Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic, Dominican, independent, college-preparatory, day and boarding school, educates young women for a life of faith, integrity, and truth.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

“ We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

Eliot

T.S. Eliot’s quote marks the place where I would like to begin this last letter to you as Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s President. I am completing a 21-year assignment given to me by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose on May 6, 2003, when I assumed the role of President at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. These 21 years have truly been an exploration of relationships, accomplishments, serious challenges, and change. It has been an exploration of new programs, beautiful celebrations, poignant sorrows and losses and yes, it has been a deep and visionary exploration of Mission—what it truly means to be Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic, Dominican, Independent, college-preparatory, day and boarding school that educates young women for a life of faith, integrity, and truth.

T.S. Eliot is correct in saying that “the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

I can truly tell you I have experienced, in this transition, the true beauty of our Flintridge Sacred Heart Mission, the beautiful light of Veritas that shines from the top of this Hill, and the beauty that is reflected in our Flintridge Sacred Heart community as we seek to live in Right Relationship together.

I am confident in the leadership of our new President, Marlena Conroy. She brings new energy, spirit, and commitment to her work here on the Hill—our beautiful Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy will continue to flourish and thrive.

T.S. Eliot also tells us, “The journey, not the destination, is what matters.” As I close my term as President, I want to express sincere appreciation to our administration, faculty, and staff for their genuine commitment to our young women—our Mission is truly “all about the girls!” In so many areas of student life—academics, student activities, leadership opportunities, our Dominican preachers and campus ministers, our artists, our athletes, our Speech and Debate team, our Academic Decathlon Team, our Science Olympiad Tournaments, our Global Adventures and Round Square, our Science STEM program, our outstanding Research Program, and many other endeavors, our young women are thriving! It points to a vibrant rigorous high school experience on the Hill. This can only be achieved through the leadership and commitment of a dedicated administration, faculty, and staff. Thank you to each of you for a job very well done.

This past year, I had the privilege of meeting with the majority of our student body in small groups to talk with them about the importance of Right Relationship. This concept, as reflected in Catholic Social Teaching, is the ongoing effort to allow the positive values we hold within ourselves to be reflected in our daily actions toward each other—healing, wholeness, generosity, and graciousness. And when things break down and need to be restored, we know how to do this—reconciling restorative practice is at the center of our efforts to live in Right Relationship. Honest encounter, genuine dialogue, and evident inclusion are the actions that mark Right Relationship. I truly believe this effort can allow us to live our justice journey, empowered by God’s love.

As I leave the Hill, I particularly want to thank our Flintridge Sacred Heart community for your generous support of our Advancement efforts on the Hill. We have had many

projects; we have taken some risks. In the midst of it all, you, our community of alumnae, past parents, grandparents, current parents, and friends of FSHA have been incredibly generous to us. Your gifts, throughout the years have changed the face of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy! Our Student Activities Center, the Sisters’ Chapel and Terrace, the Mozilo Family Center for the Arts, the renovation of the Residence Hall, the Bridge Scholarship, and, finally, our last Legacy of Love campaign, completing the High School renovation, and so many more “little projects” speak deeply of your support of our Mission on the Hill. Words fail to truly express my deep appreciation. We have gone farther than we ever imagined we would go!

I am confident in the leadership of our new President, Marlena Conroy. She brings new energy, spirit, and commitment to her work here on the Hill—our beautiful Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy will continue to flourish and thrive. Together, Marlena and Rebecca Bostic are the new leadership team on the Hill. They each carry a love for our Catholic, Dominican mission—our charism is burning deep within them! We will watch them grow and we will celebrate their achievements.

I have often said to our Flintridge Sacred Heart community “You never really leave the Hill” so I know a part of my heart remains here with you. That said, it has been a privilege to serve you, one day at a time, with love.

With a heart full of gratitude,

A HEARTFELT TRIBUTE TO SISTER CAROLYN MCCORMACK:

21 YEARS

OF LEADERSHIP

AT FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART ACADEMY

A Heartfelt Tribute to Sister Carolyn McCormack: 21 Years of Leadership at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy

After 21 remarkable years as President of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, we reflect with deep gratitude on the extraordinary legacy of Sister Carolyn McCormack. Her journey, shaped by a deep sense of purpose and faith has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who have been fortunate enough to know her. From her early years working for Southern Pacific Railroad to answering her vocational call, Sister Carolyn has followed a path of service, leadership, and education that has inspired countless students and families. Under her steady hand, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy not only flourished academically but became a sanctuary of faith, intellectual curiosity, and service.

decision led her to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, where she would begin her 50-year commitment to education and religious life.

Her early teaching years were spent in parishes in San Francisco, where she quickly rose to leadership roles, becoming a principal at a young age. “I was asked to become principal in Northern California, and just as I accepted, my mother passed away,” Sister Carolyn remembers, reflecting on the challenges she faced with grace and resilience. Her years in elementary education, particularly at St. Elizabeth in Oakland, shaped her approach to leadership—one rooted in compassion and dedication to students.

Leadership at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy

A Path Chosen with Purpose

Sister Carolyn’s journey to religious life was far from conventional. After high school, she worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, but a pivotal moment of reflection led her to consider a deeper calling. “I felt compelled to make a decision about my life,” she recalls. Despite initially thinking a vocation might be too boring, she decided to explore her call to serve. That

project that spanned nearly 22 years. “It was the longest and most challenging project of my career,” she reflects. “We took the auditorium down to its core and created a beautiful building with every bell and whistle you could want— spaces for theatre, dance, ceramics, and 2D art, all nestled together.”

