TEXTS

Never One Thing

Words by May Erlewine

I’m the underbelly, I am the claw, never one thing, no, not one thing at all. I’m a street fighter, I’m a prayer for peace, I’m a holy roller, I’m a honey bee.

I am the truth, I am the lie, I am the ground, I am the sky. I am the silence, I am the call, never one thing, no, not one thing at all.

I am hope, I am defeat, I am broken, I am complete. I am the grace, I am the fall, never one thing, no, not one thing at all.

I am the beggar, I am the queen, I am the end, I am the means. I am the haller, I am the wall, never one thing, no, not one thing at all.

I am a victor, I am the loss, I am a profit, I am a cost.

I am the salve, I am the sting, never, no, never, no, never one thing.

I am a mother, I am the child, I am the meek, I am the wild.

I am the witch, I am a saint, I am alive, never one thing.

I am the lion, I am the swan, I am the full, I am the fawn. I am a woman, I am the ring, I am my own, never one thing.

Stabat Mater I.

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi

Stabat Mater dolorosa

Juxta crucem lacrimosa

Dum pendebat Filius.

Stabat Mater VIII

Fac ut ardeat

Fac ut ardeat cor meum in amando Christum Deum ut sibi complaceam

The grieving Mother stood weeping beside the cross where her Son was hanging.

Make me feel as thou has felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ our Lord.

Walk traveler, continue walking

Walk and do not stop, continue walking

When you pass by her house,

Do not tell her that you saw me, Walk traveler, continue walking.

Continue and do not stop, continue walking.

Do not look if she calls out for you, continue walking

Remember that she is bad, continue walking.

Silver Rain

Words by Langston Hughes

In time of silver rain

The earth puts forth new life again, Green grasses grow

And flowers lift their heads, And over all the plain

The wonder spreads

Of life, Of life, Of life!

In time of silver rain

The butterflies lift silken wings

To catch a rainbow cry, And trees put forth new leaves to sing

In joy beneath the sky

As down the roadway

Passing boys and girl

Go singing, too,

In time of silver rain when spring And life

Are new.

Flight

Let me run thru a field in the night, Let me lift from the ground ‘til my soul is in flight.

Let me sway like the shade of a tree, Let me swirl like a cloud in a storm of a sea.

Wish me on my way thru the dawning day. I wanna flow, wanna rise, wanna spill, Wanna grow in a grove on the side of a hill.

I don’t care if the train runs late, If the checks don’t clear, if the house blows down. I’ll be off where the weeds run wild, Where the seeds fall far from this earthbound town.

And I’ll start to soar.

Watch me rain ‘til I pour.

I’ll catch a ship that’ll sail me astray, Get caught in the wind, I’ll just have to obey ‘Til I’m flyin’ away…

Let me leave behind all the clouds in my mind. I wanna wake without wondering why, Finding myself in a burst for the sky. High!

I’ll just roll.

Let me lose all control. I wanna float like a wish in a well, Free as the sound of the sea in a shell.

I don’t know, but maybe I’m just a fool. I should keep to the ground. I should stay where I’m at. Maybe everyone has hunger like this, And the hunger will pass. But I can’t think like that.

All I know is somewhere, thru a clearing, There’s a flickering of sunlight on a river long and wide, And I have such a river inside.

No Time

Traditional Camp Meeting song

Rise, of fathers, rise. Let’s go meet Him in the sky. For we’ll hear the angels singing In that morning. Yes I really do believe that Just before the end of time We will hear the angels singing In that morning.

Rise, oh mothers, rise… Rise, oh sisters, rise...

No time to tarry here, No time to wait for you, No time to tarry here For I’m on my journey home.

Brothers, oh fare ye well. Brothers, oh fare ye well. Brothers, oh fare ye well, For I’m on my journey home.

Kiiriminna

Traditional Finnish

Täst se tullo sellanen joukko, jot ei suru paina. Ympäri maata kulkeneet, ja iloissii on aina.

Hei kiiriminna kaarimminna kiiriminna kairaa, Kiiriminna kaariminna kairaa.

Viispä meit’ on soriata likkaaku juhannuksen kukka.

Heiliä läksimme etsimään, ku entinen joutui hukkaan.

Hei kiiminimma…

Hei kiiriminna…

Here we come, a group that is not weighed down by sorrows. We’ve traveled around the land and always been joyful.

Hey kiiriminna kaarimminna kiirimiina kairaa, Kiiriminna kaariminna kairaa.

There are five of us handsome gals, pretty as the midsummer flowers. We’re looking for a new sweetheart ’cause the old one got lost.

Hey kiiriminna…

I don’t reckon I’ll be any worse off with a new beau, If I got a better beau and some more money!

Hey kiiriminna…

You must not look sad, but joyful. If you are not feeling good, then ‘lift your spirits by bragging’!

Hey kiiriminna…

Here we come, a group who is not weighed down by sorrows. We’ve traveled around the land and always been joyful.

Hey kiiriminna…

Sikirileke/Koloi

This song is a medley of two traditional Sotho folk songs. The first song is a story of two children playing and the other one falling into a pit. The other child is now explaining to the parents what happened. The second song is about a car that is moving at a very high speed and needs to be stopped, which is a metaphor for life that moves by so fast and the need to sometimes stop and appreciate the little things.
