HEART OF A DOG

WELCOME TO THE 2022 NEXT STAGE FESTIVAL. We may have had to adjust our plans slightly but we still have many wonderful shows for you to experience. It has been a long journey for these artists, whether experimenting with new online formats or suddenly recording a show in a venue, all of these companies have risen to the occasion and we are hoping that you, the audience, will not only support them but share their work with others. Our image this year is that of the butterfly, our theme is returning and transforming. Part of that was about coming back into a physical theatre which alas is no longer possible but I believe the imagery and idea still stands. We are returning – we have a festival still, four pieces that were curated from the very beginning with a digital space in mind and several new pieces that had to quickly pivot into creating their shows for you online. I could not be prouder of all that has been created both from our artists and the entire fringe team who have made this transformation happen. All we ask from you is to join us, be an active part of the storytelling and this chapter of Next Stage and enjoy! Happy Fringing,

Lucy Eveleigh Executive Director

December 30, 2021 Dear Next Stage Audience and Supporters, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending this year’s Next Stage Theatre Festival hosted by Toronto Fringe. It gives me great joy that this year’s festival is hosted at Daniel Spectrum in our dynamic Regent Park community here in Toronto Centre. Many of the previously planned in-person productions were filmed in this incredible venue. I know these past two years have been especially hard on our arts community. I’m thrilled to see the continued success of this festival as I know its important role in the creation of new Canadian works. The Toronto Fringe and Next Stage Theatre festival have been instrumental as part of the development of new Canadian plays including Kim’s Convenience, Da Kink in My Hair, and helped foster the talent of the co-creators of Come From Away. Not only does this festival foster Canadian stories, but it promotes and encourages residents to participate in their community at large; creates new connections with emerging artists, and contributes to our community. For the 15th year, the Next Stage Theatre Festival features a great number of productions that showcase dynamic and innovative styles and formats. Even in the face of a global pandemic, you have been adaptable, flexible, and resilient. Your platform has provided the opportunity for indie theatre-makers to continue to develop their craft and showcase their talents making up an integral piece of the cultural fabric of Toronto. Congratulations to everyone involved and I wish everyone an enjoyable and memorable event. Yours truly,

Kristyn Wong-Tam City Councillor Ward 13, Toronto Centre

Toronto Fringe would like to acknowledge that our office has been built on the traditional territory of Tkaronto, “the gathering place” - we acknowledge the original caretakers of this land, the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of Credit, Haudenosaunee, Chippewa, and Wyndat nations. To all the people of Turtle Island, Chi Miigwetch.

LAURA LAKATOSH, STAGE MANAGER Laura began her work in stage management while attending the University of Toronto. What was initially an extracurricular activity through volunteering as an ASM, to balance the rigor of academia, quickly became a passion for theatre and stage management. While she did not end up pursuing a career more related to her undergraduate degree, she fully believes that her studies at U of T as an English major, as well as minors in Diaspora + Transnational studies and other disciplines, helped to widen her appreciation for performance, storytelling, and inclusivity of many diverse identities, backgrounds, and cultures in live theatre. Since then, she has endeavored to build a career by working as a professional Stage Manager. MELANIE GRACE, ACTOR (ZINA) I’m a Taurus, pretty good at pub trivia, middle child syndrome, likes spending time in the great outdoors, biking or hiking especially with mountain views, drag shows and good times! My friends would describe me as bubbly, easy going and a laugh... all true! Ideal Date: Warm beverages, social distanced walk with your dog. See how we vibe. Oh this isn’t a dating app bio? oops! It is nice to be writing a theatre bio instead of a dating bio again! Melanie really does miss the mountains of BC, she completed the acting programs at Vancouver Film School. After three years there she moved from BC back home to Ontario. Melanie is happy to be in Toronto establishing her place in the world of creatives, and thrilled to be Zina in Heart of a Dog. The story is about a stray dog saved by a successful surgeon who runs an operation by trepanning his skull and giving him human pituitary glands. Later on, the dog gets hired by the Soviet State and starts working for them. Arguably, this timeless story – uniquely – portrays the exploitation of people in any society in which individuals are used and even abused due to particular political intentions of the government. The novel Heart of a Dog considered to be a satire of Bolshevism, was written in 1925; however, its official release is dated a few decades after, in 1987. It is interpreted by many as an allegory of the Communist Revolution in Russia. Politically speaking, the play written based on the novel can be interpreted for any capitalistic country and the totalitarian systems such as Iran, China, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Cuba, etc. Mohammad Yaghoubi has directed the Farsi adaptation of this story twice in Iran. The Farsi premiere of Heart of a Dog was in 1999. He also remounted this play in 2014, in which he had a different approach, and asked all the men in the show to wear headscarves. This was in response to the image of women that the Islamic state has disseminated in recent decades. In Iran, the state dictates Islamic sartorial codes for women to this day. Yaghoubi used this approach to criticize the compulsory hijab and censorial regulations. The narrative of this story inspired Yaghoubi to expose the similarities of the totalitarian states of two different countries of different times with contradicting ideologies wherein one communism ruled over people’s lives (Russia) and in the other religion (Iran). That project showed how ridiculously similar these countries are regarding the lack of freedom of speech and freedom of opinion. Ironically, the male actors had to uncover their hijabs because the government’s censorship office forced Yaghoubi and the company to change their critical approach.

