We want to make your Fringing experience as easy as possible, so if you can’t make a show, we will offer you a refund or an exchange to another day, so please stay home if you are feeling unwell. Or you can always offer your ticket as a gift to the artist because 100% of the ticket revenue goes directly back to them. Where possible we will allow latecomers into our venues to be more accommodating, without being disruptive to performers and audience.

This year we also received funding from The Toronto Arts Foundation via The Hal Jackman Foundation and The Slaight Family Foundation, which has allowed us to offer community tickets to all the artists of the festival, as well as volunteers, donors, and sponsors. If you are someone who wants to come to the Fringe but finds the cost a barrier, please reach out and we will use one of our community tickets to ensure you get to experience a show at the Toronto Fringe.

We also look forward to welcoming you back to POSTSCRIPT. This year we are going back to the Tranzac Club (that some of you remember from many years ago), to host our POSTSCRIPT Patio, as well as debuting our POSTSCRIPT Lounge at our new venues at Daniels Spectrum. Both spaces will have a full bar and delicious food for you to enjoy.

I’m very happy to welcome you to University-Rosedale for the 2022 Toronto Fringe Festival.

It is my pleasure to extend greetings and a warm welcome to the artists and audiences of the 2022 Toronto Fringe Festival.

This summer marks the 34th Toronto Fringe Festival, but this one feels especially meaningful. For the first time since 2019, Fringe theatres will be full and the patio will be lively. After everything that we’ve been through, this celebration of community is more than important than ever.

The Fringe Festival is dedicated to providing an inclusive platform for all artists, established and emerging, and ensuring that Torontonians can experience the rich theatre culture within our city. Since 1989, the Fringe Festival has connected thousands of artists with community members and empowered creative expression within all in attendance.

This year, the 2022 Fringe Festival presents more than 80 productions at over 10 venues throughout the city. I am excited to welcome back audiences to what is sure to be an engaging and enriching experience.

I am so grateful to all of the organizers and volunteers for their exceptional dedication to ensuring another successful festival, and for working so hard to allow us to be together again. And I especially want to thank the remarkable artists and performers for their incredible contributions to our theatre community, both here in Toronto and across the country.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, and in partnership with the wonderful staff and volunteers at the Toronto Fringe, welcome to the 2022 instalment of the festival.

Like many other organizations stepping into 2020, we had bold plans to kick off the new decade—that year of Fringe was hailed “Theatre with 20/20 Vision!” And while many organizations say the pandemic forced them to ‘pivot,’ for us at the Toronto Fringe we say it ‘invited us learn.’ Among other things, it invited us to learn how to build an online festival thereby reaching audiences outside of Toronto.

Humbly, the pandemic also allowed us to appreciate just how important the festival is to the arts ecology of Toronto and to the world. During the pandemic, where all sorts of organizations had to close their doors, we had moments where we’d ask ourselves ‘what would theatre and the greater community be without the Fringe?’ This is a festival that provides talent with access to stages and audiences, and has played a role in spawning successful careers and shows that have gone on to achieve commercial success.

Given this, during the pandemic you’ll take comfort in knowing that we—both Board and staff—were clear that the Fringe wasn’t going anywhere!

And we’re still here because of you and your ongoing support! As Fringe is a registered charitable organization with 100% of the ticket sales going to the artists and creators, we ask that you consider being extra generous with your donations this year. Tip the Fringe, donate online, or become a sponsor! We’re back, and with your support we’re able to be back in full force.

Like many of you, the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF) has been through a lot since 2020, but also, like many of you we are returning stronger and more focused than ever before. We have offered more support to our member festivals over the last two years and we are ready to return to in-person festivals, as well as digital offerings.

CAFF has over 30 Fringe Festivals spanning Canada and the USA. We exist as an organization to unite, support, empower, and strengthen our member festivals in order to cultivate and foster independent artistic exploration for artists and audiences across North America.

CAFF members return 100% of the ticket price back to the artists, and all festival companies are selected either by lottery or on a first come/first served basis.

We know that many of you have missed being together in community and we are so looking forward to our festivals being able to offer that space again, to our artists and audiences alike. Some artists have been waiting since 2020 to perform and we are grateful we are finally able to give them that chance.

Please come and support them in your home town and beyond if you can. Share the love of the shows you see with friends and family, and support your local Fringe festival, because we now all know that the world is definitely a darker place without them.

Thank you to all the artists who have shown great tenacity in this difficult time, and to all the festival producers and teams who have hung in there to ensure their Fringe is still a platform for those artists. The Toronto Fringe Festival takes place July 6 to July 17, 2022, taking over 11 venues across the city, plus our POSTSCRIPT Patio at the Tranzac Club and POSTSCRIPT Lounge at Daniels Spectrum. Since 1989, the whole festival has been unjuried, meaning the shows have been chosen by lottery rather than a curator, opening the stage to all who have a story to share.

Staff and volunteers are happy to answer your questions at either of our Festival Box Office Booths, or at each venue.

