Will Chinn, FACHE Chief Operating Officer Ochsner Baptist

Will Chinn, FACHE, is the Chief Operating Officer of Ochsner Baptist and has been with Ochsner for 2.5 years. Will decided to get involved with Employee Giving because he felt that it reinforced his belief in the mission and focus of Ochsner.

“Ochsner is the type of organization where we should all feel proud for the tremendous work happening across our system. It’s easy to realize you’re a part of something big and impactful,” he said.

His favorite part of being an Employee Giving Champion is connecting with our teams and sharing a passion for caring for the community. He also enjoys being able to celebrate engaged employees.

“At Baptist, every week we have random drawings and give away prizes to those who donated. I love giving away the prizes and seeing our teams excitement knowing they won.”

Will donates because he believes in the mission and focus of Ochsner and that our ability to meet and support the community where they have the greatest need is inspiring. He has donated to causes across Ochsner including Diversity and Inclusion efforts, the Milk Bank, Cardiology, Neurology and relief funds for employees. Of his diverse giving he said, “No matter where the gift is going, I know it will be beneficial to our community.”

Thank you, Will, for your generosity, your inspiring words and your exceptional efforts as an Employee Giving Champion!

Employee Assistance Funds

In 2021, the donor-supported Employee Assistance funds made a significant impact on the lives of more than 5,000 employees across Ochsner Health. Through a confidential process, funds are allocated to employees dealing with personal hardships, such as the loss of a spouse’s job, unexpected medical bills, damage to their home, the death of a family member or unexpected expenses that prevent employees from paying their rent, mortgage and utilities or funding other basic necessities. Employees who have received contributions from the Employee Assistance Fund are grateful for your support as they get back on their feet. To learn more, visit ochsner.org/employeeassistance.

Emergency Response

Similar to the Employee Assistance funds, the Emergency Response Fund supports employees experiencing hardships after a natural disaster. This fund, however, is not restricted by region, allowing it to impact employees across Ochsner Health. The Gulf South has experienced numerous challenges over the past year. Multiple COVID-19 surges have strained hospitals, and in August 2021, Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc on Southeast Louisiana. So far, 2022 has already seen a tornado tear through the West Bank and St. Bernard Parish-causing many Ochsner employees and their families to experience damage and destruction of their homes and their communities. Thanks to generous donations to the Emergency Response Fund, Ochsner healthcare heroes have remained steadfast through it all.

Nursing Education and Innovation

Northshore

In 2021, your support provided resources for Northshore nurses to attend the NIH online course for the Primary Stroke Center Survey by the Joint Commission.

Lee Jones Endowed Fund in Baton Rouge

Lee Jones Endowed Fund in Baton Rouge For Nursing Education offers support to nurses at Ochsner who work in the Baton Rouge region. The Lee Jones Endowed Fund helped Annie Smith, an ICU nurse, attend the American Association of Critical Care National Teaching Institute Conference in 2022.

Bayou

The largest portion of the philanthropic funds in the Bayou Region were used to inspire and acknowledge our nursing employees during nurses week and healthcare assistants week. Our Director of Education attended the 2022 Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) Conference, bringing back excellent ideas that we are already implementing. For example, a common discussion among NPD practitioners is around creating an orientation tool and annual competencies for the NPD practitioner. One of the conference sessions gave great examples on how to create this orientation tool based upon the updated NPD scope and standards.

Patty Hanson Nursing Excellence Fund

The Patty Hanson Nursing Excellence Fund, created

in loving memory of lifelong nurse Patty Hanson, provides scholarships to Chamberlain University so that aspiring nurses might continue their education. Congratulations to the most recent recipients!

Westbank

In 2021, your support allowed Angellec Walker, a former Ochsner nurse, to attend Periop 101. In addition, your gift supported the LHA membership fee for Elizabeth Estevez, PI Coordinator.

Ochsner Baptist

In 2021, the Nursing Innovation Fund supported the refurbishment of the Serenity Room for staff, which encourages a moment of mindfulness when team members need to step away and regroup. A ribbon cutting was held at the end of the year. The Nursing Education Fund will be used this year to provide opportunities for in-person training and education.

