Girl in the Mirror: Eating Disorders ROOM : COMMODORE With eating disorders on the rise, and being seen as early as first grade, it is very important to understand the different types of eating disorders and how to recognize them in children. This presentation will not only discuss the most prevalent eating disorders, but will also address some of the body image struggles that lay under the eating disorders. We will address what messages young women are receiving, where they are receiving them, and how this can affect their body image. Counseling Hispanic/Latino Students in K-12 Schools Problem Addressing: As the nation's fastest-growing minority group and representing over a quarter of the new students enrolled in Florida's schools, professional school counselors throughout the state are likely to work with Hispanic/Latino students in their schools. In order to ensure effective inclusion and advocacy for this very diverse group of students, it is imperative that school counselors understand the cultural values, academic strengths, and the societal and academic challenges that shape the school experiences of Florida's Hispanic/Latino students.

Solution Strategy: Research regarding the academic strengths and struggles, cultural values, ethnic identity development, and other relevant topics allowed the presenters to offer implications for counselors of Hispanic/Latino students. Implications and considerations for legal/ethical practice, individual and group counseling, and strategies aligned with the academic, career development, and personal/social domains are provided.

Effect of Student Success Skills on Pro-social and Bullying Behavior Problem Addressing: This study examined differences in pro-social behaviors, bullying behaviors, engagement in school success skills, and perceptions of classroom climate between students in the treatment and comparison groups. A pre-post quasi-experimental design was followed employing various measures of behavior. Data supported SSS as a viable intervention for positively affecting student behavior.

Fidelity Matters: Implementing Interventions as Designed Problem Addressing: Treatment fidelity guidelines are intended to ensure that school counselor interventions are implemented as designed. When evidence-based interventions are implemented with fidelity school counselors increase the likelihood of obtaining positive results on outcome measures which mirror the results of published research. Despite the important role treatment fidelity plans in conducting research limited attention and professional development is devoted to the topic. Consideration of treatment fidelity can also help to explain nonsignificant findings and build a rationale for subsequent research. A major benefit of treatment fidelity and monitoring interventions throughout their implementation is the potential for reducing costs, time, and resources involved when having to replicate studies or obtaining non-significant findings. Implementing school counseling interventions as designed can boost confidence in results and improve school counselor accountability efforts.

Solution Strategy: Participants in this poster session will learn practical methods for developing and monitoring treatment fidelity guidelines. Participants will learn the value in using standardized treatment manuals, interventions scripts, PowerPoint presentations, electronic monitoring logs, video demonstrations, excel spreadsheets, training participants, creating timelines for implementation, and organizational methods used to distribute and collect intervention data. Hands-on materials and examples of monitoring intervention implementation will be provided and discussed. Knowledge of treatment fidelity practices can be applied to action research, outcomes research, and dissertation research studies.

How to End Suffering from Bullying and Improve Academics Problem Addressing: The presenter will use videos of real bullied victim stories which includes statistics and how it has effected student's academics and emotional needs to include suicide. In addition, the speaker will provide the audience with a K-8 researched based bully prevention curriculum program that works as it supports the academics and emotional needs of all students. He will also entertain the audience with stories that he has acquired during his 41 years in education. This will include stories as a teacher/coach, asst. principal, Jr high principal, high school principal, human resource/curriculum director, and during his tenure as superintendent.

Solution Strategy: Attendees will define "bullying" and describe three types.

Immersed: A Multicultural Experience Problem Addressing: My classmates and I are addressing multicultural issues in school counseling. Our examination of both our own city, Jacksonville, and New York City, NY we take into account the diverse cultures of each place and how they affect our work as school counselors. Our sensitivity to the cultures in our cities can only enhance our ability to work with students, families and administration.

