STUDENT LIFE at FA

An Independent School for Day & Boarding Students, Grades 9-12, PG

It’s all about the location...

Fryeburg is a classic New England village, nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains and home to Fryeburg Academy. Fryeburg offers a close-knit community with endless outdoor activities in every season. With over 800,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest, lakes, rivers, and four major ski resorts nearby—the opportunities to explore the region’s magnificent natural surroundings are boundless. Fryeburg is also rich in culture and entertainment, thanks to thriving local resort towns like North Conway and the proximity of larger cities like Portland and Boston that are within an hour and 2.5-hour drive respectively.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Experience community, a sense of belonging, and a home-away from home

FA students quickly build relationships with peers and faculty. Spanning a variety of different cultures, ages, and backgrounds, students share a common purpose and sense of community at Fryeburg Academy — extending to the village of Fryeburg and nearby towns.

Afternoon Activities: Afternoon activities begin at 3:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Weekday activities or sports are required for residential students. From cooking lessons and tennis to skiing and outdoor ping-pong, there are options that fit every student interest.

Weekend Activities: It’s Friday! Whether a shopping excursion to the outlets in nearby North Conway sounds like a perfect outing or a hike up Mount Washington is more your style, FA offers a variety of excursions, in addition to on-campus events. Mount Washington Valley offers outdoor enthusiasts easy access to rivers and lakes as well as hiking, biking, and rock climbing adventures—plus ample opportunities for skiing and snow sports (just 15 minutes from campus!) FA’s 105-acre campus includes beautiful trails and a ropes challenge course.

ATHLETICS

Let’s go Raiders!

Participation in athletics plays a vital role in our students’ lives. FA’s strong, committed coaching staff is dedicated to helping athletes develop physically, mentally, and emotionally. Try out for a spot on one of our competitive varsity teams, practice your skills on a JV team, or join one of the many athletic clubs. The Ada Cram Wadsworth Arena built in 2007, offers a 31,000 square-foot gymnasium, complete with three, full-sized basketball courts, an indoor track, a wrestling facility, and a sports training room.

Highlights:

• 19 Varsity Athletic Offerings — Fryeburg Academy offers a variety of sports spanning all three seasons for all interests and ability levels.

• Daniel E. Turner Fitness Center — located on campus and outfitted with Nautilus strength-training equipment, free weights, and a variety of cardio machines that include rowers, treadmills, and elliptical trainers.

• FA’s Developmental Model — while Fryeburg Academy commits to developing athletes and teams that can compete at the state level, we believe in a developmental approach to athletics. In this model, competition and winning are valued, but the lead priorities are an athlete’s healthy physical and mental development, along with positive team experiences.

• Certified Athletic Trainers — through a partnership with Mountain Center Physical Therapy and Sports Rehab, our athletes have daily access to highly-qualified athletic trainers.

CLUBS+ ACTIVITIES

Tackle real-world issues, gain leadership skills, and build community

Clubs at FA offer students an important break from their studies along with the chance to have fun and build community with their peers. Students can connect with new and old friends, give back to their community, explore their interests, and develop leadership skills. There are nearly 40 clubs to choose among, and every year clubs are refreshed with new ventures that originate from student or faculty interest.

Highlights:

• Model United Nations — challenges students to think critically about global issues of our time. Students travel to Boston University and Dartmouth College to participate in simulating U.N. operations with high school students from across New England.

• Interact Club — each year, members complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, students develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of developing leadership skills and personal integrity.

• International Club — plans and produces events to the campus community about countries represented at Fryeburg Academy. The Dragon Dance and International Talent Show are among the club’s annual activities.

• Math Team — open to all students in Algebra II or higher who enjoy competing academically. The team competes against other schools in Maine and across New England.

OUTDOOR LEARNING & RESEARCH CENTER at FA

An Independent School for Day & Boarding Students, Grades 9-12, PG

Outdoor Learning & Research Center (OLRC)

The Outdoor Learning Research Center (OLRC) adds a broad variety of adventurebased, experiential learning programs to our already academically challenging curriculum. The OLRC program makes use of nearby natural resources of the White Mountain National Forest, including an on-campus outdoor classroom, school garden, and ropes challenge course— spread across 63 acres of fields and forests that adjoin the Saco River floodplain. The OLRC program is designed to promote inquiry, exploration, environmental stewardship, and leadership. Students may choose from two distinct certificate programs: Outdoor Research & Design or Adventure Education to complete their OLRC certification.

ADVENTURE. AGRICULTURE. RESEARCH.

Experiential learning at Fryeburg Academy

All Fryeburg Academy students are introduced to the Outdoor Learning & Research Center (OLRC) during their ninth-grade advisory through participation in our ropes challenge course. The challenge course is designed to cultivate students’ social-emotional and leadership skills, along with overnight camping, canoeing, rock climbing, and hiking adventures. Ninth-grade students are also introduced to the principles of field research through a collaborative partnership between the FA science department, OLRC, and Tin Mountain Conservation Center. Students interested in field science or science fair projects are encouraged to enroll in the Honors Research Design courses and are supported in developing their own projects. The school garden is integrated with the science department and extracurricular programs to give students the experience of planning, growing, and preparing a garden and exposure to other Maine agricultural disciplines such as maple sugaring and forestry.

OLRC CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Two distinct capstone experiences

The culmination of a student’s OLRC experience will end with a capstone certification in one of the following two tracts:

This certificate is for students seeking experiences that extend beyond our campus into the mountains and rivers around Fryeburg. Outdoor adventures provide a context in which aspiring recipients of this certificate engage in discussions about local environmental issues and “leave no trace” ethics, study risk management and wilderness first aid, and develop leadership skills.

This certificate is for highly-motivated students that want to develop their academic skills by exploring complex problems and conducting field-based research. The core of this program is an honors-level Research Design class and the sequential Independent Study Research Project.