The Center for the Arts, completed in 2020, was a labor of love for Sister Carolyn, one that showcased her perseverance in the face of opposition. “We dealt with several challenges, from logistical hurdles to delays, but we stayed the course,” she says proudly. “It turned out to be such a blessing for the entire community.”

In 2003, Sister Carolyn became president of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, a role that would define her legacy. “I never saw myself as a high school president,” she admits, “but I had a lot of energy and enthusiasm for our Ministry. I always looked forward to making a difference and working with young people.”

Under her leadership, the school underwent significant growth, both in its facilities and its Mission. One of her proudest achievements was the construction of the Mozilo Family Center for the Arts, a

Another hallmark of her presidency was the introduction of the school’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiative. “It was clear early on that this was a significant and necessary program, one that has made our community stronger.”

Sister Carolyn’s visionary leadership played a pivotal role in the completion of the renovated high school building, a central achievement of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Legacy of Love campaign.

The renovation included five state-of-the-art classrooms that are thoughtfully designed collaborative areas that foster creativity and intellectual engagement. The updates also included enhancements to the high school’s entrance, hallways, and 15

This is a wonderful moment for new leadership to bring fresh ideas to the table. I have absolute confidence that Marlena will roll up her sleeves, embrace the Mission, and take Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy to new levels.

faculty spaces, ensuring a lasting impact on both the faculty and students for generations to come.

A Legacy of Transformation

Sister Carolyn’s influence extends beyond buildings and programs. She leaves behind a spiritual legacy, one rooted in the values of the Dominican Sisters and the Mission of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. For 10 years, she led reflection groups with mothers in the community, helping them grow in faith. “It’s been a privilege to work with them and to promote the vision and Mission of the school,” she shares.

“Sister Carolyn’s remarkable leadership has not only shaped the physical landscape of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy but has also profoundly impacted the hearts and minds of our community. Her unwavering dedication to fostering a nurturing environment for both

students and faculty has set a standard that we will continue to uphold. As we move forward, we carry her legacy with us, committed to building upon the strong foundation she has laid,” said Rebecca Bostic, principal.

Sister Carolyn McCormack stepped down from her role as president on June 30, 2024, confident in the school’s future and the capable hands of her successor, Marlena Conroy. “This is a wonderful moment for new leadership to bring fresh ideas to the

table,” Sister Carolyn remarks. “I have absolute confidence that Marlena will roll up her sleeves, embrace the Mission, and take Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy to new levels.”

Looking ahead, Sister Carolyn is committed to providing guidance and support to Marlena as she embarks on her leadership journey. “I will always be there for Marlena, and I have no doubt that the Board of Directors will wholeheartedly support her as well,” she affirms. As she contemplates her future, Sister Carolyn looks forward to continuing her spiritual work, reflecting on the profound journey that began with a single question about her vocation.

“I have never regretted my choice,” she says with a warm smile. “It’s been anything but boring, and I feel immense gratitude to the community for the growth and fulfillment I’ve experienced over the years.”

CHERISHED MEMORIES SISTER CAROLYN

Sister Carolyn has been an exceptional mentor, deeply shaping my understanding of leadership. Her unwavering dedication to the school’s Mission, its students, and every employee is truly inspiring. She goes out of her way to connect with each individual, ensuring they feel seen and valued. Sister Carolyn’s joy in her work is contagious, as she consistently highlights the good in the world, fostering a positive and uplifting environment. Her openness to new ideas and enthusiasm for embracing change have set a powerful example of forward-thinking leadership. I feel incredibly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with her over the past 17 years, and I believe her influence will leave a lasting impact on all of us.

During the bookends of the 18 years I have known Sister Carolyn at FSHA, I first heard her explain the Dominican charism in an inspiring manner, with her angelic, memorable voice, during my first week. This past year was an opportunity to work frequently and directly with her to develop summer programs that embed the charism and to experience her compassion and drive to bring the Hill experience to as many people as possible. To work with her in this way was to feel a powerful force, but instead of feeling put upon, it was motivational and joyful. I feel deeply blessed to have had this opportunity.

Sister Carolyn offered unstinting support to academic rigor and excellence. She was fully behind the original Veritas Project which led to a clear-eyed evaluation of the academic trajectory of the school. And at every back-to-school night for the last 20-plus years, she sat in the back of many classes, assuring parents who listened to presentations that their daughters were in the hands of skilled, caring teachers.

Sister Carolyn and I had some amazing years together. She always set an example for how to be strong female leaders. I have an unending appreciation for the support I received as a faculty member while raising a family. The first question Sister would ask was, “How are the boys?” Thank you for all you have done for me personally, but also for your leadership at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy!

Kathy Desmond, Academic Dean and Registrar

Sister Carolyn was a leader of the truest form. She led with love and focus and never deviated from the Mission for even a moment. The girls were always at the forefront of every decision she made and always left room for the Holy Spirit to disrupt any best-laid plans. She was a model of loving, female leadership for generations of TOLOGS who were blessed by her bright smile and fairy godmother-level warmth and care.

Sr. Carolyn was not just an amazing leader, but she did it all with abundant grace and fortitude of character, always radiating joy. It is with profound gratitude that I reflect on the incredible legacy of leadership, benevolence, dedication, and love that she wove into the fabric of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Sister Carolyn’s unwavering commitment to the values of education, compassion, and integrity have left an indelible mark on my heart. Her keen vision not only shaped our school, but she has left an enduring impression on the character of those she mentored, specifically, this School Nurse. Thank you Sr. Carolyn for blessing my life and all those on the Hill.

