The Departure of the Great St. John Colobos (the نياحة القديس يوحنا القصير الشهير بابي Short) يحنس 31st October - 20th Baba بابة٢٠ - أكتوبر٣١ On this day, the great light and saint, the hegumen في مثل هذا اليوم تنيح القديس الضياء Abba John (Yoannis) Colobos (the Short), departed. ،العظيم اإليغومانس األنبا يوأنس القصير He was a native of Betsa in upper Egypt and he had وكان.كان من أهل بتسا بصعيد مصر one brother. His parents were righteous and God-fear- ،وأخ له من أبوين صالحين خائفين من هللا ing people, rich in faith and good deeds. .غنيين في اإليمان واألعمال الصالحة When he was 8 years old, his heart turned away from ولما بلغ يوأنس الثامنة من عمره تحول the futility of this world, its lusts and its glory, and he قلبه عن أباطيل العالم وشهواته وأمجاده desired the monastic life. The grace of God moved him فحركته نعمة هللا أن،واشتاق للرهبنة to go to the desert of Scete and there he came upon a وهناك اهتدى،يمضى إلى برية شيهيت tried and holy man whose name was Abba Pemwah يقال له أنبا بمويه، إلى شيخ قديس مجرب from El-Bahnasa. John asked Abba Pemwah to allow من البهنسا وسأله أن يسمح له باإلقامة him to stay with him. The old man answered, trying إنك، عنده فقال له الشيخ مختبرا «يا إبنى him, “My son, you cannot stay with us for this is a ال تقدر على اإلقامة معنا ألن هذه برية very hard desert and those who dwell in it eat from والساكنون فيها يقتاتون من عمل،متعبة the work of their hands, besides observing many fasts, أيديهم فضال عن الصوم الكثير والصالة prayers, and sleeping on the floor and many other فارجع إلى،والنوم على األرض والتقشف forms of asceticism. Go back to the world and live in فقال له األنبا،»العالم وعش في التقوى the fear of God.” Abba John told him, “Do not send يوأنس «ال تردني يا أبى من أجل هللا ألني me away, for God’s sake, because I came to be in your ،أتيت ألكون تحت طاعتك وفى صالتك obedience and prayers. If you accept me, I believe that فإذا قبلتني فإني أؤمن أن الرب يطيب قلبك God will make your heart well-pleased with me.” .»على Abba Pemwah was in the habit of not doing anything ولما كان من عادة األب بمويه أنه ال يعمل hastily. He asked the Lord Christ to reveal to him فقد سأل السيد المسيح أن يكشف،بعجلة the matter of this young man. The angel of the Lord فظهر له مالك الرب،له أمر هذا الشاب appeared to him and said, “Accept him, for he shall ، اقبله فإنه سيكون إناء مختارا:قائال become a chosen vessel.” Abba Pemwah brought him ،فأدخله األب بمويه وقص شعر رأسه and he shaved the hair of his head. He laid out the garb وأخذ ثياب الرهبنة ولبث يصلى عليها of the monk, and he prayed over it for three days and وعندما ألبسه إياها،ثالثة أيام وثالث ليالي three nights and when he put the garb on him, he saw ،رأى مالكا يصلب عليها an angel making the sign of the Cross over it. Saint وابتدأ القديس يوأنس بنسك عظيم وأعمال John started his monastic life with great asceticism and وفى أحد األيام أراد األب بمويه،فاضلة splendid works. One day Abba Pemwah wanted to test ال أقدر:أن يمتحنه فطرده من عنده قائال him, so he expelled him from his cell saying, “I cannot فأقام سبعة أيام خارج باب،أن أسكن معك live with you.” Abba John stayed out by the door of وفى كل يوم كان يخرج األب،القالية his cell for seven days. Every day Abba Pemwah went فيسجد له،بمويه ويقرعه بجريدة نخل out and smote him with a palm branch and Abba John وفى اليوم السابع خرج، »قائال «أخطأت bowed down before him saying, “I have sinned.” On فرأى سبعة مالئكة،الشيخ قاصدا الكنيسة the seventh day, the old man went out to go to the معهم سبعة أكاليل يضعونها على رأس church and he saw seven angels with seven crowns ومن ذلك اليوم صار عنده مكرما،يوأنس placing them on the head of Abba John. Since that day, .