Join us for supervised play for Lower School students before school begins. Meet in the Common Room. With all of the exciting activities we offer, you are sure to find one that will thrill your child. Students may participate in as little as one day per week, or as many as five. Extended Day for Kindergarten–Grade 1 Extended Day is a free-play program which includes a nutritious snack, quiet games, books and arts and crafts. Homework Help for Grades 2–4 Homework Help is a place to complete homework with extra support. Students are guided in organizing work, prioritizing assignments and developing techniques to answer their own questions. Please see registration page at end of booklet for trimester rates and drop-in rates. Note that some activities have additional fees listed with the class descriptions.

Language classes will begin the week of September 15, 2014.

Mandarin on Mondays Children will experience China through “real language” classes in Mandarin. Taught by native speaking educators from Be Lingual, the noted language program, students will be introduced to age appropriate themes through authentic vocabulary and learn to speak in simple sentences. They will be engaged through authentic stories, play Chinese games and learn traditional songs. They will also be introduced to Chinese culture and work on related arts and crafts projects. Students will learn in an instructive, supportive environment. They will participate in a large variety of activities which will allow for differentiated instruction and multiple learning styles. We will hold a party with Chinese food or go on a culturally related field trip at the end of the session. Enroll now for this exciting opportunity! Journey into French on Tuesdays Experience “real French” as you are introduced to age appropriate themes through authentic vocabulary & sentences. Engage in a fun-filled program that will allow you to increase your knowledge and build your confidence in French. Discover French through songs, stories, dance, games and arts & crafts. Learn authentic vocabulary and simple French sentences. Find out about typical French foods (think crepes!), cooking or tasting when possible. Learn about ordering in a restaurant. Learn in instructive and exciting ways in a supportive and nurturing environment. Participate in a large variety of activities which will allow for differentiated instruction and multiple learning styles. Come join the fun and start building a strong foundation in French. Comic Book Creations Nicole parcher, Visting Artist Calling all comic book lovers! Make your own comic book, using your imagination to create heroes and villains with untold super powers. Comic book artists will also make a poster, card game, mini movie strip and a T-shirt—all featuring their own character designs. Open to 2nd-4th graders. INSTRUCTOR

Cooking Up a story INSTRUCTORS Ashley and Nyesha Roll up those sleeves, fasten those aprons, but wait...we can't forget to read! Children will be able to explore the world of cooking through a single story. This FAT phenomenon brings stories to life; transforming them into tasty, sweet, and yummy eats. Join Nyesha and Ashley for some cooking with a literary twist!

CATs Tennis

Be part of this innovative program that allows us to offer tennis instruction right here at Friends! Perfected by veteran tennis professionals and child education specialists, CATS lessons and exercises are carefully tailored to support children's physical and motor skill development. Children will learn how to swing, volley and use proper footwork. With a focus on fair play and positive attitude, students will play real games each week. Limited enrollment. Open to K–3rd graders. karma kids DANCe!

We like to move it, move it! This class will allow young movers and shakers to express themselves on the dance floor. Dancers will learn longer choreographed sequences and will experiment with improvisation and partnering. Focus will be on confidence building, expanding our dance vocabulary and having fun! In each class we will work together to co-create our dance performance for the recital. Open to 3rd and 4th graders. WORKSHOP FEE $300

Basketball stars of NY

Basketball Stars are back at Friends to provide you with the best basketball instruction from the top coaches in the city! Join our after school program and learn how to play the game the right way while participating in weekly games. The program is carefully constructed to teach you the right way to shoot, defend, rebound and much more. Coaches from Basketball Stars include former Division 1 College players. Don’t miss out on the chance to be the next Basketball Star of NY! Open to 2nd to 4th graders. WORKSHOP FEE $275

rocking Lego robotics with Tekintellect Students learn to design and construct original, mechanized models from Lego® components. They receive instruction regarding the scientific principles embedded in the models, and then proceed quickly to a fun, hands-on, multi-sensory experience, in which they construct the models and play with them. Carousels, cranes, dune buggies, conveyer belts, windmills and more will come to life in your child’s hands, through their own effort and ingenuity! Fourth Graders can jump start their homework every day of the week. This program will provide students with the help and structure they need to complete their assignments.


