners. It also serves as a heat for the Japanese International Students Cross Country and Asia Cross Country Championships. General public can race the same course in the Citizens Cross Country (advance registration required).

This monthly event gives exchange students a chance to learn about Japanese culture. A lecture by a local businessman or academic is followed by a talk from the young people on their cross-cultural experiences. The intercultural mixer afterwards is a great chance to meet people.

◊ get Familiar with Hakata by eating! Fukuoka Fukutabi is a hands-on program produced by Fukuoka City that helps you to get more familiar with Fukuoka and uncover the hidden charms of the city. The limited winter programs are Hakata Saba-zukushi Course (“Enjoy Hakata mackerel” course) in which you can enjoy fresh raw mackerel, one of the specialties of Hakata, and Umai Hakata Marugoto Shoku-taiken (“Eat all the delicious specialties of Hakata” course) which includes seven Hakata specialties. The Fukuoka Challenge Walk is a 25-kilometer walking event from Maizuru Park to Shikanoshima. It is not a race, so anyone can join and enjoy at your comfortable walking pace. Disabled persons and pre-school children must be accompanied. The fee is ¥1,400, and ¥900 for the disabled and children under 18. All Fukuoka City libraries will temporarily close to reorganize their books and to inspect equipment. The Wajiro, Hakata, Chuo, Jonan, and Nishi libraries will close from February 6 ~ 16, and the Higashi, Hakata Minami, Minami, Sawara, and Seibu branches from February 20 ~ March 1.