GETTING AROUND

COVID – COMING BACK SAFELY

All our venues are accessible via TTC, bicycle, car, and on foot. Check the map on page 18 to plan your day.

Some helpful tips on timing:

The safety of staff, volunteers, artists, and patrons is a priority. Toronto Fringe Festival abides by the City of Toronto’s current public health regulations. Toronto Fringe requires masks to be worn indoors by patrons, staff and volunteers. and for everyone to self-screen for symptoms prior to coming to the Festival. We encourage all patrons to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

In the East End, walking between Daniels Spectrum and Crow’s Theatre takes approximately 22 minutes, and bicycling takes approximately 8 minutes.

In the West End, walking between POSTSCRIPT Patio and the Festival Box Office at The Tranzac Club and Tarragon takes approximately 15 minutes, and bicycling takes approximately 5 minutes. Each other venue will take roughly the same or less time to travel to.

All venues and POSTSCRIPT locations will offer contactless payment and ticket scanning, as well as hand sanitization stations. Patrons are encouraged to maintain a physical distance where possible.

GET GREEN The Toronto Fringe is committed to doing our part to conserve our planet. We do not use plastic water bottles at our venues and encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottle or purchase a POSTSCRIPT branded one from any venue.

At POSTSCRIPT we use eco-friendly cups that are compostable and cans that are recyclable. We partner with Cascades who offer recycling and food waste containers.

This year we have halved our program printing and are encouraging folks to only take one to keep with you for the Festival. The artists are also coming up with innovative ways to sell their shows without printing thousands of paper flyers. We welcome any feedback to help us make more eco-friendly choices.

PATRON SERVICES In addition to tickets, passes, and TO Fringe merch, our Festival Box Office Booth is where you can find First Aid, Lost & Found (at Tranzac Club location), sensory kits (at Tranzac Club location) and items to borrow, and all information about the festival. Locate a booth using the festival map on page 14.

Planning for the 2022 Festival began in Fall 2021, and staff, volunteers, and festival participants have been required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please do not attend if you have a fever or are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of attending, or if you have had close contact with anyone suspected or confirmed of having COVID-19.

Fringe assumes no liability for any actual or perceived transmission of COVID-19 in attending or participating in the Festival.

The Fringe returns 100% of the ticket price to the artists. To help support box office operation costs, the Fringe applies a $2 service fee to each ticket.

THE FINE PRINT All passes are transferable. The 10-Show Pass, 20-Show Pass and 30-Show Pass may be used for up to two tickets per performance. Passes can be purchased online, by phone or at the Festival Box Office (not at individual venues). Your pass can be used to book a ticket at-the-door. Each ticket booked in advance on a pass will incur a $2 advance booking fee. There are no refunds for any unused portion of a pass. Pick up your Fringe Flash Pass card at a Festival Box Office booth that you can scan at the venues to redeem or check in with.

REMINDERS Admission to show: Bring your e-ticket (either on a smart device or printed at home) to the venue to be admitted to the theatre, or your Fringe Flash Pass card. No printer? No worries – the name the ticket was booked under will be on a digital guest list at the venue.

All shows start on time: Set your clocks to Eastern Daylight Time.

There may be no late call: Shows may not offer latecomer admission, so be sure to check the show webpage ahead of time and aim to be 15 minutes early. Toronto aka always plan for traffic.

Better safe than sorry: If you feel unwell at all, please contact our Patron Services team before the performance begins to exchange or refund your ticket at no extra cost. Do not come to the festival if you have any symptoms.

Tickets exchanged for a different production will incur a $2 exchange fee.

VISUAL VENUE GUIDES These online guides can help you get acquainted with a venue before you visit. Guides are available on our website for most main venues. They include directions to the venue and information on what you can expect when you get there.

PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKERS Where a support worker is required to accompany patrons with disabilities, admission to all Fringe performances and events is free for the accompanying person. Every attending patron and accompanying support person must have a valid ticket to that performance or event. Please advise the box office when you purchase your tickets.

SERVICE ANIMALS Service animals are welcome in all areas of our venues that are open to the public. Please advise the box office when you purchase your tickets.

PRIORITY SEATING Patrons with access needs are requested to identify themselves at the venue box office at least 25 minutes prior to performance start times. Priority seating cannot be guaranteed after general admission begins.

ASSISTED PERFORMANCES Many Fringe shows are providing additional access measures at select performances. Shows that have optedin will have an icon beside their listing in this program.

For detailed information about the type of accessible performance please refer to our Assisted Performances Supplement or our website. You can search by Assisted Performance type online in our show listings. Last minute changes do happen so make sure to check our website for up-to-date information throughout the festival: fringetoronto.com/access.

RELAXED PERFORMANCES Relaxed performances have a relaxed attitude to noise and movement, including reducing extreme sound and lighting effects, leaving house lights on at a low level, and allowing patrons to come and go.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES We will provide ASL and/or Deaf interpretation for public events at the POSTSCRIPT Patio and some shows will offer interpretation at one or more of their performances.

AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES Some performances offering Audio Description may require an earphone and receiver that can be obtained from the venue box office. Please advise the box office when you purchase your tickets to reserve an earphone.

Please identify yourself at least 25 minutes prior to performance start times to make use of these services.

TACTILE BODY IMMERSION PERFORMANCES Some companies may integrate an ImmersX Tactile Body Immersion device into their performance. There is only one seat available per performance, please advise the box office when you purchase your tickets to reserve it. Please identify yourself when you arrive at the venue so you can be shown to the chair.

PATRON SERVICES All points of service at the Fringe are equipped with magnifying tools as well as pen and paper. The Festival Box Office Booth at the Tranzac Club also has sensory kit items available to borrow. Staff and volunteers receive training on serving patrons with disabilities, however, we are always striving to do better. We encourage you to send us feedback, positive or negative, by contacting our Patron Services Manager at patron.manager@fringetoronto.com.

Lost Dreams Collective Oliver, a university student, begins squatting in an abandoned home to reduce costs and save his relationship.

But when the house is revealed to have a sinister past, and someone goes missing, his life spirals desperately out of control. This surreal thriller, and dark ensemble comedy, was developed in the 2020 Beats+Intentions Playwright's Unit (Expect Theatre/PGC).

Centre for Indigenous Theatre This story of David Mcleod, is based on true events: a young Indigenous man with Down Syndrome, who is mistaken for a Japanese soldier during WWII. The story explores the consequences of xenophobia on our collective past while reflecting on its endemic reverberations in the present.

A PLATFORM TO EXPERIMENT

NEW YOUNG REVIEWERS, SUPPORTED BY THE JON KAPLAN LEGACY FUND

We directly support genre and convention defying work, and independent artists who continue to be at the frontier of theatre art.

The New Young Reviewers Program is a workshop series and writing group for emerging theatre and performance reviewers Canada-wide, ages 15 and up. This program focuses on introducing participants to the basics of theatre reviewing and and developing responses to Toronto Fringe performances. It also encourages participants to explore new, creative approaches to criticism that are emerging in the field, and to begin to define themselves as critics and reviewers.

TEEN FRINGE, SUPPORTED BY NEVILLE AUSTIN Teen Fringe is a youth arts initiative for teens aged 12–17, inviting young artists to train with leading professionals in acting, singing, dancing, and writing. This program is a partnership with the Toronto Fringe and Edge of the Sky. After 5 days of in-person training in theatre, music, and dance, participants will display their learnings at a final performance at the POSTSCRIPT Patio on Saturday, July 16.

TENT PROGRAM, SUPPORTED BY RBC EMERGING ARTISTS TENT (Theatre Entrepreneurs’ Network and Training) was created in 2014 by Toronto Fringe to address a growing need in theatre training: how to actually make theatre happen. TENT invests in the future of arts and culture in Toronto by creating, training, and cultivating community.

We equip emerging artists with the skills and human connections to empower them to create meaningful art from informed perspectives, and on their own terms.

My First Fringe is a theatre production, and creation workshop series for young theatre-makers ages 15-18. In this program, participants take part in a series of workshops led by established artists, geared towards equipping them with the skills needed to successfully create, and produce independent theatre. This 1-2 week program is run annually in the spring. The 2022 edition was supported by Gideon Arthurs and Erin Shields.

The Adams Prize, funded by the Pat and Tony Freedom Fund for the Arts, is an annual award given to a new musical in development that includes a production bursary, and performance slot in the Fringe Festival. The New Play prize, supported by the Aubrey and Marla Dan Foundation, is an annual award recognizing a full-length play, also given a bursary, and performance slot in the Festival.

Toronto Fringe is a proud participating organization in the Ontario Arts Council’s Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators program, which enables us to direct critical development support to independent artists.

After learning from and being inspired by the digital work of artists during the last few years, we are committed to fostering exploration, experimentation, and audience development – because being Fringe means supporting the cutting edge.

We also run a 24 hour play writing contest and will be spending time in the fall to determine how and when we want to run this program.

WE ARE A PART OF A BIGGER PICTURE WE ARE PROUD TO BE A PART OF: Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts: This arts service organization is a champion of theatre, dance and opera in the City of Toronto, and it aims for a unified voice to improve the environment for all performing arts companies.

Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals: This association includes over 30 Fringe Festivals from across Canada and continental USA. Its mission is to unite, support, empower and strengthen member festivals.

In 2023 the CAFF Touring Lottery will return, which offers artists the opportunity to tour to multiple festivals consecutively in one season.

This year we are pleased to pilot the Fringe ON Tour with our neighbours, Ottawa Fringe Festival and Hamilton Fringe Festival, supporting an indie company and highlighting the network of festivals right here in Ontario.

NEXT STAGE THEATRE FESTIVAL The Next Stage Theatre Festival is the curated, boutique festival produced annually by the Toronto Fringe. The 2023 Next Stage Theatre Festival will be a hybrid of both digital and in-person events, with in-person events taking place at the Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park. The festival will take place October 18-29, 2023