In addition, in 2021, a generous donor helped open the April Brabham Endowed Fund for Nursing Education. The interest earned on this donation will be an additional source of support to provide funding for nursing education.

Ochsner Health | 6 | Donor Impact Report
April Brabham MSN, HCSM, RN started her career

as an LPN at Ochsner Medical Center and then pursued her RN from LSU New Orleans and worked in the Southern Baptist (now Ochsner Baptist) Cath Lab prior to Hurricane Katrina. In 2010 while working at Ochsner Baptist, she obtained her Bachelor of Nursing Science degree. She then earned a Master of Nursing Science in Healthcare Systems Management from Loyola University New Orleans. Her dedication to nursing and her professional development will always be remembered by her colleagues. She passed away of lung cancer in 2014. April will be fondly remembered by the many lives she touched as a nurse, family member and friend. The April Brabham Endowed Fund for Nursing Education will allow her legacy to live on as it provides essential education for nurses at Ochsner.

New Orleans

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has awarded Ochsner Medical Center with Magnet Designation status for the fourth time in Ochsner’s history! The ANCC awards the Magnet status as the highest credential for nursing practices across the world. It is awarded to healthcare organizations based on their work environment, nursing excellence, innovations in nursing practice and quality patient outcomes. This recognition is a true testament to the quality of our nursing practice and the caliber of nurses in New Orleans. This designation is not possible without the tireless dedication of Louise Saladino, Ecoee Rooney, Director of Nursing Leadership Development, our nursing leadership team, educators and so many of you who showcased what OMC has to offer. This process was both rigorous and thorough for all involved—from the bedside nurse clinicians to the department heads, executive team and members of our Board of Directors. Magnet recognition is an impressive and important distinction for our organization and staff, as well as the communities we serve. We are among

less than 1 percent of hospitals in the U.S. to receive Magnet designation four consecutive times! The Nursing Education Fund supported the travel of staff nurses to attend the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s conference to be recognized.

Nursing Education Grant Fund

The Nursing Education Grant Fund provided support for projects that allow frontline nurses who are uniquely positioned to identify and operationalize change at the bedside to do research into such improvements. One project, Investing in Nurse Creativity, addresses this directly. The purpose of this study was to create a nurse leadership program that addresses frontline clinical problems. They used a structured curriculum to train nurses in leadership topics, communication, change concepts, quality improvement methods, project management and data management and analysis. Each nurse was supported to commit to 96 hours of non-clinical time to identify a specific clinical problem and solve the issue with a team.

Ten teams participated in the program from nine ICUs and one medical/surgical unit. Four of the ICUs chose to look at emergency response, four teams implemented interdisciplinary rounds, one chose to tackle burnout and one looked at noise reduction. Each team demonstrated improvements to the patient and nurse experiences, as well as positive fiscal outcomes at the end of the one-year program. The total fiscal impact is estimated to be more than $1 million.

This program demonstrates that staff nurses can make substantial contributions to their organizations in clinical and fiscal outcomes when provided with non-clinical time.

Building Funds

Ochsner Baptist

Your support helped build an Early Labor Lounge at Ochsner Baptist. The Early Labor Lounge is an “extension” of the waiting room that is a private, quiet place a pregnant woman and her partner can wait to see if she goes into active labor. It is a comfortable place for patients discharged in early labor who do not want to go home. The Labor Lounge is a designated room furnished with recliners and guest chairs for up to two patients/ partners with room dividers. In the room are patient education posters and reading materials as well as meditation, yoga and hydration areas. The Labor Lounge reduces premature admission thus reducing LOS and costs prior to delivery. It also reduces primary c-section rates related to patients being admitted when in active labor prior to admission. We the Lounge was opened prior to COVID-19, but had to be closed during restricted visiting hours. We hope to have space for this again in future planning.

