STRESS MANAGEMENT by Jhodi-Ann Bowie Dean, PhD

Managing stress is a task that most of us are expected to master, however, few individuals seem to be truly skilled at this task when stressors become overwhelming. Perhaps we make assumptions about what it means to manage stress, without truly understanding what stress management entails. This article begins with an explanation of the concept of stress, followed by information regarding how to effectively manage your own stress. WHAT IS STRESS? Stress is the physiological and psychological response to an individual’s perception that the demands of the world exceed that individual’s ability to adapt, cope with, or meet those demands (Cohen, Janice-Deverts, & Miller, 2007). Although modern-day rhetoric positions stress as something to be avoided, our survival as a human species is dependent on healthy and consistent levels of stress throughout our lives. Healthy experiences with stress often cause us to adapt, adjust, cope, and thrive in ways that we would not have in the absence of it (Gonzáles-Morales & Neves, 2015). For instance, the stress of having monthly bills to pay propels us to work hard in our jobs and potentially pursue meaningful careers. The stress associated with overcoming daily challenges engenders human creativity and ingenuity that propels technological advancements. In fact, stress is an essential tool in our ability to learn (Ivey, Ivey, & Zalaquett, 2018).
