All together now: Watermore School could finally be on one site AN ambition to have all classes at Watermore Primary School in Frampton Cotterell on one site could eventually be realised.

A £4.5 million scheme to remodel and extend the junior site in Lower Stone Close is expected to be recommended for inclusion in a capital programme that will be debated by the full South Gloucestershire Council in mid-February.

The school and council have wanted all staff and pupils in one location since Watermore was created through the merger of Brockeridge Infant School and Highcroft Junior School in 2011.

But they have remained on separate sites in different roads due to a lack of funding.

Now, with the school having to take in more children as a result of house building in the area, together with a growing list of repairs and maintenance to be tackled, the change could finally happen.

If the council backs the scheme, it will involve selling the infant site in Woodend Road to help fund the redesigned and extended school in Lower Stone Close. Full story Page 4

Exhibition highlights history of South Gloucestershire’s people and places A DIGITAL exhibition of historic maps and archive material relating to South Gloucestershire and the West of England is running until the end of February.

The interactive KYPexplore display in Bradley Stoke library is part of the Know Your Place West of England project and features images from archives, museums and heritage collections across the area.

It also tells the stories of the people who lived and worked in the region, from fishermen to Second World War evacuees,

using photographs and recollections of memorable local events.

The exhibition combines graphic panels, touchscreens and an online web application to present the archive material.

Visitors can also take a closer look at familiar places to compare historic and modern photos of familiar landscapes which illustrate how places have transformed over time.

n NEWS CALLS have been made for extra money for repairs to the Bromley Heath viaduct on the Avon ring road in order to speed up the project.

The £5.9 million programme of work is due to start in June or July and take a year to complete.

But a further £3.7 million would allow the scheme to be finished in 22 weeks instead of 52, reducing the anticipated traffic delays.

The work involves strengthening the 1960s structure and making improvements for cyclists and pedestrians.

The work will be carried out on the westbound section between the Bromley Heath roundabout and the Hambrook/ Bristol Road junction.

South Gloucestershire Council said it was decided to start work in the summer for a maximum duration of one year but with the aim of lobbying for extra funding to accelerate the programme.

Planning and transport lead member, Councillor Colin Hunt, said: “The coming years will see significant development across the area, so it’s vital that our major road network is able to cope with this increase in growth.

“We now have the opportunity to bring the viaduct up to standard and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists at the same time.

“The schemes are funded by the Department for Transport and are time limited, so it is

important that we have agreed a way forward.”

Mark King, the head of streetcare and transport, said: “The extent of the work requires the southern viaduct to be completely closed to all traffic for the duration of the project.

“This is because the removal of the worn out parts of the structure will mean it is too weak to safely carry any traffic until

the maintenance is complete.

“During the closure, all traffic will be diverted on to the northern viaduct as other options would require a significant one to two-mile diversion on to narrow roads.

“We appreciate this is one of the busiest sections of the A4174 and understand this will cause significant delays and inconvenience.

“We will be doing everything we can to keep the public regularly informed about the viaduct work and how to plan their journeys accordingly.

“We are also looking at the scheduling of current and future transport schemes, utility work and other roadworks to ensure disruption to road users and communities is kept to a minimum, wherever possible.”

Siblings run the Bath Half Marathon to help arthritis charity A BROTHER and sister from Winterbourne are gearing up to run the Bath Half Marathon after seeing their dad diagnosed with arthritis.

Hayley and Craig Smith are running in the event on 12 March for the National Rheumatoid Arthitis charity.

Hayley told the Voice; “After speaking to the NRAS team we realised how unrecognised &

unspoken about those disease actually is. Our dad was diagnosed with this disease at a young age of 41 and has been receiving treatment for five years which is ongoing.”

Hopes to rebuild school could be realised under £4.5 million scheme WATERMORE Primary School in Frampton Cotterell could be rebuilt under a major scheme being proposed for the next South Gloucestershire Council budget.

The school has operated on two separate sites since 2011 when Brockeridge Infant School and Highcroft Junior School merged.

But they are in different roads and the set-up has been described as “an operational challenge” in a report going to the council’s policy and resources committee on February 6.

At the time of the decision to amalgamate the schools, the council said it wanted to eventually have all staff and pupils in one place - on the junior site in Lower Stone Close.

But as a result of a lack

of funding, that has not yet happened, despite a number of bids to the Department for Education.

Meanwhile, a backlog of repairs and maintenance has grown and the report said there was increasing urgency to spend £1.6 million on such work, with no guarantee of the longer term value for money and none of it addressing the main fabric of the buildings.

It is now proposed to allocate £4.5 million in the budget on rebuilding the school, which would allow the infant site in Woodend Road to be sold, together with a small piece of land on the corner of the junior site.

The council said the Frampton Cotterell area had seen new house building in recent years, which was leading to increased demand for primary school places, and Watermore had provided 30 extra reception class places each year since 2014.

Its report said: “The split site nature of the existing school brings about various challenges in the organisation of the additional classes.

“The extended and

remodelled school will provide additional classroom space for expanded year groups.

“A budget of £4.5 million is required for this project, which includes addressing repairs and maintenance issues at the junior site.”