Nurse Kathy Larson, RN CLE

For Sister Carolyn, relationships and people are of prime importance. She never let us lose sight of the fact that Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy —its amazing location, rich history, and breathtaking views—was made by the people who are here.

TIMELINE:

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART ACADEMY LEADERSHIP

Before 1963, the Principal of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy managed both academic and administrative responsibilities, as the school’s smaller size made this dual responsibility feasible. As Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy grew, it became clear that a dedicated leader was essential to guide the Academy’s expanding operations and long-term vision. The title “Administrator” began to be used in 1972. It wasn’t until 2004 that the title of “President” was officially adopted, marking a new era of leadership at Flintridge Sacred

A MESSAGE FROM SARAH SIMA MCCANN ‘96

Chair, Board of Directors

Dear Flintridge Sacred Heart Community,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, faculty, staff, and students we celebrate Sister Carolyn Marie McCormack and her 21 years of stewardship. For two decades, Sr. Carolyn has been a cherished leader, guiding us with a visionary approach and a steadfast dedication to our Mission. We are a better school community because of her joyful leadership, unwavering devotion, and invaluable wisdom.

Completing the high school classroom renovations was central to Sr. Carolyn’s Legacy of Love campaign, aiming to inspire and empower future generations of TOLOGS. A project years in the making, this campaign has left a transformative and enduring impact on the Hill. Your contributions are essential in furthering our work to ensure Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy will continue to thrive on the Hill. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we extend our heartfelt appreciation. Your generosity and enthusiasm enable Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy to fulfill its Mission: to prepare young women for a life of faith, integrity, and truth.

Carrying out our initial phase of the planned leadership transition, we welcomed Rebecca Bostic in her new role as principal. Rebecca is a thoughtful and energetic leader. Her decisions are student-centered and inspired by our Dominican charism. We are grateful to have her directing the holistic education of our young women.

After a comprehensive national search process last year, consistent with principles of best practices established by the National Association of Independent Schools, Marlena Conroy was selected as Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s first lay Catholic president. Named by a search committee consisting of representatives from the school community and the Dominican Sisters, her selection was endorsed by the Board of Directors and approved by the leadership of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose.

Marlena is an engaging, joyful, and authentic leader who will articulate and promote the Catholic Dominican identity of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. She is mission-focused and embodies a positive, hopeful vision for the future of all-girls education. Marlena believes the current era offers limitless opportunities for young women and recognizes the value of forward-thinking

strategies to prepare them for a dynamic future. Our students are the future leaders of our ever-changing world and Marlena is the person to lead them, and all of us, forward.

We continue to appreciate our outstanding faculty and staff who are committed to providing the strongest educational experience for our students, continuously inspiring our girls to discover their voices, to question their world, and to know themselves. Our Dominican values and Catholic heritage are instilled in the foundation of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Our Mission is alive on the Hill!

Our beloved Hill is more than a physical place, it is a sacred space where knowledge, compassion, and empowerment converge to support the best and the brightest we have to offer. As we look ahead, it is with great fondness and deep gratitude that we prepare for the leadership transition, celebrating the legacy of our Dominican Sisters and honoring Sister Carolyn Marie McCormack. The Board of Directors is profoundly grateful to our community and shares excitement for our school’s future.

We continue to appreciate our outstanding faculty and staff who are committed to providing the strongest educational experience for our students, continuously inspiring our girls to discover their voices, to question their world, and to know themselves.

FAREWELL…

At our President’s Dinner in May 2024, we honored those Directors who would be departing from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Board of Directors. Words cannot fully express our gratitude to each of the following, who have shared their talents, time, and treasure with our school and our Catholic Dominican Mission.

Jeffrey Bennett

We extend deep gratitude to Jeffrey Bennett for nine years of dedicated service on our Board of Directors at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Jeffrey began his term as a Director in 2015. Jeffrey and his wife, Julieta, have three daughters who are FSHA graduates, Amanda, ’11, Andrea ‘14, and Sofia ’17. Julieta was also engaged in leadership on the Hill, serving on the Parents’ Guild Board during those ten years when their daughters were here at school on the Hill. Both Jeffrey and Julieta have been amazing and generous leaders in our school community. Throughout our fund-raising efforts for the Mozilo Family Center for the Arts and the High School Renovation project, Jeffrey and Julieta consistently supported Flintridge Sacred Heart and our Mission. We are deeply grateful to the Bennetts, for their friendship, their generosity, and most of all their deep and supportive commitment to the Dominican Sisters and the mission of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. Thank you, Jeffrey and Julieta!

Barbara Marshall

How can we thank Barbara Marshall for the 15 years of dedicated service she has given to Flintridge Sacred Heart? Stepping into the Board of Directors in 2009, Barbara has consistently been FSHA’s voice in the City of La Cañada Flintridge! Her active participation in the LCF Chamber and her personal business as a State Farm Insurance agent gave Barbara the expertise and knowledge few of us share about the “workings” of the City. Wherever she went, Barbara was about supporting and sponsoring Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and the school’s Mission. A strong benefactor to our school, Barbara is a lifelong member of the FSHA’s Mother Dolorosa Society, our Planned Giving program at the school. Her generosity has touched every effort of school improvement over the past 15 years! While no longer on the Board of Directors, we are confident Barbara will continue to use her influence to support and affirm Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy everywhere she goes in the city of La Cañada Flintridge. We thank Barbara Marshall for her commitment to the Dominican Sisters and Flintridge Sacred Heart.

