Message from the Dean Are we educating doctors that will meet the medical needs of our community today and in the future? The FSU College of Medicine has strived to educate students from Florida with the hopes that they will Dr. Paul McLeod eventually practice in our communities. And while it has taken some time for our alumni to get through their various residency programs, we are starting to see the return on our educational investment. Only 40 percent of our students complete their residency training in the state of Florida, but a full 60 percent end up in

our state to practice medicine. From our campus alone, six former students have returned to establish their medical practice and several students from other regional campuses have chosen to live, work and raise their families in our beautiful community. Those of you who have been with us for several years will likely remember the names: Kara Brooks and Brian Gibson from the Class of 2006, Anne-Marie Whitlock (2008), Melissa Kozakiewicz (2010), Halei Wong (2010) and Tiffany (Vollmer) Ramos (2011). As former students they were mentored by our regional campus faculty. Now they have returned to join their former teachers as peers and to continue the teaching legacy that allowed them to reach their professional goals.

We were proud to have Eric represent The College of Medicine. The 2015 FMA Poster Symposium is Aug.1st in Orlando.

Pat M. Woodward Legacy Scholarship Miranda Mack was awarded the Pat M. Woodward Legacy Scholarship on Dec. 3 at the Quincy Country and Golf Club. This scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving third- and fourth-year College of Medicine students who are committed to practicing pediatrics or family medicine in underserved communities in Gadsden County, or elsewhere in North Florida upon completion of residency. Dr. Woodward was Miranda’s pediatrician in Quincy, and she was honored to receive the scholarship. Miranda hopes to return to Gadsden County to practice family medicine after residency.

Campus Changes The Pensacola Regional Campus has enjoyed a highly dedicated, skilled and stable group of clerkship directors for the past 12 years. The original nine clerkship directors still occupy those positions This summer two retired. Please join us in thanking Drs. Donna Jacobi (left, bottom) and Jeff Chicola (left, top) for their 12 years of service to our students. Both of them helped develop our original clerkships and have done a masterful job of implementing the curriculum at our regional campus. Both have a passion for medical education and it shows in their work. We cannot thank them enough. They will be missed. Replacing Dr. Jacobi will be Dr. Dennis Mayeaux who moved from his role as clerkship director for family medicine into the same role in geriatrics. Dr. Mayeaux was recently promoted to clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Rural Health. He is an exemplary educator, and we can look for him to continue the legacy that was created by Dr. Jacobi for this mission-based clerkship. Our new clerkship director for family medicine is Dr. Hillary Hultstrand, who has been on our clerkship faculty since 2009. She has consistently received accolades from the students and Dr. Mayeaux during this time. In addition, she has assumed a number of leadership roles with the Escambia County Medical Society. We believe she is a perfect fit. Our new clerkship director in surgery is Dr. John Tyson who has been a clinical faculty member since the matriculation of our inaugural class in 2003. He is a recipient of our Outstanding Educator Award and a master teacher and mentor in our community-based model of medical education. We are very excited to welcome Drs. Tyson and Hultstrand to the team. With the leadership of all of our clerkship directors and the expertise of our clinical faculty, our program will thrive in the coming years.

Pensacola Alumna Speaks at White Coat Abby Peters, M.D. (formerly Abby Hunter, Class of 2011) was chosen as the guest speaker for the Class of 2018 White Coat Ceremony last August in Tallahassee. She gave a heartfelt speech about the profession of medicine and shared many of her experiences. The entire speech and be viewed at: http://www.med.fsu.edu/# Abby and her husband Greg Peters M.D., completed their third and fourth years of medical training in Pensacola. Our faculty and staff had the privilege of getting to know them while watching them grow through their clinical years. We were present when they chose specialties, made lasting relationships and couples-matched at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston -Salem, North Carolina. We are happy to see them return to Florida to practice medicine. Abby Peters, M.D. is a pediatrician with Tallahassee Pediatrics, and Greg Peters, M.D. is an emergency medicine physician at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The College of Medicine is fortunate to have them return and share their talents as faculty members.

The Medical Educational Council of Pensacola (MECOP), a nationally accredited provider of continuing medical education for more than 29 years, is a proud partner of the Florida State University College of Medicine and its regional campuses. MECOP accredits faculty development CME across the campuses, as well as online modules, grand rounds sessions and programs affiliated with FSU residency hospitals throughout the state. MECOP was also recently part of a pilot study with the American Medical Association that resulted in allowing physician faculty the opportunity to claim CME credit for hours spent teaching and the learning experience that occurs as a result of encounters with students. MECOP also supports the students of the College of Medicine through an annual scholarship donation that is distributed locally to a third- or fourth-year medical student. The annual recipient serves on MECOP’s Board of Directors and takes part in the planning and decision-making for CME programs at FSU and all affiliated organizations – which include hospital CME programs and other academic-based programs. Blakele Bakker was the recent scholarship recipient (pictured here). MECOP looks forward to a new recipient this spring/summer.

Escambia County Medical Society The Escambia County Medical Society (ECMS) in conjunction with Santa Rosa County is a local professional association of physicians that address political, social and economic issues concerning the level and delivery of healthcare for patients and physicians. ECMS is located at the Pensacola Campus in suite B. FSU medical students interested in getting involved receive free membership and can participate in their activities. Also for the past three years ECMS has been awarding the Michael Redmond Scholarship to a fourth-year medical student at the Pensacola campus who is interested in returning to this area to practice medicine. The Class of 2015 ECMS scholarship recipient was Juliana Matthews. The ECMS and their Foundation plan to continue this scholarship for Pensacola College of Medicine students with the creation of a $100,000 scholarship endowment fund. On May 6th ECMS and their Foundation presented the first of two checks for $50,000 to Dean Fogarty and the Florida State University College of Medicine. Dean McLeod and Dean Fogarty were honored to accept the check and appreciate ECMS’s commitment to FSU College of Medicine students. ECMS’s next meeting will be:

Miranda Mack was the keynote speaker for the SSTRIDE Induction Ceremony on Jan. 12. Miranda was a member in high school and has continued to work with the program as a tutor and mentor. Miranda’s speech was titled “Defining Your Success,” in which she challenged the students to define who they are separate from what they do in order to have a better life and career satisfaction. Miranda Mack also made a presentation with Dr. Suzanne Harrison, the education director for family medicine-FSU and Dr. Nicole Bentze, family medicine clerkship director at the Ft. Pierce Campus. “Personal Education Goals: Self-Directed Learning in the Family Medicine Clerkship.” 41st Annual Society of Teachers in Family Medicine (STFM) National Conference on Medical Student Education on Feb. 7, 2015. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists awarded ACOG District XII with the national ACOG Council of District Chairs Service Recognition Award for the district project advocating for increased HPV vaccination awareness. Dr. Julie DeCesare (FSUCOM faculty) chairs the committee, Healthcare for Underserved Women, that developed the project to increase statewide awareness among ACOG fellows on the low rates of vaccination in the state of Florida. Pensacola FSUCOM medical students Blakele Bakker and Geami Britt assisted in this project. The group developed and distributed tools, including slide presentations, posters, and pamphlets, to educate ACOG fellows in Florida about the need for HPV immunization, since Florida ranks 49 out of 50 states in immunization coverage.