The scheme is part of a capital programme that the policy and resources committee will be asked to agree and to recommend to the full council for approval on February 15.

Zion pre-school given good assessment by Ofsted A LONG established pre-school in Frampton Cotterell has been given a rating of good by an education inspector.

Zion Community Pre-school, based in Zion United Church Hall, Woodend Road, was first registered in 1970.

Ofsted inspector June Robinson said staff had a good understanding of the children’s abilities and interests, using that knowledge effectively to plan a wide range of engaging activities.

She said the children were well behaved and staff were good role models, with parents kept fully informed of their youngsters’ learning.

Ms Robinson said the staff also supported parents with ideas on how they could help their children’s learning further at home.

Silverhill School rated as outstanding SILVERHILL School in Winterbourne has been rated as outstanding by Ofsted, maintaining the outcome of its previous inspection.

The education watchdog said teachers were highly motivated and passionate about their work, which instilled a love of learning in pupils at the independent school.

There was an extensive curriculum and wide ranging number of extra activities for the children, who were kind, caring and considerate to each other, displaying exemplary behaviour.

Lead inspector Jen Southall highlighted the dedication of head teacher Jenifer Capper, “excellent” relationships between staff and pupils and the “relentless” quest by Silverhill’s leaders to further improve the school.

She also said the early years provision was outstanding, as a consequence of which, pupils were well prepared for the next stage of their education.

Ofsted’s report said: “The well-being of every pupil is of paramount importance to staff.

They are exceptionally vigilant in their approach to their welfare and safeguard them effectively.

“Parents speak highly of the school. They appreciate the quality of education and care that the school provides for their children.”

Learn about apple grafting at the Medieval Ban PEOPLE are being given the opportunity to find out more about apple grafting at a workshop, run by Ben Raskin of the Soil Association.

The event, on Saturday 25 February from 10am - 4pm will explain why people graft and some of the techniques used. It will involve individual hands-on work in learning to cut the wood and prepare it for grafting.

People who attend will make your own graft from start to finish, ending up with a new apple tree. There will be the opportunity to make at least three grafts.

The only equipment needed is a very sharp knife, eg. Stanley Knife. The workshop cost is £35 payable in advance, plus £7.50 on the day for materials. If demand is sufficient, it may be repeated the following weekend.

Ridings’ Federation trustees remain at Winterbourne academy WINTERBOURNE International Academy will remain the responsibility of Ridings’ Federation trustees for the time being as they oversee action aimed at improving the school.

Lord Nash, the schools minister, said consideration could then be given to transferring the academy to another trust.

The minister recognised that the federation, which has been experiencing troubled times lately, needed help in the work required at Winterbourne (WIA) and he welcomed the involvement of a consortium of two locally-based education trusts.

Olympus Academy Trust (OAT) and Castle School Education Trust (CSET) had submitted a joint proposal to take over sponsorship of WIA and are currently providing interim leadership support at the academy.

That includes the secondment of Peter Smart, headteacher of the Castle School in Thornbury, to the post of interim principal for the rest of the academic year.

Meanwhile, the South West office of the Regional Schools Commissioner will monitor progress at WIA and review the situation later in the year.

The Ridings’ Federation of Academies has been in a state of turmoil for some time, experiencing a financial crisis, poor Ofsted ratings and the departure of two consecutive chief executive principals after just a matter of months.

A potential £1 million deficit by the end of the current academic year also led to an official notice to improve finances being issued by the Education Funding Agency.

WIA and its partner Yate International Academy - both of which require improvement.

As a result, Winterbourne and Yate academies will go their separate ways, with Greenshaw Learning Trust becoming the new sponsor of the Yate campus.

The Ridings’ trustees said they hoped the transfer would go ahead on September 1.

They said: “The board is also pleased to see that the new OAT/CSET interim leadership arrangement is creating a calm and purposeful learning environment at WIA. “This is being led day-today by Peter Smart as interim principal and overseen and aided by the experienced executive leadership provided by Dave Baker in his role as interim chief executive principal.”

OAT/CSET could yet take over WIA but at the moment, the target is the academy’s pupils.

Mr Smart said: “Over the

coming weeks, I will be very active in getting to know all members of the school community and ensuring that we focus on the students achieving their very best.”

Plans for up to 215 new homes at Woodlands Farm submitted by developers DEVELOPERS have formally submitted their expected plan to build up to 215 homes at Woodlands Farm, Coalpit Heath.

The controversial outline application is for land which the house builders have called Blackberry Park.

Local people and councillors became aware last year about the proposal through letters they received.

Now South Gloucestershire Council is inviting comments by February 15.

Barton Willmore, on behalf of Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, said the scheme covered 37 acres and included 35 per cent of affordable housing, with vehicle access off Park Lane.

It said: “The site is suitable for development. It is not in the green belt or of high landscape value. It is not covered by any ecological designations and it is not at risk of flooding.”

It also said the development “would make an appropriate and attractive addition to Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath that would reflect the character of the existing settlement, respond to the site characteristics and integrate with the surrounding development” while helping to meet a housing shortfall in the district.

But there is opposition to the plan for the site, which is regarded locally as an important green space.

