Joseph Finberg, the visionary founder of F Squared Fusion, holds a degree in Physics from Columbia University and has also studied at the University of Oxford. With a background steeped in cutting-edge physics and a passion for solving one of the world’s most pressing challenges, Joseph is dedicated to making fusion energy a commercial reality.

JOE FINBERG

Joseph’s research has in the past looked into electromagnetic (EM) gyrokinetic (GK) turbulence in tokamaks and the interactions between energetic particles and plasma turbulence. Unlike wellunderstood electrostatic turbulence, EM GK turbulence and its impact on energy, particle, and momentum .

PLASMA STABILITY

Ensuring the stability of plasma is crucial for maintaining the conditions necessary for fusion. While we are currently in prototyping stage, we plan to utilize advanced control systems and diagnostics to monitor and stabilize plasma, preventing disruptions and maximizing efficiency.

JOSEPH SFINBERG

Another key challenge in the commercial fusion journey is plasma confinement. The high temperatures required for fusion —often exceeding millions of degrees— pose significant technical hurdles. Joseph Finberg has been at the forefront of researching how to confine plasma within powerful magnetic fields using advanced devices like tokamaks and stellarators.

COOLING AND ENERGY CAPTURE

Managing the extreme heat generated in fusion reactors is another major challenge. F Squared Fusion has developed innovative cooling systems to dissipate heat efficiently, protecting equipment and boosting reactor performance. These systems are essential for maintaining stable fusion reactions over time.

ENERGY STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION

Storing and distributing the energy generated by fusion reactions is critical for practical energy use.

F Squared Fusion is developing advanced energy storage systems that can ensure a stable power supply from fusion reactors and meet the needs of modern energy grids. These solutions are integral to making fusion a commercially viable energy source.

THE ART OF FOUNTAIN PENS

Outside of his research, Joseph S Finberg is an avid collector and user of fountain pens. For Finberg, fountain pens are more than just a tool they represent a fusion of artistry and functionality. The tactile experience of writing with a finely crafted pen connects him to a time-honored tradition of expression, creativity, and precision.

SAILING AND TRAVEL: A LOVE FOR ADVENTURE

When not immersed in the world of fusion energy or engaging in strategic games, Joseph Finberg enjoys sailing and traveling. Both activities allow him to explore new horizons on water or through different cultures. Sailing, with its demands for precision and control, echoes the challenges of fusion energy research, while travel opens his mind to new perspectives and provides inspiration and relaxation.

PLASMA TURBULENCE AND ALFVEN WAVES

Another significant area of Joseph S Finberg’s research involves plasma turbulence in fusion reactors. Plasma, the hot, charged gas that fuels fusion reactions, is highly unstable, making it difficult to maintain the necessary conditions for sustained energy production. Finberg’s work on electromagnetic (EM) gyrokinetic (GK) turbulence in tokamaks focuses on understanding how energetic alpha particles from deuterium-tritium fusion interact with plasma turbulence.