Please join me in extending sincere gratitude to Kevin Ehrhart for his two terms of service on our Board of Directors. Kevin and Heather’s daughter, Alexandra is a graduate of the Class of 2020. Both were actively involved at school during her four years. We are also very grateful to Heather, who generously brought her leadership skills to the Parents’ Guild during Alexandra’s time on the Hill. Accepting a role as a Director in 2018, Kevin has brought strong leadership and vision to the Board, most especially in recent years as Chair of FSHA’s Governance Committee of the Board. This critically important Board Committee meets with the President offering advice and governance between regularly scheduled Board meetings. Kevin’s leadership and clear vision continuously challenged us to be the best we can be. Thank you, Kevin, for sharing your precious time, talent, and support with Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. We are grateful for your vision, your generosity, and your goodness, and we wish you all the best as you move forward with your work and projects. May you know God’s blessing.

CELEBRATING FAITH AND ACHIEVEMENT — BACCALAUREATE MASS

Ava Grimes ‘24

Good evening fellow classmates, administration, faculty, staff, parents, guardians, and guests! My name is Ava, and it is an honor to be speaking this evening on behalf of my classmates.

Thank you so much for gathering here today in the spiritually and emotionally resonant tradition of the Baccalaureate Mass.

In the Gospel Reading of Matthew it begins with “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

“YOU are the light of the world. A city BUILT ON A HILL cannot be hidden.”

I mean, come on… Flintridge Sacred Heart really NAILED IT with this one!

The Hill is a physical manifestation of the calling for each and every one of us, who has earnestly learned from and reciprocally engaged with our Flintridge Sacred Heart community, to boldly carve out a path of faith, integrity, and truth for others to follow or from which to create their own trajectories.

Quietly, the Hill has been a vantage point from which to remind ourselves of the broader perspective, to refresh our spirits, and explore our personal faith journeys, and to recognize our bigger responsibility of sharing our gifts.

BOLDLY, the energetic and committed investment in study, community, service, and prayer on the Hill has served to illuminate our personal journeys, which begin promptly, to highlight the message of faith, which is unwavering, and to share the fruits of our work, which are enduring.

And so, our community “built on the Hill cannot be hidden.” Therefore, let the light we cast from these lived journeys in service to others continue to be reflective in nature, informed through study, reinforced by our community, and rooted in God.

In the second reading, St. Paul underscores to the Corinthians that “there are different kinds of gifts, there are different kinds of service, and there are different kinds of working. Now to each one, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.”

As I look over my fellow Class of 2024 graduates, I am profoundly honored to be in the company of such talent and graciousness.

I have seen my fellow graduates dance with artistry and grace, sing with beautifully resonant and affecting voices, act with emotional fluency and expressiveness, instrumentally convey with virtuosity and verve, score the winning point with focus and resoluteness, cross the finish line with strength and tenacity, speak with poise and facility, write with openness and conviction, visually express with resourcefulness and creativity, and more importantly, move through this life, thus far, with purpose and resilience.

As much as it has been an honor to bear witness to the extraordinary gifts of my fellow graduates, it has been transformative to reconcile that their gifts are and will continue to be shared truly in service to God.

Finally, as the prophet Jeremiah spoke in the first reading, “For I know full well the plans I have for you, plans for your welfare and not for your misfortune, plans that will offer you a future filled with hope,” whatever your faith and life journeys are, I am wholly confident in the skills, talents, and spirit of the Class of 2024 to create a bountiful legacy.

And, because the legacy of the Hill is rooted in faith, we are tethered to one another, to our larger community, and to the new bonds we will create and nurture. In other words, as Sister Carolyn so aptly reminds us, “You never really leave The Hill.”

Let us bring the light from the Hill to illuminate our paths, so that our connections, our stories, and our faith may reverberate both in scope and through time.

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, MY FELLOW GRADUATES, Class of 2024!!!

THANK YOU!!!

THEATRE ON THE HILL

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, a heartwarming tale of a self-centered toy rabbit who, after being lost, embarks on a journey of love and self-discovery. Through this enchanting production, our talented students beautifully bring Edward’s transformation to life on stage. This captivating performance highlights not only their creativity but also the dedication and hard work that

make it possible. Through countless rehearsals and collaboration across disciplines like computer science and the arts, our students poured their passion into every detail, from acting to the innovative creation of 3-D rabbit dolls. This production beautifully reflects Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s spirit of excellence and commitment to fostering both artistry and resilience in our students.

FSHA’S RESEARCH SHOWCASE: IGNITING CURIOSITY

At Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, the pursuit of Veritas, or truth, is at the heart of the school’s academic mission, and the annual Research Showcase is a powerful testament to that commitment. Every year, Seniors eagerly anticipate the opportunity to present their discoveries and insights at a special evening event, in front of peers, staff, faculty, family, and friends. This year’s Research Showcase, titled Veritas: Seeking Truth through Research, set a high standard, emphasizing the school’s

Dominican charism of pursuing truth through scholarly inquiry.