A previous scheme for 380 homes was rejected after a major campaign and despite the smaller scale of the current plan, objectors said it would still result in hundreds more cars on the roads and have an effect on wildlife and heritage.

THE controversial policy of turning off many street lights in South Gloucestershire for several hours a night is to end.

Changes in technology mean it is now cheaper to keep the street lights on but dimmed in the early hours than to switch them off.

South Gloucestershire’s Environment and Community Services Committee has therefore voted to drop part-night lighting, which began in 2008 and was fully implemented by 2014.

Committee chair Councillor Heather Goddard said: “As part of an efficiency drive, the previous cross-party administration took the decision to switch off street lights for part of the night.

“This was controversial in some areas, particularly where there were concerns over road safety and crime, and I know most councillors have been contacted with concerns about street lighting.

“As such I am pleased to say that advancing technology allows us to reinstate whole-night lighting by dimming lights after a period of time, rather than switching them off. This will still save us money – it is a win-win that allows us to offer better service at reduced cost.”

Labour’s lead member on the committee, Councillor Ian Boulton, said: “I am pleased to support this move, which takes Labour’s proposal of three years ago further forward. Turning the street lights off has proved controversial, and I suspect that many residents will welcome this change of policy.

"It will cause a very small increase in CO2 emissions, which I regret, but we will be monitoring further advances in technology which will hopefully address this over time.”

Wildlife at the heart of Valentine’s Day family walk A LOVE wildlife family walk has been organised to mark St Valentine’s Day at Says Court, near Coalpit Heath.

Billed as an alternative way to celebrate the day, the event will give people the chance to look for the first signs of spring around the farmland and to make a bird feeder to take home.

They will even be able to make a wild flower seed Valentine’s card.

Says Court is the site of a solar farm, where wildlife friendly habitats are being developed.

Thousands of trees have already been planted, while a barn owl corridor and a wildflower meadow also sit near the energy producing panels.

When planning permission

was given for the scheme, Westerleigh Parish Council negotiated a community benefit of £19,000 a year for the life of the development, which is estimated to be 25 years.

Part of that agreement involved the council working with Avon Wildlife Trust to establish the wildlife habitats over a period of five years, together with an education programme and wildlife walks.

The February 14 walk will run from 1pm-2.30pm and is suitable for all ages, although the terrain is unsuitable for pushchairs, with all children to be accompanied by an adult.

Admission is £2.50, with under-fives allowed in free.

Bishop announces his retirement

Knighthood for former MP Steve Webb

ONE of Winterbourne’s most prominent residents has announced his forthcoming retirement, with the Bishop of Bristol set to stand down later this year.

The Right Rev Mike Hill became the 56th bishop of the diocese in 2003 and has announced he will retire on September 30.

Bishop Mike said he made the decision after he and his wife, Anthea, had agreed the timing was right.

He said: “I have loved my time in this diocese and there are many people I shall deeply miss. Working with colleagues, both lay and ordained has been a privilege and a gift.

“There will be many opportunities between now and September 30 to say more but my overwhelming sense is a deep gratitude for the privilege of serving among you all. Please pray for Anthea and me as we prepare for this next phase of our lives.”

Bishop Mike’s final service will be in Bristol Cathedral on Saturday, September 23, at 3.30pm. More details will be released nearer the time.

FORMER Thornbury and Yate MP Steve Webb was given a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours.

Sir Steve represented the former Northavon constituency and then Thornbury and Yate for the Liberal Democrats since 1997 until losing his seat in 2015.

He was also the pensions minister in the coalition Government for five years.

Sir Steve, who is now director of policy at the mutual insurer Royal London, was given his honour in recognition of his political and public service.

He continues to raise issues about pensions in his new role but decided not to stand for parliament in the next election.

Fit Framptonites off at a trot 200 RUNNERS are set to take to the Frampton Cotterell countryside to raise money for a local school.

The Frampton Globe Trot sold out in 29 hours when it went on line and those lucky enough to get a place can expect to get dirty.

The 8 mile off-road race has been organised by three parents from Frampton Cotterell CofE Primary School, Claire Fletcher, Wayne Inker and Caroline Macdonald.

The race on Saturday 25 March starts and finishes at the Globe pub and takes in the surrounding countryside with lots of mud, stiles and water hazards.

Badminton Horse Trials tickets go on sale TICKETS have gone on sale for the 2017 running of the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials.

Thousands of spectators are set to head for the prestigious event in May to see many of the world’s best riders and horses in action.

Billed as the world’s premier three-day-event, the international could be a pointer for selection for teams heading to this year’s European eventing championships in Poland in August.

All eyes will also be on the cross-country course, which is being designed for the first time

by Eric Winter.

He has taken over the role from Giuseppe Della Chiesa, who surprised followers of the sport

when he announced after the completion of the 2016 trials that he was standing down from the position after just three years.

Mr Winter used to live in Yatton, near Bristol, before taking on Severnvale Equestrian Centre, Chepstow, with his wife, Lizzel.

As a rider, he completed Badminton in 1991 and for the past ten years he has designed the cross-country track at the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials.

