RECEIVES $100M

to Create the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship The Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship will stand alone, offering and greatly expanding the entrepreneurship courses currently taught in the College of Business and making them available to all FSU students.

The announcement followed a meeting of the FSU Board of Trustees, which unanimously approved the name of the new school.

“Gifts of this magnitude have an enormous impact on a university and change the landscape for generations to come,” said Chair Ed Burr. “The Florida State University Board of Trustees is thrilled to approve the naming of this new school, and the entire FSU family is deeply grateful to Jan Moran and The Jim Moran Foundation for their support of entrepreneurial education.”

FSU President John Thrasher called the gift “transformational” and said entrepreneurial education in Florida and across the country will never be the same.

A significant portion of the gift, he said, will continue to fund the Jim Moran Institute for Global

Entrepreneurship, which has a long, 20-year history of serving entrepreneurs and small businesses throughout Florida. The Jim Moran Institute will remain administratively in the FSU College of Business and continue its extensive outreach mission to help bridge real-world entrepreneurship practice with entrepreneurship education provided through the new school.

“At Florida State, we are focusing hard on graduate success,” Thrasher said. “The Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship and the Jim Moran Institute, in conjunction with Florida State University, will become the focal point for collegiate entrepreneurial education and the lifeline for training and assistance to entrepreneurs, small businesses and nonprofits. The continuation of Jim Moran’s generosity is an investment in our students, our businesses and our state.”

“In 1995, when my husband, Jim Moran, and Dr. Melvin Stith (then dean of the FSU College of Business) established the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship, the term ‘entrepreneurship’ was not commonly used,” said Jan Moran.

“Jim believed ‘The future belongs to those who prepare for it,’” she said.

“With this gift, we forever secure the legacy of Jim Moran and his passion for supporting entrepreneurism so that current and future generations will have the knowledge and skills they need to be successful. I’m excited about the positive impact that the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship will have on the student entrepreneurs as they embark on their lifelong entrepreneurial journey, creating and growing successful businesses and creating jobs throughout Florida and beyond.

The School will be organized across five major focal areas that will offer academic majors under the B.S. and B.A. degrees in: Arts and Humanities, STEM, Business, Allied Health, and Applied disciplines such as law, education, criminology, social work and others.

Jim Moran’s legacy of giving to Florida State continues with this $100 million gift from Jan Moran and The Jim Moran Foundation, which when added to previous gifts, including $2.5 million from JM Family Enterprises Inc., a company founded by Jim Moran, brings their total donations to Florida State to more than $109 million.

“FSU is proud to partner with The Jim Moran Foundation and Jan Moran to create the largest truly entrepreneurial school in America,” said Tom Jennings, vice president for Advancement and president of the FSU Foundation. “We are grateful to Jan Moran and The Jim Moran Foundation for their vision, their commitment to quality and their support of entrepreneurship at FSU and beyond. Our students and the thousands of individuals they will influence and serve during their careers will benefit from this incredibly generous gift.”

“Virtually every profession demands a certain level of entrepreneurial thinking, but very few students actually gain entrepreneurial training and experience before they graduate from college,” said Michael D. Hartline, dean of the College of Business.

Because of the vision and generosity of Jim and Jan Moran and The Jim Moran Foundation, Florida State students will have the unique ability to study and practice entrepreneurship from a valuable perspective in the arts, sciences, humanities, education, communication, law, medicine and, of course, business.”

Florida State currently offers an undergraduate major and minor in entrepreneurship, with both housed in the College of Business.

The demand for these programs is very strong and growing, Hartline said. Simultaneously, as a part of its Entrepreneurial University Initiative, FSU also has embedded 28 entrepreneurs-in-residence

(EIRs) across campus in 12 of its 16 colleges.

“Now, by establishing the new school, the university takes a bold step in ensuring the longevity of entrepreneurship by unifying all such efforts on campus,” Hartline said.

The Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship will reside under Provost Sally McRorie and operate much like a college. The school’s director and other staff members will be housed in a building in downtown Tallahassee, very close to the state capitol, local businesses and statewide associations. The Jim Moran Institute also will relocate to the same building. The prime location will ensure that the Jim Moran name

is front-and-center with respect to entrepreneurship around the state.

