“Jakarta will sink in 2030 “ Ubaidillah - Executive Director of the Indonesian Environmental Forum (Wahli)

Based on his observation, Ubai-

dillah said that the sinking of Jakarta is caused by Jakarta’s open green spaces, which is reduced continously, and currently remained 9.6 percent of space from 661.52 square kilometres of space. He said, the government should take into account the construction of building structures which were not complemented with ecological balance studies. Hadi Subiyanto, the actor cast in the role of a spiritual guru to Elizabeth Gilbert, the part portrayed by Roberts, told the press: “Julia Roberts often didn’t remember her lines and did a lot of improvisation. This made me confused, because I memorized the last word of each line from Julia’s dialogue so I would know when to begin my dialogue.” Despite Julia Robert’s lapses of memory and a resulting large number of retakes, the Indonesian actor and music educator enjoyed playing opposite the Academy award-winning actress. According to News Agency Antara, Hadi’s acting skills received praise from both Roberts and Ketut Liyer, the Ubud-based spiritual healer he portrays in the film.

Editorial

Jasper, the manager of the Cazbar, turned his sleepy head slowly in our direction. In the past hour that I was talking to this journalist from LA, he had been quietly doing his own stuff on his computer. My LA visitor was Griselda who, together with her Dutch cameraman Amando, were in Indonesia to do the finishing touches on a book about the Belanda Hitam, or Black Dutchmen. Sitting at the long table in Cazbar, we had been talking about Endjie, my exwaitress in BuGils, who looked like an African and who had been the reason for my investigation into her African roots some years before. Griselda talked about her own search of descendants of the 3000 Ghana slaves that were turned into Dutch KNIL soldiers in the first half of the 19th century. For the past 5 years she had managed to trace back some of these black KNIL descendants, who nowadays were shattered all over the world. A very few descendants were still here in Indonesia, mostly in the region of Semarang or Purworedjo, where there is still a Kampung Africa.

wards. “But the Belanda Hitam where from Ghana and Nigeria, the west coast. They were not Zulu’s”. Jasper shrugged his shoulders and wanted to continue his work at this computer. “Where was your grandfather born?”, Griselda asked in anxiety. “At the island Nias”, he answered. Griselda fell back for the second time, this time with her hands in front of her face and gassing for air. We were all clearly shocked, except Jasper. “From Nias!? That is where some the African soldiers were stationed! Oh my god.... This cannot be true!”. Griselda shrieked out. Jasper, now slightly surprised, looked up to Griselda, with a grin on his face. “I have a picture of him here on my laptop. Look, here he is, my

Griselda is still in Indonesia, rewriting

the last chapter of her book Black Skin, Orange Heart, that will now feature Jasper as a direct descendant from the imported Africans to the Indies. After some research in the past week it turned out that he is not a descendant from just one side, but two!

“I believe I am a Zulu...”, he said calmly. Griselda and I stopped in our conversation. “I am sorry?” grandpa Den Dekker!”. He moved the computer towards Griselda, who was still white faced sitting with her hands for her mouth. “Oh my, God...”, she repeated, “Den Dekker is the one African I have not been able to trace any descendants from.. This is scary.... This cannot be true....”. The picture of the old Den Dekker, Jaspers’ grandfather who had died a few years earlier, showed a weary old-but indeed very dark man. The African KNIL had been given Dutch

I had known Jasper for almost 15 years,

and as far as I knew, he was a typical Dutch boy from the city of Arnhem. And although he was known for sleeping a lot, who would ever believe he was a long lost brother of Khofi Annan!? “I believe I am a Zulu...”, he said calmly.

Griselda and I stopped in our conversation. “I am sorry?”, I turned to Jasper, who looked just as sleepy as always. “Serious. I sincerely believe I have African blood”, he strengthened his earlier statement. My mouth fell open, Griselda fell back in her chair. Jasper showed a grin on his face and continued: “No really! My grandfather was born in Indonesia, and the rumor in the family was that he was from African descent, but nobody ever gave me details...”. Griselda bowed for-

names on the trip from Africa to the Dutch Indies and a short course in army training. It is an interesting part of history not many people know about. And here we have one managing Dutch bars in Indonesia!

