Kona is is one of the Apex pack from Wolf Week 2018, “I have photographed Wolf Week for the last two years and look forward to continuing. Photographing these animals is a real pleasure. They’re smart and well-socialized. I’ve been told they remember me and I am almost one of the pack.

Wolf-dogs have an independent streak, so posing the animals is completely out of the question. But, with patience they relax then ignore me and then it doesn’t take much effort to capture extraordinary images. The best images (of all animals) is made at their level. So… I don’t shoot down, but get down and work at the dog’s level. The major challenge is keeping the dogs from licking my camera lens.”

High Country Humane Officially Open For Business

The new executive director, Steve Conrad, works with a staff of 15, including 10 animal care workers, one of whom is a full time veterinary technician, and five customer service staff. The organization expects to hire a full time veterinarian, open a pet food bank, and eventually offer spay/neuter services. Conrad reported “It’s been a very busy first two weeks and I can’t say enough about our fantastic staff and their ability to provide the high level of care we’ve been planning for. They are truly committed to the welfare of the animals and it’s a pleasure to be working in such a positive environment.”

When it opened its doors for business on Wednesday, January 2, High Country Humane had plenty of reasons to celebrate, finding foster homes and preparing for its official opening on the site of the former Second Chance Center for Animals.

In its first two weeks, the facility took in 75 stray animals as part of its contract with the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County, had 28 animals surrendered by owners, had 5 feral/wildlife cases in its care, and took in 5 more animals for an owner in custody. Of those 113 animals, 19 were adopted, 16 were returned to the owner, 2 of the wildlife cases were euthanized, and 76 animals remained in its care. With 59 kennels available for dogs and 49 for cats, High Country Humane is now one of the largest animal welfare facilities in northern Arizona, eclipsing the Coconino Humane Association and the Humane Society of Sedona in its 20,000 square foot building.

Diane Jarvis, president of the High Country Humane Board of Directors, was also enthusiastic about the facility’s initial opening.

“We’ve had a great response with lots of people coming into the shelter to look around. Those who hadn’t been to the facility were wowed by the beautiful, modern, and upbeat feel of the building.

Those who had been here before, to a person, remarked how happy they were to see the shelter open and serving the animals and people again. Many brought donations, from dollars to handmade bedding, toys, and items from our wish list. And volunteers were signing up and eager to be part of this new day in animal welfare.”

Another reason for celebration in January was that Ken Lamm, High Country Humane’s Board Chair, was named Male Citizen of the Year by the Arizona Daily Sun. Lamm’s efforts included heading the campaign to build a sustainable funding source for the shelter, which helped High Country Humane win a $510,000 per year contract with the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County to provide animal welfare services.

Sedona Wolf Week 2019 - March 25-30

Dedicated to changing the way the world perceives wolves, the 3rd Annual Sedona Wolf Week offers multiple ways to learn about wolves and understand the wolf’s role as an essential apex predator. Co-founders Plan B to Save Wolves and Apex Protection Project hosted the first Wolf Week event at Poco Diablo Resort in April 2017. Poco Diablo Resort, an Enterprise of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, is again the Presenting Sponsor.

This unique event has attracted over 2,000 people who have listened to speaker presentations and panel discussions on co-existence, viewed films, enjoyed art and entertainment, and were thrilled to meet the Apex Ambassador Pack up close.

Because both organizations believe education is key to the future survival of the wolf, Sedona Wolf Week also includes presentations to local schools and a workshop especially for children.

In addition to individuals and organizations representing a variety of wolf and wildlife topics, Sedona Wolf Week 2019 will offer greater emphasis on advocacy; how to take action and get involved to become a voice for those who need help most.

of Project Coyote, at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. The film will be followed by a panel, Q&A, and action items on how to join the campaign to end wildlife killing contests. In addition to Fox, panelists will include Jill Fritz, Director of Wildlife Protection at the Humane Society of the United States, who will also speak on protecting the public’s rights to advocate on behalf of wildlife.

“Heart of Yellowstone” Day March 30th will be dedicated to Yellowstone National Park. Speakers and panelists include world-renowned retired park ranger Rick McIntyre, author and advocate Carter Niemeyer, and Marc Cooke from Wolves of the Rockies discussing reintroduction, current issues with wolves, trophy hunting along the Yellowstone border, and the future of the park’s wolves.

The day will end with a selection of films from award-winning filmmaker Bob Landis.

In a VIP evening session Author Rick Lamplugh will speak and read from his award-winning books In the Temple of Wolves and Deep into Yellowstone, followed by a reception and book signing.

Co-Existence Day A day dedicated to co-existence includes more speakers such as Amaroq Weiss from the Center of Biological Diversity, Carter Niemeyer, former hunter, trapper, and killer of wolves who now is one of their most vocal advocates, and Ken Ferber, KC York of Trap Free Montana, and with speakers, ranchers, and other panelists.

greatest change in people and inspires them to take action in protecting the species.

Pack members who naturally enjoy being around and interacting with people make the best ambassadors. Shyer animals are also wonderful ambassadors in their own way.

They may not interact with the public but can be observed and in that way help educate.

Many people don’t realize wolves and wolfdogs are generally very shy creatures and that knowledge, in itself, can change people’s hearts and minds about wolves in a positive way.

When asked how people react to touching a “wolf,” Paula Ficara, Apex co-founder, Paula Ficara & Sarge Wolf says “Something very special occurs when a person touches a wolf or wolfdog. Some biologists believe we are connected to these creatures on a DNA level since we evolved alongside them for centuries. People become emotional. Some describe the connection as primal. They feel transformed.”

Asked about Sarge, she says “Sarge is special! Out of all of our rescues, he came from the most challenging situation. He arrived in extreme physical pain with a broken leg and emotional pain from losing the only family he’d ever known. It took a long time and a lot of patience to earn his trust and then his love. He blossomed.

He started interacting with people with joy, began trusting other members of the pack, and learned to play. He’s probably our top ambassador just because of how much he loves people.”