The school is expected to become the go-to resource for government leaders, trade associations, entrepreneurs, nonprofits and small businesses on a national level.

Provost Sally McRorie appointed FSU business professor, entrepreneur-in-residence and university administrator Dr. Susan Fiorito to lead the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship. The undergraduate entrepreneurship programs currently housed in the College of Business will be moved to the school, which will award both the Bachelor of Science degree and Bachelor of Arts degree in Entrepreneurship, along with a

The university anticipates a phased approach to the development of the school leading up to 2018. It is expected that the number of entrepreneurship majors and minors will grow dramatically and that the program will admit several hundred majors by the third year.

How is the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship different from other university programs?

It is the largest interdisciplinary entrepreneurship school in the nation.

No other university connects its entrepreneurship curriculum to a set of broad-based outreach programs designed to help entrepreneurs and small businesses. The outreach mission of the new school will be conducted through the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship, which has a long 20-year history of serving entrepreneurs and small businesses throughout Florida.

When will the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship start to operate as its own school with its own academic programs?

A soft-launch of the interdisciplinary entrepreneurship degree is set for fall 2017. This date allows the school to ensure smooth operations in advance of the public launch set for August 2018 and creates a graduating class for the 2018-2019 academic year.

How many entrepreneurship majors do you expect over the next few years?

Once the new curriculum launches, we expect to slowly increase the number of entrepreneurship majors. In the first year, we expect to more than double the number of majors. The program expects to admit several hundred majors by the end of the third year.

Will the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship remain part of the College of Business?

The Jim Moran Institute will remain in the College of Business, where it has thrived for more than 20 years.

Working very closely with the new school, the Jim Moran Institute will continue its extensive outreach mission across the State of Florida to help tie real-world entrepreneurship practice with entrepreneurship education delivered across campus in our classrooms, labs and incubators.

The combination of the new school’s interdisciplinary approach and the Jim Moran Institute’s outreach will forever change the face of entrepreneurship in the State of Florida and create a lasting impact on our economy.

Under what academic unit will the Jim Moran School operate?

To ensure complete integration and coordination, the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship will reside under the provost and operate much like a college.

Who is in charge of the Jim Moran School?

Provost Sally McRorie appointed FSU business professor, entrepreneur-inresidence and university administrator Dr. Susan Fiorito as the founding director of the Jim Moran School.

Where will the Jim Moran School be located?

It will be located in a three-story, 19,000-square-foot building, the former Guaranty National Bank, located at 111 S. Monroe St, where it is in close proximity to the state capitol, local businesses, and statewide associations. The school’s and the Jim Moran Institute’s director and other staff members will be housed at this facility. Although the school’s faculty (including the EIRs) will maintain offices within their current colleges and departments, they will rotate offices in the school’s main location throughout the year. The school’s faculty will continue to teach in their home college as well as the Jim Moran School.

What degree will graduates of the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship receive?

They will receive either a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship or a Bachelor of Arts in Entrepreneurship.

The school will also offer a redesigned, interdisciplinary minor in entrepreneurship.

Will the College of Business still offer its own undergraduate entrepreneurship major and minor?

No, the academic programs currently housed in the College of Business will be moved to the Jim Moran School and will become more interdisciplinary in scope.

Why is this change being made?

This change is imperative in order for Florida State University to expand enrollments in the entrepreneurship major and minor. Faculty and space resources in the College of Business, limit current enrollments. However, the demand for entrepreneurship education is very strong and growing.

To move forward, more faculty and space are needed.

Simultaneously, as part of the Entrepreneurial University Initiative, Florida State University has a number of Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) housed in 12 different colleges across campus. While the EIRs are part of a Council of Entrepreneurship that meets regularly and has made great strides, it is unable to fulfill its entrepreneurial vision due to the lack of a coordinated educational program aimed at all students across campus.

The Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship will bring the College of Business programs together with the Council of Entrepreneurship and other human and physical assets around the university to fully realize the vision of the Entrepreneurial University. The linchpin and focal point of this vision is the creation of an interdisciplinary entrepreneurship curriculum. By elevating the entrepreneurship major and minor to the university level, FSU can leverage the talents for each EIR, each college, and multiple physical spaces to create the nation’s largest interdisciplinary

entrepreneurship program. This collaborative approach, housed within the school, also will allow Florida State University to meet the growing demand for entrepreneurship education.