BARTELE GALLERY above Cazbar After this amazing discovery, he is

already adjusting the music in Cazbar towards Black Soul music, and thinking of setting up a business in hangmats. He is happy he can now use the excuse of his ancestry for his sleeping habits. On top of Griselda’s extraordinary dis-

covery at the Stammtisch (German word for something like “regular’s table” or “regular get-together”) in Cazbar, I found - by complete coincidence - a lithograph printed in 1840, of an African soldier in the Dutch Indies. I was looking for some frames in a print-shop in Kemang and just pulled a drawer, when this African soldier in KNIL uniform was smiling to me. Griselda had never seen this particular print before, obviously a rare item. It felt like I had hit jackpot. The print is now proudly on display in Bartele Gallery (4th floor above the Cazbar). Not for sale. Bartele.

News Indonesia improves its often criticised visa on arrival system

Indonesian gamblers now go to Singapore Source: blog.indahnesia.com

At long last (and almost three years after VP Jusuf Kalla first announced it), it seems that Indonesia’s Immigration Department has listened to the complaints of international tourists regarding the visa on arrival scheme. Source: Indonesiamatters.com Many complaints centered

on its short duration (maximum 30 days) - which made travel to more remote parts of the archipelago virtually impossible. Some tourists also suggested very long queues at airports to buy them was not exactly the most positive or welcoming first impression of Indonesia, particularly after a long flight.

Improvement #1:

Visas On Arrival Up To 60 Days. As reported in The Jakarta Post, starting 26 January 2010 tourists can now have their $US25 30-day tourist visas extended by another 30 days. However, the details are not yet forthcoming from the Department of Immigration about where/how this could be done, nor how much it would cost. It suggests tourists - like their expat brethren - may need to use an immigration agent/fixer/broker to make it happen in a reasonable period of time. It was also announced that the $US10 7-day visa would no longer be offered.

SINGAPORE - After Batam closed down it’s

Improvement #2:

Save Time, Buy Your Visa On The Plane. The same newspaper has also reported that Indonesia’s national airline Garuda Indonesia also recently introduced a new visa service at Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan. It allows visitors to avoid long queues at the airport’s visa counters and buy their visas on arrival before they arrive, i.e. before they board the plane. It is not known whether this service will also be rolled out to airports in the 63 other countries eligible for VOAs, or to other airlines flying to Indonesia. However, as Tourism Minister Mr Jero Wacik recently discovered on an impromptu visit to the international terminal at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport, it would probably be a good idea.

More than 2.2 million tourists for Bali is difficult Source: blog.indahnesia.com DENPASAR - Bali set a new record of

Oliver Libutzki, the regional market

foreign tourist arrivals with 2.2 million in 2009, but local and international tourism industry players doubt the island can equal or break the mark in the future. Ida Bagus Sidharta Putra of Santrian Group tours and travel network said Saturday Bali was lucky to receive foreign tourists who shifted their destination from Thailand due to a protracted political crisis there last year.

management director of Agoda, a Bangkok-based international tours and travel agent, warned Bali of the recovery of tourism industry in Thailand and Malaysia. Thailand, he said, has registered 60,000 early bookings per day. He said traffic congestions and dirty beaches were among the problems Bali had to address in order to attract more foreign tourists.

semi-allowed casino’s after they changed governors there - talking about stable investment climate - Singapore opened it first casino yesterday. The main target? Millions of Indonesians with money to spare that would like to gamble a little but don’t want to travel too far to do so. Yesterday - on Chinese New Year - the

first casino in the city-state was officially opened on the resort of Sentosa Island. Resorts World Sentosa, owned by the Malaysian Genting group, is the first of only two casino’s that will be opened in the little country. This should bring in millions of new tourists. A second casino, Marina Bay Sands, will be opened in April and is owned by Las Vegas Sands. “Because of these new casino’s in Singa-

pore, an entirely new market is opened up for Southeast Asia. A new market where most likely billions - dollar’s that is, not Rupiah’s - can be made,” said Jonathan Galaviz, analyst in Las Vegas. Many Indonesians can now go to a casino just around the corner in Singapore, so the ever important traveling time is greatly reduced. Of course the Indonesian Council of

Islamic Scholars (MUI) just had to react on it. They said that gambling is a big no-no, complete sin and 110% haram for Islamic Indonesians. The first Indonesian who will realize this when he has just placed a bet will most likely be publicly stoned or something. All the others are now able to place a bet without having someone watching over them, telling them they are doing something that is ‘not allowed’.