There will be opportunities to meet Sarge, our cover dog Kona, who has taken the role of the big brother in the pack and helps raise the younger ones, and the Apex Ambassador Pack. This year private pack sessions are limited to 12 people. Sessions will take place in a private location where participants can interact with the pack. Other options to meet the pack include a Pack Social at Poco Diablo, a private hike, and for kids to enjoy quality time with the pack at the Children’s Workshop and to see the Pack at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre.

Living with Wolves When asked about life with the pack, Paula Ficara says, “Our pack is so wellbalanced because we’ve dedicated our lives to them. Every day we socialize and work with them for hours. We hike and exercise them daily - and not just walks around the block! They have tons of space to run. One has to be extremely dedicated to have one of these animals as a companion. They are

not pets. Wolves and wolfdogs are illegal in many states as well as counties within states.

“Most people aren’t educated about what it takes to care for one of these animals when they buy them and many breeders don’t prepare buyers. People need to know that these are exotic animals - not pets. They can make good companions for people with the time, patience, and ability to provide proper care, exercise, and containment, but that’s rare. That is why every year so many are in need of rescue.”

Wolf Dogs at Pets Return Home

By Amber Polo Photos by Larry Kane Nine wolfdog adults and 26 pups arrived at Pets Return Home (PRH) in Clarkdale on October 3rd, 2018.

Apex Protection Project and Plan B to Save Wolves foundation’s emergency rescue team brought the pregnant or new mothers and puppies from the Lassen Rescue in northern California.

Pets Return Home’s Mark Happe offered to take all the pups and pregnant mothers. To prepare, Mark and his volunteers added fencing, gravel, converted a horse stable, and added kennels to the facility.

In one week.

All the animals had health problems, including round worms, whip worms and tapeworms. They were treated in PRH’s on onsite medical clinic, with Dr. Kellie Shamrell of Danza del Sol Veterinary Center as the advising veterinarian.

Dozens of volunteers built trust with the mothers, who lacked socialization and helped with the huge task of caring for the pups as they prepared the pups for adoption. As the pups matured, volunteers cared for them before and after the 40 puppies were spayed and neutered and ready for play yard social time with other PRH dogs.

Adoption Update The super-cute pups became media stars!

Over 200 hopeful adopters submitted the multipage Adoption Application providing information about their experience with dogs, their living situations and lifestyle to determine, first on paper, if they could provide excellent homes for wolfdog pups. For those that passed, home visits followed. Adoptions began and as pups turned 12 weeks, adoptive families with other dogs brought their pets to PRH for “meet and greets” with the puppies. And if all passed, pups left for forever homes with the understanding that PRH will follow the pups’ progress to support each in its new home.

By mid-January 2019, 28 pups have been adopted, including 10 out of state adoptions. 14 are waiting to find the right home or to be old enough to go to their new homes. The 16-week-old pups have been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and DNA tested.

Pets Return Home Mark Happe and former partner Kelly Hughes began Pets Return Home 4 ½ years ago and focused on animal search and rescue, returning lost pets to owners. Pets Return Home, a 501(c)3 non-profit, now focuses on canine behavior modification to build adoptability and training and convalescence support to municipal shelters, animal rescue organizations, and the Verde Valley community on a four-acre ranch near Clarkdale close to the Verde River.

When asked about the enormous job Pets Return Home took on, Mark says, “Plan B Foundation helped us tremendously. Personally, I never quite understood the difference between a non-profit organization and a nonprofit foundation.

We learned the difference this year – not only did Plan B help us financially but their advice, foresight and overall support has raised our level of operating and effectiveness to a higher level.

Two puppies from new litters died at birth. Six pups tested positive for the parvovirus and needed 24-hour monitored intense care. PRH set up a parvovirus isolation ward outfitted with crates and medical equipment. All pups survived!

Little Rider One special seven-week-old pup made the trip from Lassen to PRH with the rescue team. Little Rider had been rejected by her mother and received wounds to her neck. Diagnosed with parvo she became one of the 6 pups needing medical care and spent 5 ½ weeks in isolation before getting her clear bill of health. Because she did so well with other dogs and humans, Little Rider was chosen to return to Apex and perhaps will become a member of the Apex Ambassador Pack.

Paula Ficara of Apex Protection Project says, “It’s a huge responsibility and we’re so grateful Mark bravely took it on. Knowing these animals are in good hands allows all of us who participated in the rescue to breathe a little easier.”

Human Remains Search And Rescue Dogs

Debee Henschen was living in Tucson when she thought it would be fun to train her pet dog Rosie for Search and Rescue. Seven years later she has trained two National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) certified Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs and is training the third. She is an active Search and Rescue volunteer with the Coconino Sheriff’s Search and Rescue.

Loki, her first dog bred for this work is, at 3 ½ years old, certified for all Debee Henschen levels of Area Search, including scent discrimination, all levels of Human Remains Detection (HRD) Land, HRD Water, and HRD Disaster. She is also certified for Articles. She is training her second dog, 8-month-old Poppy, exclusively for Human Remains Detection (HRD). HRD dogs were previously called cadaver dogs.

Both dogs are Field Golden Retrievers (smaller and darker than the AKC standard) bred for such work as hunting and hunting trials, SAR, and agility. All work requiring a high prey and play drive. Evaluated from birth they need to be curious, independent, and unafraid of noise. They need to crave a payoff for successful work - usually playing with a ball or toy. Not surprisingly these dogs love to work and have lots of energy. They must love training and be prepared to work long hours with enthusiasm on multiple days under difficult circumstances. Their handlers also commit to high energy work and ongoing training and fitness.

Human Remains Detection Work Everyone has heard of the dogs who worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center site and after Hurricane Katrina to find both the living and the dead. SAR HRD dogs are invaluable parts of teams that aid in: • Natural disasters: floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, and tsunami searches • Wilderness, avalanches, rubble, and drowning searches • Other mass casualty situations: collapsed buildings, plane crashes, etc.

HRD dogs alert a “find” by a signal the handler can recognize – usually a sit or bark. Some searches are conducted in the dark so the dog will need to learn to return to the handler and then alert the find, often 4-500 yards away.

