Inside this Issue: Membership Drive Kickoff

From Your President, Rob Lively

inston Churchill once said: “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” We all give to causes that are important to us and a question I always ask is, “Is the organization a good steward of my donation/membership? Does it do what it says it is going to do?” In that vein I hope you will read the article below that talks about how FOWL was named the 2018 Lake Association of the Year by the Maine Lakes Society. It is an award we all can take pride in, for we all played a part in it through our donations and membership. We are especially appreciative of your support of FOWL and I trust you will renew your membership with the enclosed membership/donation envelope. I expect many of us have known people who seem to “do it all” in an organization: they have a clear sense of the mission; they have unbounded energy when it comes to achieving goals; they are a storehouse of institutional history; and they offer sage advice when it comes to addressing questions and issues. For FOWL, that person is Sandy Muller. As you will see in the enclosed article, she is the bedrock of our organization, embodying all of the above traits, plus more. And I am glad the article places her FOWL story in the larger context of a very meaningful life. I mean, really, how many of us can claim to have worked with Dr. Michael DeBakey of heart transplant fame, provided private nursing care for the Duke of Windsor, and perhaps most unusually, was physically carried by the actor John Wayne! You need to read her story. Thank you, Sandy! FOWL has a long history of collaboration with the University of Maine at Farmington. Professor Dan Buckley (Biology; now retired) served as our scientific advisor for a number of years. Now we are pleased to work with Professors Julia Daly (Geology), Rachel Hovel (Biology), and Jesse Minor (Geography) as they continue research on Wilson Lake and its watershed. As an example of that collaboration, in this issue are the results of a Wilson Stream assessment conducted by Professor Minor’s Physical Geography class, Fall Semester 2018. We were impressed with the students’ enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills. I would like to highlight some important, upcoming events. Please let us know if you would like additional information: April 26: 19th Annual Maine Milfoil Summit; Lewiston/Auburn USM Campus; http://www.mainelakes.org June 22: 49th Annual Conference of the Maine Lakes Society; University of Maine at Farmington; https://mainelakessociety.org July 21: FOWL Annual Meeting; Kineowatha Park, Wilton