The Baptist Operating Room Fund purchased the following equipment:

• Endoscope washer for reprocessing system

• GYN oncology surgery equipment (Ally Uterine Positioning system and scopes)

• OR table

• Ortho equipment (Trimano fortis Arm and Spider 2 Tenet)

• Blanket warmer and warming cabinet for the OR

• Plastic surgery equipment such as an ultrasound, liposuction machine, and Blanketrol

• Ophthalmology surgery equipment such as eye stretchers

• ENT surgery equipment such as an endo scrub

The NICU Building Fund provided toys and

equipment to the patients of the NICU, such as bases for chair forms so that older infants can participate in active sitting during feedings.

Ochsner St. Anne

The St. Anne Building Fund purchased a new digital sign for the St. Anne campus. The sign helps get the word to the community regarding our free monthly educational seminars. We offer one hour lunch time seminars presented by one of our doctors or nurse practitioners. Other months we offer free nutritional seminars presented by our Registered Dietitian. We also use it to advertise our free Men’s Expo, Women’s Expo, and our annual health fair. At these events we offer free health screenings and free flu vaccines. Our seminars are now booked to capacity, with people on the waiting list. Our expos and Health Fair are also very well attended.

While we had to suspend this service due to COVID-19, we restarted our free community educational luncheon seminars on June 8, 2022. Not only did the digital sign advertise the event, it also advertised our new endocrinologist, who presented at the seminar. The audience response to his presentation was very favorable, and attendees asked to schedule appointments with him.

Also, now that COVID-19 restrictions have been eased, we are able to restart our free Safe Sitter classes for the youth of our community. Students have responded enthusiastically and there is a waiting list to attend the next class.

Your support of the St. Anne Building Fund has provided resources to ensure a more healthy community.

Excellence Fund

Your gifts to support the Excellence Fund at Ochsner provided grants for 59 projects across Ochsner Health in 2021.

One project increased our volume for neonatal transport. We assisted in evacuating three hospitals in Lake Charles during Hurricane Laura, transporting several neonates to New Orleans via ground ambulance. These were patients who would have been flown in a helicopter if we had the ability. With your gift to the Excellence Fund, you helped ensure that babies in our care will have access to these critical resources in the future.

Another 2021 project is bringing continuous glucose monitors to patients with diabetic foot ulcers. The goal of this project is to initiate an intensive insulin regimen and provide continuous glucose monitoring technology in an effort to gain rapid control of blood glucoses to promote wound healing. The Excellence Fund will provide continuous glucose monitors to a pilot group and support dedicated nursing time for education, data gathering and troubleshooting. CGM data is downloaded every 14 days, and reviewed by an endocrine provider who will then adjust insulin doses accordingly. This allows for patients to use some of newest diabetes technology and have frequent contact with their glycemic team to quickly reach glycemic targets to promote wound healing.

Kenner Zebra Fund

The Zebra Fund provides temporary housing assistance for Carcinoid patients treated at OMC-Kenner.

Mothers’ Milk Bank at Ochsner Baptist

The Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist is changing the lives of families across the state, and its success is all thanks to philanthropic donors like you and participating mothers. The facility is one of just 27 active milk banks in the United States accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. The Association sets the standards for nonprofit donor milk banking in North America and works to promote breastfeeding and ethically sourced, equitably distributed milk for babies in need.

Your generosity has helped us increase the volume of milk dispensed by implementing new processes to standardize milk composition and improve lab efficiency. State of the art equipment has enabled us to produce higher-calorie milk for the pre-term infant, as well as lowfat milk for some infants recovering from cardiac surgery. Additionally, our outpatient program served 20 community families in need across our state.

A Universal Hero at the Blood Bank

When COVID-19 swept across New Orleans in 2020, Kaitlyn Seiler was eager to find a way to help. Around the same time, she learned that a relative was diagnosed with a condition that can require regular blood transfusions. Kaitlyn did the formerly unthinkable: she put her lifelong fear of needles aside and donated blood at Ochsner Blood Bank. All of the blood collected at Ochsner’s donor centers and mobile drives helps patients in Southeast Louisiana, giving Kaitlyn the opportunity to support her friends, neighbors and community.