The valuable service of finding the dead can be upsetting to both human and canine members of the team. A dog’s amazing nose can distinguish an animal bone from a human bone, even very old bones. Not only can Loki detect traces as small as a shard of bone or drop of blood, as a certified water dog, Loki searches from shore and boats and can detect the scent of human remains under 100 feet of water to help human divers narrow their search. Loki is also is called into cases by the FBI on native American reservations, often long after a person disappeared, especially if fowl play was suspected. HRD dogs are vital for providing emotional and legal closure.

Debee Henschen Now with the Coconino Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Debee works in northern Arizona’s rough terrain. As more lost hikers carry GPS devices and airplanes carry transmitters, the “search” part of search and rescue becomes less important and dogs are used less often. Still, children and Alzheimer’s sufferers wander off and dogs are called to locate them quickly.

Debee has worked with the FBI and local law enforcement on missing persons and cold cases throughout Arizona. She tells of one search for an older woman lost collecting pinion nuts. 50 searchers looked for two days and one night. Although Loki was not the dog who found the woman, she impressed all by finding a team member’s lost phone.

Debee is also an 2nd Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol, having the distinction of starting the first Canine Unit and is the Arizona Wing Canine Group Leader. Canine teams assist in searches after crash locations are triangulated.

A three time certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Debee is a Lead Evaluator for NASAR and looks forward to new training opportunities like a K9 Human Remains Detection workshop at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State, known as the Body Farm. She trains every day and is passionate about the partnership relationships with her dogs and enjoys teaching, training, and assisting others to reach their goals with their canine partner.

Verde Valley Archaeology Center Native American Heritage Garden Welcomes Dogs for Rabbit Deterrence

By Amber Polo The Verde Valley Archaeology Center (VVAC) recently opened a Native American Heritage Preserve Pathway adjacent to the 15-acresite of the future Museum. The Garden contains plants that were important to the prehistoric and Native American people of the Verde Valley.

And Rabbits. Lots of Rabbits!

If you choose to try this remedy recipe, experiment with the concentration of poop to water to achieve the desired mixture to spread around the perimeter of your garden.

VVAC Executive Director Ken Zoll says “The Pathway is now open but the official grand opening ceremonies will take place when the construction of Homestead Parkway is complete.”

Native American Heritage Garden Plants will include domesticated foods eaten by the ancient and historic inhabitants of the region, as well as wild or non-domesticated plants that were collected from the surrounding area and used for food, medicine, containers, dyes, cordage, architectural elements, and other purposes.

VVAC members and visitors have opportunities to learn about and participate in the growing of domesticated plants and the collection of wild plants used by the Sinagua, Hohokam, Yavapai and Apache to understand of how Native peoples used their farming skills and to gain intimate knowledge of how the surrounding environment provided a sustainable lifestyle for centuries.

Dogs, Rabbits, and “Poop Soup” Faced with rabbits, Gerry Gerry Quotskuyva Quotskuyva, also a multi-media Hopi artist, suggested an old Hopi rabbit-proofing remedy. Gerry’s grandfather and other Hopi gardeners, who used dog poop mixed with water around gardens and even without fences, never had a rabbit problem.

Rattlesnakes and Dogs – A Dangerous Combination

By Amber Polo Rattlesnake bites are often debilitating or fatal, resulting in suffering to dogs and owners, and expensive treatments.

Arizona is home to venomous snakes: thirteen varieties of rattlesnakes and the Western Coral Snake. All are dangerous to dogs. The Western Diamondback Rattler is most common of the rattlers and the Western Coral Snake is rarely encountered.

80% of bites are to a dog’s head because dogs are curious and get too close. Snakes strike and inject venom through hollow fangs like hypodermic needles. Bites happen quickly. Pain comes later. So bitten dogs don’t learn to avoid snakes.

When asked about rattlesnake vaccines, Reed Scudder DVM of The Village Vet in Sedona says, “There is no clinical proof that the snake vaccine works, even though many veterinarians claim that vaccinated dogs exhibit milder symptoms when bitten. Dogs still need medical attention. Some symptoms of snake bite are redness at the site, puncture wounds, swelling, bruising, tissue necrosis, pain, etc.”

According to Jim Walkington of Viper Voidance of New River, who’s been training dogs to avoid snakes for over sixteen years, “Only rattlesnakes smell like rattlesnakes.” He believes you can’t use a dead snake, a snake of another genus, a muzzled snake, or rattles glued to an electric toothbrush to teach a dog that rattlesnakes are serious trouble. “The last thing you want to do is teach a dog that a snake is safe.”

Dogs are curious and use their noses to an amazing degree.

Rattlers don’t always rattle.

Therefore, using dogs’ sense of smell to keep them safe makes sense. After avoidance training

with a shock collar, a dog associates the smell, sound, and sight of a snake with a very unpleasant experience.

And from then on will run from rattlers and often get their owners to safety, too.

Walkington, author of “What the Lord Said About Labs: And Other Dog Stories from Rattlesnake University,” calls himself a crusty, nonconforming, dog-loving, desert-dwelling, selective recluse. His Viper Voidance snakes were used in the movie “Sedona: the Movie.” Walkington says that when he had his own dogs snake-proofed in 1998, he saw this method work. He estimates he’s snake-proofed over 4,000 dogs.

Many owners and trainers believe shock collars or e-collars, used professionally, are the only safe humane method of creating a lasting negative association between the smell of snake and danger.

Dog trainer Victoria Rawson (Unleashed Dog Training www. unleasheddogtrainingaz.com) says, “When I moved to Arizona with my dogs, I wanted a qualified snake avoidance trainer that was a knowledgeable dog handler, one able to read each of my dogs and know the level the e-collar must be set for each dog to understand the danger and avoid the venomous snake. Snake avoidance training for our dogs also can alert us to danger and keep us safe. Every time I go out with my snake avoidance trained dogs during snake season I pay close attention to their behavior.”

Most snake bites occur close to home. Arizona owners of at-risk dogs need to investigate snake avoidance training and talk to their veterinarians about vaccination.

Taking Back Your House

remain long and relaxed at your side. You want your dog to pay attention to your leg and the direction it is going. Encourage your dog to attend to you with “Here or Watch Me” and a leg tap. You want him to choose you over the competition you have of other dogs, blowing leaves, people, cars, etc.

Here is a simple question for you to ask yourself. Does your dog live with you or do you live with your dog?

