WELCOME TO TRANSFER ORIENTATION Dear New ‘Noles, Welcome to Orientation at Florida State University! Transfer Orientation is designed to help upper-division transfer students with 60 or more credits to transition into the FSU community. Through this Virtual Orientation experience, you will be viewing presentations and information specifically designed to help you navigate the university as a transfer student.

Transitions are an integral part of life. Your transition to being a student at FSU is a major step, and we believe Orientation will serve as the beginning of your transition into becoming a part of the rich heritage that is Florida State University.

“Holopaw” is a Seminole Creek word that means “pathways.” The Holopaw Transfer Guide is designed to help you as you begin to find your own pathway at Florida State University. In addition to your Orientation schedule, this guide contains information about the many involvement opportunities and campus resources available to you as you transition to FSU. Our hope is that the Holopaw Transfer Guide will be useful for you throughout your Orientation experience and beyond.

Within this guide, you will also find the names and photos of the 2020 Orientation Leaders. Orientation Leaders are current Florida State University students who will serve as your guides to campus. These students are experienced leaders on campus and are here to assist you in your transition to FSU, so please feel free to ask them anything!

We hope you enjoy Orientation and, more importantly, that you leave the experience knowing that transferring to Florida State was the right decision! TRANSFER ORIENTATION SCHED ULE WEEK BEFORE SESSION Virtual Orientation Modules

New Student & Family Programs will email you (at your myFSU email address) the week before your scheduled Orientation session with the information needed to access the Virtual Orientation modules. You will have the entire week until 2:00 PM the day before your Orientation session to

Prepare for Academic Advising Once you have completed your Virtual Orientation modules, New Student & Family Programs will email you (at your myFSU email address) with the information needed to access your academic advising meeting via Zoom on the day of your Orientation session. This email will also include the information to access your Small Group session and Course Registration Labs.

DAY OF SESSION 10:00 am / 12:00 pm

Academic Advising It’s time to plan out your first semester at FSU! Starting at 10:00 AM or 12:00 PM on the day of your Orientation session, you will meet with academic advisors in your College/Major using Zoom. (Make sure you are using FSU Zoom, and test it beforehand!) Your advisors will recommend the best classes for you based on your program of study. Make sure you bring a copy of your unofficial transcripts, and make sure you do not have any holds on your myFSU account that might prevent you from registering for classes (the Orientation hold will be lifted at 3:00 PM).

‘Nole to ‘Nole Small Group Jump start your New ‘Nole experience and prepare for your first year at FSU by connecting with Orientation Leaders via Zoom. After your advising meeting, join us for this small group session where you can get to know current student leaders and connect with your fellow classmates!

Registration Module After your advising and small group sessions, make sure you log back into the Virtual Orientation platform to complete the Registration module. This module includes information to help you as you register for classes using Schedule Assistant.

Course Registration After completing the Registration module, you will be able to register for classes via your myFSU account.

3:30 – 5:00 pm

Course Registration Labs (Optional) Orientation Leaders and Undergraduate Studies staff will be available via Zoom to assist you with any questions you might have during course registration.

Once you have completed course registration, you are officially done with Orientation!

2020 ORIENTATION LEADERS The Orientation Leaders are current undergraduate students at Florida State University who were selected through a competitive application process and trained as campus experts to assist students and families in their transition to FSU. These students mentor new ‘Noles in academics, student involvement, FSU history and traditions, and community expectations. Orientation Leaders take on the responsibility of welcoming over 8,000 students and 10,000 family members into the FSU family and showing them what it means to live the Seminole Creed.

What is your favorite FSU tradition?

My favorite FSU tradition is Homecoming. Florida State’s Homecoming is a week filled with festivities. This week gives times for students, staff, alumni, and the community to show their love for Florida State. Events include a concert, talent show, carnival, pep rally, parade and much more. The week is filled with so much love, joy, and happiness. It’s definitely a time when the Florida State community remember why they have such a love for Florida State.

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY

HISTORY & TRADITIONS

Florida State University was founded as the West Florida Seminary in 1851 and began operating in 1857. It started out on the hill where the Westcott Building now stands. In 1909, the name of the college was changed to Florida State College for Women. After World War II, the demand for higher education institutions grew and men were brought back to the campus in 1946. On May 15, 1947 the institution returned to coeducational status, thus changing its name to The Florida State University.

Wondering what all of the symbols you keep seeing represent?

In the early 1900s, Seminole women developed a new decorative technique, now commonly known as patchwork. Patchwork was rapidly adopted as a standard way to embellish the traditionally vibrant clothing of the Seminoles.

FSU and its Athletics program have incorporated these symbols and the three you will see most often are Fire, Arrow, and Man on Horse.

What is your favorite FSU tradition?

My favorite tradition at FSU is the Senior Ring Ceremony. I think that it’s so amazing having all the seniors together to get their senior rings, and then at 1851 military time (6:51), everyone dips their rings into Westcott Fountain in honor of the year 1851, when the university was founded.

The stadium opened in 1950 and was named for Doak Campbell, who was president during the transition from Florida State College for Women to Florida State University.

In 2004, the field was named after football coach Bobby Bowden, which made the official name Bobby Bowden Field at Doak S. Campbell Stadium.

The history of integration at Florida State University is immortalized in the Integration Statue on Legacy Walk. The statue depicts Maxwell Courtney, the first African American to graduate from FSU; Fred Flowers, the first African American to wear an FSU athletic uniform; and Doby Flowers, Florida State’s first African American homecoming princess.

Students have the opportunity to receive their class ring from President Thrasher and then dip their ring into Westcott Fountain at exactly 6:51 PM--18:51 military time — as a nod to our institution’s history.