Badminton runs from May 3-7, with the main event taking place from May 4-7. It will be preceded by the annual Mitsubishi Motors Cup challenge for grassroots riders.

JOHN the Baptist is a significant figure in the gospels. He’s sometimes called ‘the forerunner’, as he goes ahead of Jesus, preparing the way. He was an independent and strong-minded character, but did he know what he was doing?

John the Baptist says twice ‘I myself did not know him’, referring to Jesus.

Of course, he did know him, as he was a cousin of his. What he means, though, is that he did not understand his significance. But then he has a sudden realisation, and calls Jesus the ‘Lamb of God,who takes away the sin of the world’, a sacrificial lamb.

Significance and meaning can be elusive. I wonder if we sometimes ‘don’t notice’, like John the Baptist. As we approach the church season of Lent we have a ready-made opportunity to take time to reflect on meaning and significance. In Lent churches traditionally focus on the areas of prayer, charitable giving, and repentance.

Metro mayor candidates line up for May election

Cathedral to host artwork by Winterbourne students

CONSERVATIVES and the Green Party have announced their candidates for the election to choose a new metro mayor for the West of England combined authority.

South Gloucestershire councillor Tim Bowles, who represents Winterbourne, will stand for the Tories, while Darren Hall will be the Green candidate.

The election on May 4 will choose a mayor for the area covered by South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath and North East Somerset.

It is part of a £1 billion devolution deal where the Government gives more power and funding to the regions in areas such as transport, housing, business support and investment.

Each council will continue to keep its responsibilities and provide local services, with their individual leaders forming the new mayor’s cabinet.

Mr Bowles, who was elected a councillor in 2010 and 2015, works in sales and marketing, most recently as new business manager for a global events company.

Mr Hall, who grew up in Berkeley, stood for the Greens in Bristol West in the 2015 parliamentary elections. He is a magazine and website editor and founding director of a community interest company.

ARTWORK by pupils at Winterbourne International Academy will be included in an exhibition being staged in Bristol Cathedral.

The annual Senior Schools’ Art Exhibition runs from February 9-21, with judging to be carried out by members of the historic arts society, the Bristol Savages.

Admission is free, with the entries from a number of schools on show in the nave aisles.

Yate council offices to accommodate more than 200 extra staff MORE than 200 staff will be relocated to South Gloucestershire Council ’s Yate office in Badminton Road from the end of April as part of a costcutting move.

The change for the workers means plans are being drawn up to extend the car park at the Yate site, where it’s possible that more than 100 extra spaces will be created.

However, the council said it hoped those staff switching to Badminton Road would choose “green travel” options - public transport, cycling or car sharing to get to and from work.

The people to be relocated are currently based at Kingswood Civic Centre, part of which is being leased to the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership (AWP) later this year.

South Gloucestershire will

maintain ownership of the building and continue to use its civic and training facilities, including the council chamber, while saving around £400,000 in running costs and making better use of the Badminton Road offices.

The majority of staff - around 220 - will switch to Yate but some 100 who need to be in Kingswood to provide locallybased services will remain.

The council is continuing to consult with staff on exact details of the plans but expects the affected employees to move to Yate from late April to July this year, ahead of AWP moving into the civic centre in September.

AWP has agreed to a 20-year lease of the space it requires and the council said it was in discussions with other organisations about potentially leasing space in other areas of

the civic centre.

Should those discussions be successful, the council said it

would result in further income being generated and pressure on other budgets being reduced.

Recycling centre to close for four months HOUSEHOLDERS in the Frome Valley area who use Mangotsfield Sort It! recycling centre will have to take rubbish elsewhere while the facility is closed for an upgrade.

Work will continue until the end of May on significant improvements to the transfer station and recycling yard attached to the Mangotsfield site.

South Gloucestershire Council has urged people who normally use Mangotsfield to take their rubbish to its other recycling sites in Little Stoke, Yate and Thornbury during the closure.

It said the work being carried out would prepare the Mangotsfield centre for new weekly recycling collections that are due to start across the district in June.

Later in the year, householders will also have their 240-litre black wheelie bins replaced with smaller 140-litre containers.

The moves are aimed at helping the district cut waste and recycle 50 per cent of its rubbish by 2020.

n AROUND THE COMMUNITY Bradley Stoke Lions Bradley Stoke Lions recently presented a cheque for £300 to the Bristol Interstitial Lung Supprt Group. Heather Lamb who, with her colleagues from Southmead Hospital hold a support group meeting every three months in a church hall in Southmead. This support group is run on a voluntary basis as no funding is available from the NHS, so our cheque will help to fund the cost of hiring the hall for the next year.

Caring at Christmas, the organisation set up over the Christmas period in the Julian Trusts premises in Little Biship Street, St Pauls, also benefited from a cheque for £200 from BS Lions. This organisation provided 60 beds each night from Christmas Eve until New Years Day for the Homeless of Bristol (and beyond). Breakfast, lunch and dinner were available each day as well as a never ending supply of sandwiches, cakes, crisps, fruit and sweets and hot and cold beverages of every description, for anyone

who cared to drop in who needed company or just a meal. A hairdresser, masseuse, chiropodist and arts and crafts specialists were also on hand with occasional live music, TV and various games available to keep the guests amused and occupied during their stay. Some of our Lions also gave of their time to work a few shifts at the shelter and found it a rewarding experience, well worth doing.