It is very important the dog knows whose house it is they live in and the answer to them is that it is yours!

Your dog can only walk as fast as you do. An extended leash only creates more excitement which inhibits the development of his self-confidence and his confidence in your leadership.

When your dog pulls, practice Wacky Walk - turn away from dog – turn into dog – turn directions sharply – zigzag – OR stop dead until the leash slacks- have fun but keep walking.

Keep dog focused on you with a treat or happy reward and Watch Me. When you turn away from your dog, call Fido to you with a treat or other happy thing.

This will begin to teach recall or come.

Please keep in mind that excited dogs are not happy dogs. They are simply that, excited. Excitement leads to all number of behaviors, most of which are not what we want to deal with.

An excited dog goes over his threshold of impulse control. It is important for us to assist our dogs to become balanced and regain impulse and frustration control. We do not do that by acting excitedly ourselves or by putting tension on the dog’s leash or neck in some way. We do it by a consistent body presentation of calm and direct attention to the situation our dog is dealing with.

Allow yourself to own the toys you let your dog play with, which means you can take them away. You own the leashes you walk your dog with, which means they are not always associated with a walk. Place them over your shoulder or lay them on the floor randomly. Think of other things your dog might associate as his and simply claim them: your bed, dog beds, couch.

You need not be a controlling enigma to your dog just a quiet presence to help him understand that you manage all things in his environment. In doing so, you will have a much more peace filled and well-mannered dog who is a joy to accompany you anywhere, including answering the door.

Rays of Hope for the Animal Welfare Industry

By Rebecca Poling With a theme from The Wizard of Oz, a recent conference dedicated to improving animal welfare offered rays of hope for those who work in the field, plus recommendations for how to keep the positive momentum rolling.

SPECIAL FEATURE

The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement’s Annual Leadership Conference took place over a three-day weekend in November in Kansas City, championing the traits of courage brains, and heart as valuable tools for animal welfare professionals.

The conference focused on high-level executive training and industry-specific issues from a 20,000 ft view – kind of a State of the Union for the animal welfare industry.

Some of the positive trends from the event included: • Euthanasia declines. Progress continues to be made toward saving more lives and reducing the number of unwanted pets.

In 1975, 15 million pets were euthanized nationwide. By 2017 that number dropped to 1.5 million.

• Legislative action. Progress continues to be made on the legislative front as well. In 1986 only 4 states had felony animal cruelty laws, and the rest merely misdemeanor penalties. By 2017, all 50 states had some type of felony animal cruelty laws in place.

• Purebreds at shelters. Recent research confirms that on average 25% of pets come from shelters. But estimates of the number of purebreds in shelters has dropped to 5%. Some possible reasons for that drop - DNA tests have made breed identification much more accurate; there has been a gradual swing in societal attitudes toward valuing dogs as individuals rather than clones; the general public seems more aware of the plight of puppy mill dogs; and educated buyers realize there are potentially increased health risks with some purebred dogs.

• Transfer boom. Shelter intake is declining nationwide, with some shelters in the northern part of the country finding themselves without higher-demand pets like puppies and small dogs. One reason: In the northern part of the country, harsher climates reduce the number of litters born in fall and winter, while many southern states experience “puppy and kitten season” year-round. This disparity between north and south has led to an explosion in the number of transfer programs - programs that reduce overcrowding by moving excess companion animals from overflowing shelters in the south to areas in the north.

• Pet ownership and poverty. As an industry we are starting to challenge the traditional view of pet ownership. According

the ASPCA, recent studies have shown that financial circumstances alone are not reliable indicators of the capacity to love and care for a companion animal. There are a variety of challenging circumstances that can cause pets to lose their homes. Providing resources to help owners keep their pets, when it is best for the animal to remain in his or her home, has become a major focus of many organizations, including ASPCA, American Humane, and the wildly successful Pets For Life program from HSUS. These programs have caused a shift in attitudes away from preconceived notions about a person’s financial circumstances and toward a more holistic focus on a pet parent’s ability to take good care of a pet. “Just as there is no reason to believe that those living in persistent poverty (or those facing temporary financial hardship) are any less committed to their pets, there is no data to support the notion that they do not desire to provide the care their pets need,” according to the ASPCA. But challenges remain: • Shelter costs climb. The cost of sheltering is skyrocketing, up 250% since 2007. Public expectations have caused a shift in mission for many organizations, away from a strict focus on public safety, to a combined public safety/animal welfare focus. This means pets are staying longer in shelters and being treated for more serious injuries and illnesses.

Increased veterinary costs, combined with longer shelter stays, have led to increased costs per pet. Some non-profit animal organizations have been forced to consolidate services and resources in order to keep the doors open.

• Breed fallacies. Even though research has consistently shown that visual breed identification is often inaccurate, breed is still foremost in the public’s mind when it comes to a potential new family member. The industry has known for a while that a dog’s genes alone don’t determine that pet’s personality environmental conditions affect behavior as well, particularly in younger pets.

Ongoing research indicates that even cloned dogs do not have the same personalities, nor do same-breed puppies raised under identical environmental conditions. But that message isn’t reaching the general public. The first thing potential adopters often ask is “what breed is that dog”, and that’s a question that is becoming harder and harder to answer accurately without DNA testing (which few non-profits can afford).

• Breed disease. Sadly, we’re finding that through the breeding process, many purebred dogs, bred mainly for the visual characteristics required for registration or competition, have inadvertently picked up non-visual genes that predispose them to serious disease. Retrievers, Rottweilers, Beagles and some terriers have become more likely to develop cancer than other breeds. Siberian Huskies are more predisposed to Autoimmune Disorders, and German Shepherds to hip

dysplasia. As the instance of these diseases in specific breeds increases, and breeders continue to be unwilling to breed outside the lineage, shelters fear the result may be increased intake of unhealthy dogs of certain breeds, further elevating the already skyrocketing costs of veterinary care.

• Love people, too. More and more we’re struggling to recruit people to work in animal welfare who are capable of focusing on people as well as the animals. Customer service is a key component of increasing adoptions, so saving more lives means it is critical to find workers who love animals, but not more than people.

