13 international artists and designers (such as Antonio Marras and Marcel Wanders just to mention a couple) reinvented a personal vision of the Leonardo da Vinci’s bronze horse kept at the San Siro Ippodromo. The unveiling of the 13 artworks was celebrated with an event for 4.000 people, including a video mapping show over the original statue and a DJ set till late at night.

PLEASURE & TREASURE Austrian Design - Sala Reale Stazione Centrale

The exquisite Sala Reale in Milan’s central station once served as a private waiting room for the royal family. Most recently it housed furniture and interior products from 40 Austrian designers under Pleasure & Treasure. A range of marble and pastel furnishings with rounded edges and curved forms – all against candyfloss pink cloud backdrop and cushioned by a sea of Styrofoam.

Noroo ––– Ventura design district

Noroo, the Korean company anticipating colour trends in design, art and culture, presents Tides, an interactive exhibition in cooperation with artists Kwangho Lee and Wang & Söderström. The installation is not about a defined colour, rather a fluid one, changing according to the rhythms of nature, such as the movements of Sun, Moon and Earth which produce the tides.

Nilufar Depot ––– Lancetti

FAR, hosted inside the spaces of Nilufar Depot, Milan, is an experimental project dedicated to emergent designers. The format, initiated in 2018, aims to subvert the traditional order of gallery’s programmes, presenting itself as a temporary “collective of collectives” since it features pieces by designers who often work in collectives. The initiative inaugurated on the occasion of Milan Design Week and miart 2019, with the set design provided by Joseph Grima/Space Caviar.

DESIGN PRIDE Seletti and partners - Piazza Affari

The Design Pride Parade, now at its 4th edition, celebrated the Milan Design Week with the Seletti unique pop attitude. The parade stopped in Piazza Affari for the closing party, supported by Tempo, with DJ set and a video mapping projection on Palazzo Mezzanotte and the iconic Maurizio Cattelan sculpture.

Toilet Paper & Yoox ––– Triennale Museum

The code word for the party was “Confusion”, this is why the guests received invitations with 7 different dress codes and why the dinner was in Oktoberfest style and also why the cocktails were served by roller boys. The guests had the chance to dive into the paradox typical of Toilet Paper creativity to celebrate the Design Week.

RO Plastic Prize ––– Museo della Scienza e della Tecnica

“Ro Plastic Prize wishes to unite the design community in the challenge to move beyond plastic pollution as we know it, and to promote the next generation of design,” reads the competition brief by Rossana Orlandi. Furniture made of recycled plastic and fabrics made from plastic bags are among winners of the Ro Plastic Prize competition.

CIRCULAR GARDEN Carlo Ratti X Eni ––– Orto Botanico

Italian architect Carlo Ratti has grown a series of arched architectural structures from mushroom mycelium, which will be returned to the soil after Milan design week is over, in a fully circular fashion. The Circular Garden installation comprises a chain of 60 four-metre-tall arches, matching a form used often in the work of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.

CONIFERA Mamou-Mani X COS ––– Palazzo Isimbardi

French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani has assembled a structure from 700 bioplastic bricks in the courtyard of a 16th-century palazzo, as this year’s Milan design week installation for fashion brand COS: the architect wanted to show how design can be more circular, by harnessing the potential of renewable materials and sustainable processes.

A SPACE FOR BEING

The best designers are intuitive about what their audience will like so the research is more of a validation practice. “A Space for Being,” brilliantly flips that model to offer visitors a quantitative look at how design makes them feel, and measures it with a soft wristband that picks up skin temperature, sweat, heart rate, breath rate and physical movement.

Todd Bracher X Human Scale ––– Ventura Centrale

New York-based designer Todd Bracher has created an interactive light sculpture for the manufacturer of ergonomic workplace products. Titled Bodies in Motion, the installation aims to capture the feeling of human movement.

Once a simple means of transport to get from one place to another, the concept of a vehicle is rapidly changing by intertwining the boundaries between our lives and automobiles. At Milan Design Week, under the banner ‘STYLE SET FREE,’ Hyundai will highlight its innovative vision for how vehicles will become individual living spaces.

Bulgari has invited Tomás Saraceno to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the B.zero1 ring with ‘Weaving the Cosmos’, an installation that creates a dialogue between spiders weaving their nets and the Ulrico Hoepli Planetarium in Milan. Next to it, at the Indro Montanelli park, a Bulgari project linked to the evolution of the ring over the course of twenty years.

A swarm of 15,000 butterflies takes over the Fondazione Adolfo Pini in Milan, populating its new and already existing spaces, starting from the staircase at the very entrance. The black paper creatures are part of Mexico-based artist Carlos Amorales’ exhibitιon, The Accursed Hour, which also includes silhouettes and other works by the artist, in a continuous shift between images and signs.

Ibrahim Mahama, chosen by Massimiliano Gioni for Fondazione Trussardi, covered the toll booths of Porta Venezia in Milan with hundreds of bags of jute. A public work of art that speaks of migration, globalization, movement of goods and people across national borders.

Dior Maison unveiled 14 exclusive creations designed by Dimore Studio, founded in Milan in 2003 by the Italian-American duo Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran. Available exclusively by special order – for a one-year period – the collection was presented in preview at the beautiful Casa degli Atellani in Milan.

Louis Vuitton adds pieces by Atelier Biagetti and Zanellato /Bortotto to its Objets Nomades collection. Joining a line-up of renowned designers including India Mahdavi, Patricia Urquiola and Tokujin Yoshioka. The collection was unveiled at the neoclassical Palazzo Serbelloni, in an exhibition that featured the entire collection as well as past editions re-proposed in new colors and materials.

Cristina Celestino, with the sponsorship of MSGM, restyled the atmospheres of the historic bakery in Corso Genova, Cucchi, with stylish interiors swaying to the rhythm of a Caffè Concerto. The restyling takes not only to the interiors, but also the display cases, the outdoor patio, extending even to staff uniforms, packaging, the appearance of select sweets, and a jaw-dropping mise en place.

The founder and editor in chief of Cabana Magazine, Martina Mondadori, celebrated Salone de Mobile at Ralph Lauren’s historic Palazzo. The Circolo privato that hosted the dinner had been transformed for the evening with Ralph Lauren Home Dillon ticking stripe fabric draped from the ceiling to the walls and paper lanterns hung with the Duchess crystal chandelier.

“Designed to Satisfy” doesn’t apply only to Juul, but also to the exclusive party hosted in the unique frame of the San Paolo Converso Church to celebrate the Milan Design Week.

The Juul pop up shop offered a highly attractive design alternative to adult smokers: the shop, located into the courtyard of Base in hte very heart of the Tortona Design district, was active for sampling, sales and customization.