مبجال he was held by him in honor and reverence. وحدث يوما أن األنبا بمويه وجد عودا One day Abba Pemwah found a piece of dry wood and خذ هذا:يلبسا فأعطاه ألنبا يوأنس وقال له gave it to Abba John and said to him, “Take this wood, فأطاعه وصار،العود واغرسه واسقه plant and water it.” St. John obeyed and went on waيسقيه كل يوم مرتين وكان الماء يبعد عن tering it twice a day even though the water was about وبعد ثالث،سكنهما مقدار إثنى عشر ميال 12 miles from where they lived. After three years, that فأخذ،سنين نما العود وصار شجرة مثمرة piece of wood sprouted and grew into a fruitful tree. الشيخ من الثمرة وطاف بها على الشيوخ Abba Pemwah took some of that fruit and went around ، »قائال «خذوا وكلوا من ثمرة الطاعة to all the elder monks saying, “Take, eat from the fruit وال تزال هذه الشجرة باقية في المكان of obedience.” This tree still exists in its place in his ،الذي فيه ديره monastery. ،ومرض األب بمويه اثنتي عشرة سنة Abba Pemwah fell sick for 12 years and Abba John ،وكان األب يوأنس يخدمه طول هذه المدة ministered unto him all this time during which he ولم يسمع من معلمه في أثنائها قط أنه

Abba Pemwah was an experienced old man وأضناه المرض حتى صار كالعود who had been tried much, and sickness had emaciated وعند،اليابس ليكون قربانا مختارا him until he became like a piece of dry wood, so that he نياحته جمع الشيوخ وأمسك بيد األنبا would be a chosen offering. يوأنس وسلمه لهم قائال «احتفظوا بهذا When Abba Pemwah was about to die, he gathered وأوصاه، »ألنه مالك وليس إنسان together the elder monks and he held the hand of Abba أن يقيم في المكان الذي غرس فيه John and gave him to them saying, “Take him and keep وبعد هذا أتى أخوه الكبير،الشجرة him, for he is an angel, not a man.” He commanded وترهب عنده وصار هو أيضا راهبا Abba John to stay in the place where he had planted the .فاضال tree. After that Abba John’s older brother came to the ولما صيروا األنبا يوأنس قمصا على monastery and was ordained a monk with him. After much forebearing, Abba عند البطريرك فحملته سحابة إلى بابل John accepted to go on this mission. When he left the فدخل المدينة وشاهد آثارها وأنهارها Patriarch, a cloud carried him away to Babylon. He ،وقصورها ووجد أجساد القديسين entered the city and saw its monuments, rivers, and خرج،ولما شرع في نقلها من مكانها palaces and found the bodies of the saints. When he :صوت من األجساد المقدسة يقول له started moving them from their place, a voice came out أنهم ال يفارقون هذا،إن هذه إرادة هللا from the holy bodies and said to him, “This is the Will ولكن ألجل،المكان إلى يوم القيامة of God that we do not leave this place until the day of محبة البطريرك ثاؤفيلس وتعبك the Resurrection. It happened وقد حدث عندما كان البطريرك والشعب بالكنيسة أن القناديل أنارت فجأة فأعطوا when the Patriarch and the people were in the church, .المجد هلل the lamps were lit up suddenly and they all glorified the وفى أحد األيام دخل أحد الرهبان قالية Lord. فوجده راقدا ومالئكة،األنبا يوأنس One day, a monk came into the cell of Abba John. He ،يروحون عليه found him lying down with angels waving their wings وبعد ذلك أغار البربر على البرية over him. وعندما سئل في ذلك أجاب بأنه،فتركها Later on, the Berbers attacked the desert of Scete and لم يتركها خوفا من الموت ولكن لئال he left it. When he was asked why he left, he replied ،يقتله بربري فيذهب إلى الجحيم بسببه that he did not leave because he was afraid of death, وغيره،وأنه ال يريد أن يكون في راحة but because he feared a Berber would slay him and go ألنه وان كان مقومه،في عذاب بسببه to hell, for though he is against his worship, he is his brother in form. Then he went to the mountain of Abba ثم،في العبادة إال أنه أخوه في الصورة قصد جبل األنبا أنطونيوس عند القلزم Anthony on the Red Sea. There he dwelt by the side of فرزقه هللا،وسكن بجوار قرية هناك a village and God sent him a believer who served him. When the Lord wished to grant him rest and to end his ولما أراد الرب،رجال مؤمنا كان يخدمه