Looking to the future: • Reducing shelter stress. New research into shelter dogs seems to suggest that stress levels in dogs, as measured by the cortisone levels in their blood, actually decrease the longer they stay in the shelter. Further, studies have found that just one night out of the shelter can reduce those cortisone levels even further. An exciting new study on the subject is taking place right here in our own backyard. The Canine Science Collaboratory at ASU has launched a comprehensive study on the impacts of three types of fostering: 1) Field trips: a few hours out of the shelter, 2) Sleepovers: a night or two away from the shelter, and 3) Longer-term fostering: stays in a foster home of a week or longer. Results of this study will help animal welfare organizations further improve the quality of care for homeless pets.

• Dog bites. Some organizations across the country are reporting dramatic increases in surrenders for aggression and dog bites. That doesn’t appear to be the case locally, but it will be interesting to see the result of research just starting that will try to identify the cause.

• Behavior testing. Long-established methods of behavioral testing for shelter pets are being challenged as well. Years ago, battery testing for behavior was the gold standard in shelters and rescues; but recently, standard assessment exercises have come under new scrutiny. According to the ASPCA,

“Behavior assessments have not proven highly accurate or precise when used to predict aggression after adoption. It has been suggested that a significant number of dogs exhibiting aggression on an assessment do not do so in a home.” By definition, assessments try to predict the future. But without a crystal ball, that can be tough.

One thing remains the same - the Five Freedoms, and The Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines that are modeled after it, are still the guiding principle in animal welfare.

Originally developed approximately 25 years ago by the Farm Animal Welfare Council in an effort to address the public’s concern about the welfare of livestock, the Five Freedoms provides a constant reminder of what the proper treatment of animals is, regardless of the species.

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor.

2. Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from Pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to express normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.

5. Freedom from Fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

One of my favorite quotes is from Winston Churchill, “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” It will be interesting to see what next year brings - where we are in the Fall of 2019, what progress has been made and what new research and improved data will tell us in our journey to save more lives.

We were surprised to find that the City of Mesa, Arizona, spreads from the rugged Superstition Mountains in the northeast to the open agricultural lands of Queen Creek in the south. The area is très pooch-friendly with many restaurants and breweries that give a tail-wagging welcome. Two off-leash dog parks are located in Mesa, but we wanted to get out into the “Supes” or Superstition Mountains and explore some new-to-us Sonoran Desert trails. www.visitmesa.com

SPECIAL FEATURE

Ticks are arachnid parasites which spread disease by feeding upon host blood. The tick, itself, transmits disease, not the host.

Tick-borne diseases are contacted only when the tick pierces the host skin, buries its head, and gorges itself by sucking the hosts blood.

In the United States, the tick population has exploded resulting in a concurrent increase in reported human tick-borne cases with 27,388 cases in 2004 to 48,610 in 2016. This rise in human tickborne diseases has also occurred in Arizona with an increase from 23 reported cases in 2006 to 60 in 2017. During this time, there were 562 confirmed human tick-borne diseases reported to ADHS. However, many cases are not diagnosed, confirmed or reported, and public health authorities estimate that the actual number of human tick cases, in Arizona, may be as high as 5600. A major factor contributing to this growing epidemic is climate change. Ticks only bite hosts at temperatures above 45 degrees F. Therefore, longer and warmer temperatures enable ticks to move into new areas and thrive in environments which were previously inhospitable to tick survival. Additionally, the tick season is extended which increases the time humans and their companion animals may come in contact with ticks. Finally, greater human use of areas where ticks live, as well as relocation of homes into these areas, lead to more contact with wildlife which carry ticks.

In the US, there are at least 5 types of ticks which are known to transmit 16 illnesses to humans. In Arizona, the 562 confirmed human tick illnesses included: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (62.5%), Lyme Disease (29.5%), Relapsing Fever (3.9%), Ehrlichiosis/Anaplasmosis (3.6%), and Colorado Tick Fever (0.5%). Common tick hosts include pets (dogs and cats), livestock and wild animals (coyote, wolf, deer, elk, horses, cows, sheep, goats, raccoons, rabbits), rodents (mice, rats, squirrels, prairie dogs, chipmunks), birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Only female ticks spread disease and must feed on a host’s blood to survive. The female tick moves from host to host during each stage of her life cycle. Disease transmission occurs as the infected female bites the different hosts. Male ticks attach to a host but do not feed, and die following mating. After mating, the female requires a large blood meal, drops off the host, crawls to a hiding place where she lays thousands of fertilized eggs, and dies.

Outdoors: Most ticks prefer to live in warm, moist outdoor areas. They are not very mobile and do not jump or fly, but they can cling to almost anything. Ticks inhabit woody, brushy areas with tall grass, leaf piles, or other vegetation. They crawl up to the tips of the grass or brush and hold on to the vegetation with their rear legs as they stretch out their front legs to hook and grab onto the host’s fur, hair, or clothing. This behavior is called “questing”. Ticks also have heat, moisture, and vibration sensors which enable them to latch onto the host’s body.

Indoors: Even though ticks prefer outdoors, they can get inside a home. Ticks will hitchhike into the home by attaching to a pet, a person, or clothing. They fall off, usually after feeding, and then 22 Flagstaff-Sedona Dog

crawl around looking for another host, a suitable environment (such as clothing or any clutter on the floor or in hampers), or a way to the outside.

When ticks are present in the environment, humans and pets should be checked daily for ticks which can be found anywhere on the host body. In humans, special attention should be given to checking the scalp, behind the ears, the back of the neck, waist, armpits, groin, and the back of the knees. In dogs, the tick search should begin by feeling along the head, back and belly. Special attention should be given to: in and around the ears, around the eyelids, under the collar, around the perianal area, under the front legs, between the back legs, and between the toes. Ticks are the size of a pinhead and may or may not be visible, until it swells with blood.

Any time a tick is found, it should be immediately removed, for decreasing time it is on the host limits transmission of disease.

Care should be taken when removing ticks to avoid any direct contact with the tick’s blood which can transmit infection. Wearing disposable latex gloves can help to decrease direct contact. After tick removal, the tweezers used should be washed with soap and water, as well as one’s hands (even with glove use). ADHS recommends that tick removal should consist of the following: 1. Use tweezers to grasp tick as close to the skin’s surface and to the tick’s mouthparts as possible.

