art/isan center third year year major project timeframe: 10 weeks the brief, concept and theory working within the apartheid legacy of forced removals, this project locates itself within district six - a landscape filled with the palimpsests of foundations of homes destroyed in 1966. the site sits between an open field unable to be developed due to complex land claims, a mosque protected by heritage western cape and regularly visited by old residents of district six, and along the backside of a technicon campus composed of brutalist buildings. the brief was to design a center dedicated to the practice of the artist and the artisan. this simple brief highlighted to me two practices, seemingly opposed to each other, and in this dialogue the in-between space could exist. looking to van eyck’s teachings of the in-between space, the art/isan center became a thres(hold) space where the six parties acting on the site could feel engage and create together.

looking to van eyck’s teachings of the in-between space, the theoretical understanding of designing through creating threshold spaces became a crucial informant into the design process. the art/isan center became a thres(hold) space where the six parties acting on the site could engage and create together. artists, artisans, district 6 residents, mosque members, students and staff, and the potential other are welcomed into the space through a directed circulation route into the building, impeding the efficiency of everyday life and pausing in the space which embraces all.

basement floor plan the gallery: the contemporary artist’s gallery has been submerged onto basement floor and appears reminiscent of the positive space of the mosque on ground floor. the top lit gallery space has two access points; the primary route is a dramatic staircase from ground floor which pulls the various community stakeholders above into the (sometimes elite) world of the arts below. adjacent to the gallery there is a sculptors studio, submerged to buffer noise.

engaging and thres(hold)ing the stakeholders on the ground floor: the programme allows for an inclusive ground floor, accessible to all participants and wholly disability friendly. care has been given to make for mixed use spaces, engaging with aldo van eyck’s theory of un-prescriptive/vague spaces, which hope to allow for a feeling of ease and comfort for its inhabitants.

a blurring of interior and exterior spaces can be seen on ground floor with a fully glazed façade directed at the courtyard openly welcoming passer-by’s at 2 secure but easily visible entrances. the central courtyard facing the mosque was drawn from datums on site and attempts to venerate the religious and historic building. the vertical circulation reaches high with two concrete triangular beacons, finished in rough off shutter concrete and juxtaposing the polished concrete of central building. these beacons become nodes, creating a civic building which pulls participants in the area together as a central place of learning. the form developed out of the datums found on the site and the sculptural nature of the space allows for an occasion out of the circulation. gentle risers and an experiential movement hope to draw people into the stair well rather than use the elevator to create dynamic circulation routes as events, before the event of entering the prescribed room of function.

bringing the occupants to their destination through place-making and occassions: the arrangement of the programme from ground floor to second floor sees a gradation on privacy scale, where access is monitored by a security booth on ground floor. allowing occupants to enter the vertical circulation to their destination on the above floors. on the first floor becomes that of the more private, with allows for an inclusive ground floor, accessible to all participants and wholly disability friendly. care has been given to make for mixed use spaces, engaging with aldo van eyck’s theory of un-prescriptive/ vague spaces, which hope to allow for a feeling of ease and comfort for its inhabitants. mosque

on first floor, three large studio spaces are bridged with a central social space, which overlooks into the below atrium and directly fronts the mosque. on second floor the privacy gradient continues with office space for the management of the building; a shared living space for three resident artists; and a caretaker’s apartment. all three separate spaces are connected through a central roof terrace which faces the mosque.

m e r c h a n t ’s h o u s e third year year minor project timeframe: 7 weeks The brief: Designing a four storey building in the bo kaap, to accommodate a merchant family. With their trade located on the ground floors and a residence unit for a family of five. Ensuring a larger economic output for the merchant family as well as designing for a flexible programme a floor for office space was located on the first storey, and two 1 bedroom duplex units were placed on the second and third storeys.

The merchant’s space required in the brief was for a cafe, the servery was developed out of a look into the culture and community amenities of the Bo kaap. To avoid gentrification and rather celebrate local cuisine, the Servery allows for an experiential dining venue with outdoor lounging and late night cooking classes.

