Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 2025-26 season of the Florida State University Opera. We are grateful that you are joining us for Jules Massenet’s fairy tale opera, Cendrillon, and I hope that we will see you later this season for Mozart’s Così fan tutte in the spring and Dark Sisters by Nico Muhly and Stephen Karam this summer. It is a pleasure knowing that our students and faculty can take on such challenging repertoire – especially of such different styles – and perform it well for our local audiences.
This summer I had the pleasure to visit the Santa Fe Opera, one of the most prestigious opera companies in the United States and the world. I went specifically to see one of this school’s most successful alumni, Ryan Speedo Green, who made his debut as Wotan in Wagner’s Die Walküre. We have had the pleasure of inviting Ryan to work with our students several times in the recent past, and it is remarkable to see how a singer that once sang the roles of Don Basilio, Bottom, and Publio here in Tallahassee would make his way into the center of the operatic universe in nearly 15 years.
While not every student may be as fortunate as Ryan has been, I certainly like to believe that we are preparing our students to move into the competitive, modern opera industry. Productions like this are a testament to that goal, combining a large principal cast, chorus, orchestra, and modern theater technology into a compelling experience that any audience can enjoy.
We are pleased to welcome back DJ Pike, Sara Oldford, and Melanie Steele for this production of Cendrillon. Their contributions as designers, in addition to Christina Marullo’s work in costumes, helps these stories come to life. I also look forward to the work being presented by James Marvel in his second year here at Florida State in addition to Bernard McDonald, who enters his third season of work here in Tallahassee.
Please accept my sincere gratitude for your patronage. Your time, attention, and financial support helps make art like this possible, and I truly hope that we can offer you an entertaining and moving evening at the opera in return.
Sincerely,

M. Todd Queen

Lucette – hereafter referred to as Cendrillon – is unhappy in a dysfunctional home. Her father Pandolfe has married a fiery countess – Madame de la Haltière – and her new stepmother only cares for her two biological daughters’ advancement in life. Pandolfe is constrained in what he can provide Cendrillon, and so he leaves her behind as they go to the ball to hopefully gain the favor of Prince Charming. Cendrillon is alone and she wishes for some way to experience the ball for herself. A great fairy hears her wish and chooses to grant this favor as long as Cendrillon will not reveal her name and return home by midnight. Cendrillon agrees and is bestowed with a beautiful dress and glass slippers. She then quickly heads for the ball.
Meanwhile, Prince Charming is beset by court nuisances. It is clear that he is not enamored with the life that his father, the King has laid out before him. A parade of eligible bachelorettes is brought before the Prince, including Cendrillon’s sisters, Noémie and Dorothée, but the party is brought to a standstill when Cendrillon arrives. Everyone marvels at this unknown woman’s beauty, and Prince Charming takes the opportunity to get to know her better. She maintains her secret identity, but has to run away when the clock strikes twelve. She leaves only a slipper behind, and Prince Charming makes it his mission to encounter her again.
Back at home, Cendrillon overhears her family discussing the aftermath following her departure. Her stepmother tells her daughters that the Prince rejected the unknown beauty, but Cendrillon does not know that this is untrue. Pandolfe is deeply embarrassed by his new family’s behavior and tells Cendrillon that they will return to there more simple country home where her mother passed away. However, Cendrillon’s heart is broken and she runs off into the forest to die of grief.
Cendrillon and the Prince make their way separately through an enchanted forest. Fairies draw the pair near the base of a magic oak tree, and the two are comforted by the sounds of each other’s voice. In the ecstasy of love, the fairies allow the two to come together and fall into a magical sleep.
The following morning, the Prince’s search for the unknown woman continues. Though many women offer their foot for the Prince’s hand, only Cendrillon’s fits the slipper. The piece concludes as all fairy tales do with a happy ending.

Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon offers us a magical and poignant retelling of Charles Perrault’s beloved Cinderella tale, a story that has captured imaginations for centuries. What makes this work so remarkable is its dual nature—at once whimsical and deeply human. With music of refined elegance and luminous charm, Massenet transports us to a world of enchantment, but beneath its sparkling surface lies a heartfelt exploration of resilience, longing, and transformation.
Composed at the turn of the 20th century, Cendrillon reflects the spirit of the French Belle Époque, a time of both cultural opulence and psychological exploration. Its score moves effortlessly between moments of courtly splendor and scenes of intimate vulnerability. The opera is not simply a fairy tale of love found, but a human story about overcoming adversity, discovering self-worth, and redefining one’s place in the world.
In this production, I have sought to embrace both sides of the opera’s identity— the shimmering dreamworld of fantasy and the emotional depth of lived experience in which kindness, sincerity, and emotional depth are rewarded with genuine love. DJ Pike’s brilliant video projections invite the audience to travel between these realms, underscoring the tension between illusion and reality with the aim of illuminating the opera’s emotional and symbolic power. Christina Marullo’s evocative costumes, Melanie Steele’s whimsical wigs, and Sara Oldford’s luminous lighting design further enrich this vision, bringing texture, color, and atmosphere to Massenet’s world of enchantment. As you experience Cendrillon, I invite you to delight in its magic while also reflecting on the deeper truths it conveys. Beneath the sparkle lies a timeless story of identity, resilience, and hope—qualities that resonate just as strongly today as they did in Massenet’s time.
This project has been supported by a First Year Assistant Professor (FYAP) Grant from the Council on Research and Creativity at Florida State University. That support has allowed me to approach this production with the imagination and depth it requires, and I am especially grateful to Dr. Marcía Porter and Dr. Sarah Eyerly for their invaluable guidance in helping me to secure this grant. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to stage directors Matt Cooksey and Jenna Moynihan, whose generosity, artistry, and dedication have been invaluable in elevating every aspect of this production