strife in this world, He sent him His two righteous saints ،نياحته وإنهاء غربته في هذا العالم Abba Macarius and Abba Anthony to comfort him and أرسل إليه قديسيه أبو مقار وأنطونيوس to inform him about his departure. On the eve of Sunday, فمرض،ليعزياه ويعرفاه بانتقاله he fell sick and sent his attendant to bring him something مرضا بسيطا وأرسل الخادم ليأتي له from the village. The angels and the host of saints came ،بشيء من القرية وكان ذلك ليلة األحد and received his pure soul and took it up to heaven. فحضرت المالئكة وجماعة القديسين At that time, his servant came back and saw the soul of وتسلموا نفسه الطاهرة وصعدوا بها the saint surrounded by the host of saints and angels sing وعندما عاد الخادم رأى،إلى السماء ing before them. Before them all, there was one shining نفس القديس وجماعة القديسين يحيطون like the sun and singing. The servant marvelled at this والمالئكة يرتلون أمامها وفى،بها magnificent sight. An angel came to him and told him the مقدمة الكل واحد منظره مثل الشمس name of each one of the saints. Then the servant asked ودهش الخادم لهذا المنظر،يرتل the angel, “Who is this one in front of them all, who is الرائع فأتاه مالك وعرفه عن اسم كل shining like the sun?” The angel replied, “This is Abba واحد من القديسين بقوله له هذا أنبا Anthony, the father of all the monks.” إلى آخره فقال، وهذا أبو مقار،باخوم When the servant went into the cell, he found the body of « ومن هذا المتقدم المنير:له الخادم the saint kneeling to the ground, as he had given up his كالشمس؟» فأجابه «هذا أنطونيوس soul while kneeling. The attendant wept sorrowfully over ولما وصل الخادم،»أبو جميع الرهبان him and went in a hurry to the people of the village and إلى المغارة وجد جسد القديس ساجدا told them what had happened. They came and carried his ألنه أسلم روحه في حال،إلى األرض holy body with great honor. When they brought him into وأسرع إلى، فبكى بكاء عظيما،سجوده the village, great wonders and miracles were performed فحضروا،أهل القرية وأعلمهم بما حدث through his body. ،وحملوا جسده المقدس بكرامة عظيمة His prayers be with us and Glory be to our God, forever. وفى دخوله المدينة أجرى هللا من جسده Amen. .عجائب كثيرة The Departure of St. Freig (Abba Tegi, Anba Roweiss). ولربنا المجد دائما،صالته تكون معنا 1st November – 21st Baba . آمين.أبديا On this day also in the year 145 A.D. (1121 of martyrs) نياحة القديس االنبا رويس St. Freig, who is known as Abba Roweiss, departed. This بابة٢١ – نوفمبر١ saint was from a village called Miniet-Yamin (about 130 145 في مثل هذا اليوم من سنة kilometers north of Cairo). His father’s name was Isaac للشهداء تنيح القديس1121 - ميالدية and his mother’s name was Sarah. When he was born, كان، فريج المعروف بالقديس رويس they called him Freig. He worked with his father in farmالقديس من ضيعة صغيرة باألعمال ing and he had a small camel on which he carried salt and وكان اسم. الغربية تسمى منية بمين sold it. He called the camel “Roweiss” (i.e. small head). ولما ولد سمياه. أبيه اسحق وأمه سارة The camel used to put his head against his cheek as if فريج وكان يعمل مع والده في الفالحة he was