Head Coach Bryan Christiansen B r yan
CHRISTIANSEN HEAD COACH HIRAM Bryan Christiansen is in his second season as the head swimming coach for Frostburg after being hired from a national search in September of 2018. In his first year, Christiansen guided three athletes to earning All-CAC Second Team honors. Senior Maddie Weinberger, junior Elizabeth DeMonte, and sophomore Luke Holloway all broke program records leading up to their CAC honors. He also led the team to breaking 27 team records in his first season, including several swimmers who broke the same record more than once. The men’s program finished CAC’s with a record fourth place with the team’s highest ever point total (352) while the women’s team finished ahead of Salisbury for the first time since joining the conference. Christiansen was named the assistant coach of John Carroll University’s swim teams in 2017, where he was part of the coaching staff that was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Staff of the Year for the 2018 season, while leading both the men’s and women’s to the 2018 OAC Championship. During his tenure with John Carroll, Christiansen coached 19 conference champions, and both Men’s and Women’s Divers of the Year. JCU also set seven OAC records, 13 varsity records and had two NCAA All-Americans. Prior to his tenure with JCU, Christiansen served as an assistant coach at SUNY New Paltz from 2015-2017. He was part of a coaching staff that led their teams to second place finishes in the 2016 and 2017 SUNY Athletic Conference, coached eight conference champions while setting three SUNYAC records, 14 varsity records and 13 pool records. The SUNY New Paltz swimming teams both went undefeated in the 2016-2017 season. Christiansen has coached swimming since 2008 at the club and high school levels and still active with summer swim camps, also directing the New Paltz Elite Camp from 2016-17. Christiansen graduated from Hiram College, earning his bachelor’s degree in history in 2008 with a 3.82 GPA. He was a three-year captain of the men’s swim team and was named the MVP in the 2006-2007 season. He was part of the 800-meter freestyle relay team that finished with a time of 7:06.60 in 2008, still a Hiram College record to this day. He earned his master’s degree in communication and media technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Assistant Coaches A ndrew
FOLTZ ASSISTANT COACH FROSTBURG STATE Andrew Foltz is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the Frostburg State swim teams. He will work with both men’s and women’s swim teams. Prior to joining the FSU coaching staff, Foltz worked as an assistant swim coach at the Elizabethtown Aquatic Club in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. While at Elizabethtown, he provided swimming instructions for multiple age groups and implemented dryland programs for participating swimmers. For the past six summers, Foltz has been the head swim coach at the Mount Joy Lions Summer Swim Team in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania. As head coach, he led all aspects of daily team activities and instructed 75-100+ swimmers. Foltz received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. While graduating with honors Foltz was a letterman on the Football team. He also received a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

2019-20 Season Preview After a successful campaign last year under new head coach Bryan Christiansen, the Frostburg State swimming teams will look to take the next step heading into their first year of Division II competition. Now in his second year, Christiansen believes that he and his squad are more prepared for the challenges that await in Division II as compared to last season. “Last year, we were thrown into stuff so quickly,” Christiansen said. “It’s nice to be in Division II because we have had a little more time to get on the same page. We have been able to spread things out and do it the right way.” The Bobcats had many new faces last season after finishing in fourth place out of five teams during the CAC Championship. This year, 19 combined swimmers return, including junior Luke Holloway, who earned All-CAC second team honors a year ago. Holloway continued his uber-successful 2017-18 season by breaking his own school record in the 100-yard freestyle at the CAC Championship, and narrowly missed another school record in the 50-yard freestyle by 0.07 seconds. He won the CAC Championship in the 100-yard freestyle his freshman season and qualified for ECAC Championships in the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle events last year.

Classmate Anthony Giuseppetti was also impressive last year, setting a pair of program records in the backstroke and reached the finals in the 200-yard backstroke at the ECAC Championships. He already has several program records in the medley relay and backstroke events. Many juniors are expected to lead the way for the Frostburg men’s swimming team. Cayden Abramowitz, Sawyer Conklin, Connor Gioffreda, and Brady Peterson are all juniors that had many top three finishes a year ago in their respective events. Christiansen is also excited about what the underclassmen can bring to the table. Luke Russell had a strong preseason outing, Adam Stein is looking to build off his first year where he won 10 individual events. The 2019-20 men’s swimming team only has two seniors on the roster. Hunter McFalls had nine top-three finishes and one individual win last year, and Matt Whelan notched seven topfive individual finishes. The women’s team will have to live life without one of their most decorated swimmers ever in Maddie Weinberger. She finished her career claiming all six breaststroke records and seven relay records. She was named All-CAC Second Team in her final year, her fifth career All-CAC award. In addition, Elizabeth DeMonte was the only other Bobcat to claim an All-CAC Second Team honoree on the women’s side, setting another program record in the 200-yard IM during the CAC Championship.

With two of the best swimmers on the team last year gone, the women’s team will have to rely on returning underclasswomen to lead the team to success.

2019-20 Season Preview The leading senior will be Becca Marsh, who won several events throughout the season in many freestyle events. She took fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the CAC Championships, and set six school records in her freshman and sophomore seasons in the 200-yard medley relay along with the 400-yard and 200, 400, and 800-meter freestyle relays. In her freshman season, Marsh finished with gold or silver in 13 different events. Last season, she won eight individual events and two relay contests. Christiansen stated that she will be leaned upon a lot for the distance races. Classmate Elizabeth Myers will also be leaned upon to contribute for the Bobcats. She had eight top-three finishes with one individual and one relay victory last year. She broke four school records in her freshman season. In addition, sophomores Aubree Morris and Gabrielle Thompson burst onto the scene in their first year as a Bobcat. Morris won the 100meter butterfly events in her first two matches, while Thompson showed lots of improvement in the 200-meter butterfly as the season went on.

“[Morris] has stepped up in the spot left by DeMonte,” Christiansen said. “She’s a real talent and will do some really great things for us. “[Thompson] is a jack-of-all-trades type of swimmer,” Christiansen said. “We’re going to try to get her to swim in every possible event.” The first-year swimmers from both the men’s and women’s teams have surprised Christiansen. “[The first-years] were really undervalued coming out of high school, even by me,” Christiansen said. “Once they got to practice, they have been outstanding and have been pushing our seniors.” Rayne Cicen has been described as one of, if not the, best kicker on the team. Maya Wilson has done really well in distance practices. Sydney Coval, a sophomore transfer, and Ana Hughes are also expected to contribute in a myriad of ways. On the men’s side, Quincy Page was a sought-after recruit, James Harmon was impressive in the breaststroke, Jacob Tantalla is a sophomore transfer provides depth in the breaststroke, and Myles Henderson is giving Adam Stein a run for his money in distance. Christiansen expects Henderson to provide a 1-2 punch with Stein.

About Frostburg From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