Using the sloping site to allow for a transcending flow of circulation through the ground floor the glazed Servery cafe offers an open experience to the public, pulling towards a shared courtyard behind the building - where musicians may be welcomed.

m e r c h a n t ’s h o u s e axonometric render with site context Occupying the corner site: In order to accentuate the prominent position of the corner site and ensuring a pull of the public into the shared courtyard various techniques were used to draw passer by’s into the space.

The emphasis on bringing people into the shared courtyard is a generous attempt within the scheme to allow for increased economic activity for those other merchants who spill out onto the courtyard.

The most noticeable intervention is the overhanging top two storey’s which extend at the corner point, allowing for more space within the family unit and generously offering them a celebrated space.

The bridge which spans across the lane from the Servery Cafe to the Potter’s yard. Both interior units which access the bridge allow for office use and this shared bridge allows for outdoor space for those tenants. It similarly highlights the lane and draws people under and into the shared courtyard. The bridge supports a pivot gate which closes at night to secure the courtyard.

The chamfered edge of the ground floor, the point at which one enters the Servery Cafe is another attempt to draw into the lane and courtyard.

tana baru pilgrimage route site plan and section the story tuan said aloewie was the first official imam of the cape muslim community. guru came from indonesia to the cape in 1744 with hadjie matarim as “state prisoners” where both were incarcerated on robben island. after 11 years on robben island, matarim passed away and tuan guru was released.after his release tuan guru elected to stay on at the cape and propagateislam amongst the slaves and the free black population. at the time the only religion recognised in the cape was the reformed protestant church and to practice any other religion was punishable by death. to facilitate his ambitions, tuan guru became a policeman, giving him access to the slave lodge. tuan guru was said to be one endowed with miraculous powers and many legends revolve about his life. he was considered to be the kind of man who “works while others sleep”. the concept in order to honour the tana baru and the surrounding spiritual site, we wished to enhance the existing story through the use of the existing topography and void, and the idea of duality. the existing void is treated as the heritage object, and in order to allow people to engage with the ground plane, they have been submerged into it. contrasting that, the pathway leading up the site has been elevated in order to honour the natural hierarchical topography and create a relationship to the heavens as one ascends to the sacred pinnacle point: the Tana Baru. The concept of duality came through in recognising the two streams of Islam in South Africa that have been borne of the same history: that of the Tana Baru. It also recognises that this stream of consciousness was created by two men, giving thanks to Hadjie Matarim (whose tomb is located on Robben Island).

The scheme is ordered through four gardens: the gardens of learning, congregation, reflection and remembrance. Around these gardens, certain activity spaces are defined and accentuated. The gardens allow the community a space to be, using its resources (shade, fruit, water) and dwelling within its beauty.

tana baru pilgrimage route garden of learning the commercial building exists on a site with existing ruins of historical significance. conceptually, the building is a revealment and celebration of these ruins. the planning takes cues from the ruin’s layout and therefore celebrates it spatially. furtermore, the building is punctuated with courtyards that appear to be the negative imprint of the ruins themselves. in addition, a sensitivity to the scale of the chiappini frontage was a major design driver. in response, the building steps back volumetrically to preserve the scale of the facade. section b scale 1:200

tana baru pilgrimage route garden of congregation The path surrounding the quarry attempts to honour the history of the Quary, as mentioned on our master plan scheme panel The path appears submerged in order to create a connection to the ground, echoeing the concept of the void, and highlighting the connection to the rock face and earth below.

The path surrounding the quarry offers the community a safe place for leisure and reflection, perhaps even a running track.

The platforms are positioned to highlight views of the city as well as significant features of the rock face. While the use of gabion walls will be constructed from the removed earth on sit

tana baru pilgrimage route garden of reflection The choice to remove a commercial structure from this erf was taken out of respect for the spiritual process of ascension which we see occurring along the pilgrimage route. This Garden of Reflection now offers the opportunity to pause, echoing the concept of delayed gratification, whereby the Tana Baru appears close and even visible through the separating perforated brick wall. Therefore it becomes a threshold space for reflection before entry into the spiritual Garden of Remembrance - the Tana Baru.