2. Pull gently straight-out. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you are unable to remove the mouth easily with clean tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal. Do not use matches, cigarettes, fingernail polish, petroleum jelly, etc. to remove or suffocate the tick.

3. Do not squeeze or crush the tick.

4. After removing the tick, clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, an iodine scrub, or soap and water.

5. Flush the tick down the toilet. Do not throw a live tick in the trash.

Arizona Department of Health Services Other common suggestions include: using small forceps to remove ticks and deposing ticks by dunking them in rubbing alcohol or wrapping the tick on tape. The ticks can then be placed into a sealed bag and deposed in the trash.

Signs/symptoms of tick disease in humans include: Fever, rash, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle pain, loss of appetite, and conjunctival injection (red eyes).

Signs/symptoms of tick disease in dogs include: Fever, loss of appetite, swollen lymph nodes, joint swelling and pain, anemia, skin irritation/infection, and tick paralysis. Tick paralysis often resolves after the tick is removed.

Diagnosis: Recently, very simple, sensitive, and specific blood tests have become available to assist veterinarians to diagnose tick-borne diseases. There are two kinds of blood tests: PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays and serology (blood) tests.

Both tests identify the presence of antibodies in the blood

which are triggered to fight infection. The PCR (or Tick panel) is a rapid blood test for multiple tick diseases. It is widely available and easily performed in the veterinary office. SNAP or Accouple tests are examples of PCR tests. A serology test can be sent to an external laboratory to identify and/or confirm the tick disease. Your veterinarian will review the dog’s symptoms, history, and geographic location to recommend if one or both tests should be done.

Treatment: Dependent upon the tick disease identified, veterinarians can prescribe an antibiotic course lasting 2-6 weeks to treat the infection. Other complementary treatments may be suggested to support the infected animal’s immune-system and promote skin healing, including shampoos, a topical parasiticide, omega 3, and probiotics.

Screening for tick disease: With the availability of rapid and inoffice PCR assays, some veterinarians now recommend routine yearly testing for tick disease, especially in endemic areas where there are greater risks of tick infection. Even though these tests are extremely sensitive, there can be false positive and false negative tests. In the healthy dog, a positive test may indicate that the dog was exposed to a tick disease but able to clear the infection without treatment. A false negative may occur when the dog is infected but has not built up adequate antibodies to turn the test positive.

Prevention: • Prevention must begin with reducing the tick habitat by clearing or cutting grasses, brush, weeds, and other vegetation in the yard. Old furniture, mattresses, or trash can give ticks a place to hide and should be cleared. Wood piles can conceal ticks or tick infested rodents, and wood should be stacked neatly and kept in a dry place away from the home.

• Indoor ticks can be eliminated by vacuuming the home daily, washing blankets, cushions, and bed linin in hot water, and spraying tick repellent on curtains, mattresses, closets, blankets and cabinets. When coming in from outdoors, dry clothing can be tumbled in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks.

Wet clothing requires a longer dryer time. When washing clothing or bedding, a high-hot water temperature is required to kill ticks.

• Pesticides can be sprayed or dusted to kill ticks and eggs, both outdoors and indoors.

• When walking outdoors, avoid areas where ticks live, wear light colored clothes to enable ticks to be seen, fold pants into boots or socks to keep ticks from creeping into the legs of pants, and use insect repellents to resist ticks.

• Shower within two hours after being outdoors. This can reduce the risk of tick-borne disease by washing off unattached ticks

and is a good way to do a body tick check.

• Check your pet for ticks every day and remove any tick immediately.

• Use tick collars, spot-on (skin treatments), or oral products to kill ticks and prevent tick infestation of pets. All products have been shown to be effective.

• Ticks prefer weak hosts. Keep your dog’s immune system strong by feeding a nutritionally balanced diet.

• A Lyme Disease vaccine is available for dogs and is administered yearly.

Caymus Finds His “Pawpose” idea what was going on but I felt excited.

Suddenly, the big bird thing started to move. It went faster and faster and soon it started to float into the sky.

Hi! My name is Caymus and I’m a two-year-old English Goldendoodle.

The minute that I was born, on December 12th, 2016 in Alabama, I knew that I was meant for greatness! I knew that I had a “pawpose”.

I couldn’t put my paw on it, but I knew in time that I would be fulfilling my “pawpose” with my new human mom.

Before I was able to meet her, I spent eight weeks with my dog mom, one brother and three sisters. We played, we ate and slept a lot to become big and strong. When I was eight-weeks-old, I said good-bye to my dog family and headed to Puppy Prep School. In those eight weeks, I was learning the basics: crate training, pottytraining and no nibbling on humans.

I was so excited that I couldn’t stop my tail from wagging. I wiggled and wagged so hard she had to set me down. I ran into another room and there she was-my new human mom, Michelle. She was kneeling on the floor calling me to her, “Hi Caymus! It is so nice to finally meet you. Come here sweet boy.” I couldn’t run fast enough.

My little puppy paws were running faster than my wobbly body could keep up. I was all over the place.

Then, I jumped into her lap and she gave me the biggest hug and she was crying. I didn’t understand why she was crying. Why was she sad? However, I noticed a big smile on her face and she was also laughing. I decided that her tears were happy tears. I heard my trainer say, “Caymus is a very confident puppy. He is the first I’ve seen like that from such a litter. He doesn’t shy away from much and he listens very well.”

My new mom said, “I’m so happy to hear that. It’s a great attribute to have to become a therapy dog.”

Therapy Dog! What is that?

Is that my new “pawpose”?

Is this the greatness that was meant for me? After we said our good-byes to my trainer, my new adventure began as Caymus First Flight mom drove us to the airport.

I strutted through the terminal and all these new faces came up to pet me and to just to say hello.

I rode an elevator and a tram for the first time.

Then, my mom and I walked onto a big thing that looked like a bird and we sat down. She buckled herself in and put me on her lap and turned me to look outside the window. I looked down and saw people scurrying around with cars, ramps and luggage. I had no

Caymus and Charleston When he was feeling good, he would even play with me. Charleston was fifteen-yearsold and had cancer. Mom and dad were very sad that Charleston was sick. However, I didn’t understand what all that meant. For the first few weeks, we were all getting used to our new family unit and routine.