Noah a young boy who was born with a bleed on the brain and consequently suffers from Cerebral Palsy and severe visual impairment amongst other problems, needs a machine called an Innovative Walker to help him walk and strengthen his muscles. His family have been raising the £11,000 required for this walker for some time now and Bradley Stoke Lions have just gifted the last £300 to complete the purchase.

We have one of our social nights coming up on 8th March when we are combining a short meeting with a Pancake Night.

Thursday Travel Club The club’s latest meeting had a presentation from Shaun McCormack about the ‘Queen’s Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard’. He told us the history and creation of the guard, recruitment and strengths, duties and dress of the organisation.

He showed us his uniform and explained their use and history. He is still a serving Yeoman and told us about his duties at the opening of parliament, state visits,

investitures and also checking the House of Lords for any gunpowder plot (but only after the police sniffer dogs had checked the building first!).

It was all told with good humour and we would recommend his talk to any club.

Myrian of Beauty Plus gives a talk at Frampton Cotterell WI

this time of year, in particular with regard to our face, neck, hands and feet. And two of our lucky members were treated to pampering foot and hand treatments on the night! Myriam also held a prize draw, with the

prize being a hot stone massage at her salon - the proceeds of the draw were donated to Paul’s Place.

The annual members’ meal out at Alveston House Hotel near Thornbury takes place on

February 7th, so we’re all looking forward to a proper catch up alongside some fine food and a drink or two.

Later on in the year we even have a belly dancing class with a professional dancer, which should be fun to say the least!

News from Frampton Floral Friends

COMMUNITY Sensory Garden to be officially opened The new Sensory Garden will be officially opened on Saturday 29th April 2017 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.: everyone will be welcome to join us to celebrate the Garden. Tea, coffee and cakes will be available, and plants will be offered for sale.

The hard landscaping is now complete in the Sensory Garden and a kissing gate has been installed. Wooden sculptures and log steps will be added to the woodchip area and in the Spring, Floral Friends will plant fragrant herbs and edible plants in the borders. Two picnic benches will be set up to enable people to relax and enjoy the Garden.

The Floral Hat Festival – an exhibition of hats decorated or made with flowers to remember our local hatting industry and celebrate Summer flowers – will be open on the weekend of 24th-25th June 2017 at the Zion United Church, Frampton Cotterell.. Community Action Fund applications welcomed by police and crime commissioner VOLUNTARY organisations and community groups are being invited to apply for grants of up to £3,000 from a fund set up by police and crime commissioner Sue Mountstevens.

The Community Action Fund money can be used for projects that support priorities in the police and crime plan and which benefit local people.

So far, the fund has awarded more than £595,000 to various groups since being established in May 2013 but it was closed temporarily pending publication of the police and crime plan.

Ms Mountstevens said the fund had supported schemes such as a flower garden to reduce anti-social behaviour, an interactive game to educate young people about the danger of drugs and a digital toolkit to improve education on healthy relationships.

Applications can be made throughout the year, with decisions made quarterly by trustees.

Power operator looking to take on 89 new apprentices THE operator that provides electricity to homes and businesses in South Gloucestershire is looking to recruit new apprentices.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) said it wanted to take on 89 craft apprentices in 2017.

WPD owns and operates the electricity distribution network not only in South Gloucestershire but also throughout the South West, the Midlands and South Wales.

It said its apprenticeships took between two and three years to complete in order to reach the role of qualified craftsman or woman.

Theresa McConville, WPD’s engineering training manager, said: “Our apprentices have the opportunity to work towards an industry-specific qualification while gaining hands-on experience at a local depot.”

Once qualified, they could work on either overhead lines, the underground cable network or in substations maintaining equipment.

Applications can be made online through the WPD website, with a deadline of February 10.

Still chance to catch a pantomime ALTHOUGH Christmas may be a distant memory, there is still an opportunity to enjoy a pantomime.

Thornbury Musical Theatre Group is putting on a production of The Snow Queen over the half term holidays. The group won a Rose Bowl award for their pantomime last year and this year’s production has been written and will be directed by TMTG’s Lizzie Lindsell.

Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale this pantomime promises tapdancing penguins.

Performances at the Armstrong Hall are from 15 to 18 February at 7.30 pm nightly and matinées at 2.30 pm on the Friday and Saturday. Tickets are bookable online at www.tmtg. org.uk with no booking fee.

Temporary pool for Yate during leisure centre refurbishment BOTH swimming pools in Yate’s leisure centre will be closed from April through to the autumn to allow essential maintenance and refurbishment to take place.

But a temporary pool will be opened at the rear of the Kennedy Way car park while the work takes place so that swimming can continue in the town.

Circadian Trust, the social enterprise which runs the centre, said both public swimming and lessons would carry on in the temporary pool throughout the closure of the main 25-metre pool and the smaller “learner” pool.

It said the two pools would shut down at the end of March, with the temporary structure opening on April 1 to keep disruption to a minimum.