“The staff was so supportive, kind and patient,” she said. “Once I trusted the staff would care for me and support me whenever I went in, it made it easier to commit to going into the clinic on a regular basis.”

After learning that she is a universal donor with type O positive blood, Kaitlyn put her fears aside and became a regular donor. During one visit, she met the

relative of a patient in need of a transplant. She asked donors to list her relative as the donation recipient. Kaitlyn obliged.

“I could see the stress and emotion she was experiencing through this whole ordeal,” Kaitlyn said. “It made me feel like I was really helping patients, just like I wanted to in the beginning.”

For those intimidated to give blood, Kaitlyn recommends eating a big breakfast, staying hydrated, and openly discussing any fears with the staff. Once you donate successfully once, she says, it’s easier the next time around.

“Whenever I’m scared or anxious about donating, I remember that someone in the hospital is having a much worse time than me,” she said. “Because I am grateful and blessed to be healthy and strong, all I need to donate is a little courage.”

Any gifts to the Blood Bank Fund will support the implementation of the electronic records system so that donors do not have to fill out paperwork every time they give blood.

Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read is a national literacy program designed to encourage parents to read to children and promote literacy, which can help identify developmental delays and promote overall healthy growth. Under Ochsner’s Reach Out and Read program, pediatricians encourage parents to participate in the program by giving infant, toddler and preschool pediatric patients a free, developmentally and culturally appropriate book and encouraging parents to read it to their children. Not only is this a tool for children in literacy development, it also allows physicians to further gauge the child’s ability to remember stories, count and eventually to read. Reach Out and Read is available at all Ochsner Pediatric sites.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Diversity and Inclusion Fund provides support for resource groups at Ochsner to carry out their missions. To highlight and build an appreciation for the differences that make us stronger and to address the need of every individual to feel valued and respected, employee resource groups were established representing key interests across Ochsner. These groups have made a substantial impact in our community thanks to your gifts. Some examples of how your support is making a difference are:

• African Americans Building and Leading Equality (ABLE) provided a sponsorship for the NORD Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway event on Saturday, August 13.

• Asian American Innovation Movement (AAIM) provided scholarships for three Asian American and Pacific Islander students to attend STEM NOLA summer camp sessions.

• Women Empowering Women (WoW) sponsored a wellness fair and sponsored Dress for Success.

• Resourceful Experienced Team Rises at Ochsner (RETRO) participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk.

• Exceptional Abilities (EA) participated in the National Alliance on Mental Illness walk.

• People, Resources, Inclusiveness, Diversity, Education (PRIDE) sponsored an Ochsner student scholarship.

COVID-19 Update

In the two years since COVID-19 changed life as we knew it and forced us to pause, Ochsner has been on the forefront of research related to the virus. Thanks to donor support, Ochsner was able to quickly initiate a project to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 infections in New Orleans early in the pandemic. Currently, Principal Investigator Amy Feehan, PhD, is working on identifying the spread of Omicron (BA.1) and its sister variant BA.2.

Nurses across all departments of Ochsner Health answered the call to respond to communities in need during the extended World Health Organization Year of the Nurse. Both 2020 and 2021 were extremely challenging for those in the nursing profession, and your support made a difference by providing educational opportunities, state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated space for mental health.

Patient Assistance Funds

Ochsner Israeli Patient Assistance Fund

Two patients that had liver transplants received support from your generosity. Both patients had limited income resources and were able to get help paying a portion of the hotel stay they needed while recovering.

Ochsner Neuroscience Institute Patient Assistance Fund

Patients often have critical health needs. Unfortunately, their families do not always have resources to be able to get to the hospital to visit or participate in family meetings to discuss patient care. Your support provides Lyft rides for those family members in these situations as it can be detrimental to patient outcome to not have family involvement.

The funds are also used for family members that do not have enough income to afford to eat at the hospital. Your generosity purchases guest trays and snacks they can keep in the room.