Why is this a good change?

This change allows more students to earn an entrepreneurship degree or a minor in entrepreneurship. As soon as the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship opens its doors, it can grow its enrollment to meet the increasing demand for entrepreneurship education.

Are current entrepreneurship major and minor students affected by these changes?

Current students will not be affected by these changes and will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in entrepreneurship or a minor in entrepreneurship from the College of Business before the new program begins. Students entering the interdisciplinary program beginning in fall 2017 will follow the new curriculum requirements.

How will the new curriculum in the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship be organized?

The Jim Moran School will be organized across five major focal areas, each with an area coordinator and

academic advisor. These areas will offer academic majors under the BS and BA degrees as follows: ARTS & HUMANITIES BA Studio Art; Theatre; Dance; Film; Music; Geography; History; and Literature STEM BS Engineering; Computer Science; Chemistry; Biology; Physics; Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences; Materials Science; Aerospace Studies and Environmental Science BUSINESS BS All business disciplines; Actuarial Science; and Economics ALLIED HEALTH BS Medicine; Exercise Science; Nutrition; Nursing; and Communication Disorders APPLIED BS/BA Law; Education; Interior Design; Communication; Criminology; Family and Child Sciences; and Social Work Will the curriculum at the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship be the same as before?

No. The major will move from a three-year program to a two-year, upper-division program. This will ease the transition for students coming out of the state college system. Additionally, a faculty committee will be formed to work on the school’s curriculum and will solicit input from the EIRs across

campus regarding the best courses for their focal areas. This process will also look at the creation of new courses to ensure the highest quality entrepreneurship curriculum. The school will also offer a redesigned, interdisciplinary minor in entrepreneurship.

What kind of faculty will the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship have?

The courses will continue to be taught by the same innovative, world-class faculty and EIRs as before, and additional faculty who have an entrepreneurship background will be hired as needed.

Will it be easier to get into the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship?

The new school will admit more entrepreneurship students than before; however, prospective students must continue to meet Florida State University’s and the school’s high admission standards. The school will establish its own prerequisites different from those of the College of Business.

Helping FSU students achieve their dreams.

HE RT Special Bond Florida State University students who receive scholarships are able to express their gratitude to the respective donors—but not many get the privilege to personally interact with and receive guidance from the donors who funded their scholarship. Amanda Messing­ schlager, a family and child sciences major, was given that opportunity.

Two years ago, Messingschlager was looking for assistance in pursuing an occupational therapy degree. She found that help when she was awarded The Joyce B. and Bob L. Miles Scholarship in Human Sciences. However, she received much more than just financial assistance.

What she hadn’t planned on was meeting and getting to know the Miles. “Not many students are lucky enough to meet the creators of their scholarship and on top of that, develop a special bond with them,” said Messingschlager.

recommendation letter and review Messingschlager’s resume when she started applying for graduate school.

The close relationship between the couple and student continues today.

Joyce, a consumer and family sciences alumna of Purdue University with a master’s degree in vocational education from Florida State, and Bob, an engineering graduate of Purdue, decided to establish a scholarship because of its long-term impact. The Miles also endeavor to meet the scholarship recipients and foster a personal relationship with them.

2015 was no exception to the Miles’ goal. FSU senior Jy’Shawn O’Neal, a family and child sciences major, was the second recipient of the Miles Scholarship, and he has received the

same personal attention as Messingschlager.

“I was excited to meet the people willing to contribute to my academic journey,” O’Neal said.

“To have people who want to give some of what they have to bless another person is a selfless and remarkable gesture.”

For the Miles, their scholarship meant more than just a noble act.

“I think education is one of the best returns on your giving investment,” Joyce said. “A longtime friend once told me, ‘One of the values of giving while you’re living is that you know where it’s going.’ When we’re gone our money will do a lot of good, but seeing where it’s going now is the biggest joy,” she affirmed.

Unconquered Support AIDS STUDENTS IN OVERCOMING EDUCATION OBSTACLES Brittany Gardener was a freshman in high school when her mother passed away. With little to no support from her mostly absent father, she moved in with her great aunt. To support herself financially, Gardener created business cards and set about to find clients for her house cleaning service, many of them her high school peers. But with her growing responsibilities, she soon lost sight of her dream to be the first person in her family to attend college.