However, Circadian said there would be some effect on changing facilities and car parking as a result of the work and having the temporary pool operating, with regular updates to be displayed in the centre building.

But it said admission fees and opening times would be the same as normal, all swimming lessons would continue and lesson days and times would remain unchanged.

The temporary pool will be 18-metres long and ten-metres wide, with a depth of one metre.

Its frame will be constructed mainly of wood, then lined with a sand base and a pool liner.

Swimmers will be able to reach it from the corridor of the main building using an enclosed walkway, so they will be under

cover at all times.

But anyone who doesn’t want to use the temporary facility can use the pools at the other Active Centres in Bradley Stoke, Longwell Green, Kingswood and Thornbury.

The trust said the Yate pools and plant equipment required essential maintenance work in order to remain in operation.

Pipework and plant will be replaced with new, environmentally friendly equipment which will secure the future sustainability of the facilities.

A spokesman for Circadian said: “We want there to be minimal disruption to customers and the team at Yate look forward to welcoming customers into the refurbished pool in the autumn.”

n NEWS A BRISTOL Rovers supporter is hoping to raise £10,000 for charity to mark the 10-year anniversary of his wife's death.

Mark Brimson was left bereft after his "soul mate" Gloria died in June 2007 following complications during brain surgery.

Her death left a huge void in Mark's life and, by his own admission, he has found her loss difficult to come to terms with.

He believes putting his efforts into raising money to help others suffering from brain injuries will be a fitting tribute to Gloria as well as helping him continue his journey in coming to terms with her untimely death.

Mark, 42, has set up the Gloria Brimson Foundation to raise money for Headway Bristol, a charity which helps survivors of brain injuries.

"It's been a tough nine years for me," Mark said.

"Gloria was my soul mate. We were together from a young age so she was all I really knew. She was the life and soul of the party and loved to go out and dance.

She just loved being around people and everyone who met her liked her. She was one of those infectious people.

"I wanted to mark the 10th anniversary year in a positive way instead of making it a miserable one like all the other years have been.

"I chose Headway Bristol as, had Gloria survived the operation, she would have gone through their doors, so it made perfect sense."

Gloria, who was just 33 when she died, was diagnosed with an AVM - Arteriovenous Malformation - which in its simplest form is a cluster of

abnormal blood vessels in the brain.

She underwent a 15 hour operation to remove the vessels but died on June 7, 2007 from complications.

Although Mark has arranged various fundraisers in support of the charity, his main mission is a sponsored walk from the home of Plymouth Argyle FC to Bristol Rovers' base at the Memorial Stadium. He will be joined by eight friends he met through work and football.

I also wanted to walk a marathon a day for five days and the 127 miles involved from Plymouth to Bristol works out at that. We will be walking about eight hours a day so we've now stepped up our training. I'm walking about eight miles a night at the moment and will gradually build that up."

Mark, who runs a business providing till systems and credit and debit card machines, said his fundraising mission to help others has played a huge role in him moving on.

"We were together for 15 years and it's hard to adapt to the shock of what's happened.

Nothing really prepares you for losing a person you lived with and it's taking me longer to accept than I probably would have expected it to. The fundraising is part of letting go and moving forward with my life.

"It's a case of trying to find myself again and it's definitely helping me get back to my old self. Me getting out doing exercise has also helped. I feel it's a really good thing to be doing, both mentally and physically."

Sarah Trevatt, is fundraising via a JustGiving page which is already up to more than £2,000.

He said: "Online we are up to about £2,200 but we've had some pledges come in offline so we're already about 50 per cent on the way to our £10,000 target.

"All the people doing the walk with me are good friends.

They never met Glo so I'm really humbled by them doing it because effectively they're doing it for me. I think it will be a real 'Band of Brothers' moment that I will look back on in years to come.

"It's going to be great; I'm really looking forward to it."

The fund is being boosted my many of Mark's friends who have organised their own fundraisers including 10k runs and cycle rides.

Health chiefs urge women to take up tests A QUARTER of women aged 25-29 in South Gloucestershire failed to attend potentially life saving cervical cancer screening in the past five years.

Although the district had the highest percentage take-up in the South West, figures show that 2,226 women in the age group were still not screened.

For all eligible ages - those from 25-64 - one in five missed out. That amounted to 12,699 women.

The number of women dying from cervical cancer has dropped by almost a quarter over the past ten years.

But the disease is still claiming lives. In 2014, a total of 890 women in the UK died as a result of cervical cancer.

Now health chiefs are urging women to go for screening when they are invited to do so by their GP.

We’ll visit schools to talk about the issues, but it’s important for parents and guardians to take an active interest in their children’s use of the internet. Please talk with them about staying safe in the digital world, not just on internet safety day, but often.

Other sites, like www.nspcc.org. uk have good advice too, so check them out to find out more about

Finally, some apps require users to be above a certain age. This restriction is to protect our child from inappropriate material. Is it really a good idea to allow our children to falsify their age to use an app, condoning the breaking of a rule designed to keep them safe?

Keeping people safe on our roads is an issue concerning many residents. People living in Winterbourne have reported issues with an off-road motorbike being driven anti-socially around the village in January.