The Research Program at FSHA was created in 2012 in response to a study done by the joint Academic Senates of California’s UC, CSU, and Community College systems. The study identified expectations for incoming college students’ academic preparation. In short, students need analytical reading skills, analysis and synthesis skills, and the ability to independently complete complex writing tasks. At

FSHA, faculty have spent the past 14 years integrating these skills explicitly into the curriculum, with the Research Program ensuring that every student graduates fully prepared for the rigors of university-level work.

Starting in the 9th grade, teachers are cultivating curiosity while teaching foundational research skills. From navigating academic databases and using predictive search techniques to locate credible sources, to mastering electronic citation tools, students are

gaining expertise with research tools and methodologies. Academic writing and presentation styles become foundational building blocks for critical thinking. Analyzing and synthesizing ideas from multiple sources helps deepen students’ ability to not only acquire but also create knowledge. By the time these students enter their senior year, they are empowered to confidently undertake independent research.

The Research Process: Obstacles, Challenges, and Setbacks

Ty Buxman, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Dean of Research, emphasizes that the research process is not just about the final product, but about the journey students take in getting there. “One of the most important lessons we want students to learn is that experiencing failure is part of the process,” Buxman explains. “When a hypothesis doesn’t work out, or the data doesn’t match expectations, that’s when real learning happens. It’s in these moments that students develop resilience and problem-solving skills, which are essential in both academic and real-world contexts.” Expecting and encountering challenges highlights the importance of perseverance in research. Students learn that setbacks are opportunities to think critically and refine their methods, rather than obstacles to success. This focus on the process encourages students to embrace challenges and approach research with curiosity and an open mind.

The Showcase: A Celebration of Veritas

The Research Showcase ends up being a celebration for senior researchers and the entire FSHA

One of the most important lessons we want students to learn is that experiencing failure is part of the process. When a hypothesis doesn’t work out, or the data doesn’t match expectations, that’s when real learning happens. It’s in these moments that students develop resilience and problemsolving skills, which are essential in both academic and real-world contexts.

Ty

community. Last year’s keynote speaker, alumna Bridget Byrne ‘21, attended UC Berkeley after graduating from FSHA to study Sustainable Environmental Design with a focus on City and Regional Planning. She captured the essence of FSHA research and Veritas, stating “The quest for knowledge doesn’t end with high school. Be willing to explore new ideas and Stay Curious!”

Seniors did exactly that, demonstrating the multiple dimensions of Veritas. Not only are they showing how they have engaged in the pursuit of truth, but Seniors are also sharing truth, making their knowledge accessible and transparent for everyone.

For many other students (current and future), the Research Showcase can be transformative. Seeing other women model confidence and the expertise they have acquired is inspirational. Students are

encouraged to be curious thinkers but are also motivated to consider how their research can contribute to a broader understanding of the world. The Research Showcase also underscores the importance of lifelong learning and search for truth.

Looking Ahead

As the school prepares for the next Research Showcase, this year promises to push the boundaries of student inquiry even further, encouraging a new cohort of scholars to seek out truth and make their mark on the world.

The annual Research Showcase continues to be a hallmark of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s commitment to developing inquisitive, informed, and empowered young women who are ready to take on the world’s challenges with intelligence and integrity.

GLIMPSES

Innovative Creation: 3-D Rabbit dolls for the Play

For the fall play, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, the production featured ten rabbit dolls central to the story of Edward, a toy rabbit made of china who embarks on a transformative adventure. Courtney ‘26, played a pivotal role in bringing the dolls to life. While it is easy for actors to change costumes, dolls cannot. Courtney came up with the brilliant idea for durable dolls that would match the characters’ costume changes. She suggested a unique collaboration between the computer science and art departments to create 3-D printed rabbit dolls. “We had to go through about ten prototypes before we achieved our desired shape and size. We did not want the head to be too heavy, and the rabbit needed to be able to sit,” said Courtney ‘26. This creative approach allowed the production team to maintain Edward’s iconic look while enhancing his adaptability on stage, reflecting the ingenuity and talent of the students involved.

The Immersion Program: A Journey of Growth and Service

At the center of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s mission is the Dominican value of service to others, and the Boyle Heights Immersion Program, led by Jane ‘26, who is also a member of the Dominican Justice Community or DJC displays this commitment. The program offers students an opportunity to step outside the classroom and immerse themselves in experiences that foster personal growth, cultural understanding, and a deep sense of social responsibility. In 9th grade, Jane was reading Tattoos on the Heart, and as someone born and raised in Boyle Heights she was inspired to show fellow TOLOGS the beauty, history, and culture of this unique part of Los Angeles. During the most recent trip to Boyle Heights, students visitied Dolores Mission School and volunteered in classrooms. Later they volunteered at the Guadalupe Homeless Project, cooked spaghetti for the homeless, and played cards with them. “The Immersion Program is about creating moments in which students not only witness the challenges faced by others but also recognize their ability to contribute meaningfully to the world. These are experiences that deepen our compassion and commitment to justice,” said Jane ‘26.

WORLD LANGUAGES

ELLE GILHOOLY ’24: A STUDENT’S JOURNEY: EMBRACING CULTURES AND LANGUAGES

Elle Gilhooly, a proud graduate of the Class of 2024 at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, left the Hill with more than just academic knowledge. Her time on the Hill instilled in her a deep appreciation for different cultures and a strong command of multiple World Languages.

Elle took full advantage of the school’s robust World Languages program, immersing herself in courses that ranged from Spanish to French, and even exploring elements of Mandarin. Her linguistic journey extended beyond learning vocabulary and grammar—it was about understanding the cultures behind the languages.