ABOUT NOWADAYS THEATRE COMPANY: NOWADAYS THEATRE is a Toronto-based not-for-profit company founded by Aida Keykhaii and Mohammad Yaghoubi in 2016. It is a highly acclaimed theatre company with over a decade of background in Iran with its Farsi name, “In-Rooz-Ha”, which means “Nowadays”. In the interest of inspiring cross-cultural dialogue and supporting cultural diversity in Canada, NOWADAYS THEATRE translates Canadian plays into Farsi and Iranian plays into English. Our works have been performed in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Kurdistan, Russia, Sweden, The Czech Republic, Turkey, and the USA. NOWADAYS THEATRE was the 2018-19 RBC Emerging Company in Residence at Canadian stage, where, they presented The Only Possible Way written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi at Upstairs Theatre. In 2018, Swim Team, presented by NOWADAYS THEATRE, and directed by Aida Keykhaii was premiered at the SummerWorks Lab, and it was in NOW’s annual list of “the best of the Fest” for Outstanding Production, Outstanding ensembles, Outstanding Direction, and Outstanding design. Swim Team was also mentioned in the list of Canadian Stage Award for Direction as “Honourable Mentions”. The last in-person theatre project before the pandemic, presented by NOWADAYS THEATRE with the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts, was the celebrated Iranian play Winter of 88 written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi at the 2020 Next Stage Theatre Festival, Toronto. The production received amazing reviews, including 5Ns review from NOW Magazine. In May 2021, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, NOWADAYS THEATRE presented the online English premier of the Iranian recognized play From the Basement to the Roof directed by Aida Keykhaii. Our recent project was an immersive 360-degree video-theatre project of the celebrated Iranian play Dance of Torn Papers written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi streamed at the Toronto Fringe Festival 2021.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT The Nowadays Theatre Company was founded by first-generation Iranian immigrants in 2016. We have always been interested in creating cross-cultural dialogue and supporting cultural diversity in Canada because we know the importance of preserving what makes us unique, our cultures. Even though we are a long way from our country of origin, our new home accepts and lets us create without making us change. This is why we actively do not support colonial forces that undermine, distort or erase the vital role of Indigenous people in our world. Land acknowledgments are a stepping stone to honouring broken treaty relationships, and we embrace the theatrical practice of making this small but significant gesture. “We acknowledge that we are gathered on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis people.” We are grateful to have the opportunity to create and perform on this land. THANK YOUS: to Lucy Eveleigh, Laura Paduch, Suzanne Wilkie, Caitlin Farley, Damien Nelson, Carly Chamberlain, Yuddha Maharaj, and all the Next Stage Fringe Festival staff for their generous and tireless efforts. NOWADAYS THEATRE company is extremely grateful to the Toronto Arts Council for its generous support. SPONSORS