In May, we all headed to Flagstaff, Arizona for the summer. Another new adventure! Yippie! I really liked the place that Mom, Dad and Charleston had in Flagstaff. Now it was mine too! I loved running free and smelling the pine trees with Charleston. I loved smelling new smells and meeting new critters such as elk, squirrels and chipmunks.

SPECIAL FEATURE

One April morning, when I was four-months-old, I knew something big was going to happen. I could just feel it. My trainer scooped me up in her arms and told me a secret, “Guess what Caymus? You are going to meet your human mom today and she is going to take you to your new home.”

My mom said, “It is okay Caymus.

Everything is alright Caymus on Plane and you are safe with me.” I took it all in and looked out the window for a while. Then I fell sleep on mom’s lap. I slept most of the flight and when we landed, we were in Scottsdale, Arizona. We drove in a car to my new home and I met my new human dad, Steve. I also met my new older dog brother Charleston. I was so excited to have another dog around.

Even if he was much older than me.

One day, a nice woman showed up to our door and Mom let her in. As she walked through the door, Mom looked at me and said, “Caymus, this is Laura. She is a dog trainer and she is here to help you and I learn the proper commands and behaviors to become a Pet Therapy Team.” I didn’t really understand what a Pet Therapy Team was, but I trusted Mom and she seemed very excited, so I was excited as well. My “Pawpose” was to be a Pet Therapy team with my mom Michelle.

(St. Martins, 2018) Lorin Lindner was helping homeless veterans on the streets of Los Angeles when Sammy, a loud pink Moluccan cockatoo, came into her life. Learning about the plight of abandoned parrots, who can live 80 years and bond with their owners, she became dedicated to help these social intelligent birds.

The two parts of her life came together when she founded the Birds of a Feather program as part of Serenity Park, a sanctuary on the grounds of the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare Center, helping veterans with PTSD and other trauma.

Serenity Park Sanctuary tries to duplicate the life of a parrot in the wild. Veterans care for the parrots in large outdoor aviaries where birds forage trays of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts with interaction with human companions at the parrots’ discretion. The veterans in the program are given specialized training to develop job skills and many continue into careers that benefit animal welfare. Serenity Park is under the umbrella of the Association for Parrot C.A.R.E., the non-profit charity that founded the sanctuary. Visit the website: www.parrotcare.org Linder met her husband Matt Simmons when he volunteered to use parrot therapy to help his PTSD. Together they established Lockwood Animal Rescue Center (LARC) in Ventura County, California, and turned their attention to the plight of wolves and wolfdogs, often “trophy pets” that end up in shelters. LARC provides employment in an outdoor therapeutic setting for combat veterans who care for wolves and wolfdogs. Most of their animals come from family surrenders or shelters who cannot legally adopt out wolfdogs but can offer them to a sanctuary. LARC brings veterans together with wild and part wild animals who share traumatic experiences. Lockwood is the focus of Animal Planet’s “Wolves and Warriors” show, featuring the wolves and wolfdogs from Lockwood Sanctuary and the veterans who rescue and care for them.

Dr. Lorin Lindner initiated the use of animals to treat trauma in veterans at the VA Hospital in Los Angeles—the first program of its kind. Her work focuses on the two sanctuaries, LARC and Serenity Park. Matthew Simmons, Navy veteran, is the COO of LARC and Serenity Park and is co-creator of the WolfGuard team. Matthew understands that there isn’t a cure for PTSD, but realizes that working with the animals can make all the difference in a veteran’s life. Linder and Simmons live in the mountains above Los Angeles with rescued wolfdogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes, horses, dogs and, of course, parrots. A portion of all profits from the book will go to support the parrot sanctuary.

Interview with Lionheart, 7 Centers Yoga Temple Cat

By Amber Polo In 2004 a kitten from Camp Verde needed a home. The owner felt this kitten had a destiny and when she heard 7 Centers needed a temple cat she felt “Lionheart” had found his dharma. His journey from arrival in a laundry basket to Sri Guruji Lionheart, Sedona’s most honored cat. Touched the lives of many yogis Interview with Sri Lionheart AP: What are the duties of a Temple Cat? Do you have advice for a novice temple cat on the path?

In modern day, temple cats are also protectors and guardians of the temple. Kitten initiates are trained to appear to be sleeping but their third eye is open for intruders like crickets, mice and bold chipmunks to be chased. At 7 Centers (as a school of yoga), the temple cat is also training to model yogic poses like cat stretch and lion’s pose and learn to apply yogic philosophy to everyday life.

For those novices who want to initiate as a temple cat, there are three important qualities to cultivate: to have an open heart, a sense of adventure and to be curious and love learning.

AP: Can you offer comfort to cats and dogs looking for homes?

SL: When visitors come to the animal shelter, make eye contact, grin and be confident of how great you are and how lucky anyone would be to have you as their pet and companion. Trust that you will land in the best and right home no matter how long it takes.

SL: Sometimes appearances can be deceiving.

People see me as a rather large and plumpy orange tabby cat with green eyes but our history and inner world may be very different from what we look like. In eastern Appearances can be deceiving philosophy, all beings reincarnate again and again in many forms. This is known as the wheel of life- a journey of karma and dharma. Sometimes especially in meditation, particular past life memories surface without bidding.

In my experience, they have significance and meaning for the current life. Yes~ I have been the male lion head of a pride and my current name, Lionheart comes from that life.

AP: Can you confirm or deny that once when you ventured out to minister to the felines at the Humane Society of Sedona you were incarcerated?

SL: So the story goes....When I was less than 6 months old I was exploring the neighborhood which includes the local Humane Society of Sedona just under the hedge and down the slope from the temple parking lot. Not even 50 yards and I walked up to check out the cat bros and was promptly captured by as a “stray” because I didn’t have a collar or a license tag. Then I was put into a cage as a homeless cat. Luckily one of the volunteers (a mother of a yoga teacher) recognized me and put a call in for me to be bailed out for $25.

So - yes, I have been incarcerated in my youth and I wear a collar and tag which I “lose” outside about every six months.