“The World Language courses at FSHA were gateways into different ways of thinking and living. I learned not only how to speak new languages but also how to appreciate the history, values, and traditions of the people who speak them,” said Elle ‘24.

Dominican Teachings

The school’s rigorous curriculum and culturally immersive approach allowed Elle to explore worldviews that went far beyond the classroom. With every lesson, she was encouraged to think critically about cultural differences and similarities, fostering empathy and understanding.

“At Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, our world language programs open doors to new cultures, perspectives, and opportunities,” said Lara Walker, PhD, World Languages Department Chair, Spanish Teacher. “Learning a language fosters global citizenship and empowers our students to engage meaningfully with the world around them, both academically and personally.” The school’s commitment to Veritas, a deeply held value at the heart of Dominican teaching inspired Elle to seek a deeper and fuller understanding of the truth. Through language learning, she was not just acquiring practical skills, but also building bridges to diverse communities—an essential aspect of living out the Dominican mission of service.

What started as a single idea in response to my personal experience with the disparity of education in the United States and in Latin America has turned into a coalition of members from my school and community, all working together to close the gap between education in under-resourced communities in Peru.

Impact Beyond the Classroom

Elle transformed her passion for language and culture into meaningful action by creating her nonprofit, Aiding the Americas. “Upon returning home from Peru, I knew I

needed to take action and I felt responsible for continuing my passion for language and culture to help bridge the education gap between North and South America,” shares Elle. Through fundraising and community outreach, Aiding the Americas funds

scholarships for talented Peruvian students, striving to foster social justice and educational equity across the Americas. “What started as a single idea in response to my personal experience with the disparity of education in the United States and Latin America has turned into a coalition of members from my school and community, all working together to close the gap between education in under-resourced communities in Peru,” said Elle. “My passion project has allowed me to continue to connect my love for the Spanish language, travel, and education and continue to foster assistance for the education system through my nonprofit.”

A Passion for Learning and Cultural Understanding

Elle’s time at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has instilled in her a lifelong love of learning about the world and its diverse people. “The school gave me the tools to not only succeed academically but also to thrive in a globalized society,” she reflects. “I’m excited to keep growing and to continue exploring other languages and cultures as I move forward.” Elle is currently studying at Texas Christian University and sees her multilingual abilities playing a role in her future career. Whether she decides to work in international relations, business, or any other field, she knows that her understanding of languages and cultures will give her a unique edge.

As she looks to the future, Elle Gilhooly’s story is a shining example of how Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy equips its students with the skills, empathy, and cultural awareness to make a positive impact on the world.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION

It is my honor and privilege to serve as the President of the Flintridge Sacred Heart Alumnae Board. I have been in awe of the grace, poise, dedication, and leadership of the women who have served in this role before me, and I hope to live up to the legacy they created. I am a graduate of the Class of 2014 and have been involved in the alumnae community ever since. It has given me great joy and inspiration to

connect with alumnae from various class years and all parts of the globe. I have found that our alumnae are resilient, always willing to lend out a helping hand, intelligent, compassionate, and keen to leave their stamp on our world. This is a testament to the quality of education and Dominican values instilled in us during our time at Flintridge Sacred Heart. Each of us brings a unique perspective and skill set to the table, and it is this diversity that makes our alumnae community so rich and truly beautiful.

I know I would not be where I am today if it were not for Flintridge Sacred Heart. Every time I head back “home,”

I am reminded of the incredible opportunity it is to have attended a school that blessed me with a foundation and powerful support system. In the years since graduating, I have leaned on fellow TOLOGS for support, guidance, and mentorship, and have formed countless friendships that fulfill me. TOLOGS have been by my side on my best days, ready to celebrate, and on my worst days, willing to support and comfort. I encourage you to reflect on your friendships formed on the Hill and the TOLOGS you have connected with since graduating. Now, join us for an event to foster more of these cherished memories and light the way for our new alumnae.

As we navigate through the ever-changing landscape of the world, our alumnae network remains a steadfast anchor in our lives. It serves as a reminder of the foundation and values that have guided us from our formative years, and it continues to inspire us as we journey forward into the future.

Whether you graduated last year or many years ago, you are a vital part of our family! I invite you all to reconnect with the Hill. Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to our beloved alma mater. Your involvement helps us maintain a strong legacy. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and

working together to strengthen the bond that ties us to Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy!

Wishing you peace, happiness, and health,

PAIGE PARKER ‘10

Founder & CEO

Happenstance Distilling Company

USC

Paige Parker graduated from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 2010. She is now the Founder & CEO of Happenstance Distilling Company, Nashville’s only 100% women-owned and operated whiskey business. Guided by her passion and resilience, Paige’s journey began in marketing for Anheuser-Busch, where she honed her skills. Throughout her career, she has worked with well-known brands including Budweiser, Stella Artois, and NASCAR. Building on that experience, she launched Happenstance in 2021 with the Founder’s Edition Straight Bourbon Whiskey, bringing her vision to life.

Paige holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University and degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Business from USC, blending her deep marketing acumen with storytelling—a combination that has fueled Happenstance’s unique identity. Under her leadership, Happenstance has been celebrated in the media by Fox News, People Magazine, Yahoo! Finance, and Nashville Lifestyles, among others.