Then in 2009, armed with her strong faith and a work ethic beyond her years, she found the support that would change her life. The youth pastor at her church introduced her to the Upward Bound Program, a program that three years later would lead her to Florida State University’s Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement and the newly created Unconquered Scholars Program.

The Unconquered Scholars Program provides students who have experienced foster care, homelessness, relative care or ward of the state status with much needed resources to help them become Florida State University graduates.

“Before my pastor introduced me to this program, I couldn’t see myself in college. The Unconquered Scholars Program has been such a tremendous blessing in my life. It’s like a home on campus,” says Gardener. The unusual structure of the program—student-led as opposed to administratively-led— creates a strong and unique

connection among this group of first-generation students.

Who are these Unconquered Scholars? They are bright, ambitious and determined students. Their voice is the driving force behind what makes the program successful. When students are given the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than where they came from, the results can be transforming.

Embodying FSU’s unconquered spirit, the program boasts a 95.5 percent retention rate and a near 3.0 overall GPA. Assistant Program Director Lisa Jackson knows first-hand how the Unconquered Scholars Program has played a vital role for first generation students. “Our outreach to help these youth transition even before they get to FSU is critical to their retention. Our students work with

foster care students in middle and high school to promote college enrollment,” explains Jackson.

Gardener relates her heartfelt perspective on the program to a subject Seminoles are quite familiar with: football. She explains, “We need the support like a football team needs its players; I see the ball as our ‘purpose’ in life and every yard gained brings us closer to our goal.

We may get hit hard with challenges and lose yardage, but we pick the ball back up and hold on to it with tremendous hope. Our victory is within reach.”

Of course a program like this one needs funding to thrive.

Remarkably, Florida State University is able to tap into a one-of-a-kind state matching fund opportunity that gives a dollar-to-dollar match by the state of Florida. While contributions to this fund are increasing, much more support is needed to reach a goal of $1 million to the First Generation Matching Grant Fund.

“The role of a human being is to do the right thing for the right reasons—to have a moral compass that guides leadership and success,” shares FSU marketing alumnus and Dollar Tree CEO Bob Sasser.

For Sasser, it’s never just about the numbers. This philosophy has not only guided Sasser’s professional career but has also lead to his continued support of Florida State University.

Sasser and his wife Pam donated $1 million to the Florida State University College of Business. This transformative gift kick-started the college’s $80 million campaign to build a home equipped with the technology and resources needed to provide tomorrow’s business education—Legacy Hall.

“We need to provide space for leaders to grow and succeed. We need to have the ability to keep and recruit the very best professors and students. Legacy Hall is going to be special and one-of-a-kind. I am very excited about the impact it will bring to the future students of FSU,” shares Sasser.

Legacy Hall will provide an increase in instructional space, along with the technology and collaborative work spaces for students to develop ideas, learn investment strategies from Wall Street insiders, practice sales calls in state-of-the-art labs and conduct research on current and emerging business issues.

In addition to their Legacy Hall contribution, the Sassers have established several scholarships, including a $100,000 gift to create the Bob and Pam Sasser Fellowship in Marketing Excellence. In 2012, they gave $750,000 to the Albert J. Dunlap Athletic Training Facility—but the couple’s generosity doesn’t end there.

Sasser also gives generously of his time. He is an active member of the FSU Board of Trustees, a lifetime member of the FSU Alumni Association, an FSU Foundation

Presidents Club honoree, and a Seminole Boosters annual member as a Platinum Chief.

Whether FSU academics or athletics, it’s all important to the Sassers. Their giving philosophy is fueled by the couple’s strong belief in the power of education and its importance in shaping and molding students. “It’s very fulfilling from this end to have a positive role in the success of the students,” explains Sasser.

Time, treasure and talent are what Bob and Pam Sasser willingly give year after year to FSU. And the message they have issued to alumni is simple, “The vision of the future is solid, it’s strong—if you want to be part of something truly transformational, join us. Let’s come together… it’s everyone pulling the ropes.”

About Bob Sasser Growing up the middle son in Panama City, Fla., Bob Sasser came from a home filled with love and a genuine belief in working hard and giving back. He used his strong work ethic and FSU degree to rise to CEO of Dollar Tree, one of the largest retail chains in the country.