The grid pattern which the garden follows stems from the Qibla axis, subtly creating directed circulation along an implied North North-East datum.

THE USE OF PUBLIC ACTIVITY NODES ALLOWS FOR THE UPLIFTMENT OF THE COMMUNITY. BY INCORPORATING A SCHEME WHICH OFFERS STALLS FOR SALE PURPOSES, THE DESIGN OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR RESIDENTS TO SELL THEIR GOODS - FOR THE COMMUNITY,

BY THE COMMUNITY. AS OPPOSED TO THE TENDENCY TO GENTRIFICATION. THE FOCUS ON COMMUNITY AND COMMUNAL EXPERIENCE GUIDED THE RESIDENTIAL DESIGN TO ACCOMMODATE FOR A SHARED LIVING SCHEME. OFFERING PRIORITY TO A FAMILY RESIDENCE, WHILE ALLOWING FOR A SECOND ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT FOR THE GRANDPARENTS OF THE MAIN RESIDENCE. THIS CHALLENGE OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE POCKETS OF PRIVACY WHILE INCORPORATING COMMUNAL AREAS SUCH AS THE PRAYER ROOM AND THE COURTYARD. THE INCORPORATION OF CIRCULAR ARCHES TO CREATE ARCADES OF PASSAGE AIMS TO GIVE AN ARCHITECTURAL PROMINENCE TO THE SITE. THE USE OF GEOMETRY AS A LINK TO ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE IS AN ATTEMPT TO DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CULTURE OF THE BO KAAP. WITHIN THE RESIDENTIAL DESIGN, A SHARED PRAYER ROOM MAINTAINS THE CIRCULAR GEOMETRY - LINKING AGAIN TO ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE AND THE PURITY IN GEOMETRIES. IN ANALYZING THE BO KAAP, LIMITED VEGETATION CAN BE FOUND. THE QUARRY DIRECTLY BEHIND THE SITE OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PULL THROUGH THE GREEN BELT FROM THE MOUNTAIN AND DIRECT IT INTO THE SITE, AS REPRESENTED BY THE TREE LINE RUNNING THROUGH THE SQUARE. THE EVIDENT JULIET BALCONIES AND VINES WITHIN THE RESIDENTIAL SCHEME ATTEMPT TO INCORPORATE GREENERY WITHIN THE EXPERIENCE. THE TERRACING OF THE PUBLIC SQUARE BECOMES REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ROOFSCAPES WHICH TERRACE ALONG THE SLOPING HILLS OF THE BO KAAP, SIMILARLY THE HALF LEVEL FLOOR RELATIONSHIP OFFERS A DYNAMIC ROOFSCAPE - ECHOING THE TERRACED ROOFS OF THE BO KAAP.

perspectives

second year minor project timeframe: 4 weeks the story the reed huis (house) is situated within the reeds parallel to the elandsbay velorenvlei (the lost lake). the brief was to design a home immersed within its environment and implementing sustainable principles. aiming to evoke the feeling of immersion within the vlei, i intentionally blurred the interior and exterior relationships of the reed huis. this was done through the development of floating glass spaces placed throughout the house. with different functions these glass passageways, rooms, seating opportunities, bathrooms and stairs create the feeling of floating through the site. These various glass rooms are an attempt to create a pause moment within the home which draws its occupants to the exterior. this feeling of immersion is heightened by the surrounding reeds which encompass the house. these reeds play an integral role in providing privacy to spaces within the home as the thicket of reeds prevents views into the house. the forms on site are derived from a neighbouring farm, uithoek farm, a historic site which houses the first homes built in elandsbay. the design sees three modules of the same size connected by these glazed spaces, seeing a connection of old and new. the precedent study of the uithoek farm houses see an enfilade plan, where the sequence of rooms leaves limited privacy. Therefore, the reed huis adapts this circulation to provide a sequential enfilade plan, where the more private programs are placed along the ends of the circulation routes. with consideration of the sublime views of the vlei, as well as the flood direction –derived from the vlei huisies – the reed house is orientated parallel to the vlei.
