WELCOME TO THE FRINGE! A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the 29th annual Toronto Fringe Festival! We are Ontario’s largest theatre festival, welcoming 160 companies and over 1,200 artists from all around the world. This year our Fringe Club migrates south on Bathurst to the Scadding Court Community Centre. Located on the south-east corner of Bathurst and Dundas, in the heart of Fringe Festival country, this outdoor urban playground features daily activities, food vendors, concerts and more. See page 11 for all the Fringe Club details. This is also the inaugural year of our Teen Fringe program with our partners at Scadding Court Community Centre and Edge of Sky Productions. Teen Fringe is a performance intensive that welcomes teens from across the GTA to train with leading professionals in acting, singing and dancing. Don’t miss the big performance when the teens take to the stage as part of the closing night show of True North Mix Tape. We have re-branded our popular FringeKids Festival to Fringe KidsFest. This festival within a festival is at the George Ignatieff Theatre and is for our youngest Fringers to enjoy theatre, workshops, bouncy castles and creative play stations all in one location. Kelly Straughan On behalf of the Fringe family, thank you for joining us. Executive Director

GETTING AROUND WALKING AND CYCLING Let’s go green! The Fringe Festival venues are all situated in a westend Toronto corridor that spans along Bathurst Street, stretches east over to the University of Toronto, and includes venues a little farther west to Queen and Dovercourt (the Theatre Centre). Many venues are within walking distance from each other, and all are within a 20-minute bike ride. BIKESHARE Bike Share Toronto is our Official Transportation Partner. You will find Bike Share stations close to almost all of our venues – just check out the mini-maps on each venue page in this program. Or visit Bike Share’s website to learn more at bikesharetoronto.com/how-it-works RICKSHAWS Look out for our Fringe-branded FREE rickshaws running along Bathurst Street and Bloor Street during the two weekends of the festival. Hail one down and catch a free ride to your next venue!

PUBLIC TRANSIT Ride the rocket! The best way to get into the heart of the Fringe zone is to take TTC. To start your day, we recommend taking the Bathurst or Dundas Streetcars to the Fringe Club at Scadding Court. Hop out at the intersection of Dundas Street West and Bathurst Street. (The Fringe Club is just 1 minute south of that corner on the east side of Bathurst Street.) Then you’re right in the middle of all the action, and only a brief walk to many of our venues. QUEEN STREETCAR Please note that the Queen Streetcar is out of commission during the entire 2017 Fringe Festival. There will be shuttle busses running, but you may experience longer than usual wait times. Why not walk or bike instead? CAR If you’re arriving by car, take a look at the mini-maps on each venue page for the closest parking lot. Many neighbourhoods also have easy and accessible street parking that you can now pay for via the Toronto Parking App.

MAPS Our main venue map is on page 6 and our Fringe Club map is on page 7. On each venue page in this program, we have also provided a mini-map that details the venue’s location, as well as closest TTC stop, closest Bike Share station, and closest parking lot. Happy navigating!

SPECIAL BIKE SHARE OFFER!

As a special offer to Fringe-goers, Bike Share Toronto is offering 12 days of unlimited biking for only $15. That’s the price of their usual 3-day pass!

LETTERS On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am delighted to extend warm greetings to everyone taking part in the Toronto Fringe Festival.

It is my pleasure to extend greetings and a warm welcome to everyone affending the 2017 Toronto Fringe Festival hosted by Toronto Fringe.

Well known for its large and loyal following and its vibrant and diverse program of events, the Toronto Fringe Festival does much to enhance our province’s reputation as a centre of cultural excellence and innovation.

I am delighted that wonderful events like these are taking place in Toronto. They are an integral part of our city’s success and are essential for a prosperous, vital and livable Toronto.

I commend the festival for the important role it plays in supporting the development of emerging and established artists — including those whose voices are under-represented in theatre — and in engaging festival-goers through a lively and accessible experience.

On behalf of Toronto City Council, please accept my best wishes for a memorable event and continued success.

I want to thank all those who have been instrumental in making this year’s festival a success, including the artists, generous sponsors, volunteers, and of course the many enthusiastic supporters. I offer my sincere best wishes for what I am sure will be another successful and enjoyable festival.

KATHLEEN WYNNE Premier of Ontario

JOHN TORY Mayor of Toronto I am honoured to welcome you to this year’s Toronto Fringe Festival!

On behalf of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF), welcome to the adventure that is Fringe.

Since 1989, this annual event has been an important part of Toronto’s arts and culture landscape, and has become a mainstay of our summer festival season. This is the first year that the Fringe Club will be based at Scadding Court Community Centre and I am thrilled to welcome them to our Ward 20 community. I know that this will be the beginning of a long and successful relationship with our neighbourhood. For years I have enjoyed many Toronto Fringe productions and I look forward to seeing the new and innovative shows being mounted this year. Happy Fringe Festival!

JOE CRESSY Councillor · Ward 20, Trinity-Spadina

CAFF is comprised of 33 member festivals across North America with a mission to foster independent artistic exploration for artists and audiences alike. This past November CAFF played host to the World Fringe Congress, which gave us a chance to show off our ‘Made in Canada’ model of Fringing. Over 53 international festivals participated and festival organizers marveled at CAFF’s accessible and inclusive model that returns 100% of the ticket price back to artists (minus taxes and fees). This year the Edinburgh Fringe celebrates its 70th anniversary and the global Fringe family celebrates with you! Thank you for supporting the wild and wonderful movement that is Fringe. I hope you have a wonderful festival.

KELLY STRAUGHAN CAFF President

IN MEMORIAM JON KAPLAN 1947–2017 Jon Kaplan was Now Magazine’s Senior Theatre Writer, working for the magazine since its very first issue over 35 years ago. Jon was also one of the Fringe’s greatest supporters. Jon has been attending the Toronto Fringe Festival since its first summer in 1989, and has helped launch the careers of hundreds of indie artists. He was a true champion of the festival, attending and reviewing as many productions as possible in his thoughtful and caring way. His compassion extended to the Fringe staff - he was known to bring in fresh fruit during his office visits, reminding us to eat healthy and try to get some rest. He was one of a kind and there is a void in our hearts. In honour of his legacy, we are naming a tent in the Fringe Club the Jon Kaplan Tent. This will be a relaxing space nestled within the hubbub of the festival where you can rejuvenate after a long day of Fringing, connect with friends (both old and new) and discuss theatre – in true Jon Kaplan fashion. Jon - thank you. We already miss you. - FROM EVERYONE AT THE TORONTO FRINGE