Solution Strategy: In order to better understand the cultures of each city, we concluded that the best way to do so was to immerse ourselves in the environment. In Jacksonville, we were able to spend a few days exploring our local Indian culture, the Deaf and Blind population and we were able speak with the Ghanama Association. Alongside this, we spent a full week in NYC and spent time with each of the major cultural groups there: Asian Americans, Latino Americans, Jewish Americans, Black Americans, FSCA 2011 Convention Program Preview

and Turkish Americans. We also had the opportunity to meet with students from Brooklyn International High School; these students were from Kenya and the Dominican Republic. In an effort to better understand our own cultures and any possible biases that we may have, we wrote reflective journals on each day and the experiences that we had. To sum up these collective works, we put together videos and, through our collaboration, we were able to further our understanding of the cultures we will encounter as future school counselors.

Non-Elite Athletes: They Deserve Consideration Also Problem Addressing: Elite athletes receive much help in making college decisions. The school counselor can and should, however, provide services for non-elite athletes also. Eligibility requirements, course selection, and general encouragement are areas for counselors to help non-elite athletes who wish to continue their athletic careers in school and college.

Playing with Reality: Combing Reality Therapy with Play Counseling Problem Addressing: Reality therapy and play counseling have been recognized as effective and efficient means for working with school students. However, little effort has been made to combine the two approaches. This session will introduce three unique reality therapy based play techniques for working with elementary school students.

Solution Strategy: Attendees will learn how to implement three unique play techniques based on the concepts of reality therapy with elementary school students.

Professional School Counselors are responsible for collecting data from their school counseling programs to show that a change is being made based on specific counseling practices. Most school counselors, however, are not comfortable collecting, analyzing, and reflecting on the data when entering the field for the first time.

Solution Strategy: At the University of Central Florida, interns in the school counseling program are responsible for creating and developing an accountability project throughout their internship experience.

the data, and reflecting upon the results. Interns collaborate with university and school supervisors, school staff and stakeholders. This experience can help prepare future school counselors by giving them the confidence to use data to measure and analyze results for further program improvements.

School Counselor Identity and Advocacy in Trying Economic Times Problem Addressing: Now more than ever, School Counselors must be seen as an integral part of education rather than as an ancillary service. Elected officials and education leaders at the school, county, and state level are faced with difficult budget decisions and may not be fully aware of the benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program.

Solution Strategy: The Palm Beach School Counselor Association (PBSCA) took steps this year to advocate for schools counselors. With the theme 'Keep school counselors in our schools because kids need counselors', PBSCA implemented a series of advocacy strategies including: developing a series of position statements; publication of an association newsletter; launching a website; collaboration with local community agencies; compilation of research; collection of student outcome data (SPARC); presentations to district leadership; and a presentation to the school board.

School-age Children with Sickle Cell Disease Problem Addressing: Anxiety disorders in school-age children with Sickle Cell Disease.

Solution Strategy: I will address the success of utilizing 504Plans, Individualized Education Plans, the Hospital/Homebound venue, as well as the possibility of Dual Enrollment in order to guarantee a successful educational experience for children suffering from Sickle Cell Disease.

Students Doing Their Part to End Bullying Problem Addressing: Bullying is a major source of stress on all students, emotionally, physically, mentally, and academically. If we can make any students see the effects of the negative behavior, we can put an end to bullying one student at a time and work on positive, helpful behaviors instead.

Solution Strategy: We will be using public service announcements in one elementary and one middle school. We will first do a pre-test in one classroom to see what the students know. After the public service announcements, we will perform a post-test to see how their views have changed.

Tools for Creating Assertive Ambassadors Problem Addressing: When students do not have the developmental assets they need to succeed, they are at risk for drugs, alcohol, poor decision making and problem behaviors. My idea has transformed at risk youth into assertive leaders! It also offers adult support and connections to the school and community.

Solution Strategy: I created a program that instills thriving behaviors in youngsters, connects them to community supports, and infuses positive leadership and confidence skills. These 'tools' have transformed 'at risk' students in to Assertive Leaders who are making a difference in their community. In this session we will share identification, data collection, and assessment/evaluation tools. Viewers will also receive hands-on tools & a tool box that will ignite sparks in their students and assist in their transformation. Our results have proven to significantly increase developmental assets in our participants, our school, and in the community!