To ensure continuity of care post-discharge, funding pays for transportation for patients to complete their post-acute follow-up appointments.

Finally, funds are also used to provide patients without means to stay in the Brent House, when

needed. An example of when this was an important benefit to offer is when we had two patients that came in and were subsequently not able to survive. Brain death studies were needed and they can take a few days to complete. Neither patient’s family wanted to leave the patient; however, only one family member is allowed to spend the night at bedside. The patient families were not from somewhere in a drivable distance, so your support helped pay for the Brent House for the duration of the study so they could be present for the passing of the patient. The ability to utilize these funds has been a invaluable to help the families of the patients we serve and your support is greatly appreciated.

Greg Smith Transplant Patient Assistance Fund

Recently, a pediatric patient needed an emergency transplant. Your support provided funds for one month of prescriptions while insurance was becoming effective. Another patient’s wife was at the bedside 24/7 over the holidays and was in financial need. We provided a meal card to allow her a few hot meals in the cafeteria because of the Greg Smith Fund.

Donor support provided a gas card to a patient with rare kidney disease so he could make it to New Orleans several times in a week. The patient had multiple appointments in one week from far away in Louisiana.

Another patient had a long hospitalization and needed medications upon discharge. One medication was a high cost with no generic options. Your generosity provided assistance toward the non-covered drug.

Ochsner Health | 14 | Donor Impact Report

Ochsner Cancer Institute Patient Assistance Funds

A 59-year old patient was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She worked as a private duty sitter (sitting with people while family is unavailable; caregiver) and couldn’t work after diagnosis and she was insured through Medicaid without short term disability. She couldn’t pay rent or utilities while in treatment. Your support through the patient assistance fund paid for two months rent and kept her utilities up to date.

A 51-year-old walking tour guide in the French Quarter was diagnosed with cancer. Her job offered no benefits. She was admitted for surgery and ultimately chemotherapy. Your generosity helped her with rent and utilities.

Another patient has insurance but found out at the time of discharge that her policy has limited prescription benefits ($500 for the whole year), which she had reached already.

She had $360 worth of prescriptions needed for discharge. The fund paid for prescriptions so she could go home with the medicines she needed (including pain medicine) thanks to your support.

The Radiation Transportation Fund is a crucial resource that assists patients coming for radiation treatments because you have to come so frequently (everyday for 4-6 weeks) and you can’t miss a treatment. A 61-year-old patient with brain cancer who worked as an oyster/fisherman and was no longer able to work. He lives in a camper approximately 30 miles each way from the treatment facility. He has minimal family support and does not own a car. The patient needed five radiation treatments and donor support was able to provide transportation to appointments.

Another patient, 55-years-old and diagnosed with lung cancer, lives with her daughter who is her primary caregiver. Her daughter is pregnant with a high-risk pregnancy and can no longer drive her to/from appointments, so the Radiation Transportation support ensured she was able to make it.

St. Charles Patient and Family Assistance Fund

The St. Charles Patient and Family Assistance Fund provided support for 11 patients so that they could get their medications when they were discharged. Many of the patients treated at St. Charles are Behavioral Health patients.

Heart Transplant Patient Assistance

When Rosalie Pietri began experiencing shortness of breath in November 2021, she assumed it was a side effect from one of her heart medications. Her doctor was aware of her existing heart condition, so they kept a watchful eye over her symptoms. But as her breathing worsened over the next few months, life became unmanageable. “I couldn’t walk from the front of my house to the back without taking a break,” Rosalie explained. “I couldn’t breathe. When I contacted my cardiologist, he decided I should go to the emergency room right away.”

When she arrived at Ochsner Medical Center - New Orleans, relief set in immediately. “From the minute I got there, the nurse in the emergency room assured me that everything would be okay. It was like I was the most important patient they had at the time.”

Rosalie was diagnosed with heart failure, and entered Ochsner’s Heart Failure Transitional Care Clinic. After consulting with doctors and adjusting her medications, she was cleared to go home if she felt comfortable.