Under Sasser’s leadership, Dollar Tree has grown from a regional company located in the mid-Atlantic to an international chain with more than 5,000 stores across the United States and Canada. Annual sales have grown from a little more than $900 million in 1998—the year before Sasser joined the company—to $8.6 billion in 2014. In July 2015, Dollar Tree completed its acquisition of Family Dollar, and now has 13,823 stores, 21 distribution sites in 48 states, five Canadian provinces, more than 170,000 employees and $19 billion annually in sales—the highest earning discount chain in the industry.

Sasser’s strong leadership skills are an attribute for much of his success. He believes, “I have a responsibility to the community and the greater society. It’s what we do—it’s what we live and how our business is built.”

Created two years ago, the Entrepreneur-in-Residence program at Florida State provides students with access to successful entrepreneurs whose coaching and expertise helps accelerate them on a path to success.

“My objective is to give students real-world experiences. Having them work on actual projects will help them be better prepared for the types of career opportunities available,” states Haley, one of more than two dozen entrepreneurs-in-residence. Through this unique partnership, Haley applies her diverse expertise in the areas of digital and entertainment technology, experiential design and virtual reality to provide students hands-on learning. She offers her students the opportunity to experience a variety of disciplines and demonstrate how they work collaboratively.

The interactive display picks up the guitar’s sound and automatically launches a video showcasing the principle of electromagnetics on their website, providing a connection between the physical display and the Mag Lab’s online content.

Mk Haley is building what she calls “Fun with FerroFluid” for the Mag Lab. This exhibit allows guests a more physical way of experiencing the abstract (and often invisible) concepts of magnetic forces and magnetic fields.

“This has been an incredible experience,” said doctoral student Samuel Rosenstein. “The prototype work we are assigned has given us some amazing behind-the-scenes insight on how to create highimpact, real-world projects. We received tailored training and exposure to real world applications that only [Haley] could facilitate.”

Hogan’s steadfast commitment to giving back and helping others is strongly influenced by his past. He grew up humbly in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Fla., the son of working-class parents, and went on to become president of Terrell Hogan law firm and a member of the 11-firm team that successfully sued the tobacco industry for the state of Florida.

There is a national need for law students to receive more advanced training in litigation. According to a 2015 LexisNexis white paper, 95 percent of hiring partners and associates surveyed believe recent graduates lack practical skills at the time of hiring. The paper states that young associates in litigation practice most often conduct legal research, but lack advanced skills in this area.

One Bright Future for a Multi-talented Student Dance captain. Sorority sister. Award-winning scientist. Florida State University senior Barbara Dietrick can be described by many attributes, but her peers and mentors would simply describe her as exceptional. The Golden Girl captain, Chi Omega sister and biological sciences major has taken full advantage of her Florida State education, and she has paved her way toward an even brighter future.

Throughout her time at FSU, Dietrick has studied brain-related diseases under the guidance of mentor Timothy Megraw, Ph.D., associate professor for the FSU College of Medicine. In 2015, Dietrick’s research earned her the Helen Louise Lee Undergraduate Research Award, after studying disease progression in fruit fly embryonic development. The award is made possible by Florida State alumnus Dr. James Lee in honor of his mother’s strong advocacy for education, and it provides Dietrick the support needed to continue her research with the hope to one day apply her findings to diseases like diabetes.

“Barbara is a bright and mature scientist, and I am very proud of her achievements,” said Megraw.

“Through the sustained creation of scholarships by generous university supporters like Dr. Lee, we will continue to produce generations of dedicated scientists, researchers and doctors who truly want to make a life-changing impact in their fields.”

In addition to her award-winning research, Dietrick’s initiative and leadership skills continue to grow. This past year, she served as an Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program Leader—where she helped foster a love of research for first- and second-year students—successfully defended her thesis and continued her work in Megraw’s lab with plans to publish her research.

Barbara has also been interviewing and applying for fellowships at medical schools. With an accomplished education and a promising future ahead, Dietrick is grateful for the opportunities at FSU that have allowed her growth.

“Private support shows me that people care about student success and believe in our ability as the next generation,” shares Dietrick. “For me personally, it serves as encouragement and validation that I am moving in the right direction.”
