Senior Bartus Taylor uses the Internet that the school provides to complete his schoolwork. Jillian Kurtz Co-Editor in Chief Throughout the past two weeks, students have been reporting a blockage in the content that is able to be accessed through the school’s WiFi. Florida Southern College has a bulk account through Spectrum Busines for their wireless services. The plan that the school provides users with is on Spectrum’s “fiber-rich network” which “supports more connected devices,” according to the Spectrum website. “We were trying to block some more general pornography and that type of thing, but it had an impact on YouTube and as soon as we found that out, we changed the settings,” Assistant Vice

President of Technology John Thomas said. “The one that was reported to us was a political speech and the speech was okay, but it was blocking the comments. We don’t want to block that stuff.” Atley Brown is a junior Musical Theatre major and has experienced blocked websites on the school’s WiFi. She looks up specific repertoire pieces for herself and has not been able to reach some “riskier [risqué] Broadway videos or explicit songs.” “The WiFi on campus is extremely frustrating,” Brown said. “We pay a lot to be here and need the internet to be able to do our assignments. With the blocks I am unable to have everything I need for research and also just living my life.” When trying to access urbandictionary. com, an error that pops up is a “Fortinet
secure DNS service portal” error. Fortinet is a cybersecurity company that markets network security to the “digitally evolving higher education industry.” After being brought to Thomas’ attention, the Southern recieved a follow up from Thomas stating that the classification of this site has since been changed and is now accessible through the network. “We do block very very little on the firewall because we try to keep it as open as possible,” Thomas said. “The one main area where we block stuff is what’s called BitTorn, which is historically used to download stuff illegally.” Thomas has requested that if students find a website that is being blocked, to send him any information and he will look into the problem.
on the council for three years. Whether recruitment is formal or informal, it is just part of the process. “My biggest concern is making sure freshmen remain safe between recruitment periods,” Hill said. Sigma Chi president Max Giard said fall recruitment is more laid back since there are not as many people going through recruitment. He said this semester’s recruitment class will be smaller, but spring could bring 20 or more people.
looking for people who will be a positive influence on the chapter and meshes well with the brothers. Pi Kappa Alpha President Paul Cribbs said the fraternities are looking for people who may have already gone through the recruitment process, and may not have found their “fit.” “We are looking for hard-working young men who have a passion to improve themselves and others around them,” Cribbs said. Alex Bruner, Theta Chi’s president, said spring recruitment gives the organizations more time to get to know the guys who will be going though spring recruitment and vice versa. Bruner said that fall recruitment feels less structured, which can be good and bad. “On the one hand, it makes things feel more natural,” Bruner said. “On the other the structure can help facilitate those connections.” Fall recruitment events are posted on Engage. Florida Southern College’s Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity (AGR) hosted a food drive following Dorian’s landfall in the Bahamas as a category five hurricane. They collected canned food items, cases of water, and boxes of soap, which they delivered to the Lakeland Airport on Sept. 11, in an effort to send supplies to people in the Bahamas affected by the hurricane. AGR asked people to drop off supplies at FSC on-campus house, inhabited by multiple AGR members, located in Frank Lloyd Wright Way. Although, they don’t know the amount of items that they collected, their front porch was stacked full of water bottle cases, which blocked the view of the front door, and the living room of the house was also full of supplies, making it hard to walk around the house. “It was just kind of an idea we came up with last minute,” AGR’s Bennet Rodriguez said. “We didn’t see anyone else from the school who was doing it, so we did it.” Although this event isn’t related to their philanthropy, according to Rodriguez, AGR is thinking about hosting events similar to this one every year. “I’m from Fort Lauderdale, so I do know a lot of people who are from the Bahamas, who travel to the Bahamas,” Rodriguez said. “A lot of my friends have gone over to help out people over there, so I see their snapchats and their instagrams and it’s wrecked over there.”
Fraternities hold deferred fall recruitment
Abby McHenry Features Editor
Florida Southern fraternities hosted fall recruitment events this past week and will continue into this weekend with three events for each fraternity. Recruitment is deferred in the fall this year, while regular recruitment will be held in the spring. Freshmen cannot receive bids for fall recruitment, but can come to the recruitment events and join in the spring if they wish. Interfraternity Council President Senior Nelson Hill said each fraternity can host up to three recruitment events and every fraternity is participating. In the spring, fraternities are able to host up to five events. Anyone can attend Greek events whether recruitment or philanthropy week based. Hill said transfer students and any students that have a semester under their belt are eligible to accept a bid. Hill said recruitment for him is just routine at this point because he has been