The bike was reported as being very loud and driven with no lights or indicators around the village.

My colleagues PC Elizabeth Ball and PCSO Jacqui McCormack identified a young man as being responsible. He has been served a notice which means that if the motorbike is driven in an antisocial manner again we will seize it.

How the magical can become commonplace Even small cars can cram in a lot nowadays, as Richard Drew found out WHAT is luxury for one generation is considered standard by the next.

Take the average British house. In the fifties, families kept warm with one coal fire and a lot of clothes; bathroom arrangements were often to be found at the bottom of the garden. Now it’s all central heating, log burners and two ensuites in your semi.

As with houses, so it is with cars. Those of us with the odd grey hair will remember owning cars that you were just grateful to get started. It was the sole domain of those with big pockets to enjoy the luxuries of the added extras. Now it seems most cars can provide the wow factor.

Take the new Citroen C3.

Having driven the Flair edition for a few days it’s hard to believe this is a of ‘super mini’. Keyless entry and ignition is just the start of it. It has a well thought out touch screen system with a clear sat nav, DAB radio and hands free phone controls - three things that were certainly deemed a luxury until a few years ago.

There’s a lot packed into a small body to help the driver. In reverse there’s not only parking sensors, but a camera as well. At the other end of the car there’s Citroen’s ‘Connected Cam’ a dash cam that’s tucked away behind the mirror and records what is happening on the road; very useful should you be victim to a ‘crash for cash’ cowboy (a modern trend that’s not so welcome).

The better equipped models can offer lane departure warning systems, blind spot monitors, hill assist and of course the connectivity to your smart phone that modern day life demands.

Putting the tech to one side, the car is a pretty good drive as well. A smooth ride is also a quiet one, unless you put your foot down, whereupon the 1200cc PureTech petrol engine sounds pleasantly throaty.

It looks good for a small car too. Citroen offer 36 colour combinations, not always a

good thing for a procrastinator like me. Outside it looks beefy and full of intent, helped by the intricate wheels.

The interior styling is, well, stylish, from the flashes of colour on the dash that mirror the exterior to the luggage style door handles. It’s spacious enough, with drivers over 6 feet tall still able to stretch out. The passenger behind them won’t though.

There are a few small niggles; the stop start engine system didn’t seem to want to engage for

me, and the keyless ignition took a couple of goes to master.

But these are small matters.

If you are busy doing school runs, trips to the vets and generally keeping the world spinning, this is an excellent contender. It may not offer much that isn’t offered elsewhere, but it packages it together well and at a good price.

Citroen are very proud of their motoring heritage, but the new C3 is another reminder that they are focused very much on the future.

Police start text messaging scheme to fight rural crime AVON and Somerset police have launched a new text messaging service to help prevent and detect rural crime.

Anyone with information about suspected crime in their area can send a message directly to the force’s rural crime team by dialling 81819.

The details will then be assessed and any action taken.

The system is being trialled for three months after many people involved in the police’s Farm Watch scheme said they wanted to be able to pass on information quickly to those tackling crime in the countryside.

Inspector Joanna Mines said rural crime officers wanted to hear about any suspicious or potentially criminal activity.

It could involve people being seen behaving suspiciously, potentially stolen goods or livestock being offered for sale to the public or at markets or sightings of stolen vehicles.

Inspector Mines said: “We have had real success using a text number to facilitate reporting of drink drivers in the past and we hope this will prove as effective.”

Avon and Somerset police and crime commissioner, Sue Mountstevens, said: “Rural crime affects the livelihoods of farmers, smallholders and rural businesses and presents some real challenges for the wider rural areas.”

Messages sent to the new number won’t be monitored around the clock, only when team members are on duty, so anything that requires an immediate response should be reported via the 999 system.

Frampton Athletic continuing to fight an uphill battle JANUARY saw only 3 games played by the club due to a mixture of weather, cup matches, player availability and a natural break in the fixture list.

Frampton Athletic’s first team faced a tough match both on paper and in reality as their first game after a 2 week festive break saw them go up against high flying Real Thornbury, in a 5.30pm kick off under the floodlights of Oaklands Park in Almondsbury.

Due to it being a later kick off time than normal, Frampton were missing a few keys players who were unable to make the game. It would appear that Real Thornbury had a full strength squad. The game started well for Frampton, who were passing the ball around nicely and getting the ball forward well. But having

resisted the impressive attacking play by Real Thornbury for the first 25 minutes of the game, the deadlock was finally broken and the home side took the lead.

From then on, it was a bit of non-contest. Frampton’s confidence dropped and Real Thornbury’s pace and determination increased. This resulted in an onslaught on the Frampton goal, which saw Real Thornbury double their tally before half time, albeit it they could’ve well had a few more but for the Frampton goalkeeper, Nick Talbot.

The second half saw much of the same and Frampton quickly found themselves unable to get the ball out of their half and were quickly running out of ideas. It was then that Real Thornbury put them to the sword

n SPORT as the onslaught continued. Real Thornbury racked up a further 6 goals in the second half, but Athletic veteran, Martyn Tozer, did manage a consolation goal, as he rounded the goalkeeper and provided a neat finish in a rare Athletic attack.