kissing him. Because of his humility, he called وكان له قعود ( جمل ) صغير يبيع himself after his camel. عليه الملح وحدثت ضائقة للمسيحيين Persecutions befell the Christians, so he came to Cairo فجاء إلى مصر وصار يتنقل من جهة and not having a house or shelter, he went from one place إلى أخرى ولم يكن له مبيت وال مأوى to another. He spent most of his nights in prayers and وكان يقضى أغلب ليله ساهرا في wailing. He did not own a coat or any clothes or a cover الصالة والنوح ولم يقتن رداء وال ثوبا for his head. He was naked except for that with which he وال عمامة بل كان عريانا إال ما يستر به covered his loins, and his head was uncovered. He looked وكان مكشوف الرأس ومنظره. جسمه like the hermits of the desert; his eyes were red because وعيناه محمرتين من، كسواح البراري of much weeping and he never cut the hair of his head. كثرة البكاء ولم يحلق شعر رأسه مطلقا He was a man of few words -once an evil man smote وذات مرة ضربه. وكان قليل الكالم him severely, but he did not open his mouth. St. Marcus أحد األشرار بقسوة زائدة فلم يفتح فاه El-Antoni was present at that time and he rebuked the ة وكان حاضرا في ذلك الوقت القديس evil man. مرقس األنطونى فانتهره وفى أخر أيام During the later part of his life, he used to say, “O Virgin, ألن، حياته كان يقول «يا عذراء خذيني take me because my burden is heavy.” He meant the bur ويعنى بذلك تقل، »الحمل ثقيل علي den of carrying the sin of the people for which he often حمل خطايا الشعب التي كثيرا ما كان rebuked them though they did not listen to him. ينهاهم عنها فال يستمعون لكالمه وكان He lived in the days of the holy father Pope Mattheos, معاصرا للقديس البابا متاؤس البطريرك 87th Patriarch, and St. Marcus El-Antoni, in the days of السابع والثمانين والقديس مرقصي
El-Sultan El-Zaher Barkuk. األنطونى في زمان السلطان الملبه He shut himself up in a small storeroom at the place of .الظاهر برقوق his disciple Michael the builder, in Meniet Syreg. He ومن غريب أمره أنه حبس ذاته داخل stayed in that place for 9 years until his departure on the محزن صغير عند أحد تالميذه المدعو twenty-first of Babah of the year 1121 of the martyrs. ميخائيل البناء بمنية السيرج وأقام تسع He was buried in the church of the Virgin, in Deir El21 سنين في ذلك المكان حتى تنيح في Khandaq. Amen. . دائما ابديا امين The Martyrdom of Saint Luke the Evangelist استشهاد القديس لوقا االنجيلي 2nd November - 22nd Baba بابة٢٢ - نوفمبر٢ On this day, St. Luke the Evangelist and physician, was في مثل هذا اليوم استشهد القديس لوقا martyred. He was one of the 70 disciples mentioned وهو من السبعين. اإلنجيلي الطبيب in the tenth chapter of his gospel. He accompanied the رسوال الذين ورد ذكرهم في اإلصحاح Apostles Peter and Paul and wrote their account. وكان يصحب. العاشر من إنجيله After the martyrdom of these two Apostles, he went وبعد. بطرس وبولس ويكتب أخبارهما through Rome preaching. Those who worshipped idols نياحة هذين الرسولين مكث هذا القديس and the Jews in Rome agreed among themselves and فاتفق عابدو. يبشر في نواحي رومية went to Nero the Emperor accusing St. Luke of attractاألوثان واليهود فيما بينهم وتوجهوا ing many men to his teaching with his sorcery. Nero إلى نيرون الملك ووشوا له بأنه قد رد commanded that St. Luke be brought before him. When بسحره جماعة كثيرة إلى تعليمه فأمر St. Luke knew that, he gave all the books he had to a ولما علم القديس لوقا بذلك. بإحضاره fisherman and told him, “Take these and keep them أعطي ما كان عنده من الكتب لرجل for they will be useful to you and will show you God’s صياد وقال له «احتفظ بهذه عندك فإنها way.” ولما مثل. »تنفعك وتريك طريق هللا When St. Luke came before Nero the Emperor, the أمام نيرون الملك قال له الملك «إلى Emperor asked him, “How long will you lead the people فأجابه القديس، »متي تضل الناس ؟ astray?” St. Luke replied, “I am not a magician, but I ولكني رسول، «انا لست ساحرا am an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the فأمر إن. »يسوع المسيح ابن هللا الحي Living God.” The Emperor commanded his men to cut يقطع ساعده األيمن قائال «اقطعوا هذه off his right hand saying, “Cut off this hand which wrote اليد التي كانت تعلم» فقال له القديس the books.” The saint replied to him, “We do not fear «نحن ال نكره الموت واالنطالق من death, nor the departure from this world, and to realize العالم ولكي تعرف قوة سيدي» تناول the power of my Master.” He took up his severed hand يده المقطوعة والصقها في مكانها and made it reattach to its proper place, then he separat. ثم فصلها فانفصلت، فالتصقت ed it. Those who were present marvelled and the head of عند ذلك آمن. فتعجب الحاضرون the Emperor’s cabinet and his wife believed as well as وجمع كثير قيل إن، الوزير وزوجته many others and it was said that they numbered 276. The فكتب، عدتهم مائتان وست وسبعين Emperor wrote their decree and ordered that their heads الملك قضيتهم وأمر بان تؤخذ رؤوسهم be cut off together with that of the Apostle St. Luke; thus وهكذا تمت شهادتهم. مع الرسول لوقا their martyrdom was completed. وجعل جسد القديس في كيس شعر. They placed the body of the saint in a hair sack and cast وبتدبير هللا قذفته. والقي في البحر it in the sea. By God’s will, the waves of the sea brought فوجد رجل مؤمن، األمواج إلى جزيرة it to an island. A believer found it, took it and buried it وقد كتب هذا. فأخذه وكفنه ودفنه، with great honor. This saint wrote the Gospel bearing القديس إنجيله المنسوب إليه وكذلك his name and the “Acts of the Apostles” addressing his سفر أعمال الرسل موجها القول لتلميذه words to his disciple Theophilus who was a gentile. ولربنا. ثاؤفيلس الذي كان من األمم His blessings be upon us and Glory be to our God, for. المجد دائما ابديا امين ever

But, more dangerously is the division in our own ضعفها وتفتتنها وظهور ممالك أخرى أقوى domain … in our homes .. كما يحدث على مر التاريخ.. منها مكانها A division occurred in the house of Ahab … ومملكة إسرائيل هى أحدى هذه الممالك التي Ahab was a king of Israel … and as such he had انقسمت فى أيام رحبعام ملك إسرائيل وإبن to live according the commandments of God ولم تعمر المملكة طويال بعد.. سليمان الملك in honesty and purity but his evil wife Jeze.. هذا وسقط شعب إسرائيل ويهوذا فى السبي bel wanted to live in her sinful ways … Ahab .. ولكن ما أخطر االنقسام فى ممالكنا الخاصة worshiped God … and Jezebel worshiped Baal فى بيوتنا (1kings 19-21) … and under the influence of فآخاب هو ملك.. حدث أنقسام فى بيت آخاب this evil woman, Baal entered the house hold الفروض عليه أن يعيش حسب.. إسرائيل of Ahab and evil entered their lives … and the وصايا هللا فى أمانة وبر ولكن زوجته الشريرة whole house was destroyed … and Ahab off آخاب يعبد.. أيزابل تريد أن تغبش فى شرها spring was lost for ever (Read 1 Kings 21) وتحت تأثير هذه.. وأيزابل تعبد البعل.. هللا There was a division in Nabal’s house hold … ودخل.. المرأة الشريرة دخل البعل يبت آخاب his wife Abigail was a wise and careful woman وضاع.. وخرب البيت كله.. الشر حياتهما ... while on the other hand he was a drunkard .. )2١ )2١ نسل آخاب بأكمله (أقرأ ملوك األول and careless person … he dismissed David’s messengers without any appreciation of David’s فزوجته أبيجايل.. حدث أنقسام فى بيت نابال favours to him … and David almost destroyed وهو