Get ready—the entire animal kingdom is crawling, slithering, hopping and flying into Friends! With themes such as Rocking Reptiles, Neighborhood Nature, and Incredible Invertebrates, the Nature Company workshops give students a chance to get up close and personal with a new touch-friendly animal each week. Art Adventures with Nora Nora Chavooshian, Artist + Designer Start with a mess and end up with art! In this combination workshop of 2D and 3D projects, you will learn how to build creations such as toys, sculptures, and lifelike models, as well as paint and draw with opaque and transparent mediums. By using multiple materials, you'll discover that there are way more than three dimensions to our creativity!

ride the roof kevin Banahan, sidewalk surfer Skate Club returns, and whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, there’s room for you to rip it up on the roof at Friends. For beginners, we will cover the basics of skateboarding such as balance, pushing off and kick-turns—no prior experience necessary. For the more advanced, we will have a new array of ramps and rails. On bad weather days, we will train indoors using Vew-Do balance boards to develop strength and refine technique as well as watch instructional videos featuring the pros talking skills and demonstrating favorite tricks. Skateboard and helmet required.

Corbin’s Crusaders sports Club One of NYC’s premier sports programs is coming to Friends. Corbin’s will pick up at dismissal time and bring the children to Randall’s Island, Chelsea Piers or a Gym on rainy days and then take the children directly home following their class. Classes will be led by top-notch coaches with international tournament playing and coaching experience with the goal of bringing the fundamentals and enjoyment of every game to each child in the program. This trimester we are offering Boys Lacrosse (Full equipment required: helmet, gloves, stick, shoulder and arm pads), and Coed Soccer. Open to K-4. Children will be grouped by age and ability. Blading Matt schlee, hockey Fanatic One of the safest sports around and a proven workout, FATsters have the opportunity to join the blading craze by learning the moves from an "inline" pro! Basic skating instruction will include striding, turning, stopping, crossovers and much more. Blades, helmets, and pads required.

Dazzling Discoveries hands-on science

Launch a rocket, erupt a volcano, create a science circus, dig for dinosaur bones, make and reveal invisible ink, design and test cars and flying objects—discover the physical world through these and other exciting projects with Dazzling Discoveries’ handson science program. Through kid-friendly experiments and projects, students explore magnetism, chemical reactions, air pressure, outer space, animal habitats, the human body, flight and other wondrous real-life topics. Each week, children create takehome projects that incorporate the science theme of the class. WORKSHOP AND MATERIAL FEE $375

Woodworking INSTRUCTOR Madeleine stern, Vice president Let’s measure, saw, hammer and drill! Possible projects include: treasure boxes, toys, doll furniture, sculptures, birdhouses, puzzles, etc, etc. Students can follow their passions with technical support from Madeleine. BsNY Xtreme Football

Kick off the school year with a spirited drive toward the end zone! Whether our field is the Outer Courtyard or the Playroof, “touch-tackle” rules will ensure safety and excitement while we run, block, and pass for yards. This is an allweather class so we’ll sweat it out on hot afternoons, dodging falling Sycamore leaves, and tear through cold November puddles. Fun is only a first down day away! Open to 2nd-4th graders. WORKSHOP FEE: $300

Child's play NY: Acting the Myth

Ever wonder what the snakes on Medusa’s head talk about? Ever seen an infomercial for Arachne’s loom? Do you know what you would do if you came face-to-face with a Minotaur? Well…wonder no more! In this dynamic improv class, classical mythology is our springboard for dramatic play. Kids learn about classical mythology while playing theater games. They invent their own myths and characters based on the heroes, gods, quests that they learn about during the semester. The final show is a presentation of hilarious and dynamic scenes from the Greek myth cannon. Open to 2nd-4th graders. WORKSHOP FEE: $175

Ceramics Nicole parcher, Visting Artist Pinch, roll, carve, model—explore and push the limits of clay’s structural properties. We will create animals, landscapes, and abstract constructions as well as cups, plates and bowls. All students will take home fired and glazed work. Open to 1st–4th graders.