With the score line 8-1 at the final whistle, many commented that it could well have been more, but for the numerous saves by Talbot in the Frampton goal.

Earlier in the day, Frampton’s Reserves side recorded a rare but much needed victory over fellow strugglers, Fry’s Club A. Goals from Aiden James and Craig Rogers were enough to secure a 2-1 victory, as Athletic held on towards the end as Fry’s made a sterling effort to get themselves back on level terms. But Athletic held firm and recorded only their third league win in 11 games.

With both teams having 2 weeks off due to a mixture of opposition cup games, fixture breaks and frozen pitches, Frampton’s first team faced another tough game against another high flying opposition in Hambrook. Unfortunately,

Athletics’ first team started the game well against Hambrook and found themselves 1-0 up after 25 minutes, thanks to a goal from Anton Forbes. 10 minutes later and Anton become provider, as his fantastic cross fell to the feet of Liam Downer who finished with ease.

Frampton were playing some very good football and looked to be on top of the game, but 5 minutes before half time, they struggled to clear a free kick that was whipped in to the Athletic 18 yard box and following a bit of

a scramble, Hambrook fired the ball in to the back of the net from 4 yards.

Now with their tails up, they were pushing for an equaliser before half time and were gifted the perfect opportunity when one of their strikers was clipped inside the box and the referee awarded them a penalty. The striker picked himself up, dusted himself off…then hit the post with his spot kick Whilst Frampton started the second have with a slender 2-1 lead, it was clear that Hambrook were not willing to settle for that and increasing put Athletic under increasing pressure.

Despite numerous tackles and saves, Hambrook finally got the equaliser that they were pushing for.

The same pattern of play continued and whilst Athletic created the odd chance, it was Hambrook that looked more likely to score, as the Athletic energy levels were fast dropping.

They managed to hold out until the 80th minute, but the pressure from Hambrook was too much and they were able to get themselves in front for the

first time in the game.

Further saves kept the score line down, but with the last kick of the game and with the Athletic players running on empty, a counter attack from Hambrook saw them make it 4-2 with relative ease.

Frampton Athletic are already starting to plan for the 2017-18 season and are looking for a local U16’s/U18’s/ U21’s team to play as Frampton Athletic next season, bringing with them the manager(s). coaches, players and whomever else they wish to bring with them!

Frampton Colts come good after poor start to year JANUARY has brought some mixed results for Frampton Cotterell Rugby colts team.

Led by skipper Zak Smith, they first entertained league leaders Minehead . The game was evenly poised with Minehead leading 3-0 with ten minutes remaining but two late tries flattered the visitors. Frampton spurned kicks at goal as they went for tries, but came up short.

The following week Frampton hosted Yeovil in the Somerset cup and in a thrilling game lost out 16-12. The forwards put in a bug shift but it was not to be Frampton’s day, despite tries from Callum Wyatt and Dec Grimstead.

The final game of January saw Frampton see off a Frome colts side 51-0 , scoring nine tries from Joe Uren (2), Alex Knight (2), Jimmer Merrick, Liam Plant, Harry Blakes, Dan Harris, Lewis Oakley and Fraser Allen .

Player of the month has gone to Dan Casey who picked up two man of the match awards.

Summer must be around the corner cricket nets are starting!

IT may not mean the long summer days are almost upon us, but the start of cricket nets at least means spring can’t be too far away.

Frampton Cotterell Cricket Club’s winter nets start on the first Sunday of February lasting for ten weeks and give players of all ages and ability the opportunity for some much needed practice. As Sam Coleman from the club told the Voice; “Should you or someone you know have a habit of looking out of the window to check that it’s not raining, with a wistful look in the eye imagining cover drives and yorkers then do come along and give it a go for real”.

Senior winter nets start on

Sunday 5th February, 1-2pm and junior nets start on Sunday 19th February, 4-5pm. Both are held at Winterbourne Sports Village, all welcome.

Sam Coleman from the club said; “We’re a friendly village club with 3 senior Saturday sides playing in the Bristol & District League.”

“We also play regular midweek T20 cricket and run junior sides from Under 11's upwards.

The focus of the club is very much on enjoyment, opportunity for all and the social side of things with regular events throughout the year.”

The club is always on the lookout for new members, both

The cricket club’s adult teams have had considerable success in recent years, with a group of young players who have

come through the club’s youth set up. Both the 1st and 2nd teams enjoyed promotion last season, with the 1st team being champions and promoted to Division 1 of the Bristol and District league.

Anyone who would like to join in is welcome to come along to adult training which is held on Sundays between 5pm and 6pm, also at Yate Academy.

Sunday 5th March with a 10.30 kick off.

George Haskin's under 14's enjoyed a deserved win against Highridge as performances have shown a great improvement in recent weeks. The side will be hoping to pick up vital points in the run of home games coming up.

Saturday mornings see the U15's play in the Severn Valley

Youth League and, having lost just one league game, they have an important run of games now the cup matches have been completed.

Warren Teague is coaching the U6 and U7 year groups on Saturday mornings, 9.00 am at the WIA astro pitch.