SPOTLIGHT

Happenstance is making its mark in Nashville’s vibrant scene, from collaborations with music industry giants like Sony and Universal Music to appearances at the weddings of country stars HARDY & Caleigh Ryan and Mitchell & Meghan Tenpenny. The company was even tapped to sponsor Ella Langley’s ‘Hungover’ tour after she shared stages with Riley Green, HARDY, and Morgan Wallen. If you’re ever in Nashville, you can experience Happenstance firsthand in cocktails at local favorites like Michelin-starred Yolan, Four Seasons Hotel, and on Broadway at hotspots like Eric Church and Miranda Lambert’s bars. You can also find it at the Nashville airport, letting you take a taste of Tennessee home with you.

Honored for its quality, Happenstance has received gold at numerous industry competitions, including the 2023 and 2024 San Francisco World Spirits and the 2024 Denver International Spirits awards, continuing to set a new standard in the whiskey world.

Paige’s inspiring path reminds us of the impact our alumnae continue to make as leaders in their fields, embodying the values that unite us as TOLOGS.

ALUMNAE REUNION LUNCHEON

We joyfully welcomed back the Class of 1974 and alumnae from class years ending in ‘4 and ‘9 for a special reunion luncheon, celebrating their legacy and honoring our Distinguished Alumnae Awardees. As alumnae reflected on how Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy has grown and evolved, they were reminded of the enduring connection to their Alma Mater—this cherished school on the Hill. While still a close-knit community, FSHA is driven by bold accomplishments and dreams. Blending time-honored traditions with innovations, our school continues to empower confident, educated women ready to make a meaningful impact on the world.

GRANDPARENTS’ & SPECIAL FRIENDS’ DAY

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy proudly welcomed grandparents and special friends for a memorable day on the Hill! Grandparents were invited to a delightful luncheon complemented by an engaging chemistry demonstration and an impressive assembly, showcasing the talents of our students from the Visual and Performing Arts Department. After that, grandparents took a stroll through campus to get a closer glimpse into their granddaughters’ daily lives, by visiting their classrooms.

VERITAS COMMUNION BREAKFAST

Students and the influential women in their lives gathered for the Veritas Communion Breakfast, a meaningful morning dedicated to communion, prayer, and reflection. This year’s event focused on the Dominican Pillar of Prayer, celebrating the spiritual foundation of our community. Students were encouraged to invite the significant women in their lives—mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, and sisters—to strengthen the bonds of faith and family through this special tradition.

PRESIDENT’S DINNER

Sister Carolyn McCormack hosted a prestigious President’s Dinner, celebrating the unwavering support of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s dedicated benefactors. Current and former parents, along with alumnae, gathered in the administration building for an evening of gratitude and celebration.

VERITAS DANCE

The Veritas Dance, a cherished tradition at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy since the 1960s, is a highlight of the year, offering a memorable evening of elegance and celebration. This formal event provides a special opportunity for our TOLOGS to share an unforgettable night of dining and dancing with the influential men in their lives—fathers, grandfathers, uncles, godfathers, and other significant figures. Rooted in our Dominican values, the Veritas Dance not only honors these important relationships but also reinforces the sense of community and connection that is at the heart of the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy experience.

IN LOVING MEMORY

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy remembers the following beloved alumnae, family members, and friends. We honor their lives, their legacies, and the lasting impact they’ve had on all of us. We ask that you keep them and their loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. May their spirits find peace, and may we carry their memory in our hearts as we continue to celebrate the bond we share. We honor and remember these cherished members of our Flintridge Sacred Heart community:

Katy Sadler (1938-2024)

Faculty, Mother, Grandmother

On Sunday, September 1, 2024, God called home Katy Sadler, a long-time Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy faculty member and friend. Katy joined the faculty and staff in 1974 as a social studies and religion teacher, later becoming assistant principal and director of the seniors’ KAIROS retreat, perhaps the position she loved most. During her time on the Hill, Katy was a constant presence at nearly every event, but sports was her favorite. Home or away, she was there, cheering on her TOLOGS! Retirement from teaching in 2013 didn’t end her relationship with FSHA. She moved immediately into the Advancement Office where she lovingly connected with ‘her alumnae’ for several years. Katy has three Tolog daughters, Meghan Sadler Conway ’81, Maureen Sadler Martin ’83, and Kathleen Sadler Pernecky ’87, and five Tolog granddaughters, Monica Pernecky ’12, Colleen Pernecky ’15, Julia Martin ’16, Marie Pernecky ’17 and Audrey Pernecky ’25. Along with the Sadler family, the entire Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy community shares her loss. Katy Sadler’s was a long life wonderfully lived—she will be long-remembered on the Hill.

LEGACY OF LOVE CAMPAIGN

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Legacy of Love campaign reflects a powerful commitment to ensuring a vibrant, inspiring educational environment for generations of young women. This dedicated effort honored the vision of Sister Carolyn McCormack, O.P., and the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose by renovating our high school building to meet the needs of today’s students and teachers. Classrooms, hallways, collaborative faculty spaces, and the high school entrance were thoughtfully updated to support our mission of empowering students to be curious, confident thinkers who pursue truth.

Building a Legacy for Future Generations

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our supporters, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy proudly completed these transformative renovations. Proceeds from our spring Gala played a pivotal role, allowing us to create stateof-the-art learning spaces that honor our heritage while embracing the needs of 21st-century education. Through these investments, we are building a legacy of academic excellence and spiritual growth that will benefit future generations of students, ensuring that the heart of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy continues to flourish.