Convicted Bali Bomb Builder Writes to Indonesian President for Sentence Reduction Source: thejakartaglobe.com A terrorist convicted of building the

bombs that killed 202 people on the resort island of Bali in 2002 has asked Indonesian’s president to reduce his life sentence, an official said Tuesday. Sarjiyo, who is known by a single name or by the alias of Zaenal Abidin, recently sent a letter to the Denpasar District Court requesting that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono set a fixed sentence for him to serve, court official Posma Nainggolan said. The same court sentenced him in 2004 for helping assemble the bombs and planning the attacks on two nightclubs on Oct. 12, 2002.

Participants were greeted with applause, but also taunts when they stepped on the catwalk during a Miss Transvestite Aceh pageant on Saturday. The pageant was organised by transgender rights organisation Putro Sejati Aceh to select a representative for the national contest and to campaign on transgender issues. ”Transvestites are marginalised. We demand equal rights,” said Sherly, who chairs Putro Sejati Aceh.

Sharia law in Aceh placed them in a difficult position. The pageant provoked a strong local reaction from provincial and religious leaders. “We condemn the pageant. Among the dead were 152 foreigners. The attacks were allegedly funded by alQaida and carried out by the Southeast Asian terror network Jemaah Islamiyah. Sarjiyo, a 39-year-old Muslim convert, could have been sentenced to death. Three accomplices were executed by firing squad in 2008. Nainggolan, the court official, said Sarjiyo’s letter and file will be sent to the Indonesian Supreme Court, which will forward the letter to the president. The clemency process can take years and most requests are rejected.

More limitations for importing films to Indonesia Source: blog.indahnesia.com JAKARTA - A United States trade representative to Indonesia, Demetrios Marantis, has expressed his concern over a new decree that is currently considered by the Indonesian government. This decree will further restrict regulations over imports of

foreign films to Indonesia. Marantis said that if the decree was accepted, it could disrupt bilateral relationship. “The decree will severely restrict the availability of foreign films in Indonesia harming stakeholders including Indonesian cinemas that want to dis-

play foreign movies and Indonesian patrons that want to watch them. The only beneficiaries appear to be the one or two firms being granted an oligopoly on replicating films in Indonesia.” Demetrios Marantis, United States trade representative to Indonesia.

A PRINT IN DETAIL - Waterboarding Practises by the Dutch Waterboarding Practises by the Dutch – The Amboyna Massacre The debate over the simulated-drowning technique may be new, but the practice is not. It predates the Inquisition and has been used, off and on, around the world ever since. The other technique — the one more widely used today — involves choking the victim by filling their throat with a steady stream of water — a sort of “slow-motion drowning” that was perfected by Dutch traders in 1622. They used it against their British rivals in the East Indies, who were suspected of plotting to capture the Dutch headquarters in Amboyna, East Indies. Wrote one observer about the Amboyna tortures and massacre: “They bound a cloth about his neck and

Its use was first documented in the 14th

century, when it was known variously as “water torture,” the “water cure” or tormenta de toca — a phrase that refers to the thin piece of cloth placed over the victim’s mouth. Waterboarding actually refers to

two different interrogation techniques. One involves pumping water directly into the stomach. This creates intense pain. It feels like your organs are on fire.

face so close that little or no water could go by. That done, they poured the water softly upon his head until the cloth was full, up to the mouth and nostrils, and somewhat higher; so that he couldn’t draw breath, but he must withal suck-in the water…which being still continued to be poured in softly, forced all his inward parts, came out of his nose, ears and eyes, and often as it were stifling and choaking him, at length took away his breath, and brought him to a to a swounce or fainting.” In one case, the torturer applied water three or four times successively until the victim’s “body was swollen twice or thrice as big as before,

his cheeks like great bladders, and his eyes staring and strutting out beyond his forehead”. It was the result of the intense rivalry

between the East India companies of England and the United Provinces in the spice trade and remained a source of tension between the two nations until late in the 17th century. The annexation of the Dutch colony New Amsterdam (New York) was justified with a rather farfetched reference to the Amboyna Massacre. Waterboarding may be widespread,

but it has not been used everywhere. There’s no evidence that either the Nazis or the Soviets used the technique. These regimes weren’t concerned about public opinion, and so they often used harsher methods that left permanent scars or killed their victims. If anything, waterboarding has been an interrogation technique preferred by the world’s democracies. More about the Amboyna Massa-
