Sekar Kemuda (1979)

Sekaa Gong Hanuman Agung

I Ketut Gede Asnawa (b. 1955) arr. M. Bakan

This performance is dedicated to the memory of Dr. I Wayan Rai.

NOTES ON THE PROGRAM

Sekar Kemuda (Flower of Youth) debuted at the inaugural Festival Gong Kebyar in Denpasar, Bali, in 1979. Its composer, I Ketut Gede Asnawa, is widely regarded as one of the leading Balinese musicians and teachers of his generation, both in Bali and internationally. An exemplar of the modern kebyar style of Balinese gamelan, “Sekar Kemuda” features a complex and at times polymetric pokok, or core melody, in the calung and jegogan instrumental parts; intricate interlocking parts called kotekan in the melodic elaborations of the upper-range gangsa metallophones; and virtuosic, interlocking drumming performed by the two kendang drummers who, alongside the lead melodic instrumentalist playing the ugal, direct the ensemble. The introductory section of the piece, which is called the kebyar (and which gives both the gamelan gong kebyar ensemble itself and its associated kebyar genre of music their names), is played in a full-ensemble, free rhythmic style. This gives way to a long melodic section featuring kotekan in the gangsa parts, which is in turn followed by a section highlighting interlocking drumming and, finally, a codalike closing section called the pekaad, in which all of the different instrumental sections join together in complex polyphony. This abridged arrangement of “Sekar Kemuda” omits some sections of the original work and does not include the reyong gong-chime part.