VIRES, ARTES, MORES The seal of Florida State University incorporates three blazing torches, symbolizing the fire given to man by the Greek god Prometheus to enable humanity’s progress as a civilization. These torches represent the purpose of the University: to pass on knowledge from generation to generation.

The torch on the left, Vires, signifies strength of all kinds – physical, moral, and intellectual.

Artes, the torch in the center, denotes the knowledge we acquire that transcends skills and embraces the appreciation of beauty.

The final torch, Mores, encompasses customs, character and tradition.

Through these three values, the physical, mental, and moral growth of the Florida State University student is fostered.

The Center – Center for Leadership and Social Change

Focuses on providing resources and opportunities for leadership education, identity development and community engagement.

ABBREVIATIONS ASLC – Askew Student Life Cinema Building in the heart of campus that houses the on-campus movie theatre and includes a coffee shop, cyber cafe, and video/board games.

CARE – Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement CARE provides preparation, orientation, and academic support programming for students who are among the first in their family to attend college and may face unique challenges in college because of educational or economic circumstances.

FSL – Department of Fraternity & Sorority Life

Oversees 40+ social fraternities and sororities, which are values-based organizations focused on promoting leadership, scholarship, brotherhood/ sisterhood, and service.

& Sorority Drop/Add Life – oversees 55 social fraternities and so A period of time during scholarship, the first four daysbrotherhood/sisterhood of classes where students can and service. promoting leadership, adjust their class schedule by adding or dropping classes. Landis Green

The large green space in front of Landis Hall used for programming, fun, and relaxation.

The Leach – Bobby E. Leach Student Recreation Center

FSU’s largest campus recreation facility. Students will find cardio and strength equipment, an indoor track and courts, as well as a pool and spa inside the Leach.

Legacy Walk

A brick pathway used to give a historical, self-guided tour of the FSU campus that focuses on the University’s history, architecture, artworks, and green spaces.

myFSU

The online “portal” for all student resources. The myFSU portal connects students to Canvas, their myFSU email account, student financials, academic resources, health resources, campus life, etc.

The Rez – FSU Reservation

An outdoor recreation area free to FSU students including kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, etc.

Strozier/Stroz/Club Stroz – Strozier Library

The main library on campus. Strozier Library gets the nickname “Club Stroz” during final exams because students spend all night there studying. Study rooms are located inside for students to rent.

Thagard – Thagard Building

Building that provides office space for the Center for Academic Retention & Enhancement (CARE), Student Organizations & Involvement (SOI), and the Student Government Association.

Welcome FSU

FSU’s “welcome week,” a week full of fun events and opportunities for involvement with things like free food, performers, and an involvement fair held at the beginning of every semester.

OL – Orientation Leader

These students mentor new ‘Noles in academics, student involvement, FSU history and traditions, and community expectations. Orientation Leaders take on the responsibility of welcoming students and family members annually into the FSU family and showing them what it means to live the Seminole Creed.

RA – Resident Assistant A current FSU student who lives and works within the residence hall. RAs coordinate activities, inform students about university norms and expectations, serve as a resource for students, and help build a community atmosphere, while enforcing community standards and university policies.

OAS – Office of Accessibility Services The resource on campus where students can get help and accommodations if they have a disability.

SGA – Student Government Association The governing body of students at Florida State University, providing students with a voice on campus and allocating funds for university programs and services.

SSB – Student Services Building Home to the Office of Accessibility Services and reservable meeting space on campus.

UCA, UCB, UCC, UCD – University Center A, B, C, D Buildings connected to Doak Campbell Stadium housing important resources like Admissions, the Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid, the Department of Student Support & Transitions, the Dedman School of Hospitality, the College of Social Work, and much more. ACADEMIC RESOURCES 1. TRANSFER STUDENT SERVICES 850-645-7890 transferstudents.fsu.edu Transfer Student Services here at FSU is a valuable resource for transfer students. With 25% of FSU’s undergraduate population being transfer students, Transfer Student Services offers assistance with pre-enrollment, transition, and academic endeavors. Additionally, there are multiple workshops, events, and on-campus opportunities offered through this department at FSU.

ACADEMIC CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE 850-645-9151 ace.fsu.edu The Academic Center for Excellence is a university learning center that assists students in developing successful study skills and habits that will allow them to excel at FSU and beyond. This resource offers a variety of tutoring options, is home to study rooms for students, and supplies students with additional study tools on their website.

Students can learn how to apply for aid, learn more about the types of financial aid that are offered, and use resources through the office to budget and plan the cost of your education. If there are any questions or concerns about navigating financial aid, the Office of Financial Aid is here to help!

4. UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES 850-644-2706 lib.fsu.edu FSU is home to nine different libraries across campus, each with a substantial amount of volumes, databases, eBooks, and electronic journals. Through University Libraries, students also have access to a variety of study rooms, tutoring opportunities in several subjects, and the ability to rent equipment and software. Additionally, each library will have its own unique, individual services or resources which allows for a personalized experience no matter where you go!

THE LEACH The Dr. Bobby E. Leach Student Recreation Center, located on the westside of campus, is our main facility with full cardio and strength areas, fitness studios, basketball & racquet sports courts, indoor track, pool and spa.

THE FMC The Fitness & Movement Clinic, located on the 2nd floor of the Coburn Health & Wellness Center, has a smaller selection of cardio and strength equipment along with our F45 fitness studio.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

My favorite place on campus is Landis Green because there is always movement there no matter the time of day. Students play frisbee and other activities when the weather is nice. Some students even bring their dogs out in order to run around and greet fellow students.