Basketball Stars are back at Friends to provide you with the best basketball instruction from the top coaches in the city! Join our after school program and learn how to play the game the right way while participating in weekly games. All the yoga fun with a focus on our favorite themes for each class! Every week, we’ll have a different theme—Circus Yoga, Partner Yoga, Butterfly Yoga, Group Yoga, American Doll Yoga, Yoga Games and more! All of our favorite parts of yoga will culminate in an amazing show that we’ll collectively prepare for grownups at the end of the trimester. This is the ultimate yoga experience! Come, Play, Yoga!

Ashley's Cooking Academy Chef Ashley Trade in those thinking caps and put on your chef hat! Through Ashley's entertaining curriculum students will learn the fundamentals of cooking, and baking. The program will feature math, science, culture, kitchen etiquette, safety, and tasting all in one! This interdisciplinary and hands-on cooking class is fun, delicious, and nutritious! After successful completion, students will be rewarded with a certificate of completion, and there very own personal cookbook. Open to 3rd and 4th graders.

Clay World Jorge Cruz, Character sculptor Using special modeling clay, instructors from Miami Beach’s Clay World will help students create figurines of animals, people, monsters and more! Tie Dye Factory Nora Chavooshian, Artist + Designer Working with textiles, we’ll tie-dye, block print, paint and decorate with appliqué to create unique fabrics. We’ll design t-shirts, hats, and even turn our fabric creations into whimsical stuffed toys.

With enough participation, part singing will be introduced, along with popular songs and special youth-oriented choral arrangements. Dodgeball kevin Banahan, Average Joe Finally, a sports game for the masses! Whether you like to charge the line with a CC Sabathia throwing arm or prefer to hide and wait with the sneakiness of a chess master, dodgeball offers fun and excitement to every style of player. We will mix it up by alternating between the three sets of rules—Army, Jailhouse and Elimination. Open to 2nd–4th graders.

On guard! Develop speed, total body coordination, mental focus and strategy in the unique sport of fencing. All classes will include warm-ups and games; fencing drills that develop footwork, sword technique and tactical thinking as well as actual fencing bouts. And you might even pick up a few Shakespearean quips! Rental of mask, glove, jacket, and foil included. Open to 2nd–4th graders. INSTRUCTION AND EQUIPMENT FEE $420

Chess Club peter Barkman, Chess Master Open to players of all levels. Beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of the game, basic strategy and tactics. More advanced students will learn and study correct opening strategy, middle game planning and basic end game theory. Children will also learn how to read and write chess notation.

Art Around the World NICOLE PARCHER, VISITING ARTIST Children will explore the crafts of different cultures and create a different project every week! Projects include Mexican Yarn Painting, Navajo Sand Painting, Eskimo Laughing Masks, Twirling Palm Puppet from India, Vietnamese Dragon Puppet, Central American Worry Dolls, Chippewa Dreamcatchers, Japanese Wind Socks, Kente Paper Weaving and more! Child's play NY: Mini Musical: snow Queen Come build your ice palace as we explore the Hans Christian Anderson classic. We’ll sing songs and play with the story and characters from “The Snow Queen” that are appropriate for young voices. We’ll hide from the goblins, go on races with reindeer, and save the kingdom from an everlasting winter! Theater games and artwork surrounding support the children’s understanding of how to create a character. Additional music from the new Snow Queen musical will be incorporated. A live accompanist will join us for all our classes, underscoring our adventures and playing along as we develop our original material and work on the children's favorites. Open to K-2nd graders. Drop-ins

Registration form and payment are due August 29, 2014. Any registration received after will be processed only if space remains, and a late registration fee will be assessed.

Instead of a note, parents are now required to submit a drop-in form on the morning of the drop-in day. Drop-in forms are available in all Lower School classrooms and in the Lower School Office. Please call the FAT office to check on availability.

Registrations will not be processed unless accompanied by payment in full. Please make all checks payable to Friends Seminary, and send to the attention of FAT, not to the Business Office. Phone registrations will not be accepted. Tuition aid is available. A maximum of 75% financial aid is available to those who receive aid for the academic year. Please call for details. Children may drop or change a class within the first two weeks of the trimester. If space is available, children may add classes at any time but classes will not be pro-rated. After September 19, 2014, refunds or credits will not be given for changes to enrollment status.