ENDOWMENTS & OTHER RESTRICTED GIVING

At Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, we are committed to making our education accessible to all deserving students. One-third of our student body benefits from need-based financial aid, made possible through endowed funds and generous scholarship contributions. As of June 30, 2024, our scholarship endowment funds have grown to $6.3 million. Unless otherwise designated, these scholarships are renewable annually for students who continue to demonstrate strong academic performance.

Below is a list of contributions to endowed funds and restricted giving received between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024.

ALUMNAE SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND

Established in the early 1980s, this fund awards scholarships to ninth-grade students who have strong academic records and are directly related to a Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy alumna. Recipients are chosen based on the alumna’s participation in Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Alumnae Association programs, the applicant’s grades, and extracurricular activities.

Kathleen M. Hirrel ‘00

THE THERESA BOTELLO ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Theresa Botello Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by her children to honor her life and legacy. Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need, who are best able to take advantage of the educational, spiritual, athletic, artistic, and leadership opportunities that are characteristic of the school, and who model good citizenship and personal integrity to their schoolmates, family, and community and exemplify the values of the school. This scholarship is renewable annually to students who remain in good academic standing.

Michael S. Botello

CARLA MARIE SUAREZ CAPDET ‘98 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Boeing Company/Cesar Suarez

THE JOHN DAVITT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Gael Davitt

HARRY G. JOHANSING SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established by the Johansing family, contributions raised through the school’s annual Johansing Golf Tournament are allocated to the fund. Scholarships are awarded to exceptional students who otherwise would not be able to attend Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. This scholarship is renewable annually to students who remain in good academic standing.

Integrated Office Technology, LLC

THE MARISA ANNE LUPICA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Established in October 2004 with gifts given in memory of Marisa Anne Lupica ’07. Marisa was a beautiful, loving, and caring 15-year-old who touched everyone she met. The recipient of the Marisa Lupica Scholarship should exemplify the Christian ideals that served as the core of Marisa’s being and were the lived foundation of her life. This scholarship is renewable annually to students who remain in good academic standing, model good citizenship and personal integrity to their schoolmates and community, and exemplify the values of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.

Anna L. Clapp Nancy Castle

THE GEORGE H. MAYR ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Initiated in 2000 as a challenge to Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, this fund began with funds donated by the George H. Mayr Foundation upon completion of the school’s match challenge two years later. The scholarships are awarded to students with demonstrated financial need, who are best able to take advantage of the educational, spiritual, athletic, artistic, and leadership opportunities that characterize Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. This scholarship is renewable annually to students who remain in good academic standing.

THE ESTRADA WOLSTAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Established in 2022 with gifts from Rachel Estrada Wolstan ’00, this endowment will provide support for promising young Latina scholars. Qualifying students must have outstanding character, leadership skills, academic ability, and financial need. Rachel’s firm belief in the unique benefits of a Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy education inspired this generous gift. As the granddaughter of a Mexican immigrant, Rachel hopes this endowment will help create and sustain a vibrant and inclusive community on The Hill. This scholarship is renewable annually to Latina students who remain in good academic standing and exemplify the values of Veritas.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIP AND RESTRICTED GIVING

THE AHMANSON FOUNDATION PRE-COLLEGIATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Ahmanson Foundation Pre-Collegiate Scholarship provides financial aid for ethnically diverse students who demonstrate significant financial need. Funds are restricted to need-based financial aid and may not be used for merit-based financial support as described by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) in Principles of Good Practice. This grant provides partial tuition assistance and is renewable annually to students who qualify, based on need and academic standing.

THE DOHENY HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation provides a generous grant to Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy each year to support student scholarships. The Doheny High School Scholarship Program was established more than 20 years ago to give Catholic high schools additional scholarship funds to support promising young scholars with limited financial means. Qualifying students must have outstanding character, leadership skills, academic ability, and financial need. The Doheny High School Scholarship is renewable annually to students who remain in good academic standing.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, we have six Bridge Scholars enrolled in this transformational program. Each student contributes their unique talents and perspectives to our school. We look forward to welcoming new scholars each year, continuing our mission to eliminate financial barriers and make Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy accessible to those who embody our values of faith, integrity, and truth. Our first class of Bridge Scholars will graduate in June 2025.

THE BLACK AND WHITE BALL

We honored Sister Carolyn’s commitment to our community at the Black & White Ball and celebrated the enduring legacy of the Dominican Sisters, whose devotion has shaped our school and empowered generations of young women to lead with faith, integrity, and truth. As Gala Chair, Janelle Carney ‘89, shared, “Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy is near and dear to my heart—from my time here, to the lifelong friends I made, to my daughter, now a senior on the Hill. We show our gratitude for the Dominican Charism that defines who we are.”

Proceeds from this year’s Gala supported Sister Carolyn’s Legacy of Love, a tribute to her lifetime of dedication to our Mission.

MOTHER DOLOROSA SOCIETY

Mother Dolorosa, one of the three pioneering Dominican Sisters who founded Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 1931, guided the school’s early growth. With “a statue of the Blessed Virgin, a $5 bill, and their faith,” three sisters embarked on a journey up the Hill, laying the foundation for the incredible legacy that has followed. In honor of her visionary leadership, we proudly name our planned giving society after Mother Dolorosa. Like Mother Dolorosa, the society members are people whose heart for our mission will impact future generations of young women.

Our generous alumnae, parents, and friends who have chosen to remember Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in their estate plans are a special group. The Mother Dolorosa Society is our way of honoring these philanthropic and dedicated individuals whose thoughtful planned gifts are building a lasting legacy at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.
