SC disqualifies PML-N minister for holding 2 CNICs ISLAMABADL: The Supreme Court on

Wednesday disqualified Punjab Prisons Minister Chaudhry Abdul Waheed Arain for holding two computerised national identity cards (CNICs). The court termed it a sheer violation of Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution. A three-member bench, led by Justice Saqib Nisar, and comprising Justice Azmat Saeed and Justice Musheer Alam, resumed hearing of the petition filed by Abdul Waheed Arain against Election Tribunal's decision over his disqualification for holding two CNICs. The bench dismissed the provincial minister's appeal and maintained the tribunal's order. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Rana Abdul Jabbar had moved the petition in June 2013 before the ET, alleging that Arain had concealed the facts before the returning officer. The petition had stated that Arain was using two CNICs – one for official documents and parliamentary affairs and the other for paperwork regarding his property, bank accounts and business deals. The ET had disqualified Arain on February 5. In 2013 general elections, PML-N candidate Arain had got 33,030 votes and his competitor PTI leader Rana Abdul Jabbar got 28,826 votes from PP-192 Multan. –APP

He lauded Finance Minister Ishaq Dar for his key role in reviving the economy. He said the PML-N government was strictly adhering to its manifesto and fulfilling all promises made to the masses. The PM said the overall economic situation in the country has revived with painstaking work. He mentioned the hard work being put in for resolving the issue of energy shortage in the country and said a broadbased programme was being pursued, including power generation from coal, solar and wind, besides long-term projects on hydro generation. He lauded Dar for his role in reviving the economy, which today was stable and improving. The PM said the government was today pursuing a 20-point agenda that was being implemented across the country and vowed that the operation would continue till the elimination of last terrorist. Lakhvi’s detention

IHC summons interior secretary and Okara DCO UMAR HASHMI ISLAMABAD : The Islamabad High

Court (IHC) on Wednesday summoned the interior secretary and Okara district coordination officer (DCO) regarding a petition against Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi’s detention. According to details, Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi held hearing of the petition against Lakhvi, who according to India was the mastermind of the Mumbai attacks. Lakhvi’s counsel Rizwan Abbasi said that detention of his client was contempt of court. He urged the court to pursue legal action against the interior secretary and Okara DCO in this regard. The court ordered the two to appear in person in the next hearing on April 4. The court also ordered both of them to submit their replies. Separately, an anti-terrorism court adjourned the hearing in the trial of seven men accused in the Mumbai attacks case until April 1. “The proceedings of the case could not be held today after the ATC Islamabad was informed that the record of the case had been still with the IHC in connection with the government’s plea against Lakhvi’s bail,” prosecution chief Chaudhry Azhar told media after the hearing. “We had requested the court to ensure provision of the record to the trial court

in next Wednesday’s hearing,” he said. Over the past two months, at least five hearings have been adjourned without proceedings because of this reason. The trial has been underway since 2009. The IHC will take up government’s plea for cancellation of bail to Lakhvi on Thursday. The Punjab government on March 14 detained Lakhvi for 30 days under the Maintenance of Public Order, before he could be released by Adiala Jail authorities on the IHC’s order. On December 18, the trial court granted bail to Lakhvi but he was detained the very next day under the MPO. However, the IHC suspended Lakhvi’s detention on “weak legal ground”. Just before he was to be released from the jail, Lakhvi was arrested on charges of kidnapping an Afghan national in 2009. He has got bail in the kidnapping case. Later, the government challenged the IHC’s order in the Supreme Court, which suspended its decision. The 55-year-old Lakhvi again challenged his detention and got relief from the court on March 13. Lakhvi is among the seven persons charged with planning and helping carry out the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The six other men facing trial in Adiala Jail are Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Younas Anjum, Jamil Ahmed, Mazhar Iqbal and Abdul Majid.

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Army on Wednesday killed as many as 31 terrorists in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency, an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement read. The statement added that two ammunition depots were also destroyed. Local sources said a spokesman of the banned terrorist outfit Lashkar-eIslam (LI) Salahuddin Ayubi was among those killed.

At least eight terrorists were killed in a separate operation in Aurakzai Agency, according to security sources.
