This workshop has the primary goal of reviewing the nature, history, and struggles of “American democracy,” with the overarching aim of giving to give you the information and insights you need to develop ways of teaching your students about our democratic system, and in particular about the ways in which they will, in time, be able to contribute to it–mostly by voting, but also through paying attention to and perhaps even becoming involved in campaigns and elections. A secondary goal is to become more able to situate the upcoming elections of 2014 into America’s democratic history, so as to better be able to make the political contests of the coming school year more relevant to students.