Designed to reduce hospital readmissions, the four-to-six week care clinic gives patients living with heart failure the tools and knowledge they need to manage their chronic illness and make smart choices on a daily basis.

“Before I left the hospital, I was given a blood pressure cuff and symptom tracker, a pamphlet about the program, and a phone number I could call at any time,” Rosalie explained. “They told me to expect a call from them in 46-72 hours.”

One of the greatest resources patients get from the clinic is its staff, and particularly Lisa Tichenor, a registered heart failure nurse who helped to launch the Heart Failure Transitional Care Clinic in October 2021. Lisa brings over 10 years of experience working with advanced heart failure patients to the program.

“Our patients are dealing with physically broken hearts—but also spiritual and mental heartbreak. Our job is to empower them to take control of their health, so they can get back to living,” Lisa explained.

Ochsner Health | 16 | Donor Impact Report

None of this would be possible without support from the Heart Transplant Patient Assistance fund, which provides patients like Rosalie with blood pressure cuffs and scales.

These tools also have a profound impact on patient morale. “When we handed them out, it was like Christmas. The patients were shocked. The blood pressure cuffs and scales meant everything to them,” Lisa shared.

“This is why donor support is so crucial. These tools can be the difference between life and death,” she explained. “A blood pressure cuff and scale cost almost nothing, but it’s really the gift of success—the opportunity for patients to take ownership over their care.”

Code Blue Psychiatry Fund

The Code Blue Psychiatry Fund assists patients who are experiencing a personal “code blue”: whether they need help paying for an overdue light bill or to put groceries on the table, we are here to bridge the financial gap so that patients can continue with uninterrupted mental health treatment.

Recently, this fund helped one patient pay first month’s rent to move into their own apartment after they were discharged from the hospital--a crucial step to help this patient maintain a safe and healthy living environment while regaining self-confidence and independence. Additionally, your generous donations to the Code Blue Fund provide resources for transportation to and

from appointments, household items and school supplies for children, and so much more.

Child Life Fund

Ochsner Hospital for Children would not be the nurturing place it is without Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS), professionals who are trained to help the littlest patients cope in aiding the healing process and elevating the quality of care for children.

In 2021, our donors funded support for additional CCLS at Ochsner Medical ComplexThe Grove in Baton Rouge, along with resources like specialized medical teaching dolls, distraction and normalization items and patient support initiatives.

“New programming requires many resources, and we are so thankful to have your generosity provide new CCLSs with the tools they need to support the emotional health and educational needs of children throughout Ochsner Health,” said Whitney Cole, Child Life Department Supervisor at Ochsner Hospital for Children.

Why I Give

“I had the honor and privilege to donate to the Haitian Relief Fund last year. The act of giving to this fund goes directly to alleviate the pain and suffering of those less fortunate brings a great sense of humility, joy and deep purpose. We at Ochsner are at our core a charitable organization that is committed to never being indifferent to those in need. Giving to the fund for me is a pro-social and empowering act of compassion.

The amazing thing about the experience of donating is the benefit that it brings to my heart and soul far exceeds the value of my donation. In the end it is not the amount or value of the donation that is important but it is the kindness and compassion and love that accompanies the act of giving while expecting nothing in return that lifts my spirit and connects me to my purpose.

We give to benefit others but paradoxically it is us who benefit the most from the act of giving.”

Ochsner Health | 18 | Donor Impact Report

“Donating to both the Employee Assistance Fund and the Haitian Relief Fund was a humbling honor in appreciation of Ochsner’s service to both a global workforce and patient community. Having experienced loss and need for recovery assistance firsthand, I am grateful to give back to a community that has given much to me. Thank you Ochsner for answering the call when support is essential to revitalizing our communities.”

“As a proud Ochsner employee for over 30 years, I feel honored to be an employee giving champion. This opportunity has allowed me to help our employees be active contributors to one the numerous programs that help support our employees and patients. Our donations literally change lives for those that need it. I am grateful to be a part of a culture of giving and making a positive difference.“