SL: According to Lopsang Rampa, author of “The Third Eye,” in the old days of Tibet , the temple cats were fierce guardians of the masses of uncut brilliant gems strewn around the holy figures of Buddha on the altars. Nearly black Siamese The iconic Guruji Lionheart cats were often chosen for their photo by Dawn C. Weise legendary voices, blue eyes and long whip-like tails. Only monks who personally knew the cats could approach them when they were on duty prowling and protecting the temple.

AP: Is it true in a past life you were a male lion, head of a pride?

Ruth Hartung, better known as Sraddhasagar, is the owner and director of 7 Centers Yoga Arts and founder of the non-profit Mystis, which supports outreach yoga programs. Sometimes when she travels to teach, she leaves Lionheart to protect and guard the temple while gone. Lionheart is assisted by Xena (Warrior Princess) Junior Temple Cat and Temple Dog Jackson who shows up regularly as the subject of Lionheart’s blogs to contribute a dog’s perspective.

AP: Do you have wisdom to share with those humans who work to end the suffering of animals?

SL: I would ask Do you have any wisdom to share with animals who are trying to help the suffering of humans? There is profound expansion in consciousness that happens in the exchange of love between animals and humans that is beneficial for both and for the planet. Ultimately this love is greater than the suffering.

Tyler: Sweet Friend And Loyal Companion

We all know that we will most certainly outlive our pets. The average lifespan of most dogs and cats is usually between 10-15 years. Most of us have had a succession of animals in our lives, but that doesn’t make their passing any easier. Especially if that passing comes suddenly, in what seems like the prime of life.

My golden retriever rescue, Tyler, was the picture of health and vigor. The vet had recently claimed that he was more like a 7 or 8 year-old than his actual age of 11. I knew the statistics on cancer in goldens, but hoped that my sweet boy would defy the odds. He hiked and swam and camped all over Arizona and the West with me, along with his chocolate lab sister, Kodi, also a rescue. His temperament was classic golden — loving, sweet, goofy and playful. Everyone he met loved him, even the two resident cats who shared the house with him.

Just before Thanksgiving, we attended Yappy Hour, a unique hour only once a week where dogs in Sedona can run free on the grassy athletic field at the Posse Grounds field. The dogs and their owners love this event which is so different from the typical dog park. Afterwards, with another friend and her goldendoodle, we did a wonderful short hike near the Village of Oak Creek; 3 dogs and two ladies. After that beautiful morning, Tyler collapsed suddenly and I was able to get him to the vet within the hour in a semi-conscious state.

The vet diagnosed hemangiosarcoma, cancer of the spleen, where there are no symptoms until the animal hemorrhages internally and quickly succumbs. The shock of it all was overwhelming. Within a few short hours, my active healthy dog was gone.

The memories and experiences of the joy that a beloved pet brings never goes away. It stays with you always. Kodi and the cats and I miss our silly boy immensely. I have decided that even with the cancer statistics with golden retrievers being at 60%, I love the breed and want to have another golden in my life. Recently I applied to AZ Golden Rescue to foster/and or adopt another golden. Hope springs eternal— no matter what my next dog is, golden or otherwise, I look forward to the companionship and unconditional love that only a pet can give.

The Story of Maggie, a 9-Year-Old, Spayed Female Golden Retriever In the winter of 2009, Christmas came early for our family with the arrival of our beloved golden retriever, Maggie. She is one of a litter of 10 born in Anchorage, Alaska.

My husband John is convinced that Maggie picked him as her companion.

When we went to see the litter for the first time, all the other puppies were playfully nipping at John’s pant leg to garner his attention while Maggie waited for John to pick her up, so she could snuggle in the palm of his large hand—it was love at first sight and they have been inseparable ever since.

Whether it’s working around the house, driving in the truck or simply going on walks, one can find the two of them together.

Maggie is not a typical retriever, she likes to look at water but not jump in and the only thing she seems to retrieve is her human family. If we get too far apart from each other on our daily walks, she will take her leash in her mouth and use

it to corral us so that we are next to each other much to the delight of bystanders. Perhaps it’s because she was born on a snowy day, Maggie loves winter. The first snowfall is her favorite. As soon as she sees the first snowflakes, she sits patiently by the door waiting to go outside and catch the flakes on her tongue. When the snow is deep enough, she will spend hours burrowing her nose in the snow and jumping through the berms. The long summer days are spent at her favorite lakes watching the water fowl and visiting with all the people walking their dogs.

Our family recently relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico and it has been an adjustment for her. The snow melts quicker than she can catch it, and the green grass and trees have been replaced by shrubs and desert. At first, it was quite the adjustment but with the arrival of Spring, prairie dogs and peacocks have captured her imagination. She follows the sun around the house and

has made friends with every neighbor she has met. Her gentle nature and affinity for belly rubs has endeared her to many that meet her.

In October of 2017, we decided to take advantage of the cooler temps and drive our camper to Sedona for a few days.

After a day of sightseeing and hiking with Maggie in beautiful Sedona, we made it back to our campsite just in time for her dinner.

John realized something was wrong when she refused to eat, and became very lethargic.

We drove an hour to Flagstaff to have Maggie seen at Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center of Northern Arizona.

Thank goodness we did!

Maggie was running a fever and clearly in distress. Dr. Wassef did a thorough evaluation and performed an ultrasound of Maggie’s abdomen. Excessive fluid was present, and he recommended immediate exploratory surgery.

That recommendation saved

Maggie’s life. She had sepsis, her abdominal cavity was full of fluids and her spleen was dying.

Dr. Wassef removed the spleen, did a thorough exam and flushed her abdominal cavity.

The next day, he operated on her again to flush her abdominal cavity and check her vital organs. Maggie’s pancreas was severely inflamed, and she was not interested in eating. We ended up staying an extra four days so that his expert staff could provide care to stabilize Maggie.

On the last day in town before heading back to Santa Fe, we stopped by Dr. Wassef’s office to say goodbye. All the techs and front staff came out to give Maggie belly rubs much to her delight. While we may never learn what triggered this event, we are very grateful Dr. Wassef and his staff were there to provide compassionate care to our beloved Maggie.