أنسان متسرع.. أمرأة حكيمة مدبرة Nabal’s house if it was not for Abigail’s wisdom طرد رسل داود بدون.. سكير قليل التدبير who quickly went and calmed David with her وكاد داود.. تفكير وبدون تقدير لخدمة داود له wise words (and action) (1 Samuel 25) … and أن يهلك بيت نابال لوال حكمة أبيجايل التي indeed this house hold did not last … and the أسرعت واسترضت داود بكالمها المملوء Lord struck Nabal to death وفعال لم يثبت.. )2٥ )2٥ حكمة (صموئيل االول The prodigal son … who was almost destroyed .. وضرب الرب نابال فمات.. هذا البيت by his division from his father’s house … and كاد أن يهلك ويضيع بانقسامه.. واالبن الضال if it wasn’t for his repentance and return to his ولوال توبته ورجوعه الى أبيه.. عن بيت أبيه father, he would have been desolate and gone … .. لضاع هذا اإلنسان وهلك Indeed, how difficult are these divisions and أصعب وما االنقسامات حقا ما أصعب هذه how serious are its destructive effects … many فكم من بيوتخربت.. آثارها المدمرة homes were destroyed and many sons and وكم من أوالد وبنات تشردوا بسبب هذه daughters were displaced because these divi.. االنقسامات sions … .. الذي ال يهمه سوى نفسه.. فاألب األناني The selfish father … who only cares for himself سوى لذاته وشهواته فقط سوى سيجارته وكأسه … and his pleasures and desires, and his cigarettes and (alcoholic) drinks and his evenings of وسهراته ويضرب بعرض الحائط كل نصائح يسبب هذا.. زوجته وال يهمه صراخ أوالده pleasures disregarding all the pleas and advice اإلنسان شقوقا وصدعا فى حياة أسرته قد تؤدى from his wife nor he cares for the pleas of the children … such a person causes a division and وضياع هؤالء األطفال.. الى أنهيار البيت كله a fracture in his family life which can lead the .. المساكين destruction of the whole household … and the .. التي ال يهمها سوى ذاتها.. واألم األنانية desolation of the poor children … ولو على.. كرامتها.. مظهرها.. مالبسها The selfish mother … who only cares for herself ال تريد أن تحتمل.. حساب كرامة زوجها … and her fashion … and appearance .. and شىء من أجل أوالدها وال تريد أن تضحى pride … even, if it is on account of her husband فى حالة شجار.. بشىء من أجل مستقبلهم honour … and cannot bear anything for the sake تخلق أنقساما وجوا.. مستمر مشاكل مستمرة of her children and does not want to sacrifice ماذا.. عدائيا فى األسرة وروح عدم التفاهم anything for their future … always in a state of .. تنتظر عندئذ ألطفالها ومستقبلهم anger and continuous quarrel … creating diviلقد صرنا نتعلل ونتحجج بأن هناك فجوة يين sions and a confrontationist attitude within the أننا من جيل غير جيلهم.. جيلنا وجيل أطفالنا family and lack of harmony … what then does وصرنا نستخدم هذه الحجة لنبرر أنقسامات.. she expect for her children and their future … صرنا نبرر ألوالدنا أن.. كثيرة فى حياتنا We often use the excuse that there is a gulf be صرنا.. يذهبوا الى الديسكو والنوادى الليلية
صرنا نبرر.. نبرر لهم شرب الخمور والتدخين tween our generation and our children’s generation … and we often use this excuse to justify وفى نفس.. لهم حياة الفساد والزنا والخطية the divisions in our lives … we make excused أيام الطهارة.. الوقت نترحم على أيام زمان for our children to frequent night clubs and dis- ماذا حدث ؟؟؟ لماذا ننقسم.. والنقاوة واالستقامة cos … we even find the excuse for them to drink على ذواتنا ؟؟ alcohol and smoke … but we find an excuse for ان وصايا الرب يسوع عن حياة.. أيها األحباء a life of sin and adultery … and the same time, الطهارة والنقاوة والهدوء والوداعة والطاعة we lament days of old … the days of purity and أن.. ليست خاصة بجيل دون آخر.. والتواضع straight living … what has happened???
